The New York Islanders Have Signed a Former 1st Round Pick but Where Does He Fit In with the Isles?

follow the show on x atck on Isles and you could follow me gil Martin on X at ice Wars nyr vsny we’ll keep you up to date on all things Islanders all year long during the offseason that’s hirings firings trade rumors free agency the draft if it’s happening to the New York Islanders we’ll cover it here on the lock on Islanders podcast and it’s always great to talk a little Islanders hockey with you game time or anytime so the Islanders made a signing late Wednesday uh kind of Wednesday evening and it uh is involving a former first round draft pick uh the Islanders signing Center uh also can play Wing but naturally a center Liam FY uh a former first round pick 18th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets back in 2018 he is 24 years old won’t turn 25 until February a native of Scarboro Ontario and here is a guy who has essentially bounced around a little bit uh 6’2 193 pounds you know decent uh size and has a lot of speed I mean the reason he was a first round pick the reason he went 18th overall is his speed and and essentially he has played 102 NHL games uh 12 of them last year with Nashville the rest all with the Blue Jackets and he has seven goals 22 points and 16 penalty minutes over the course of his NHL career now he also spent time with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL last year had 10 goals and 16 points in 28 games here is the bottom line with Liam FY speed which is something we know the Islanders really really need that is the biggest part of his game but the other aspects of his game have always been a bit of a question mark and you know he played 90 games with Columbus over five years which means he did not really stick and then when he basically was waved by the Blue Jackets claimed by Nashville uh you know Nashville had him up for a few games 12 games had three assists then he goes down to Milwaukee played in as I said 28 games there had 16 points points but Barry trotz the GM in Nashville decides not to give FY a qualifying offer and basically he became a free agent the Islanders end up signing him it’s a two-way deal a oneye two-way deal with an aavv if he plays in the NHL of the league minimum 775,000 dollars and realistically you know he’s he’s a great skater he can accelerate really well he is very very fast and that means that the strength of his game is the four check he is not a great scorer he is not a great playmaker at this stage but he is essentially a kind of guy who either will play a lot of minutes in the AHL with the Bridgeport Islanders or if injury strike or he has a particularly strong training camp he is the kind of guy who can be on your fourth line in the NHL and look we know the Islanders need the speed and realistically you want to add had a fourth line guy with speed a guy who could play either the wing or Center you know it is very unlikely that Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin are coming back the Islanders would need to free up cap space to sign either one of them let alone both and realistically uh revamping that bottom you know that bottom that fourth line with Speedy players certainly would help this team now is this a an earth shattering kind of a move that is going to make the Islanders Stanley Cup contenders no no it’s not but is this a move that increases depth in the organization and gives the Islanders an AHL player who can easily step up to the NHL and not hurt you and can give your team a little bit of a jump a little bit of a different kind of uh Dimension with the speed that they have been lacking absolutely and think about this whether it’s at Bridgeport or whether it’s on Long Island you have a speedy guy like Julian gotier and you have a speedy guy like uh Liam FY all of a sudden you put those two guys on a fourth line with Casey Zas or Kyle mlan or or even with Simon holmstrom you’ve got some guys who can really motor and if you think back to the Islanders under Barry trots one of the things that made the Islanders so successful was that they were considered a team that was really difficult to play against you might be able to beat them but you’re not going to enjoy it okay you’re going to know you were in a battle and you’re going to have to fight for everything you get adding another guy with speed gives the Islanders the opportunity to be more difficult to play against here is a guy who has seven NHL career goals in 102 games you know that’s a five maybe four and a half five goal Pace over 82 games he’s not going to be a goal scorer necessarily not even at the AHL level but he can add something to your roster and again at this point when you have no cap space and you need speed not just at the NHL level but throughout the organization again you’re trying to replace the speed of rousan is kov at Bridgeport this is not a bad signing by L larell it doesn’t move the goal post significantly but you never know how Liam FY could help both Bridgeport and the NHL Islanders and if it doesn’t work out you could always wave him you could always uh bury him in Bridgeport and it’s not a big deal if that is indeed what happens and because it’s a two-way contract it’s not going to hurt the Islanders cap if they send him down all right we have got a lot more to get to on today’s show the fisherman Jersey it’s not dead yet it has been revived we’re going to talk about that plus we’re going to check in on Danny Nelson the Islanders top pick second round in the 2023 NHL draft talk about where he you know how he did his first year at Notre Dame uh in the NC AA so we’ll talk about that and for our Islanders birthday of the day uh an Islanders Winger who was with the team in the very late 80s into the early 90s and a former first round pick second overall by the Islanders let’s see if you can guess who that is we’ve day so a little news a little surprising news maybe in Islander land the fisherman Jersey which has been very divisive among Islander fans it’s a lot again what but not exactly where you might think the Bridgeport Islanders have now made the fisherman Jersey their new primary Jersey and uh you know it used to be it was the Islanders reverse retro jersey a couple of years ago it was the alternate jersey for the Bridgeport Islanders now it is the primary Jersey and that is uh definitely interesting and I guess it’s another way to connect Bridgeport with the big Club on Long Island there are now you’ll see and if you go to the Bridgeport Islanders or New York Islanders official website you’ll see the the Jersey there are some changes from the classic Islander uh fisherman Jersey there’s no longer a goal behind the fisherman who either looks like Stan Fishler or the Gorton’s fisherman or if Stan Fishler was the Gorton’s fisherman uh but anyway the goal is no longer behind him in this logo although he still is holding the hockey stick and now the word bridgport is above the Islanders in block letters uh and there is a newly styled uh be in the text of the word Bridgeport so again to me you know this is kind of a a a a nice little uh change for Bridgeport and I like it better I definitely like it better as the Bridgeport Islanders logo than as the new New York Islanders logo and I I’ll tell you why and and and again maybe it’s my own personal experience and bias but here I go uh when I think of the of the fisherman logo the the dividing part of the fisherman logo has been this Islander fans who are old enough to remember when the team changed the logo in the mid to late 90s tend not to like the fisherman logo it reminds them of a time when ownership struggled to pay the bills where they weren’t willing to spend money and the team on the ice was well to say the least struggling in a big way it was the time when you’re trading away your best players like Ziggy paly and you’re losing a lot of hockey games and fans at the time in the mid90s were kind of a upset with the way that you know the the franchise went away from the logo that the team had won four straight Stanley Cups with in addition opposing fans jumped all over the Islanders the we want fish sticks chant from Rangers fans especially became a big thing and when the Islanders were losing and you heard that let’s just say it wasn’t a good memory for me and for a lot of Islander fans old enough to remember now for younger Islander fans who don’t remember the mid to late 90s and the original fisherman jerseys they just looked at the logo itself it was different it was you know kind of cool to them because of the fact that it represented something a little retro and and and again refreshing so they kind of liked the the fisherman Jersey and they made it a part of you know they they were the guys buying the the men and women and girls and boys buying the fisherman Jersey tended to skew younger because of that that you know they just like the look of the darn thing and they didn’t have the negative association with the Jersey itself so by putting the fisherman Jersey down in Bridgeport I think you’re keeping as part of the Islanders organization and their Heritage but you’re not making it part of the Islanders uh NHL team for now and I think that’s kind of the perfect place for it uh we’ll see how it’s received by hockey fans in Bridgeport but as of right now I I’m not opposed to having that be the logo the Islanders AHL farm club one other move by the way in addition to Liam FY the Islanders also resigning Ty Thompson uh to another one-year two-way deal with uh Bridgeport again the two-way deal he makes the league minimum if he plays on Long Island if he plays at Bridgeport he’ll earn $175,000 uh playing down there remember now Thompson had 51 games with Bridgeport last year ended up with 14 points and he was originally a fourth round pick of the New Jersey Devils and the Islanders acquired him uh in November of last year in a trade for Arno durando so uh Thompson will be back in the organization and again to me a guy who could steady things in the AHL and if you need someone called up for a game or two who’s not GNA hurt you Ty Thompson while not my first choice you know certainly could fill that role and give the New York Islanders a a temporary shortterm boost I do not view him at this stage in his career as an NHL Prospect so again you know these are great little moves or or good little moves for the organization but Ty Thompson 24 uh will turn actually 25 today so he’s turning 25 not a not a prospect at this stage he’s played 11 and HL games one assist in those games it came in 2021 with the Devil and yes he played three years with Providence College in hockey East so two signings by the Islanders that will almost certainly affect Bridgeport and May in some small way or slightly bigger way depending on how things break have an impact on the big Club at some point during the season all right we have got more to get to on today’s show you know we talked a lot about this year’s draft and we have more coverage coming of the players the Islanders selected this year but what about last year’s top pick the second rounder Danny Nelson how did he do his first year at Notre Dame we’re going to talk about that and a whole lot more including our Islanders birthday the day next on today’s locked on Islanders podcast lock on has launched the first ever National Sports 247 streaming Channel on YouTube now it’s also available on Amazon Fire TV and the free Fire TV channels app locked on sports today is here for you 247 covering the top sports stories of the day with the local Experts of locked on plus our national shows covering every League fine locked on sports today now available on the free Fire TV channels app so let’s talk a little bit about Danny n nson now you may remember Danny Nelson was the Islanders top pick not first round because the Islanders did not have a first round pick in 2023 but Danny Nelson was their first round pick a center left-handed shot out of born in Maple Grove Minnesota another Islanders like their Minnesota guys 63202 and a lot of Scouts had projected Nelson to be somewhere in the late first round he ended up lasting until the 49th overall pick and the Islanders grabbed him there here is a kid who is going to turn 19 on August 3rd and spent last year basically with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the Big 10 college hockey conference and and you know the big concern was his his consistency which sometimes you need a little maturity to get and again that old Bugaboo the lack of speed and Notre Dame was not a great team last year uh they finished with a 15 19 and two record but one thing that was true Danny Nelson had a solid freshman year and he was kind of a two-way Center played really well in his own Zone knew what to do when he didn’t have the puck and that is certainly something the Islanders Patrick gu Lula morelo value and you know he was really solid in his own end at preventing opposing forwards from setting up uh in the proper position and making them work you also saw him at the world juniors last year being one of the better defensive forwards for Team USA now at Notre Dame he played in 30 Games had nine goals 14 assists and was a plus five on a team with a losing record 32 penalty minutes that was another concern took a lot of minor penalties sometimes that is due to a little late Islander fans we all know this a little too well you stop moving your feet you end up with the hold or the trip or the hook or whatever the case may be uh but again you got to figure at the age of 18 playing at the next level after playing for the US national development team these are the kind of things that Danny Nelson hopefully works on as he continues his career with the Fighting Irish down in South Bend so overall a solid first year for Danny Nelson got the experience at the world juniors under 20 championships had a good year at Notre Dame for a you know mediocre hockey team and just overall you got to be pleased with his initial progress and you know look it doesn’t look at this point like Danny Nelson is going to be a big goal scorer at the NHL level but if he’s a middle six forward or even a you know third or fourth line forward who really plays solid defense and can add 15 to 20 goals a year I I would take that uh at this point from an Islanders team that before Cole Eiserman was selected Danny Nelson was considered by most experts to be the number one Prospect in the Islanders Prospect pool so we’ll continue to keep an eye on and hopefully he will continue his development another season at Notre Dame then maybe does he come to Bridgeport does he try to sign a professional contract again these are all things we’re going to learn over the course of the next year or so I’m always be keeping an eye on Danny Nelson and all of the New York Islanders top prospects time now for our Islanders birthday of the day and uh well Thursday was the 53rd birthday of former Islanders Winger Dave chowski the native of Edmonton 6 foot1 200 pounds second overall pick first round by the Islanders in 1989 made his NHL debut with the Islanders in 8990 played in 34 games had eight goals 14 points and 45 penalty minutes that next season he went up to 56 games which was his career high in the NHL but only had five goals and 14 points CH chowski struggled at the NHL level ended up staying with the Islanders through the 9495 season and then joined the Blackhawks which were his only other NHL team where he played games played in the AHL the now defunct IHL and then finished his pro career in Germany and Austria actually played through 20062 2007 only 126 career NHL games 15 goals 31 points and 144 penalty minutes he did play two playoff games for the Islanders in 1994 playoff series that Islander fans would certainly like to forget and uh did not have have a point he went on to coach uh a little bit in uh the WHL and bchl but uh his teams really struggled and he stopped coaching after the 2021 2022 season one of his better games as an Islander well a memorable one for sure October 24th 1989 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum the ad Oilers uh the visiting team here and uh you know no no Wayne Gretzky at this point but a lot of talented players still with Edmonton and in this game the goalies Bill Ranford for the Oilers Glenn Healey in between the pipes for the Islanders and our Islanders birthday of the day Dave chowski he got the scoring started with a power play goal in the final minute of the opening period Pat Flatley and Norton with the assist that made it one- nothing Islanders goals by Pat LaFontaine and Brad low gave the Isles a three to1 lead but third period goals by Yari Curry and Martin Jelena tied the game at 3-3 and that’s how it ended for Dave chowski he had a goal he had five shots on goal the goal did come on the power play and the five shots on goal tied him with Pat La Fontaine for the team lead in a game that was uh 28 shots for Edmonton and 27 for the Islanders and fittingly it ended in a 3-3 tie so Dave chowski is our Islanders birthday of the day I want to thank everyone for making lockon Islanders your first listen every day every dayers will be back on Monday with all the latest Islanders news notes and happening so make sure you join us for that have a great weekend everybody stay safe and of course let’s go Islanders

The New York Islanders have signed a former first round pick to a one-year deal but where will he fit in with the franchise? Lou Lamoriello signed Liam Foudy to a two-way deal. The good news: this kid has lots of speed. The bad news: the rest of his game has not developed like his speed has. We’ll discuss what role he’ll play this year.

The Fisherman Jersey lives but not exactly on Long Island. The Bridgeport Islanders have announced that a slightly altered version of the Fisherman Jersey will be their new primary look. We break it all down for you.

And we look at the progress of the Isles top pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Danny Nelson after his first season at Notre Dame.

  1. Wow foudy. I saw this guy play for london knights (coached by a famous scumbag). Just like you said lots of speed, not much else. No big offensive numbers to come. Could be another 18 to linger on bottom lines. BTW the price for laine has supposedly been set. Similar to cap/cane deal where kutzy went to canes for a third with caps retaining 50% of laine's remaining cap charge. Since laine is younger and a better scorer make it a second and go get laine louzer. Isles don't need every speed guy out there with no offensive game louzer.

  2. As I said a few days ago, lack of depth hurt this team past couple of seasons. Hopefully, Lou builds with some NHL-ready players to step in when a player or two go down with injuries. Better to have them before the season starts than to try to trade during the season. Losing Schneider before last season and not having an NHL ready goalie to come up when Varly went down hurt big time and hopefully one of the AHL guys are ready when called on or Lou gets one before the season starts.
