145- Early offseason updates–2023-24 NHL Season; Thomas Pepin NHL Talk

all for for hello everyone this is Thomas Pepin NHL talk I’m Thomas Pepin and I just discovered I cut myself and let’s talk about the NHL um so um basically as normal going to do a recap of recent news so this is is going to [Music] cover uh give me a sec here well just before the free agency period so that’s June 28 to today’s date uh well news as of um like 15 minutes ago um and yeah so since it’s the off season there’s not as many uh different topics to cover well like there’s the news so whatever happens in the news but then besides that there’s really only waiver signings and trades so um that being said I have you know a couple things to talk about related to that I don’t know if it’s going to come up no it won’t come up right away because we’re doing the news first okay so anyways uh so let’s start with the news so the stream that I did last was just before the awards if I’m not mistaken uh give me a sec I don’t know if this changed over correctly yeah it did okay um yeah so anyway so just wanted to briefly go over the award winners so um I mean you can kind of see them there McKinnon for HART which makes sense he’s been deserving I think for a number of years but there’s just like when there’s so many good players it’s difficult to actually give it to somebody other than McDavid or you know uh what was it COV won it last year was it no was McDavid when did didn’t COV win it one year I guess not so anyways but that’s an example so kov could have won it um oh he must have won it anyways doesn’t matter so much CU that’s uh hi Christian thanks for tuning in you’re not late I’m late actually I was supposed to start it an hour ago so um okay otherwise Bedard one Calder barov skki Hughes Norris huk vzna slaven lady Bing that one I was very happy to see that he won that because he was deserving um and then otherwise the rest not all that crazy um so anyways just wanted to pull that back up since it wasn’t covered last stream um next up the initial rosters of the four nations face offs to be honest there’s like all this stuff’s kind of obvious um so these are are the initial rosters so it like I mean whatever plus I don’t even really care too much about the four nation’s face off so if it’s of interest to you then there you go um yeah so there were a number of buyouts which I thought was pretty crazy um I mean I know about like if you’re not getting value but you’re just burning cap space which to me is just ridiculous so um yeah like do you want to have so it says it here so 2.3 million of a cap hit for a guy that’s not even there I don’t know and that’s the thing is like these GMS make so many bad decisions when it comes to contracts that it’s like you’re wasting space that’s why all these long-term contracts for guys that are not deserving are just it’s bonehead decisions so anyways uh but that’s more generally so yeah uh Flyers bought out Atkinson which I don’t know if I um agree with and it’s not even that bad of a cap hit so just I don’t know how many years he had the final year of his contract why don’t they just let him play it out I don’t know anyways and then it’s going to last over multiple Seasons so stupid anyways uh same thing with Skinner he has three years left and then so like you’re burning cap space like 6.4 and one one year so ridiculous um I don’t know what his stats were but like it just doesn’t make any sense 46 points in 74 games I would just you know write it out you made the bad call and then you’re just cuz like are you going to be able to spend um cap space for the coming season so I don’t know like are you going to be able to spend that difference in the dead cap plus the available cap to get better performance and I would say probably not I don’t know just doesn’t make sense to me but yeah so Skinner another guy bought out Schmidt bought out uh how much was he making per season 5.95 I mean here’s where it’s not because he doesn’t produce many points it’s where I could justify maybe buying outed defenseman but like still I don’t even like it uh Campbell I mean that’s another one where I could maybe justify it but still like why did you ever sign that stupid contract to begin with so stupid uh B bought out that one like I mean it’s not anything significant so big deal uh there’s a bunch of guys that weren’t given qualifying offers so um anybody of any great significance I mean all the guys that had excuse me that um were uh part of that legal issue related to Team Canada they all as far as I know we not given qualifying offers so and those included I think it was foot dub heart and I forget who else but anyways so a bunch of guys that would be well became available to be signed oh there it is here so uh formenton oh and McLoud where’s McLoud on the list oh there he is um but anyways so bunch of guys available that are young and have good potential so in my opinion it would be smart to take a chance on a whole bunch of them all of them I mean sign them for like league minimum and then worst case it doesn’t work out and then it costs you basically nothing so anyways uh I thought this was interesting so the NHL and the Players Association is considering 84 Game season um I think it would it said something about it would have to be after the yeah so after the bargaining agreement expires in September 2026 so um anyways so yeah the I mean more games they’re already playing a lot for such a rough sport um um it says it’s to have more rivalry games cool basically more Revenue as far as I’m concerned um yeah I mean I’m kind of indiff more games whatever but for the players I don’t know but that’s where negotiating with the Players Association basically I would argue they’re probably negotiating the cost player cost to health uh vers versus benefit of Greater Revenue which means uh better salaries and all that kind of stuff so um odds are they’re going to accept it uh if this seriously becomes considered but you know of course that remains to be seen and the fact that it’s been done before means just seems more likely that it’s going to happen again um yeah so that’s about that um so the NHL reinstated Bowman in quinnville after their ban related to a scandal I don’t like to talk too much about all that kind of stuff it’s it’s made public but and potentially for good reason but like I mean it’s more the politics of the game as far as I’m concerned and I don’t want to discuss that kind of stuff so um anyways so quinnville was a good coach don’t know if Bowman was that great of a GM I think he was he was GM right yeah um so anyways good coach available to teams if they want to take on you know the politics related to that um and uh GM I don’t know if he’s any good so can’t really say much like I mean they were competitive team when he was GM but uh I think it would have been what happened before him maybe maybe I should just look into that um his name is Stan Bowman because I don’t want to not give him credit when he’s do for credit for performance Blackhawks in 2009 uh 2009 where are you okay so they won the Stanley Cup you wouldn’t have been responsible for that conference quarterfinals conference quarterfinals Stanley Cup Conference Finals so I guess and when did he stop yeah so I mean I guess maybe he did a good job mind you the team would have been in place for a while but they kept doing well afterwards so maybe he is a good GM and then as a result that would mean that um yeah that maybe team could use them again if you want to deal with all the backlash associated with it if there would be I don’t like I’m assuming there probably would be at least in the short run uh so I guess that’s enough of that uh schedule was released least I mean if like there’s we know that teams play each other a number of times each season there’s not really much to talk about um there’s some notable dates here if you’re interested you can have a look but yeah not much more to say uh this is pretty cool news I guess um I mean to me well say that in a second so Jessica Campbell is the first woman NHL coach an assistant so I mean not a head coach so it’s not anything crazy significant now uh do they have her she was an assistant for the HL for a couple years so I mean who knows how she’s going to pan out for um the team but I mean again I’m all for trying somebody new whether it comes to coaches GMS all that kind of stuff so hey if she does great great she doesn’t well that’s how it is um now anyways going to what I was going to say to be honest to me so yes it’s good for women I guess when it comes to um because you need to have a first at some point but as far as I’m concerned like I don’t care if it’s a woman Coach man coach I don’t care anything about the gender or background of the coach all I about his performance so if she’s good great if she isn’t well whatever so um anyways but yeah I guess great news for women um you know somebody has to be the first woman coach and then eventually there’s going to be the first woman head coach and I mean I’m sure it’ll happen but yeah well see the one catch that’s I don’t know that’s a I guess a bit complicated about the subject is because no women have played in the NHL for anything more than a very short stint which Mino Rome did but that was I think more of not to take it away from her but I think it was more of a marketing thing had she been good enough she would have stayed with the team team or she would have played professionally with men’s teams but as far as I’m as far as I am aware she hasn’t played didn’t play with men’s teams afterwards let me check though how do you spell her name don’t know man how CH so maybe she did play with men’s teams she did play a bit well but I mean like look though it’s like one game here so maybe the whole NHL trial was justified from her track record but I mean if you look at it all she never really played anywhere so I’ll correct myself I don’t want to take it away from her she did play men’s hockey but not any significant amount so she deserves credit for the fact that she I think is the only woman to really have played uh well there’s what’s her face um that played in Europe for some League anyways it I mean all I’m saying is Well I guess the all that stuff’s kind of besides the point the point I’m trying to get to is without having played any time in men’s hockey any significant time in men’s hockey how do you develop knowledge of hockey from a men’s league perspective which is definitely different from the women’s league I mean there’s strategies that are going to be comparable similar like it’s it’s still hockey it’s there’s very tiny differences between men’s and women’s hockey but that being said like there are a lot of nuances about you know body checking does have an impact on positioning and um structure of play um the deployment of players at different times like there’s a lot to it that I would argue there’s significant enough difference where if you haven’t played maybe you you’ll be lacking on a bit of knowledge but then again I mean I don’t know if like even a lot of these uh NHL coaches that turn out being quite good never really played much though they played AHL or maybe a bit of college and then they turned out being good coaches so I mean I’m not going to say that it’s a massive difference between men and women when it comes to their history and experience with hockey but there’s some um so there’s always going to be probably a little bit of that making it and I so basically what I think I’m saying is justifiably so it would make sense that it would be more difficult for women to become uh coaches in men’s leagues but because the difference is so little and the fact that yeah some Co men coaches come from limited background and playing then does it really matter probably not um but there’s got to be some could only be maybe like a 5% difference in in playing background’s impact on coaching ability could even be 1% or it could be 0% so I’m all I’m saying is I’m just trying to talk out the the thought of women coaches just some potential drawbacks or hurdles if not drawbacks then so but like I said long story short I really don’t care I don’t care if a woman’s the head coach I don’t care if she’s owner I don’t care GM I don’t care it’s all about performance so we’ll see what happens and I I mean obviously in the future there’s going to be more women involved so I mean so because I see no significant really difference between men and women when it comes to this stuff then really it’s not a big story to me so anyways that’s that um so there’s a bunch of guys filing for salary arbitration um yikes some of these contracts Lucan in is he really worth 5.2 um jeez so it’s from evolving hockey is the uh Source I guess of all those projected contracts but I sure hope some of these don’t happen anyway so there’s a bunch of decent guys how great of players I mean that would be your call really For Me Maybe walstroms got good upside lingren got good upside maybe Lucan and nus is the only one really to me that’s all that significant when it comes to um these guys so anyways that’s about it for that we’ll see what the contracts turn out being I’m sure maybe some of those guys have already re resigned but um anyways okay so next piece of news so the Dallas Stars are no longer going to be dealing with uh what would you call it well basically I think it’s cable TV uh does it really say so Regional Sports network is what they call it uh whatever anyways it doesn’t matter so much where they’re coming from but basically just normal TV and then they’re going to be doing a streaming platform to watch games that are not uh nationally broadcasted so I think that’s great um didn’t it say it’s the first first men’s sports franchise in the US to move its local broadcasts from a regional Sports Network to a streamer so significant in that regard I guess and um yeah I think everything’s going to go towards streaming I don’t know why they haven’t already so yeah um guess that’s some news uh Chris Patrick who I know nothing about is going to be the new GM of Washington and then Brian mclen who was the previous GM is going to be president of hockey operations so who is Chris Patrick okay so he was a scout and then director director of player Personnel assistant GM so yeah this is like another great example of where totally on board try somebody new he’s worked his way up I mean side not this is exactly why I would never want to get involved in uh like this type of career because look he starts in 2008 and then only now becomes a GM like am i g am I GNA spend uh 16 years working my way up through an organization as much as I would love to be a GM of a franchise there’s 0% chance the only way I would ever do it is if I was able to like jump into Maybe [Music] uh like an assistant not an assistant GM but like a a GM’s assistant kind of so I don’t know what kind of title you’d assign special advisor or not that I would that sounds better than it actually would be but basically where I would be getting involved in things like relatively quickly as opposed to having to work my way up like this there’s no no chance I would ever want want to do that as a career yes I like hockey but I’m not gonna I don’t know maybe I’m too arrogant I guess in in a sense to work my way up but yeah I just wouldn’t do that I’d rather do whatever I feel like doing or would I’ve done already anyways so yeah so to be GM given his background is working his way up great like I mean I’m all for it it’s good to try somebody new and then you always have those experienced people in other roles like um ML and um being president of hockey operations so you always got that support there even that’s the thing is like just get a good PE set of people around you whether it’s a coach or GM and try somebody new cuz just trying the same status quo people that always fail just makes no sense experience is everybody in like the business World puts experience ahead of um potential and I just it drives me so nuts I’d rather fail having tried something significant then go with the status quo and be a which as far as I’m concerned is failing because all it is is about winning you need to win the Stanley Cup that’s your goal that’s it and the fact that you’re just going to settle on people that help you make the playoffs every year like big deal anyways so enough about that uh I always just find it funny when I see the news related to dubis so he was bringing somebody back in that uh used to work with him uh vice president of player personnel and so it’s just I mean maybe I’m unfairly anti-is but I just think he’s he did so poorly in Toronto he’s already off to in my opinion not a good start in Pittsburgh and it’s just funny everything that I see him do I’m always like yeah he’s gonna he’s gonna fail sorry D Miss I mean no offense um the worst thing would be imagine if I be K with GM and then I have to go and like try to interact with them and pull off trades again it’s nothing personal I just don’t think you’ve done well uh so anyways but I I very much doubt that that’s I don’t think I’m going to be a GM well I mean it would be cool but I doubt it um okay so this is the one piece of news partially causing me to be later um now I don’t have the same resources as I used to so um cap friendly it’s no longer publicly available which sucks it makes me want to launch a similar website because the current resources are not very good [Music] um but yeah like I mean the undertaking of this would just be so significant and I’d have to have people working for me and I just don’t know if I feel like doing something like that so we’re going to be dealing with you know bad sources or not as great of sources moving forward with this Channel and just you know hockey fans in general so uh just kind of sucks because cat friendly did a good job it’s going to make it more difficult for me to do a large number of the things that I was doing with this channel like posting contract signings now the structure of the new site that I have here isn’t good I don’t even know I might have to stop doing it because this stuff is so bad until I find a better resource I don’t know it kind of sucks so yeah so on that note yeah coming up you’ll see we don’t have the best uh structure for the rest uh so this was a potential and then now it looks like it’s uh actually official so um the what’s his name how do you pronounce his name Alex meruelo or mer merello muu I don’t know anyways um so he’s relinquishing his rights to the franchise which sounds like um hockey is not going back to Arizona and CH board the it’s not something the NHL is focused on so it doesn’t sound like Arizona is going to get a team anytime soon um who knows what’s going to happen but I mean it failed their well it was only once but I mean there were so many issues the entire time and the franchise was never any good so I mean it’s like it’s one of I just hope they don’t go back just like I hope they don’t go back to Atlanta so anyways uh that’s enough about that okay so now basically the big news that took place since my last stream is free agency opening up and all the trades so there’s just a whole bunch the um criteria Criterion I guess in this case that matters to me is Cap hit and so 5 million is or more is really the only type of contracts that I find significant um so I all only really talk about those and then there’s going to be some good value ones that are going to be mixed in now it used to be in a spreadsheet with cap friendly which made it so much easier to navigate plus you could filter here you can’t do either of those puckpedia looks like it’s the best resource um to replace cap friendly at this point and I really hope they add features that c friendly had but the fact that they don’t have it already would tell me that they’re kind of way behind there’s probably tons that they would have to change so anyways um because as it stands I could copy this website and do just as good so anyways um I guess let’s go back to the 208th I think it was okay that’s not it too far okay that’s pretty close actually it’s right on okay so um I’ve got 11 pages to skim through and we’ll just if there’s anything that stands out I’ll draw attention to it of course like you know you’ll see as I skim through there’s anybody that you think is interesting but for me I’m looking for guys that previously had massive contracts that are making like league minimum on teams um Sam steel at 1.2 is a great value contract he got good potential Kane at 4 million fantastic one year it’s a good contract dersy now I get to see how good they structure the player profiles does it show his stats it doesn’t even show his stats um like historic stats oh you got to navigate to more it doesn’t just show up that’s stupid um anyways how much is he making six million for 30 to 40 points for me that’s perfectly reasonable um I like the contract actually because that’s what I’ve said before so somebody commented on one of my shorts just about my argument related to makoy making too much money this is a great example of would you rather makoy at whatever he’s making I think it’s towards like 10 million um versus this at six million for me it’s an absolutely no-brainer I would take dery in a heartbeat way better value but what I was anyways what I was going to say is you shouldn’t be spending in my opinion more than about six million for defenseman that’s producing this average you know top defenseman kind of Point productivity which is around you know 30 up to 40ish points you shouldn’t be spending more than that six million and then the only way you start getting above that is if you’re getting into like a mar or a Yosi or um and anybody else who’s producing basically somewhere towards a point per game or three qus or uh something like that points per game otherwise it should be six million or less is like now because of inflation maybe up to 7 million 7.5 is reasonable eight is where the line is drawn for me so less than eight preferably less than eight uh sorry less than seven and a half and then anything because like when I say seven and a half like if it was 7. 6666 whatever like that that’s not that’s close enough um but yeah ballpark under eight is where you should be paying all these higher-end defensemen um don’t sign these stupid long-term contracts unless they’re guaranteed establish defenseman four years is fantastic for a guy that young that’s performed as he has perfect so um yeah to me it’s just uh this is the kind of contract that you need to be signing for defenseman not those stupid contracts where I mean again we’re not factoring in you know defensive capabilities like um net productivity so not just your production but also how much you defend things like that like all the advanced analytics stuff I don’t have access I’m not well I mean there’s some that you’d have access to but basically it’s it’s pretty I would argue pretty obvious when somebody’s getting overpaid and it’s like those lines that I said so under eight if you’re a top defenseman top four probably top two preferably if you’re towards the higher end of that cap hit um otherwise you should be getting down towards you like somewhere around a million two million three million for all the other defenseman million to two and a half maybe for your third liners um and then second liners you know two and a half to five and then five to eight for your top two kind of thing I’m just giving R rough numbers I did a whole series of management strategy for NHL GMS uh I think I called the series building the perfect NHL roster but anyways I explain all this stuff and how to break down cap hits by position and stuff like that so it’s just anyways so this is just to at least establish the criteria in this case for defenseman that tell me if it’s a good contract or not um so I won’t explain this every single time moving forward when I talk about defense but uh just wanted to get that out of the way so great contract there [Music] um how did Kane do with Detroit he was a point per game like that’s pretty and he didn’t do bad when he was with the Rangers so as far as I’m concerned like man that’s a just think about that cap hit and the value of productivity you’re getting back for it outstanding and this is Eiserman once again um now I know it’s under my threshold but the reason I checked is because I was I felt like he was probably still worth or still producing a point per game is and he was and as a result I mean he theoretically would be worth something like six at least million per year I could argue paying him 8 million for like a year or two given his age and all that so anyways just fantastic signing there uh next page I guess we’ll go from top to bottom now nothing standing out so far nothing from that page didn’t he get paid something or am I confusing him with somebody else yeah he was paid far too much and then went back to where he what he should be getting paid um Jack Campbell see like that’s the thing buying him out and then now he’s got but he still gets paid I think a big chunk doesn’t he get paid all I don’t know exactly how it works with biot and but I’m pretty sure they get paid the entire contract but then Eiserman brilliant capitalizes and gets them for league minimum basic if not actually league minimum no risk at all what a brilliant signing uh nothing else casy Des Smith at a million pretty good three years I like that he’s worth it as a backup to ainger so I like that one a lot I mean there’s like so there’s other guys like kinan I think is a great backup signing for a million I won’t talk about all of them Murray Matt Murray for only like towards the league minimum for one year fantastic but the fact that he was under some stupid contract before just crazy oh one thing just as a note so it’s kind of funny a lot of these teams are actually starting to implement things that I mentioned before having three goalies deep um Winnipeg has cir as their third goalie it looks like behind kakenan um I’m sure if I looked through more teams would have done the exact same thing so for example Detroit I’m pretty sure Campbell is meant to be their third goalie like some of the stuff I talk about it’s funny just how well now I’m seeing some of them actually implementing the same strategies I spoke of obviously I would I would be very surprised if if they got those ideas from me uh because I’m a nobody and nobody knows about me but um yeah anyways it’s just funny I know all these things that I’ve spoken about are either going to be implemented are or are already implemented by some teams you can see it already and so anyways it’s just kind of funny I’m clearly not crazy when it comes to some of my ideas so here’s a great example um Guston he’s getting paid 2 million per he produces uh 31 points last year 42 the previous year 18 and 60 I mean pro rated it’s towards the same productivity uh 12 in 29 it’s 60 points he had way back in 79 so I mean would you rather pay 2 million for Guston well even comparing to dery 2 million for Guston versus dery well you’re going to need to obviously have the like the high-end defensemen that are good at both ends of or both parts of their role so offensively and defensively so if you can get a guy that’s good defensively and produces then obviously he’s a better choice and that’s where you put them up in the lineup but these kind of guys for depth defenseman um so for example they just signed gust ofon but they lost heric in a trade honic I think produced more in this case but um actually let’s see if we can find him 48 points what was he 31 so I mean pretty darn close in previous Seasons they’ve all been relatively close to each other and then now heric just got signed for 7.25 and so he was previously getting underpaid or paid well given his productivity and then um now he’s getting paid what he probably would have gotten in the free market um open market whatever anyways uh he’s getting paid what the market says he should be getting paid and then um you could still find those guys though at like two million like I just uh showed you with um Guston so anyways it’s just kind of crazy the variance in contracts in particular with defenseman where you can like the value is just dramatically uh different and if you just make smart contracts you can really round out a good roster so so anyways I just wanted to draw attention to that samsonov at 1.8 is pretty good is Wedgewood the guy from New Jersey yeah so again low risk 1.5 I like that as a backup um I mean obviously so like I said there’s a lot of decent contracts kind of built or uh mixed in here I can’t go over all them but Jacob Middleton defenseman 25 points what did excuse me so he’s going to be making 4.35 see yeah look like he’s produced basically nothing 14 points 15 points and you’re paying him four point whatever you either have to be perfect defensively or that’s a bad contract Brendan Dylan same thing four million I don’t think I could justify paying that whereas you pay arvidson a forward producing 59 points and 77 15 and 18 49 and 66 I would much rather spend that money on him it’s anyways I think Martinez is one of those cases where 4 million’s fair or used to be because I know he used to produce 18 16 so as of late not as good so maybe in this case actually and how old is he 36 so yeah it is a bad contract in this case so again he would be need he you would need to pay him down I mean it’s only one year so that that’s actually not as bad because the term’s not crazy but and because they have so much cap space in Chicago um because they’re rebuilding but you know he should be somewhere around like a three million maybe so two million sometimes you have to overpay just because of past performance where they they say hey look I’ve done this before and then because they could theoretically produce about the same uh pan at 4 million like he often is one of the best value contracts out there um mind you he’s getting old now so I don’t know if necessarily but yeah like 55 points consistently 20 goals consistently at 4 million like killer value um Brody seems like a good contract usually he produces at least historically decent numbers 30 some OD points now a bit under 25 3.75 perfectly happy with that so that’s where like I mean you can again spend a little bit more here and there spend under here and there as long as it averages out to those numbers I was saying before and you can kind of see it in practice so if you again it’s just a video game but if you went and looked at my franchise mode series um plural Series so the previous one as well as this one you’d see what I mean so like sometimes you overpay sometimes you underpay as long as it Nets out to where you get the right number of players and the best performance you can get for the cap hit and again you can’t always get it right because like for example if you don’t have the assets to trade for what you would like to get which might be a better value contract so like you might have to overpay 2 million on one player um because you don’t have the assets to go and trade for a guy that’s 2 million less um sometimes you’re just stuck with what you get but it’s all the pieces together that matters the most and and as long as you’re progressing up where you’re not continually taking bad contracts you eliminate all your bad you keep eliminating bad contracts and replacing with better contracts and then keep doing that incrementally over time and you’re always going to like obviously you’re going to turn into some Powerhouse team sometimes you’ll have like where people retire or entry level guys start to ask for money and then you know you have to balance all that as it all happens but um yeah anyways Theon Bruce for 3.3 I don’t really he’s not worth that I mean he’s been good but he’s only been good as a backup so um duclair at 3.5 I’m pretty sure is a great contract because he can be up to a point per game he’s inconsistent but he has really big upsid so 58 points with 31 goals in 74 that’s an example there so I mean that cap hit he gets moved around a lot so I don’t know if he’s I think I’ve said this before about him I don’t know if he’s a troubl player to have around but maybe I the fact that he’s been moved around is kind of irrelevant maybe he’s it’s just how it works with contracts and negotiations but CU didn’t he like represent himself at some point then I don’t know anyways long story short good contract go gos this Fe always gets underpaid 56 points in 81 gains at 3.2 in Carolina that is just so Stellar he always gets underpaid just such a good contract there and see that’s where I mean is like you maybe overpay with some guy maybe pay him four million like Martinez because of history and then underpay on it with a guy like this that’s going to Just Produce double almost triple the points of the other guy at 4 million As Long as You Again mix it together and everything’s good from all the mix of players and perfect uh duchan I won’t look at his stats but he’s been a point per game before three million’s fantastic Skinner at three million’s great henrique at three million I don’t think he’s ah maybe that’s okay grizli at 2.75 I’m pretty sure he decent talet at 2.5 that’s pretty good gensel at nine he’s one of the rare cases where I actually can justify paying towards the high end of contracts because while I mean past couple Seasons not as good as previously but 40 goals a season previously and he produces in the playoffs um of all people you’re going to pay that kind of amount he’s one of those guys that are deserving less would be better same with Reinhardt um because Reinhardt only recently started to produce as he has so 57 goals but historically 20 to 30 so I think he’s decent to way of all people if you’re going to do it with like he would be in the range of doing it but eight years I don’t know if I like it at that cap hit I mean Gil’s got higher upside I think for goal scoring so I would seven years at 9 million I’m okay with that Reinhard I would have wanted like if you’re going to do longterm seven in a big so maybe 7 and a half million dollar less or if you’re going to pay him this much then maybe 3 years so I don’t like the contract that much see Stam Co is a great ex so that’s a great contract in my opinion puts him to 38 which is a bit old but he’s consistently produced his goals so 30 to 40 goal scor more consistent than gensel it’s just the problem is is age you can’t know when he’s going to taper off his performance um especially if he wants term like four years so in my opinion I think it’s it’s the right mix for Stam Coast not long um and not too expensive he’s totally worth that that’s a great contract lindol see like this is what I mean overpaying for oh wait no I was confusing with um defenseman never mind so uh I actually do think this is a good contract give me a sec so he was 44 in 75 historically he’s got n but he’s not that consistent he’s only had that one good year of 42 and 40 7.75 for seven years brings him to 36 so because of his upside I’m kind of okay with this it’s not an overpay 7 million is maybe more ideal but I’m okay with the contract I think it’s pretty good so yeah see it’s like it’s the the contrast with the stam Coast one is it’s got he’s got more upside he’s younger locking him up that long at that cap hit is perfectly reasonable that’s why you don’t do those kind of things like they did with Skinner I forget how much he was getting paid per year but um you can’t pay towards the high end for long term with guys that are uncertain he’s uncertain I would argue with lyol but it’s not so high of a cap hit that you could ride out the rest of the contract as they should have done with some of those buyouts but um but yeah just with an uncertain guy seven years I just don’t know if I like it still five years preferably four or less so I don’t I don’t really like it but it’s not the end of the world it’s a decent enough contract for a centerman that’s hard to find decent performance per in guy it’s not the worst contract but uh Soros as a goalie getting paid that much he’s one of the best performing goalies in the past while so maybe if you’re going to do with anybody then do it with him but no way eight years how old is he 29 so you’re locking up all his decent years just I would never spend that much on a goalie I don’t like it at all only guy I would do that with is um uh vasileski uh gorv in New York there’s only like two or three guys huk you can’t spend that much on a on a goalie unless he’s extremely consistent and I wouldn’t say that Saros is at that tier you have to be like the top three goalies in the league to get a long-term high paid contract the rest no way um that’s where I would just go with like I said three three goalie tandem pay him a million to two million a piece between all that you got a great starter I think you’re fine um slavkovsky I don’t think he’s played more than one full season yeah you’re going to start paying him 7.6 for eight years maybe he’s going to be worth it if you’re going to do it with anybody he’s kind of you know the pedigree type of guy you should do it but I don’t know mour at 7.1 no chance no chance I mean he had okay so he had 73 points in 80 games the previous season fantastic but and it I mean other recent Seasons all good but like he’s not A7 million defenseman he’s like a six I mean I guess maybe the seven but the seven years is just stupid so it’s all about that combination of term and cap H I don’t like that combination Brady pretty sure is the same story but probably even worse yeah he hasn’t even hit the higher end stuff like uh Montour he’s already old enough as it is where yeah that’s no good so in my opinion A lot of these contracts are going to come back to bite Nashville I don’t they might be competitive but towards like the older years of these players like look slaven for 6.46 that is fantastic he produces he’s fantastic defensively 30 to 40 points is per season and he’s like one of the well he was the best defenseman uh no sorry not the best defenseman the best so he got the lady Bing but like anyways he’s one of the best defensemen and 6.4 whereas all these rest of these guys you’re spending 7 million whatever stupid contracts that’s a fantastic contract the rest are garbage in comparison still within range and still you know market value but toi at six he’s been very inconsistent I just real realize I got to go I’m already over time by 12 minutes he’s got good upside but he’s old enough as it is work brings him to 36 I mean it’s not the worst contract but not that great sharangovich 99.7 or sorry 5.75 oh he had 59 points 26 um not bad not good Mt Roy I don’t think he’s deserving a 5.75 no four million maybe rzi at 5.5 is okay I know he had a not as good of a season last but 20 goals I mean I’m perfectly okay with that contract because it’s not long term if it was longterm then I would say it’s no good but shorter term man I don’t have enough time to go through all the rest of these contracts and all the trades um what am i g to do then uh guess I’m gonna have to try peshy for defenseman 5.5 producing as much as he did no way ah he’s got better historic stuff so if he goes back to average then that’s okay but still six years I don’t know Maro 5.5 I’m pretty sure that’s a good contract yeah for 60 some odd points a season up to a point per game 20 some odd goals up to 40 some odd goals that’s a great contract how old is he 33 five years terms a bit long but otherwise a good contract but again this is where like Nashville it’s going to come back to bite them I think because they have the things going up to like 38 years old to Bros get 5.5 I think he’s had maybe a couple good Seasons don’t like that one terrain I think has been good enough 60 is to 70 points 5.4 I like that contract a lot zorov a defenseman five million I think he produces enough to get that much 20 some odd points should be more towards like three million these are all just like gut uh instincts on contract dollar amounts five million I’m pretty sure it’s more towards three for Zucker yeah definitely towards three don’t like it wiberg only two years Oh I thought he was younger never mind how much is he getting paid 5 million for 30 some on points stupid contract I know they have cap space but still see Atkinson towards the league minimum for what he can produce could be 50 60 points brilliant signing for Tampa to round out their roster love that Schmidt low cost much better than the previous contract so no brainer there maybe I will have enough time um yeah because I think all the big bulky contracts are all signed by now and then the trades are going to be where I might not have enough time but headman he’s getting old he’s one of those guys that so sorry I guess he’s in the category of where you’d pay you know 8 million-ish like I was saying with Ma and uh uh Mari Yosi and all that kind of stuff because he he can be towards a point per game he’s not always consistently there still you know relatively close but he’s old now eight years bring him brings him to 40 oh wait no because it’s 4 years right yeah four years brings him to 37 at 8 million for him I think he’ll be able to keep up the performance where that’s going to be okay maybe one year too long or if you’re going to do that long maybe towards like seven and a half or maybe a bit less but it’s like if you’re ever going to pay it for a defenseman that’s a good example of where it’s okay bunevich for 8 million I don’t know if he produces that high yeah actually yeah so I stand corrected 8 million6 years brings him to 35 um bit on the high end it’s close seven and a half maybe preferably but 8 million’s fine I’m okay with that six years if it was a little bit long if it was longer than 8 million then it’s a bad contract but terms okay um Rhymer at a million that’s killer value that’s what I mean is get a few rhymers as your three goalies and you’re in way better shape than uh spending more on other guys anything else lendell at five I don’t think he’s produced enough offensively to deserve that no I don’t 5 million too much unless they really think he’s got good upside and I don’t think he’s that good of upside I would have done like a shortterm kind of bridgy contract maybe two years that three million and then maybe give him something like that if he proves himself but teras anko I’m pretty sure this is a Killer Contract he’s getting a bit old 23 goals still in 76 games 4.75 two years that’s a great contract in my opinion Eiserman once again getting these guys at killer cap hits nothing else there got 10 minutes left that I can use don’t think there’s any other suor at near league minimum or league minimum that’s a fantastic contract [Music] um bfist one of those guys like I said take a chance on awesome job that’s it so I think I do have enough time there’s um bunch of Trades uh from the 28th but I think most of those are pick trades teex for pigs nothing significant there sergachev trade [Music] um for JJ Moser geeki second and 7th so clearly Tampa was trying to clear cap space and what he was making for his performance I was going to say was too high uh but basically it looks like it’s like the contrast of paying headman or paying him and and would you pay H headman I’d say yes so I think they’re kind of getting out of of a contract so he’s not in that category where that cap hits reasonable um he should have been like a he’s one of those guys that You’ pay like a six and a half kind of thing it’d be okay so overpaid so it’s good to get out of the contract pick up some other assets um I’m okay with that janat they got out of that contract which I don’t think was that great Hayes for second pick oh and a second pick for future considerations I’m okay with that dubis makes an okay move capitals get Logan Thompson for third and a third that’s Fant fantastic because Thompson I think has really good upside that’s it for that and then I only have one page left and just barely enough time nothing significant there Gil for like the third round pick for signing rights definitely fair deal to just get it done and they did get it done so that’s good Riley Smith first second and a fifth it’s fine for me most of these guys aren’t anything too significant so I don’t think fabri was working out in Detroit so they got rid of him um I think it’s more just to clear out cast bace so that basically they did eerin did what I would argue to always try to do is to get rid of the contracts where you’re not getting the performance you need per cap hit and replace them with good contracts whatever you get back in return if you’re getting guys from free agency is fine so here getting a fourth and I think it was just a depth guy is fine this Oilers trade for seavoy I think is super good they got rid of McLoud and to Leo and neither of those guys are all that high on upside but seavo has got so much upside I think it’s such a fantastic trade for uh Edmonton in the in terms of potential in the long run so really like that trade uh and that finally covers it um and just barely in time I don’t really I still have a lot of stuff to do in five minutes but uh anyways uh so that’s where we’ll leave it sorry if I rush through some of the stuff but I think I covered things well enough you know my justification so for cap hits so you could if you want to look at it more I think most of my instincts would have been pretty accurate so anyways but sorry to rush I guess got delayed in starting the stream so but anyways so that’s it that’s where we’ll leave it if you like the stream hit the like button share with your friends
