Phillies have clearly cemented themselves as the best team in the National League now there’s a ways to go I understand they’ve only played 92 of 162 games uh by my math and it’s not normally correct would that mean they have 70 games left to play let me actually check that because 90 plus 72 hey nailed it look at that Nothing Gets By Me sharp as a nail uh but obviously there’s a lot more time to go when you see the Phillies last night take down the Dodgers take a serious Victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers the first game was commanding 101 last night a little bit tighter 4-3 and we’re going to get into that game and how that happened and what was so impressive in that game last night in just a second but like you just get the feeling that this Philadelphia Phillies team will not be stopped it’s wild to have these thought processes because ultimately the thing that’s going to start creeping into our head the longer this goes for the Philadelphia Phillies is okay I love what they’re doing this regular season it still comes down to October it still comes down to finishing the job it’s still such a crapshoot but you give yourself a better chance every single time you win because you’re closer to HomeField Advantage we know how big of an advantage Citizens Bank Park is we’re going to talk about that in the final segment of today’s episode but my goodness like if there’s any doubt who the best team in the National League and the best team in baseball is that one’s a little bit more debatable because the Yankees are a very good team the Guardians I I don’t know what’s going on in Cleveland but they’re pretty good the Baltimore Orioles have their own claim to being a very very good baseball team but in the National League the discussion after this series is over starts and ends with the Philadelphia Phillies at least as far as the regular season is concerned I mean just look at the standings after last night’s Victory the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League hold a five and a half game lead over the Dodgers a six-game lead in The Lost column they have a chance to go for the sweep tonight I know you’re saying okay it’s a home series they don’t have mookie bets well you didn’t have Bryce Harper last night who was back in the lineup tonight so that’s a good thing for the Philadelphia Phillies neither of these teams are at the full strength they hope to become postseason but I think the playing fields are rather even and the Philadelphia Phillies have shown that they’re just they’re a juggernaut team that won’t stop winning whether they play teams below 500 like everyone was saying to start the year or they play the second best team in the National League so I fir ly believe that there should be no more debate the Philadelphia Phillies are the best team in the National League scream it from the rooftops No Reservations on saying that they have shown the Dodgers in this series so far yo you come into our house we’re better than you and we go on the road and we may be better than you too we’ll find that out later in the season when these two teams meet up in LA but let’s talk about last night and how we got here because we recapped the 101 victory in yesterday’s show last night a much tighter one that 43 victory that I already told you there are a couple things that were really great to see from the Philadelphia Phillies perspective being that it was a lower scoring game what do you say we talk about the pitching first Christopher Sanchez got rocked last time out and he comes out in this game and gives you six Innings of five hit ball two earned runs one walk five strikeouts it wasn’t the cleanest six Innings there were definitely some points in there where you felt a little nervous it wasn’t like oh he’s just mowing guys down but against a Dodgers lineup that has been good enough to be the second best team in the National League for basically the entire season so far going six Innings two earned getting the win is an incredibly respectable effort and it reminds you hey these guys are goingon to have bad outings but they’re still incredible pitchers on any given day that goes for Sanchez wheeler Nola Suarez you could feel good about those four guys every time out even if they have performance that feel like a misstep and that’s how we should be feeling about Ranger Suarez too who’s had a couple of those games in recent memory but Christopher Sanchez wonderful work by him it’s a shame he’s not going to be on the All-Star team because he fully deserves it a 296 ER after his efforts last night but it didn’t end with Christopher Sanchez you had three more Innings you had to work through in a tight ball game a Ryan kirking comes in he gives up two hits and onethird of an inning pitched strikes out one okay gets his job done Matt Strom comes in twoth thirds of an inning pitch and a huge strike out of sh Otani it might have been the loudest moment at SZ Bank Park because that was a spot where the game felt in Jeopardy you needed to keep everything where it was Matt strom’s been your best reliever this year yes Jeff Hoffman’s been very good Matt Strom has been better and he’s pitched in big spots for this team over the past year or so and he did it again now I hesitate to build up the momentum more than what it is it was a July baseball game with again 70 games still to play in the season as of this moment that I’m recording this podcast but still to to have that moment against an MVP candidate a guy who feels like an otherworldly superstar in Otani there are plenty of pitches in baseball you see it when guys face Bryce Harper there’s almost a magnet in the center of the strike zone because you’re so just intimidated by the quality of hitter that you have at the plate not Matt strm he almost knocked otani’s helmet off with how much he made him swing through the final pitch of that at bat it’s a beautiful thing to see from Matt strm if you’ve got him in big game postseason situations you should have a lot of faith that stm’s going to be very good and we had some people questioning if strum was struggling a little bit lately and he was but listen the quality a pitcher at this point in the season has been proven we have enough of a sample size to know that who we think these guys are is who they are following him you had Jose Alvarado come in an Innings worth of work two hits allowed one earned run Jose Alvarado’s been shaky lately again do we know Jose Alvarado is good absolutely we’ve got enough to say that I know he’s got a 389 ra right now I know that’s not typical of where you’d expect him last year he’s one of the best Lefty relievers in all the baseball I’m not looking at his performance lately and saying hm we might have a Jose Alvarado problem I’m saying okay he’s struggling right now if you get me in a postseason game and you give Jose Alvarado the eighth or the ninth inning I’m still taking him over a lot of pitchers in baseball out of bullpens and the bullpens only going to get stronger with Acquisitions or probably more likely one acquisition at the trade deadline so that’s fine I’m not losing any sleep over Jose Alvarado there are no problems there right now as far as I’m concerned he’s just going to have to work through some stuff you cross your fingers and hope that he will you know the team’s going to win in spite of it and then Jeff Hoffman with just a huge shutdown save in the ninth inning a one-run game the Dodgers knowing they don’t want to lose this series to you fighting for their lives to find a way to extend this series so that they could play today for a chance to win the series themselves Jeff Hoffman just goes 12 pitches one strikeout shut down ninth inning and yeah there was a ball hit pretty well the right field it’s okay didn’t go out was ending up in the glove of Nick castios and that’s how the game ended SO pitching great hitting there’s a little bit less to discuss here but the biggest thing that I saw was the first at bat of the game right from Jump Street Kyle schwarber left the yard and to get a lead off shore bomb like that again it his second game back his first home run since coming back from the injured list I know it’s not like he missed two months and we’ve been in this drought where we’re wandering through the desert looking for the Oasis of Le off shore bombs no I mean he hasn’t been out for that long but still it changes everything to see him set the tone to see what him and Harper due to a lineup when they’re both in it like they were in game one of the series that was a great thing to see Trey Turner two for four again he’s patting 345 that guy’s not human he’s unbelievable Alec bow one for four Bryson stot two for four we talked about yesterday did that home run in game one potentially bring him to a place where he might start breaking out I said I thought he needed the All-Star break break maybe he didn’t he’s been really good this series Nick gastos one for three Brandon Marsh one for three with a run scored edmundo Sosa won for three with marfield one for three with a run score listen the more guys that are good players that you add back to this lineup the more just kind of takes the pressure off everybody the more guys that haven’t been playing well can start to play better again that might sound crazy right how does Kyle make Whit marfield better because Whit marfield just has to be Whit marfield now this year he hasn’t really been capable of that so maybe that’s not the best player to use it as an example but you get what I mean when you add the great players the Lesser players have to do less they’re more comfortable in their roles you become a better team overall and that’s what we’ve known about the Phillies this whole year is when they’re at their worst they’re probably better than you when they’re at their best they’re definitely better than you and that’s why I feel very comfortable in saying after the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 win and Series win over the Dodgers that they are some Ed as the best team in the National League and nothing I see this regular season talent wise injuries maybe talent-wise nothing I see this regular season is going to change that for me so we’re going to discuss the next step it’s not just a series Victory folks no you don’t just go home Angeles Dodgers I mean I started off the first episode discussing a preview of this series by saying if you win one of three that’s acceptable considering you don’t have Harper you don’t have schwarber and then we found out mid episode Harper and schwarber are coming back and then you beat them 10 to one in game one with those guys back and toe and Harper and shorer didn’t even do that much and then you get into a situation where well Harper’s out game two it’s been a heck of a series because there’s been a lot of injury questions and everything I’ll update you on that a little bit in this segment Bryce Harper back in the lineup tonight but it’s crazy how quickly a couple players can shift the dynamic of the whole series we went from accepting a series loss to almost expecting a series sweep tonight with Aaron Nola on the mound let’s go through that lineup first and let’s give you that injury update on Bryce Harper so Kyle schwarber’s leading off dhing he’s totally fine he is back like he never left Trey Turner batting second batting 345 playing short stop I can’t say enough good things about Trey Turner right now remember earlier in the year when I said like ahead of the Season Trey Turner could be an MVP candidate player he is the best player on this team potentially yeah 345 batting average would definitely do that uh Bryce Harper batting third playing first hitting 299 20 bombs great player the reason that he was out was that line drive that he took off of his hand I believe off the bat of Freddy Freeman um you had a situation where his hand bruised up it probably adrenaline wise didn’t affect him during the game when it happened uh the first game of this series on Tuesday night and then probably started bothering him a little bit later in the game they got him out and they said it was just a score Rob said Well turns out there’s a little bit more going on it was just a day of rest and they got away with it they won 4-3 so he’s totally fine nothing to worry about with Bryce Harper Alec bowm batting cleanup playing Third Base swinging in the Home Run Derby we’re gonna have an episode later this week about the Home Run Derby once we get closer to that that’s going to happen on Monday night so maybe we’ll talk about that tomorrow’s episode or a special Saturday episode we’ll see Bryson stop bats fifth plays second Nick gastados bats sixth plays right Brandon Marsh in left field batting seventh Brandon Marsh has been really solid in this series you’ll love to see what he’s done so far Yan roas batting eth playing center field Garrett stubs catching batting ninth and they’re going to be facing Landon Knack so Landon Knack in his career has th 34 and two3 innings pitched at the major league level he’s a young pitcher so I’d be willing to wager I haven’t even looked at this but I’d be willing to wager that nobody on the FI Philadelphia Phillies lineup or in the lineup has ever faced Landon Knack and that is absolutely correct now he’s a right-handed pitcher we know the Phillies face righties well handle those guys very very competently he’s got a 286 C so okay solid so far this year for the Dodgers has really good defense behind him it’s easier to pitch on a better team where you’re getting leads when you go out there when I look at Landon knack’s numbers though so far this year there are a couple things that stand out that I think the philadelph Phillies can take advantage of first of all you’re looking at seven home runs given up in 34 and 2/3 Innings pitched the win was blowing out of s Bank Park last night kind of wild that the final score was 4-3 but you got solid pitching out of Sanchez and that does make a good amount of a difference when you have a good ground ball pitcher for the home team but you can get Landon Knack and hit him out of the yard uh nine walks in 34 and two3 innings pitch isn’t too crazy the 098 whip is what’s really interesting here right 286 ra okay that can be misleading depending on how many Runners you could be working out of danger there and actually be a little bit close with a small sample size like 34 Innings to getting into more trouble but the low whip well that has to do with 31 strikeouts and 34 and twoth thirs innings pitched he does have Punch Out abilities so you got to watch for that but Aeron Nola does too he struck out 107 and 113 and two thirs innings pitch 10 and four record and you’d like to see Nola maybe lower that 3480 ra it’s crazy we’re asking that against the Dodgers Nola also 16 home runs we know the long ball has always been kind of a sticking point for Aon Nola we’ll see he does also have 10 wins on the year and we know any given day he can just give you seven shutout Innings like it’s Clockwork so the Phillies on the money line tonight minus 155 favorites bigger favorites than they were yesterday a 57.2% chance to win according to the ESPN analytics matchup predictor go for the sweep why the heck not I’ve already told you the Phillies are cementing themselves in my mind as the best team in the National League and nothing’s changing that for the regular season short of injuries but why don’t you go get the sweep anyway job ain’t done folks and wouldn’t you love to head into the All-Star break with this and then the series against the Athletics that you can handle it’s a good time to be a talked about as much this year now the Philadelphia Phillies have a great home record they’ve been unbelievable at Citizens Bank Park this year how good have the Philadelphia Phillies been at home they’re 35 and4 by my math that’s 21 games above 500 just at Citizens Bank Park now not that they haven’t been good on the road 25 and 18 there but home cooking has been really good Christopher Sanchez who threw last night his home record has been incredible he loves pitching at Citizens Bank Park which is kind of crazy considering Citizens Bank Park is not a pitcher friendly ballpark I guess it is when you keep the ball on the ground and Christopher Sanchez is so good at that but this team you’ve heard it from free agents coming here you’ve heard it from guys that Phillies have traded for you’ve heard it from guys that have been here for a while but have just started the past two years to experience what a playoff atmosphere in Philadelphia is like everybody Raves about cens Bank Park and everyone who comes in here as an opponent can’t wait to get the heck out of the building and over the course of the regular season they’re sleepy games I don’t know you’ll probably see someone you play the Athletics the next couple games before the All-Star break final series before the All-Star break it’s Oakland you just got through going against the Dodgers it might feel like a bit of a Just A Lull in the schedule from a like levity standpoint or levity I don’t think that’s the right word you understand what I mean it’s going to feel like less of a playoff atmosphere but that’s what Rob Thompson was talking about after the game last night he said that ciens Bank Park in the first two games of the series has felt like a playoff atmosphere and says it’s why his players love to play here he credited the fans he talks about how special it is to play in an environment like that and frankly this team is not as good at home without the fan base buying it and I want to give you all credit out there because I some sometimes come after the Philadelphia Phillies fan base not in a bad way in a loving way but saying yo you guys got to let last year go we gotta move on from the whole H the playoff disappointments of the past I can’t believe in this team I fought tooth and nailed you guys basically from the off season to where we are today and this isn’t like a Connor was right moment even though I was but this is just a I’m proud of the Philadelphia Phillies fan base moment this team was good in 2022 but they hadn’t been there yet the fan base jumped on board quickly the second day one game one of that Cardinal Series in comeback fashion then they go on the Magical World Series run the city falls in love with this team you knew if you could keep these players together you’re going to have a lot of sellouts at Citizens Bank Park but in 2023 you start slow again and there’s questions about this team always starting slow do they have it they had a chance to beat the Astros are they going to make it back can they repeat the magic run and then they kind of do they get to within one game of the World Series we know how 2023 ended but this fan base was back in on the team and supportive of the team and we got our hearts ripped out in that Diamondback series and as much as I try and tell you like day in and day out almost do not let last year worry you about this year’s team as much as it’s the same players they’ve shown you that they have a different mentality this year they’re on a different level it may not work out I’m not guaranteeing a World Series I’d be an idiot to guarantee something of that magnitude that’s so difficult to achieve but I believe that they have what they need to be major players in October if you I say all of this to say this is the real compliment to the fan base as much as I try and tell you you should let last year go it’s tough man when you have a loss like that in a big spot there are a lot of people who were down on this team and while the Phillies have earned your respect and your support and your belief by going out and demolishing teams from Jump Street in the 2024 season credit to Philly fans for allowing themselves to believe allowing themselves to set up to potentially get H again or potentially something great to happen to continue to have this playoff environment after this team got trashed and rightfully so for how cold they went at the plate in the NLCS last year I understand that maybe the playoffs this year it’ll be a different type of feel there might be some nerves in that building because that’s when everything is Do or Die win or go home and it may make you think more about last year but this fan base is unbelievable they are the best in baseball you listening right now watching right now you are part of that you are an unb unable part of the Philadelphia Philly success and you’re something that the Dodgers don’t have you’re something that the Braves don’t have you’re something that the Orioles don’t have you’re something that the Yankees don’t have they’ll say they have it they’ll say they’re close they say they’re great fan bases guess what I’ll take you raving lunatics over every single one of the other franchises fan bases in Major League Baseball and I use lunatics as a term of endearment I love how nuts Citizens Bank Park gets it’s a beautiful beautiful thing Rob Thompson loves it the players love it and man just keep it up please because I never want Citizens Bank Park to be a comfortable place to play and I do believe that last night was exactly what Rob Thompson called it a playoff atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park well hey folks got a little bit of time to get revved up to do it again because there’s one more game
