does every single week is stepen pjon Garner he is a writer over at right side of the sun podcaster extraordinaire at the All City Network and we’re going to go through all the things we have our eyes on set the Stage Preview summer league a little bit so let’s start with the first round pick the man of the moment Stephen in League head coach Vince larza what do you what do you want to see what what are you hoping to see from a player like that in the summer league environment because he’s not going to put put up buckets as as far as we can expect so what other things do you want to watch him do and kind of prove at this next level this next chapter of his career speaking to Ryan dun specifically right yep yeah it’s it’s hard to gauge I look at him through the same lens as we kind of saw with tumani chra last summer league and just kind of it’s not going to always be just the the the Box the box score numbers in terms of okay how many how many shots did he make how many points did he put up did he get to the free throw line a lot I think it’s going to be seeing what’s the confidence like when he gets these opportunities on the catch is he thinking about what his decisions going to be or is he playing in point five where he’s catching in letting it fly catching it and moving it stampeding the catch or catching it and then getting into a drive and playing off a triple thre from there there’s a certain Cadence to the decision making within that that I think will consistently be indicative of the confidence that he’s operating with and then the other big thing for me is like we kind of talked about before we hopped on how is he looking when he’s spaced is he getting into those cutting principles that I’ve spoken to that I feel like will help to mitigate some of the spacing in terms of spacing to shoot issues that he might I see and how often is he kind of cycling through that decision- making quickness with the cutting ability yeah it’s it’s funny there’s some aspects of him on offense where I mean I don’t think he has quite he’s not as old he doesn’t figure at least early on to maybe have quite the level of feel but I’ve kind of been comparing it in my head on the offensive end to tumani Kamara just in the what we saw start to flash from him in terms of just making the right decision occupying space at the right times not hesitating on things being a smart ball mover because kamaro was also not a guy you figured was just going to come in and and run 50 pick and roll in a game and score 20 even in a summer league environment it was really about kind of filling in the gaps being a good team guy and he did that so I I I guess I’m sort of looking at the same things with dun obviously we’re going to see if he has to take open threes do they go in if he gets to the free throw line do those go in but you know he quietly was he didn’t have a lot of on ball opportunities but his his assist a turnover ratio this past year at Virginia was pretty close to one to one not ugly you know he he’s able to kind of make the right reads at times and and everything else so I’m sure we’ll learn a little but maybe not a ton because he’s going to be around summer league talent and a summer league environment but on the defensive end I definitely want to see him you know Vince lard said this in the media availability this week that he you know is already surprising some people I think around the Suns with his ability to make help defense and rim protection plays as a wing just recovering in the blink of an eye or rotating in the blink of an eye to take away shots at the rim and and protect the paint despite not being a center and those are plays that you can see guys you know uh there’s going to be no shortage of dudes on the other team driving to the basket trying to Chuck shots and what dun can do to just erase some of that stuff and and make those reads and make those athletic plays that will start to just show kind of how for real this all is I’m expecting to see it so it won’t surprise me but it definitely will be kind of a fulfillment of the potential we think this guy has yeah it it will be and I want to go back to a conversation I was able to have uh a little a little while ago just kind of speaking to speaking to how can how can Defenders especially with the evolution of offense the ability for players to make tough shots regardless of your contest um how can teams and individual Defenders just be effective in that and uh Chris Finch mentioned to me that he feels more than anything it’s the ability to impact the release you can cycle through schemes you can cycle through coverages you can cycle through a lot of stuff um matchup wise at the end of the day it’s going to come down to when that shot goes up how impactful is your contest and are you able to bother the release of the player that’s taking whatever shot is to come within that offensive possession and I think that’s a particular element that I try to emphasize and highlight with Bo bow that’s also something that I’ve emphasized with Kevin Durant both of those players having seven plus foot wingspans while also being Fleet of foot being able to slide and contain I think that’s something that Ryan dun can certainly put on showcase my thing is is it going to sustain can he do it can you do it in a um a consistent manner to where he’s shutting down actions against players at a summer league level that we can see remnants of something that can translate to the NBA level and then the other big thing is how impactful is that help defense things even though his Collegiate level the summer league is not as big of a jump but the game is going to be a little bit faster there’s going to be a little bit more Nuance there’s going to be a little bit more space how impactful is the template that we saw from him being Elite on defense on a Collegiate level and the best defender in this draft by many of the people that we trust and believe in in terms of their scouting reports how much does that translate I think that’s going to be the biggest thing in in the last thing how chaotic is it going to be for him on defense how much is he springboarding the offense into transition other way and how impactful is his athleticism in changing ends of the floor going to be by way of that it’s going to be good within some of that I would also throw in I’ve been thinking and and a lot of people have been talking about Cooper flag a bunch lately and he’s another guy that has some of that defensive potential to just consume space and be one of the answers you can have for modern NBA almost unguardable offensive basketball um but I was going to say it’ll be nice too to have a a schedule for the Suns where they’re playing teams that are going to really try to make the most of this and some teams just don’t some teams rosters are built in such a way where it doesn’t really make sense but you know first up they have the Warriors who Trace Jackson Davis is playing in this summer league I I’m not exactly sure why he was really good as a rookie GE Santos a guy we saw make a a comeback push against the Suns back in November Brandon psky is playing you know I don’t I don’t really get why they’re doing that but it’s going to be a test and we know the Warriors play a style that can be it can be difficult to read after that they have Indiana just their uptempo guard kind of heavy stuff is going to be good and then Oklahoma City they always I mean they’ve been putting on a show in the in the Utah Summer League already so you know we’ll see what they can do with their talent maybe more of a one-on-one opportunity for dun with some of the Wings and and perimeter scoring Talent they’ve put together so it’ll be a good test from that standpoint with all of that um where did this uh Chris Finch conver ation happened what did you cover a game in the playoffs or did you do you just know him did you call him up the other day yeah I just I just texted him like hey finchy what’s good my guy yeah that’s what it sounded like to me no I had a chance to I had the opportunity to speak with him at Allstar Weekend back in February uh during his Med availability and uh he gave a nice detail answer it was fun to kind of talk basketball with somebody who’s stamping impact on the defensive end was had reverve throughout the entire NBA last season uh defended at historic rates across multiple stretches of the regular season so that was fun to hear him kind of just speak to what he’s been seeing in that perspective not a surprise that he gave the answer he gave given the way that he Unleashed Jaden McDaniels on the world uh this past season as as another great example of a player uh that can do a lot of that Chris Finch is funny I mean I did get to be I was around him a bit for the playoffs and he he seems bored to death in media and then he’ll just whip whip out an awesome answer out of nowhere like he’ll just kind of drone on and then you’re like hold on did he just say something really smart and I missed it almost because I thought he was tired of me it’s funny but he’s always itching to talk basketball and I think that’s the is that you have to scratch with a lot of the head coaches in the NBA that are built like him I think tyou is of that same ilk as well seems kind of bored with the mundane is but when you ask him like a basketball question now he’s opening up an entire box and gives you A8 minute quot exactly exactly one of those ones where as a as a writer when you’re doing it you’re like okay is this over yet I’m still typing what’s going on yeah um all right let’s jump to Oso igodo Jaylen Bridges and the rest of this summer Suns roster and what we’re looking for there coming up next first Today’s Show brought to you by eBay Motors passion drive and patience formula for winning championships is also what keeps your die alive eBay Motors has everything you need to your ride or die alive at ebaymotors.com eligible items only exclusion Supply eBay guaranteed fit only available to us customers all right Stephen so let’s jump to ooso eodo the sun’s 40th overall pick this year rookie Center out of Marquette somebody that is also going to be a little bit of a of a f guy to watch in my opinion um I’m sure there are going to be some awesome finishes I’m sure he’s going to bust out some unexpected passes just knowing the IQ that he has and you mentioned with Dunn that the summer league will be a little bit sped up I think Oso’s processing and brain power make me think he he’ll be ready for that maybe more so than arguably anybody of the young guys on this whole summer roster but to me it’s it’s the defensive end that I’m going to be curious about how do they use him what types of plays and situations does he look the most comfortable with how much is he fouling some of those things just what kind of progress and development place is he in as a rookie as a young big coming into the pro game and what can we sort of start to expect from him as his career kicks off here yeah I’m I’m I’m there with you I think a lot of the the questions are going to come on the defensive end of the floor how well does he hold up with his switches defending against um borderline NBA level guards to actual NBA level guards um is the impact of his switching similar to what it was on a Collegiate level how well does he hold up defending in space um and then I think the other big thing which we didn’t see him do to the um the best of uh what people might have desire from him is Rim protection um he’s going to naturally be in that scenario more consistently on the NBA level than he was on the college level and it’s just a matter of can he just can he just be solid enough he’s not going to be Dwight Howard in 2011 we know that but can he just reach a certain level in functionality on defense to where he can still stay on the floor while also being able to get the value that his switchability and versatility provides and um I think looking at him on the defensive end that’s going to be kind of what I’m looking forward to most but I’m also looking forward to seeing in a positive strength suit um perspective and through that lens how well is IQ translates to the NBA level on the defensive side of the floor as well I think Nally will speak to the offense as well but I think those are the things that I’m kind of looking forward to most from him on that side of the floor in particular and just two off of that right like how how big does he look yeah that’s a good one at the NBA level right just like you kind of it’s one of those things you feel it or you don’t in terms of size for a lot of these young guys where you you know I watched him and even at Marquette and I’m not going to pretend like I was some kind of expert on the guy but you know I watched kic stuff when we thought they were drafting him and then sa gdo once we knew that he was the pick so I I’ve seen a decent amount of at least the clips and breakdowns and everything and he felt at times like kind of a smaller 610 in college to me you know um and his wingspan’s a little bit plus but not not some sort of you know Zach Ed guy or anything of course so what does it look like from that length and height standpoint standing reach how much is he able to impact shots around the rim and contest on the perimeter or different things like that but then also you know it’s not quite you know I mentioned like Trace Jackson Davis for instance and and whatnot you’re not going to face a dominant like post scorer in summer league and that’s not really how the game is played in that environment so maybe it’s not going to be the best test of that but maybe you know on offensive rebounds and box outs and things like the other kind of size is he strong compared to some of the guys that he’s matching up against that’ll be an interesting question as well but um what else around this across this roster who else catches your eye what else catches your eye from a Personnel standpoint we’ll go to scheme and everything to close things out but any other players you have your eye on absolutely so anybody that knows me knows that I have an affinity for guards and boy did this the Phoenix SC the Phoenix Suns really put together just a crazy crop of guards to assess from a multitude of different lenses obviously the first name I think that’s going to stand out to most that either if you watched it casually or you watched it closely on a Collegiate level buo buy from uh from Northwestern uh the the their their programs alltime leading scorer an abundance of buckets I think is just the best way to put it with him he’s just such a fire cracker he’s just such a fun unpredictable style of guard now I know he’s not the biggest guard yes he has weaknesses but I think the for as loud as his offense can be I think he can by way of this opportunity with the Phoenix Suns and summer league really kind of carve out a niche for himself make a name for himself put out some good tape and film and really find a way onto somebody’s um summer league well not summer league roster but somebody’s uh g-league roster going into next season I think he’s a guard that went obviously would not drafted but has a ton of potential and I think this opportunity with the style of play that the this Phoenix Sun summer league team is likely to play it’s going to be fun to kind of gauge them from and then the other big name for me I’m big on guards I’m also big on Michigan State so my guy Tyson Walker not unlike Bou is a player that has a ton of unpredictability to this game can play on the ball be effective off the ball as well gets after it on defense isn’t necessarily the biggest in stature again but there’s a certain level of dog and a certain level of competitor in those two particular players and I think there’s going to be a lot of suns fans that might not watch college basketball that much that are going to develop an affinity for both of those two basketball players come to end of the sun’s um summer league um summer league stay whether that be them ending in the championship with the summer league championship trophy or if they you know just have a solid showing and or a fun team to kind of gauge in the say definitely I like both of those shout outs I do you think that they would so they’re going into this with one open two-way slot we haven’t mentioned Jaylen Bridges but he’ll be there as well out of Baylor already got that slot on draft night then Colin Gillespie from Denver who’s been in the league for two years already spent a while at college so he’s a little older was on a two-a with Denver and now is is coming to Phoenix not playing summer league though but that already means that they have one point guard type in that slot do you think if buoy or Walker played well enough they would you put another point guard type guy one position guy in your two-way mix or would you say well we kind of want a big there because we already have a wing and a guard what what would be your mindset on that my personal mindset is I would just see who’s playing best of the players that you’re assessing for that particular position um I do think the Suns ultimately try to eror on the bigger of that group so either a wing or a center to kind of having that rotation for that particular U position within the roster but I think that’s the fun of this summer league team because I think just looking at it on paper there’s a handful of names that you could say might potentially be able to etge their name into that two-way role for the team and I think with that it’s going to breed a level of competition not just conducive to successful reps on the summer leag stage but also successful Reps for the team because you got so many players competing and understanding that there’s this one opportunity here available it’s up for grabs who’s gonna go take it you know for sure on that note last guy to shout out David Rody yeah uh surprised to see him on it especially with Gillespie not on it you know I don’t some of those decisions I think can be agent negotiations and different things that come into play and there is something respectable I think from Rody standpoint the dude was starting in playoff games two years ago now he’s uh you know playing summer league again and that and and the humility to do that I think is is solid and it sounds like from uh what coach larza has said that he’s kind of embraced the leadership opportunity within all of that so far in Camp and he said as for as long as he’s been in Phoenix larza which is basically you know since bud got hired he’s been working out here and and been impressing the staff with just his kind of mature approach to all of that so that’s good from a from a mindset standpoint but sounds sounds like they’re going to empower him to to do a lot of different things maybe handle the ball and take shots create shots defend good matchups and and really showcase himself and you know he’s had a lot of opportunities already in his NBA career but it’s never too late for a guy like that who was a first round pick and if he can just show that he can knock down shots and you know be a positive impact player then maybe that helps him be on the radar for some minutes come regular season time and the Suns could use a player like you know if the best version of David Rody is a player you know they were in on Haywood Highsmith they we all wanted them to sign toian Prince like not far off from that all things considered maybe not the athletic guy but everything else kind of there so I’ll be curious I’m not saying it’s going to happen but if he if he could do it then it it would go a long way for sure yeah I I would love to see David Ry kind of etch out a role and really earn an opportunity um not unlike we saw with opportunities for players like K to Bas di Naser Li last season when they got brought into the Suns context I think David Ry is a player that can he can do things on the margins for this team that can certainly be impactful and I think he has the requisite stature and athleticism to do so in an impactful manner as well so it’s gonna be fun to see what he pulls out in terms of the film on uh on the summer league stage and uh how Mike boen holds her assesses engages him from there but I do think he’s the type of player that can certainly help as you said if he does earn that opportunity and he’s only 23 right so you know he’s been in the league a little while now but it’s not like he’s beyond the point where he can turn things around and keep developing as a player so interested to see that all right let’s talk about scheme what are we going to see this how is this team going to play what are we going to see from them and what can that how can we maybe start to draw some some pictures of what things will be come the fall based off of all of that what do we want to see on that side of things coming up next first Today’s Show brought to you by better help making therapy easier more accessible for everybody betterhelp.com lockon NBA today to get 10% off your first month that’s betterhelp hp.com lockon NBA all right let’s close it out Stephen so what what are you most curious about from a style standpoint as we get our first sites of the Mike buen Holzer system whatever this coaching staff’s imprint on the style of this team is going to be what’s the biggest thing you want to start to learn as we see all that uh it’s it’s hard for me to just say one answer to this question so I kind of do it like half and half uh first thing he’s going to be on the defensive end of the floor principal wise uh what are they doing with their switches um like are they like are they aggressive on the outer thirds of the floor with their act with their defense in um reaction to coverages and different actions that they’re seeing from opponents um like are they how is Ryan dun being featured within all of that especially when he’s involved directly in action I think those little things are going to be something that I’m going to be kind of watching for on defense and then just kind of quickly on offense the spacing template how often are they getting into empty Corner actions how often are they playing into movement from one side to the other with intention and what’s the the general like Cadence in terms of uh how often certain action are being featured like things like that I’m going to really be kind of having an eye for in summer league yeah to me it’s two things that I’m not actually sure we’re going to learn because of because it’s summer league your answers are better but the two that came to mind for me uh one how fast do they play how much of an emphasis do they make are they running off of maid shots are they just taking you know first pass shots often when they’re there are they you know getting space set up early in the clock things like that that just kind of tell you that it’s it’s planned now that’s the part to me that you know summer league is can be so messy even if shots aren’t going in all the freaking fouls that get called just stop the tempo of the game so it you know it might not be the best but I think there will be some stretches when things are flowing where you can see hey you know they they three possessions in a row off of Misses they put up a hit aead pass and tried to get something early how are they what does it look like when they settle down after that and just their kind of decision tree from transition to as well in this summer league environment but what does that look like how do they do it how how much do they emphasize it you know um and who are the beneficiaries right like I think that’s where we can start to see some of the Personnel stuff make more sense to us like you said with the spacing and just where they’re funneling those shots who’s the is it drive and kick is it you know guys running off screens like there’s all sorts of the why the how but uh but big picture we know the team wants to try to do that and that bud has historically gotten that out of his team so this will be the first look we have at at what that all will look like so yeah I mean I think we can agree it’s a little tough but I think we’ll come away from Summer League feeling like okay generally speaking here’s some things they want to do and how they’re going to go about it yeah for sure and I think especially with igodo he can be such a fun basketball player watch on offense you talked about his processing um and just his General IQ I’m curious how often especially now naturally if they do lean into his usage more you’re not going to expect for them to say okay we’re going to take the template we saw in summer league with eodo apply it to youse of nerkish and just roll the ball out from there in the regular season like it’s not GNA be copy and paste like that but I am curious within the principles of Mike bueno’s offense how often is igodo put in playmaking scenarios not just in pick and roll with boo buy and Tyson Walker and insert gar here but generally speaking how often are they going to delay actions how often are they getting it to him in pistol actions potentially and then playing pistol five kind of like the um Sacramento Kings do with sabonis or the Miami he do with bat bio at times or the Rockets have done at times as well I’m curious like how is his usage going to come about over the course of summer league and what the guards from the from the primary action but also on the backside of actions are doing are there a lot of stagnant spacing possessions are they screening pinin for each other are they just exchanging just to put the defenders in different positions in terms of their principles within their scheme are they flowing off of staggers on the weak side while a two-player action is going on on the strong side like little things like that within their process I think will give us just hints at what Mike buenos is looking to establish and naturally when you get to when we get to September and training camp starting and it’s flowing into the regular season through the preseason we’ll kind of be able to connect the dots from there yeah it’s principles right it’s it’s it’s just foundational philosophies of of how they’re going to play and whether these players execute at the same level of Kevin Durant Deon Booker and everyone else you know we know the answer already but but it it’ll show us what they’re thinking about right and and I think too like to add on to that but butd is we can talk about the mic buher system or what his principles may be but he took a year off and historically we’ve seen the best coaches make the most out of that he watched the league for a year you know what I mean and he got to think about freshly what he would do and he has a different roster than he’s ever had before and different types of pieces so it’s not just well they ran this with Al Horford 10 years ago so they’ll do it again you know it’ll be it’ll be something unique I’m sure as well the other thing the last thing is just who who starts like we’re talking about who is kind of featured and what they might get to do but you know if they start the the main guys we’re sort of expecting like I would probably you know if if it was to go that way it would be buoy whatever other guard you want to say and then Bridges dun and igodo most likely or maybe it’s it’s Rody over Bridges and Donan gadoro that’s pretty stacked in terms of a lot of guys they’re trying to velop and give opportunities to so it’ll be interesting to just kind of see the the responsibility and how that’s all divvied up just or do they maybe do an unorthodox type of rotation within that just to give each guy some time to to have some on ball reps or to take the primary defensive matchup and things like that I mean you’re not really playing to win first and foremost in this environment so I’ll be curious uh but all right I’ll be back Saturday night recapping game number one against Golden State Warriors I will hopefully have some perspective from the players and Coach live from Las Vegas that night all come into to you so hit follow or subscribe get that episode in your feed and more throughout the summer read Stephen in the group over at Bri side of the sun listen to him on phnx and we’ll be back Saturday night [Music]
