The Winnipeg Jets Have Set Their Price For Rutger McGroarty, And Are Happy To Wait To Get It

the Winnipeg Jets have apparently rebuffed a few offers from the Montreal Canadians for Rucker mcord what was asked for what did the Jets say no to find out on tonight’s episode of lockon Winnipeg platforms and YouTube doing so of course is always free of charge and ensur you never miss another episode most of all though we just love and appreciate your support especially during these wonderful offseason days now we’re kicking off tonight’s episode with an interesting report out of the uh uh I think out of Slovakia um this coming from a a newspaper I I don’t even want to begin to pronounce it uh I think it’s hocky k or something like that or or hocky I don’t know how to pronounce it apologies for anyone who is Slovakian I probably just butchered that um but there has been a report about uh some news from overseas about what the Jets may have been I guess receiving offers for Rucker mcity when it comes to the buff uh the the Montreal Canadians right the Habs are one of those teams where of the the squads that you might imagine having the Futures and and stuff to perhaps make a play for Rucker they technically are counted among that group but let’s be real right when it comes to deliverables in assets and roster players Montreal has typically been a little bit further back of the pack all that said they still made a fairly competitive offer and the Jets apparently turned down a package that involved um Philip msar um a draft pick from probably the Panthers in 2025 a first rounder and maybe Justin Baron or Jordan Harris uh which is kind of the usual Prospect pick and you know a player but let’s be real right nothing to really write home about the best asset in that whole deal is probably a first rounder we’ll get into what this could mean for what the Jets are Still Holding Out for and how long it might take for them to actually get their ask in just a little bit before we go any further though just wanted to let you know that tonight’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and be sure to use promo code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms do apply now coming back to uh the the report out of Slovakia um obviously the biggest thing here is that the Jets are still holding firm to their original ask and I think that’s probably uh something that’s worth noting since you know Winnipeg has been relatively patient and I think we haven’t heard a lot from the Jets other than them trying to kind of set the narrative on this whole majority situation and if Winnipeg is essentially still asking for the the usual Trio for like a highly rated player or or Prospect well uh I I could see some teams being willing to meet it I guess my concern is that you know the the re the reason the Jets probably said no to this is that you know unless they got the Calgary pick which would be a likely a lottery sort of pick um from next season and definitely was not being sent to Winnipeg for that matter the Jets probably don’t see a lot of value out of this deal you get some spare parts and depth uh options in terms of roster talent and Futures and an okay back of the first round pick which is just sort of it’s all right um but I think Winnipeg wants something a little bit tastier and if they’re still holding out you probably won’t see anything until either late this summer or maybe even getting closer to the trade deadline which for the Jets probably makes it a little bit uncomfortable I think the longer that this sits you know there there does start to be a little bit of nerves in terms of making sure that Rucker does not go back to Michigan for his final season if he does uh before the Jets can trade his rights he can just walk into free agency and then teams might not be willing to Pony up so for Winnipeg I think that there is some imperative to not necessarily turn down every deal like this but I think Winnipeg is definitely using Montreal as leverage which is really funny because Montreal has tried time and time again to get players out of Winnipeg and time and time again their offers have fallen relatively short this is probably one of the fairest value deals that we’ve seen Montreal offer for something the Jets have usually when you hear their fans talk about like Pier l deis or something it was someon salting offer compared to whatever uh the kings were giving the Jets when that trade broke so um this one I would say is is a little more On Target but I think in terms of the actual value of the trade package it’s mod uh but at some point if that becomes the the best that you can really do I don’t necessarily hate that being the return uh but I think you can do better and I think the Jets are going to play the waiting game they don’t really have as much of an incentive to try and force it to happen right this very second uh just a relatively tighter timeline right we talked about it in previous episodes they need to probably resolve this before uh the start of the season I think the longer you get into the actual season all the way to the trade deadline I think that starts to make things a little bit dier so um if Winnipeg could get something that’s maybe closer to not necessarily a top 10 first rounder because that’s just not happening but if they get like a top half maybe like a a 14th or 15th overall sort of pick uh in that range based on you know perhaps this this season standings um maybe like a b Prospect and like a b player I I could be talked into it I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad return um it does kind of seem like they’re hinting that they’re not really exploring bringing mcity back into the lineup which I I kind of thought might be the case I feel like the damage has been done at this point and the Jets probably don’t have a huge appetite to try and rebuild Bridges unless mcity himself really initiates that and I’m going to guess that as asan and his family and perhaps mcord himself they probably aren’t really thinking about that in that respect so uh I guess we’re still heading towards a trade seems like that’s the messaging and based on the trade package I mean it’s about what You’ expect right so Winnipeg I think when they were talking about some of those uh breaking news pieces about updates on the mity situation that was how out of Mike McIntyre and Marat Tesh my feeling at the time was that it was more you know the Jets just not getting their ask out of teams than it was the fact that uh squads were really spooked by his whole demand for you know power play time um a top six or or top nine roster spot I think team sort of expect that out of him I mean it wasn’t really a shocker that he was asking to play I think it’s more the Jets having a price that most teams just feel uncomfortable with right now but at some point they may change their tune we’ll have to see uh I think it’s interesting that Winnipeg is probably pushing this a little bit out there where where where it actually came from is a little bit of a uh an ifier Source we haven’t really seen this particular article or newspaper really talk about the Jets before but um usually if some something like this comes out it’s because Winnipeg is looking for some some sources and some streams to leak information to and to try and force uh something to happen their way so maybe that’s the case here maybe it really just was some discussions around missar maybe that’s how it all came out but either way you know I think we’re getting a sense of what the Jets are still asking for and I think the biggest take away is that winipeg is going to be patient and doesn’t want to force things if it doesn’t have to which so long as that they they do do this before it starts to get to the end of recer mcity season at Michigan I think they still have a decent chance of getting an all right return but if you start really getting to that moment then you get a little bit nervous so um again I I think it’s not like an urgent matter to have it done tomorrow but but definitely the sooner you can get it done towards the end of the summer I think the better off life will be as we head into the start of the new season speaking of the start of the new season uh a while back we did some season previews for most of the skaters up front I thought I’d take some time to also talk about the Defenders because we do have some guys who are kind of fighting for some really top Awards and one of them probably deserves more of a norish shout than he usually gets you know who I’m talking about it’s Josh morresy but but might the Jets have some other contenders for that trophy we’ll talk about that in just a little bit uh before we go too much further though I did want to shout out our friends and locked on podcast Network your team every day every Dar thank you so much for rejoining us on tonight’s episode as we’re just uh we’re talking about you know next season and what’s kind of coming up for Winnipeg obviously we were just chatting about mcroy and that seems to have had a slight development in so far as we’ have now gotten a better sense of what the Jets are asking for in a trade and maybe we even know who they’ve rejected already but with the Jets roster as it is right now there are still some things to kind of walk through and I wanted to spend some time talking about uh what I’m expecting out of this year’s defensive core right because we’re going to have a new defensive system under Dean chenowith um and and obviously I you know we haven’t you know I haven’t sat there and watched Jin withth before other than uh through his time um with Toronto and and Carolina so uh there’s some interesting stuff to consider there but I think with uh you know the Jets defense we are going to have a number of top performers uh that are sort of the usual guys and then a couple of names that I’m interested in on sort of the back end that we haven’t really given a ton of consideration to yet but before we dive into that just wanted to uh talk to you FOX Sports or ESPN Watchers if you find yourselves having to turn down the volume because there’s too much shouting you should make the switch to lock on sports today a free 247 sports streaming Channel programmed for you daily to bring you the biggest stories without all the screaming lock on sports today brings you C Miss analysis opinions and news streaming 247 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app all part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day now like I said obviously I alluded to well I didn’t really allude to um I did actually talk about the Jets bringing in you know um some some some new systems of course but I think for the Jets we’re going to have some top performers that we already are aware of right especially for the back end uh coaching aside you know obviously Jenna withth I think is going to bring some interesting experience uh I think you know his time with Toronto and with Carolina has probably brought some really good structure but the Jets already already have a couple of top performers and one of them is going to be Josh morsey I mentioned that he was honestly somebody who’s uh probably a little bit overdue for um some Norris consideration I mean he had it last year and the previous season but I really feel like last year especially his game took another step forward because the year pre prior when he had even more Norris recognition look he did light the lamp a ton he was huge offensive producer but he also cheated for offense a little bit and that sort of left some actual defensive gaps uh where you’d probably notice it more just in sort of the dzone Cycles than on Rush chances because like when it comes to rush chances Morris he tends to be really really good the guy handles uh odd man rushes especially well which I always find fascinating but last year he was just a complete allaround top end Defender uh the fact that he has really evolved into to this is really special and it’s wonderful to see if there’s anyone who honestly just deserves to be happy and have the success it’s got to be morsy the man has been through some difficult times over the years and uh it’s just nice to see him really excited really loving playing again and I think it’s really good for um him to get that Norris consideration because I think at some point he really does deserve a chance to win that title now he does have a pretty tough field I’m I’m sure this season a healthy Fox is going to be in the running uh you’ll probably have Ma at some point if he’s healthy again uh you’ve got the usual standbys Yosi and in similar company like that so I don’t know if he’ll ever win a Norris outright but I think the season could be a really fun one for him all the same under arneal I expect him to be a really big uh contributor and I’m curious to know if the Jets Power Play Under Davis Payne is going to see any adjustments that tries to use uh Mory maybe in a different spot because as like a power play quarterback he’s sort of struggled there but as a power play shooter maybe along the half walls he actually has had some success so I’m curious to know if they experiment with that but for morsy I think we all sort of know what to expect with him he’s going to have another top season I think he’ll probably hit uh between you know 55 and 65 points maybe more if we’re really fortunate and blessed like he’s done the past couple of years I don’t really care so much if he’s like scoring like a billion points I just want him to have that really strong two-way game that allows him to be such a versatile threat at all zones of the ice his partner Dello I think is where you’re going to see a bit of a drop off the season I noticed it last year um and even in the prior season there there have been some flags that uh Dylan is slowing down so his contract term I think was a little bit um a little bit problematic in the longer Run for the Jets obviously the cat Pit’s not really that big of a deal but I think the term uh carries Dylan through probably the latter stage of his latter stages of his career I think he’s starting to do that Nate Schmid thing where you can see the foot speed decline um and you can see his his on Ice numbers taking a bit of a hit that said I mean he’s still one of our best safety Valves and if you’re looking for somebody who uh if you demote him to like the second or third pairing especially later in his career he’s still going to give you some really strong results while also giving you some really good stuff right now there just aren’t many better options for the Jets to bring in and you know in internally the Jets definitely don’t have a Dello ready to step up right now salamonson may eventually be the guy that I’ve sort of tabbed as his future successor but salamonson is not ready for the first pairing this season uh I love him he’s very mature I think he’s ready for some form of of North American Pro Duty whether it’s on the third pairing in Winnipeg or with the Moose top pairing but you know certainly not with morsy not just yet um so Dello I think is going to play a really big role but I think he’ll probably have more like second pairing underlying numbers this year which is fine right I think we all sort of know that he is getting older and all the you know all that said he’s still very good for what the Jets have asked of him and he’s been uh such an anchor and an on I leader for this team for many years I do expect that to continue now uh for this first part the last name I’m going to wrap up with is Neil pan because he probably brings one of the hardest reads uh Neil for some reason uh had a really bright year in the bubble when the Jets were only facing Canadian teams I’ll leave you to determine why that is but since then it’s been a a steady decline and should Pon stick around at some point I think Winnipeg is going to have to realize they need to shelter him more uh I like his personality personality and I think he’s a really fun uh leader to have but in terms of the Oni stuff you’ve heard me talk about it before it’s it’s really uh yeah wow uh it’s just bad I’ll be honest it’s it’s taken a a turn for the worst the past couple of Seasons probably back to his New York Rangers days and I I think part of it is that as pan is aging you notice his ability to Pivot and turn around and quickly adapt and and move laterally and stuff to opposing threats has really uh taken a hit right he was never the kind of player who was necessarily anticipating uh reads at a top top top Elite level but he used to be able to physically keep up and and you know make some really solid defensive body plays and stuff before but these days he’s really lost the step and as he’s tried to compensate by rushing plays a little bit more frequently I think that’s just hurt him a lot uh there are moments where he’ll Rush a read and he gets himself into like more trouble than he actually uh would have been if he just was a little more patient other times he just doesn’t see the threat either on the back door or when he’s sort of uh moving around the face off circles and that also gets him into some trouble and like I don’t want him to cover every single inch of the you know the goalmouth area that’s not really possible but there are a lot of moments where pan just hasn’t been able to shut down either those cross slot passes uh some of the shooting angles and stuff and so it’s just tough right I think this year he probably needs to get third pairing minutes and I suspect that’s not going to be the case now what I am hoping for is that chenowith is able to maybe at least balance the pairs out a a little more uh there’s not many players that pan has gener Al done well with I think hin actually had a very small sample size of having relatively break even on a shot differentials with Pon uh obviously I don’t know that that’s really much to like go off of right now but if you’re trying to find a way to sort of minimize the damage and maybe find a pairing that gives Pan um maybe a little bit less uh pressure and allows him to have a various sort of Puck carrier with him who’s going to do most of the heavy lifting hinala might actually be that kind of guy uh villy I know a lot of people sort of look at and they’re like oh he’s small and undersized and stuff and that may be true but he’s also one of our best pure Puck carrying blue liners so um I don’t want to go too much into hola yet because I want to talk about him a little bit later in the episode obviously he’s sort of for part two so I’ll leave that assessment there but for pan I think the biggest thing is should he play this year a lot of it’s going to be sort of damage mitigation I I hate to put it that way but I think that’s uh the the reality of where his game is at this stage but um like I said we’ve got a few other Defenders to chat through and we’ll talk about those guys and what I’m hoping for them for this year in just a quick moment but like I said before we go too much further wanted to shout out our friends from the start of the episode at game time obviously when it comes to buying tickets a lot of us have been through the ringer uh you get hit with surprise fees random charges and sometimes when you’re buying a ticket right lowest price guaranteed hey friends and welcome back to tonight’s episode of Locked on Winnipeg Jets part of the locked on podcast Network your team at every day EV thank you so much for rejoining us on tonight’s episode as we are just uh wrapping up uh a little bit with some thoughts ahead of Winnipeg’s upcoming season we’ve done season previews for many of the skaters uh earlier this offseason but thanks to all the Rucker mcity stuff and constant uh updates on the youth and and development camps and stuff uh didn’t get a chance to finish it out so I’m wanting to spend some time just doing the Defenders we talked about our our three big ones and now I want to talk about uh some of the names that are perhaps a little bit more under the radar the first big one I think is going to be Dylan Samberg not that people haven’t really been paying attention to him but I think people maybe underestimate just how good he’s been recently he has kind of become our best overall um defensiv minded player right in terms of shutdown impact he really is uh coming into his own as a top four and perhaps even top pairing sort of impact on the dside I would say he’s kind of at like that dlaa level right now and you see him not being a slouch when it comes to carrying the puck obviously the offensive side of his game is not necessarily something that he’s going to be known for but he’s not bad at it either right he can still move the puck he can still offer some transition support it’s just not the main thing that he does but you know otherwise he has been uh very very solid at it but again the big thing that he does he’s got that Big Frame he’s a strong skater he’s a very powerful Defender um and he’s probably the reason why Winnipeg Most Likely let uh Brendan Dylan go is because he’s more than likely ready to inherit that role I can tell you it’s not going to be Logan Stanley if uh some folks were open for that but Dylan Samberg I think is Winnipeg’s future number three or number two D and you know as he continues to mature in this role and really embrace it I think we’re just going to see him continue to be a really really good player and I think this year for him he’ll get some recognition for being a shutdown guy whether it’s on the PK or at 55 I think he’s going to be a very big performer and I’m expecting a big season out of him uh on the third pairing uh this is where we’re starting to get into that Billy hinol territory and hinol I think is finally going to get his roster spot it’s taken him a lot longer than I think he expected uh last year should have been it should have been the season that he was finally able to crack fulltime but you know instead his knee broken or his ankle broken that was kind of the end of that but this year assuming that his Mobility is you know still strong and he’s ready to uh really come out of preseason with a bit of a fire under his bum I think he’s going to be a great great third pairing option that might even be good enough to help the Jets have essentially a second pairing uh the biggest thing that hola does is he moves the puck really efficiently and I know everyone always says you need bigger stronger Defenders and that can help at times if those guys are capable of exiting the zone and making transition plays also just completing passes unfortunately the Jets usually don’t do do that with respect to their bigger Defenders they don’t find players who are capable of that as often Dylan could do some of it pretty well but otherwise right like that’s not their biggest part of their game hinala though is the guy who’s going to be that sort of player he’s going to move the puck quickly he actually wants to defend as minimally as possible uh which is kind of an interesting concept avoidance right you you keep the puck moving up the ice you make those smart plays those breakout passes you make the Zone exits and transitions you want to keep out of your own end it’s sort of uh defending by uh advancing the puck further up the ice Allah Nikolai eers so in that respect I think hola offers that skill and he might also get some power play time if he gets on the second power play unit I think he’ll show why I continue to think that he would be our best power play quarterback um he’s not going to get PP one time because you’ve got Josh morsy and morsy is basically unable there personally I would still make the switch I love Josh but I think we all know that his play at the point is it’s a little less uh a little less efficient than I’d probably prefer but like if that’s my biggest complaint about his game I’m happy to have that complaint uh he’s just so dang good at everything else that you really can’t be that upset so all that said hola should offer a nice wrinkle for power play too and at even strength I’m expecting a really nice season from him overall rounding it out you’ve got Colin Miller uh Colin I think I’m expecting to have a really solid number six role I think he’s the natural Schmidt replacement he likes to slap the puck a lot uh it’ll be interesting to see if his underlying numbers improve because when he was with the Jets he definitely hit the puck a lot but in terms of like actual deep performance and impact uh it didn’t necessarily show in The Limited games that he’ played but stylistically and just you know watching him carry the puck and stuff it was clear that compared to some of our other third pairing options he’s probably going to be fine and I think he’s been promised a bigger role this year I think he expects to start pretty consistently and I would be pretty happy about that especially on that right side where we don’t have a lot of Puck moving ability and quite frankly stability so um expecting a really solid season from him don’t think he’s going to score loads but I think he’ll be a nice you know tertiary contributor and maybe if he gets on the power play or something maybe he can still do some of that quarterbacking we’ll see I think they’re going to try a few different options but if there is one thing that is true it is that he loves hitting them from the blue line so uh I think aird unit this year will be solid Stanley will probably rotate in for at least a few games here and there but generally speaking I think those big six are going to be the core that they lean on let me know what you think about that and what you think you’re going to see out of this Jets Blue Line next season are you excited about chin West’s new systems do you think it’s not really going to make a difference drop your thoughts below or at my social medias Hol living Loco and lore Winnipeg Jets for tonight’s episode though that’s going to be all the time that we have I thank you so much for listening and making locked on Jets your first listen of the day every day we’ll see you back here tomorrow with with even more Jets coverage so stay tuned have a great night and as always go jets go

A report out of Slovakia suggests that Winnipeg has denied the Montreal Canadiens a handful of similar offers for Rutger McGroarty. What were the Habs offering? Is this the baseline package we can except the Jets to field? How far off was Montreal from having their package accepted? Was it really that low of an offer? What is the latest Winnipeg can go without having this situation resolved? Returning to our season expectations for our skaters, what will Winnipeg’s blueline accomplish this season? Is it finally time for Morrissey to earn his first-ever Norris trophy?

  1. Habs can guarantee a middle 6 spot to McGroarty, so it makes sense for the player. Jets should pull the trigger if they can push for a better d prospect like Mailloux + late 1st round. If Jets let McGroarty back to school, it is over, they get nothing.

  2. A prospect, a roster and a pick for a prospect? Is this supposed to be comedy? There is no guarantee this guy will ever be a roster player, and any team would be foolish to offer more than a prospect "or" a pick!
