Why Houston Rockets Are NOT Trading Alperen Sengun To The New York Knicks + Summer League Preview

on today’s show a completely bogus alperin shenon trade rumor plus what does a successful summer league look like for the Houston Rockets keys for Reed Shepard cam Whitmore and AJ Griffin plus a new Toyota Center jumbotron on the way it’s all coming up on today’s locked on Rockets this is Mission Control Houston ignition sequence start 6 5 4 3 2 1 Houston Rockets basketball is back baby as we get locked on Rockets be sure to like comment and subscribe that’s the best way that you can help our show out is to go comment anything below the YouTube video swing by do a driveby say go Rockets or just come say don’t trade Alper and shingu to the Knicks because it’s stupid and as always thank you so much for making lockdown Rockets part of your day every single day whether it’s on your way to work on your lunch break in the gym thank you for being an everyday so we’re going to get into some summer league stuff as we are set to tip off Las Vegas summer league officially the rocket get set to take on uh bronny James and the LA Lakers summer league Squad Dalton connect also in there even though that he’s probably not going to be featured anywhere near as much on the promo material as as bronny James is throughout his uh summer league debut uh we’re going to get into that kind of what to expect out of the matchup what to expect just from summer league in general um and some keys for you know Reed Shepard cam Whitmore AJ Griffin what does what does a successful summer league look like for those guys and for the Rockets collectively as a group but first things first we got to deal with some stuff here in segment one and that stuff is a tweet by Mark Burman of the New York Post that ruffled some Rockets feathers if you will so let me read this verbatim uh Mark Burman who covers the New York Knicks said uh Leon Rose was in the first row of the presser yesterday with M’s mother so male Bridge’s mother didn’t talk but he’s still cooking wants to make big Center move after Phillies to additions heard Houston shingon has been on radar even Detroit’s Jaylen Duren and that was before Pistons signed Paul Reed in tweet so first things first um yeah if you’re the Knicks of course you would you would love to add shingon it’s especially after you just lost Isaiah hartenstein um I myself I would love to wake up tomorrow morning and have a McLaren sitting in the parking spot where my Hyundai is currently sitting and that’s just as unlikely as the Rockets trading shingun to the Knicks like I’m so sorry I don’t even know it I don’t even know where to go with this because like shingon on the Knicks radar cool shingon is on all 28 other teams in the association beside the Knicks he’s on their radar too because he’s one of the best most promising talented young players in the association that just averaged a cool 219 and five on insane efficiency and is one of the best young bigs in today’s game all 29 other teams would love to get their hands on shingon so this report if I can call it that is not really based in reality um because you look up and down the Knicks roster and there isn’t a single thing a single player that the Knicks have uh that I would trade Alper and shenon for it just that none of it would make sense it is a ridiculous proposition to even consider um I I really don’t know where else to go with this other than like I saw a lot of rockets fans getting you know very disgruntled over this this report from him and then and then suddenly worrying about oh well is the organization going to going to suddenly trade Shing I can confidently say right here that sh shingun is not going anywhere it’s not it’s not going to happen not to the Knicks at least not in a deal like this now you know if a superstar if one of the like top 10 players in the NBA becomes available somewhere down the line then I think realistically Rafel Stone in the Rockets front office would consider trading anybody on this roster I I I still don’t believe that there is a single Untouchable player on this Rockets roster anybody could be had for the right price for the right return but there isn’t anything the Knicks have and the delusion I’m so sorry the delusion in some of these comments uh I one of the the top replies to to burman’s tweet was I guess I’m guessing a Knicks fan saying Randle two protected firsts two pick swaps for shingun and Dylan Brooks like what and then and then the follow-up logic Houston only trade shingon if it’s for Randall and the money wouldn’t work for them unless Brooks is involved in what world is shenon for Julius Randall a fair return Yeah couple first couple pick swaps shenon can get you so much more than that like I’m just I’m playing Devil’s adequate now but like in a hypothetical trade situation in a hypothetical if the Rockets were considering moving on from shingun he is the type of like Cornerstone franchise talent that Nets you an established Superstar right he’s the kind of like Prospect or trade bait whatever you want to call it that should net you an established all-nba caliber presence from a team that is you know imploding falling apart whatever star Demands a trade that’s the kind of player shingun gets you he doesn’t get you a Julius Randall who is coming off of an injury you know a you know an injury ruin season and some future draft Capital that’s again I I could spend a lot of time sitting here talking about why this is stupid and why it makes absolutely no sense and that the Knicks are just saying saying stuff just to say stuff I guess um but it I don’t even think it’s worth the oxygen and I’m batting my microphone around over here if you’re watching on YouTube uh so I I figured I would address it because it did come from a uh a legitimate reporter somebody who who covers the Knicks somebody who’s close to the Knicks uh a Knicks Insider if you will but I don’t think that this is based in any level of reality for what the Rockets themselves would consider uh a big part of their future right shingun is obviously a big part of the Houston Rockets future and I know there’s been some you know frustrations around the lack of an extension the lack of clarity around his future jaylen’s future all that stuff uh you know but he I feel confident in saying he’s not going anywhere not this offseason and most certainly not to the New York Knicks so I figured I would address that here at the top of the show before we get into our fun stuff as we’re getting ready to take on uh Las Vegas summer league with the Houston Rockets what does a successful summer league look like for your Houston Rock Pock ETS some keys for Reed Shepard cam Whitmore AJ Griffin few other news and notes that we’re going to get to in the rest of today’s show but we’re going to home for everything Houston Rockets basketball all right so let’s go ahead and kind of set the table here for Las Vegas summer league but what does first off what does a successful summer league look like for the Houston Rockets well it it’s worth remembering that last year during summer league uh the Rockets wound up going five- one uh they had a chance to win the Summer League Championship uh against the the Cleveland Cavaliers ultimately they did not win uh now that team was coached by uh assistant coach or or lead assistant Ben Sullivan this year Rocket summer league Squad is going to be coached by Garrett Jackson so Oka entrusting one of his youngest assistants on the staff with the task of running the summer league Squad uh it’ll be interesting to see how involved all the other assistant coaches are how involved eay himself is with the summer league Squad we know that the Rockets have already you know eay on record and and whatnot they’ve already alluded to the ability to do some similar things with Reed Shepard as they currently do with Fred vanet so that’s going to be one of the first things that I’m looking forward to in summer league is just seeing how the coaching staff decides to use Reed Shepard um and just kind of how comfortable he looks in this role right you know how much I guess how much leeway is he given when it comes to running the offense right how much of it is going to be designed sets how much of it is going to be simple actions how much of it is going to be Reed Shepard just kind of out there doing his thing and creating for teammates or are we going to see a lot of you know cam Whitmore breaking down the defense uh AJ Griffin has you know some ability and wants to be able to kind of showcase his talents and maybe he tries to step outside of his comfort zone and do a little bit more but for me I think a successful summer league for the Rockets would be one where you walk away and you feel confident that Reed Shepard was the right pick now I I already feel that way but to draw some comparisons to say last summer league right amen Thompson and cam Whitmer absolutely crushed it like amen he only played the one game and and obviously got shut down due to the ankle injury it was really disappointing but in that one game we saw so much from Amin Thompson we saw flashes we saw so much of everything that he could be and I think that’s really what you want to see at Summer League there’s going to be mistakes there’s going to be problems it’s not going to be perfect and the rockets are not going to step out and be like this Juggernaut at Las Vegas summer league uh despite what I don’t know you know what they might actually be because they’ve got look they’ve got the reigning summer league champ or Summer League MVP on their roster and cam Whitmore now it’s going to be very similar as far as like expectations right cam is likely to play two games maybe three tops I think he’ll probably play two and then get shut down just like last year where Jabari and tari both played a couple games and then they got shut down the goal is just let cam Whitmore go out there let him go to work let him prove that he’s the best player on the floor see how much he’s grown from the end of the NBA season until now and I think it’s also about giving giving Reed Shepard some weapons right I think last year the goal was you had a Min Thompson out there and you just drafted this guy who’s supposed to be potentially your point guard of the future this elite floor general you know Court Vision all that you wanted to give the guy some weapons to work with in summer league rather than the usual rag tag group of you know exhibit 10 guys and whatnot who maybe can’t even shoot the basketball all that stuff right you wanted to give him some guys actually dish it to to see his passing on display I think that’s a little bit the goal here with Reed Shepard as well is the Rockets are likely going to entrust Reed Shepard with running a lot of if not all of the Rockets offense in summer league so you want to make sure that he has the right weapons around him so that you can really get a feel for how he looks when he’s running the offense right I do think that looking back on some of his film uh at Kentucky is I’m I’m very curious to see how he’s going to look when he’s pressured by legit NBA siiz Defenders um there were definitely some moments uh in college where you could tell like he’s he’s perfectly comfortable with the ball he’s polished he makes good quality reads but there’s also times where you know bigger stronger faster Defenders can pressure him a little bit maybe take him out of his comfort zone and so I’m just curious to see how he reacts to that at summerly because it’s not like summer league isn’t even the real NBA yet it’s definitely a step up in the level of competition and you’ve also got guys who are going to be vying for NBA contracts and trying to carve out a place for them themselves in the NB in the league and because of that you’re going to have guys playing at 110% effort at all times that they’re on the court in summerly because this is their chance to carve out a spot on NBA roster to put themselves on the radar of a team that might want to pick them up even you know bringing them in on two-way deal or something like that so how does Reed kind of respond to all of that does he look like the polished calm you know maintaining Poise presence everything that we would want out of a lead guard or does he get a little frazzled right does he look uncomfortable at times does the defense pressure him is he able to still create is he able to generate his own offense or offense for his teammates that’s going to be the number one thing right is does Reed Shepard look like the number three overall pick after even a couple games at Summer League um I do think that outside of that outside of you know Reed Shepard just stepping in and trying to do his thing I want to see what I want to see what the Rockets actually run defensively like it’s going to be really interesting they’ve they’re going to have I I more or less the expectation right for the starting lineup obviously you’re going to have Reed Shepard out there you’re going to have uh cam Whitmore and you’re going to have AJ Griffin those three are absolute locks for the rocket starting lineup I think it’s a pretty solid bet that you’re going to have neali Dante starting at the center position and then that fifth spot I would say most likely goes to Nate Williams probably he’s the the guy that the Rockets uh first signed to a fresh two-way deal uh this season an internally the Rockets really like Nate Williams um he’s just he’s a hard worker he gets after it in practice’s a good versatile Defender uh gives a gives a ton of effort at all times makes the hustle plays uh you know the issue with Nate is he’s just he he’s gotten better as an outside shooter especially throughout the course of last season I don’t know if he’ll ever carve out like a permanent NBA roster spot until unless he can really get that three ball down but I think that’s your likely starting lineup is Shepard Williams Griffin uh Cam and then neali Dante at the center position so how do those how does that starting lineup look on the defensive end right because the rocket the Rockets actually just signed I should have uh buried the lead on this one a little bit the Rockets actually just signed neali Dante to a two-way contract I kind of thought that they would wait until after summer league before committing any more you know committing any other players to the other two-way slots that they have because you have up to three two-way slots on the roster they gave the first one to Nate Williams again they really like Nate Williams uh I kind of thought that they would wait until after summer league to kind of evaluate the different guys on the roster and then decide okay this is who we like for a two-way slot whatever but no they’re they’re already really high on Dante apparently and decided to hand him the two-way before he even stepped foot in Las Vegas so that’s that speaks volumes about what they feel about him and what he could potentially bring to this team so how does this squad look defensively on the floor right are they going to keep their coverage is relatively simple I imagine they’ll probably switch a lot of things one through four maybe even one through five cuz D can get out there on the perimeter a little bit move his feet he’s not you know a lumbering big man a drop big or anything uh so just kind of seeing what he can bring to the table because again he does give the Rockets a slightly different look at that Center position than they have with anybody else on the roster um and I mentioned this the other day uh talking about you know going through some of our mailbag questions and whatnot but for AJ Griffin uh it’s still kind of like the The Curious Case of AJ Griffin I guess is is what we can call it because coming into the NBA right he projected to be a really great three and D wing and I still think there’s that like I still think that’s there and very capable for him to achieve I just wonder you know how much of what he went through the off the court stuff how much of it is mental how much of it is you know can can he work past all that and what is what does he ultimately look like on the court right obviously he didn’t things really didn’t work out once Quinn Snyder took over in Atlanta hopefully em Oda and this rocket coaching staff is more you know the you know suited to his play style or or the Rockets the way that the Rockets like to play is is better suited for what he can bring to the table um although I I still struggle to imagine why AJ Griffin couldn’t succeed in Atlanta which again raises you know it raises some eyebrows it makes me think well he if he couldn’t make it work there Quinn’s a good coach so you know what are the expectations I’m trying to keep expectations kind of low I guess for AJ Griffin because if he works out amazing great get for the Rockets got him for basically nothing uh you know a mid-tier second round pick and if you could turn that into a serviceable 3 andd role player a guy who’s shooting you know something like 37 38% from downtown that would be a huge pickup but at at this point I’m not even I’m not even trying to expect that I just want to see that he can come out play play solid above it above average defense and just knock down his open shots right I don’t need to see him create off the dribble I don’t need to see him breaking down defenses I don’t need to see him doing anything extra other than just what he would reasonably do within the confines of the Rockets offense at the NBA level not at the summer league level I don’t need to see him try to be the man in summer league just go out there prove that you still belong on an NBA roster prove that you still have it showcase you can do and hopefully it leads to something more material down the line where the Rockets actually think they have something in this guy rather than just you know oh he he’s not going to work out down the line um I also as far as AJ Griffin I don’t know how to like I don’t know if he’s gonna play all of Summer League I don’t know if he’d be on the same like limited run as cam Whitmore he might be a guy that probably gets more games under his belt just so that the Rockets can get a really good look at him since he hasn’t played in so long uh versus a guy like cam where the Rockets Rockets already know what they have in can’t Whit more so with that want to talk a little bit about what to expect on the other side of things uh with the LA Lakers the first team that the Rockets are going to be matched up against in summer league as well as uh key you guys in on what to expect as far as content while I’m in Las Vegas expectations for how we’re going to handle media and interviews and all that stuff as well as the new Jumbotron waiting for fans inside Toyota Center we’re going to get there in just one moment and final segment here at locked on Rockets your daily podcast home for everything Houston Rockets basketball all right so on the other side of things for the LA Lakers here’s my best guess as to their starting lineup we know that dton connect is going to start we know that bronny James is going to start those are the two like guaranteed names I’d say Castleton will probably start at their Five Spot um and then Maxwell Lewis and sha East probably rounding out the rest of the roster um look we already know that this game is going to be gassed up like crazy because of bronny James um and all the spotlight is going to be on what bronnie James does or does not do on the basketball court and in a way I’m actually it it’s twofold I’m I’m frustrated because I feel like I’m I’m going to be in the stadium watching the game right I can almost guarantee on the broadcast for the game it’s going to be all about bronny James it’s going to be all about him and his relationship with his father and what it means to the Lakers and all this and it’s going to be one of those really painful narratives that just drags on all throughout Summer League don’t get me wrong it’s a cool thing I’m glad that Brony James made it to the NBA I’m glad that he’s the first fatherson duo with LeBron it’s it’s cool it’s already a very tired storyline and all the TV stations and and you know National channels and the stuff they’re going to beat that thing to death and we’re going to be exhausted by it I can already guarantee you if you’re watching the game on TV you’re going to be exhausted by whatever they’re saying about Brony James by like the second quarter with that though uh the positive so that’s the ne that’s the downside of facing the Lakers and bronnie James here in game one the upside is if the Rockets embarrass the hell out of them it’s going to be really cool because obviously a lot of eyes are going to be tuned in on this game because of bronny James uh and it’s a great opportunity for Reed Shepard to Showcase who he is as a player right and and put his put himself on everybody else’s radar right make a name for himself with all eyes on him all eyes on the rockets and Lakers in this first Summer League game and just go out there and and play your game right be you and and impress everybody right there’s going to be a lot of pressure on this game because it’s it’s not like there’s Stakes or anything it’s not a playoff game but just knowing that the audience is going to be a lot bigger probably than a traditional Summer League game very similar to last year right with Summer League games featuring wimy where like all of France was tuning in and Thomas and Max Center was just absolutely packed to the brim all the like there were people sitting in the upper section of the seats in in Thomas and maxer last year because of wimy now I don’t I’m not saying that brownie James has the same draw as the generational talent that is Victor wom Yama but I’m saying similar principles kind of apply um and then I there’s not a lot to be taken away from like the coaching aspect I know I mentioned early on right Garrett Jackson will be coaching the summer league roster uh instead of Ben solivan this go around I think that’s just interesting from the perspective of eem kind of trusting you know a different voice on his coaching staff to step up and and handle the summer league responsibilities um maybe maybe it’s just as simple as Ben suin didn’t want to do it again and he like pulled Rank and he was like I’m the senior I don’t want to deal with Summer League make Garrett Do It um that said it is cool to see him kind of trusting one of one of the younger coaches on his staff to go in handle summer league and then on the Lakers side of things we don’t know what to expect right with uh with JJ reck and his coaching staff that’s been cobbled together in the last like I don’t know week and a half two weeks uh so I have no idea what to expect out of what the Lakers are going to try and do out there on the floor but uh I think it’s going to be a Rockets win by a landslide honestly when you look up and down the rosters as far as just the talent on both sides uh I think the Rockets should have this thing in the back I think it’s going to be a blowout by the fourth quarter honestly that’s my that’s my very confident comfortable prediction here in the show is we’re going to see a Rockets blowout by the fourth quarter guaranteed I think cam Whitmore goes for an easy 20 plus I think defal Dante picks up at least 10 rebounds AJ Griffin hits two threes Reed Shepard hits three threes and has four dimes that’s going to those are those are some of my official predictions for game one and I’m going to I cannot wait to Circle back and see how wrong or how right I was on those few points but uh what did I want to tag in here I had something else in my notes that I wanted to oh here I sorry I wanted to get to this one thing so the Rockets are slated for four games in summer league they start off against the Lakers then they take on the Wizards they’ve got the Pistons and then the Timberwolves so those are the four games on the schedule currently they will play a fifth game on either July 20th or July 21st so again they take on the Lakers Friday July 12th Sunday the 14th the Rockets take on the Wizards then Monday the 15th so they play a back toback Monday the 15th they play the Pistons and then Thursday the 18th they play the Timberwolves uh and again they’ll get a fifth game on either the 20th Saturday the 20th or Sunday the 21st a little bit later and then potentially a sixth game if they make it to the championship round of the games that the Rockets are currently slated for I think that I’m honestly most excited for the Pistons game of all of them uh um even though cam Whitmore might not be playing by the time the Pistons game rolls around because that’ll be the third game of Summer League there’s something about the Rockets Pistons rivalry that just runs really deep now that there’s something about when those two teams meet up it’s just I feel like fireworks kind of start going off and I would love for the Rockets to be able to show up the Pistons at summer league and uh have Reed Shepard just out there dog walking guys but at the end of the day that’s the game that I’m most excited for I’m curious to know your thoughts which of the four games on the schedule right now you are most excited to see it might just be the Lakers game right first one out of the gate uh obviously it’s really exciting getting summer league underway so maybe that’s your most excited the one that you are most excited for um and I am I am interested to see who they’re going to ultimately pair the Rockets up with um for that Fifth and final game because they’re not they don’t see they don’t see the Spurs at all because I was like a Stefan Castle Reed Shepard matchup would be awesome they also don’t see the Hawks at all so no Zachary ree there um they will see the Wizards so that’s Alex SAR uh but as far as other top picks uh they’ll I guess they’ll get Ron Holland with the Pistons but I feel like this is the first time where maybe like the Rockets haven’t had multiple games against some of the other top picks in the lottery it’s basically just it’s just Alex SAR and then Ron Holland so the second pick and the fifth pick versus the third pick I feel like historically they’ve done a better job about matching up the top picks against each other in previous summer leagues but maybe that’s just you know my memory betraying me here um anyways which of the games in summer league are you most excited for what are you most looking forward to seeing out of the guys in summer league drop your thoughts in the YouTube comments last thing that I got for you here before we wrap up today’s show uh the Rockets apparently and this is news to me by way of Reddit of all places um shout out to the shout out to r/ Rockets a great place for Rockets information and fandom share your thoughts and opinions over there a lot of great individuals over on r/ Rockets um there’s apparently there is a very blurry photo posted of that and I have since since that photo has emerged I’ve reached out and tried to ask if I can get some uh up you know some maybe legitimate information about the the Toyota Center Renovations and what they’re doing with the Jumbotron but what it looks like is the Rockets are completely updating the Jumbotron and they’re making it one of those fancy jumbotrons that like wraps all the way around and is open in the center so that people who are sitting in the courtside seats or in the lower bowl can look up and actually see the scoreboard and see like the inside of it so it’s like a ring and then there’s like screens on both sides it looks like so love the rockets for doing that love that they’re adding that to Toyota Center they’ve been the fatita family’s been dumping a ton of money into Renovations and all sorts of stuff at TC so to add yet another new piece of fancy brand new jumbo Tron for the start of this next season is going to be really exciting stuff I’m sure we’ll get either a PR release or if I again if I can dig and get a little bit more information on it I will and then obviously I’ll re relay that information here but uh that’s some exciting news for the rockets and then last thing uh just what to expect out of Summer League from a coverage perspective I’ll be there for the first three games that the Rockets play and of course you know we’ll have the postgame interviews with Coach Garrett Jackson and the players and everything post to the YouTube channel um if the Rockets conduct a practice in Las Vegas I’ll try to attend that and kind of see if we can scoop anybody there last year we managed to get Fred vanit and Dylan Brooks at Las Vegas summer league because those Acquisitions happened the signings happened over the summer and there was no official introductory press conference now the Rockets don’t have a major acquisition this off season to unveil to the fans so I I doubt we get any current players or anybody in an official capacity as far as you know getting him in a media scrum or an interview or something but it will be a really cool opportunity to just see how you know like for example how Reed Shepard handles answering questions in a scrum right he he seemed really calm cool and collected very professional during his press conference but how does he handle himself after a big win or a really disappointing loss right does he own up to mistakes that he made or does he brush off the things that he does and so just kind of getting a feel for who he is as a person and answering questions and kind of owning up to the media about whatever happened in the games it’s a cool experience to start like for me right start building those relationships with the players but just kind of understanding their personalities and how they’re going to answer certain questions and all that good stuff so that’s what to expect from Summer League I am curious all your thoughts your feelings what are you expecting out of Summer League what do you want to see out of Summer League 1. As for the front office undervalue Alpy and in love with rim protector like Brooke Lopez , Houstoun will trade Alpy . Alpy and the NYK will be the winner.

  2. Jacskson ,hope you can find a Mc Laren owner who does not know the value of his Mc Laren😊I feel that the front office does not know Alpy 's value.. Rim protector love is so big It is better for Houston to try that way. Everbody will be happy and time will tell who will be the winner

  3. Rockets must keep sengun more consistent he give him max extension trade green need new start new team. This rumors will trade sengun and green due not rockets not offering them extension definitely the agent like them move other team find teams that can pull trade that buzz for clients

  4. Alpi is undoubtedly their best player, their centerpiece,& the 3 best center n the league. I just want them to extend him. He’s better than Cade,Barnes,&Wagner & they already got their extensions.🚀🤘🏾

  5. Tom Thibodeau is all about defense…Sengun wouldn’t fit with the Knicks. Sengun-Stans are just like Jermey Lin fans, they think he’s better than what he actually is.
