Washington Commanders Safety Quan Martin’s Role in Potential Three Safety Scheme Under Joe Whitt Jr.

Washington Commanders Safety Quan Martin’s Role in Potential Three Safety Scheme Under Joe Whitt Jr.

Quan Martin is penciled in as one of the top safeties in Jo Jr’s defense if you turn on the tape he’s going to look a little bit more like the third safety from the Dallas Cowboys defense one year ago that and more on today’s episode of lock on commanders you are locked on commanders your daily podcast on the Washington commanders part of the locked on podcast Network your team every every day and Football League isn’t signed with any team right now probably won’t be signed by the Washington commers before training camp but should definitely be on the short list if disaster strikes knock on W that it doesn’t in training camp all part of our Deep dive into the safety position as we round out our position group series here ahead of training camp but first Quan Martin is going to play the role of the third Cowboy safety from 2023 even if most of us consider him the top safety or the top one of the top two safeties in this defense and it’s a little bit of semantics but if you want to year safety Quan Martin is going to be a key part of this year’s defense but figuring out where he fits is going to require breaking some patterns here just a little bit not just in Joe Junior’s defense history but also in NFL safety history most if not everything we can take from Joey Junior’s Commander defense and what it’s going to look like this year is going to come from his previous stops most specifically and most relevant is going to be his latest stop with the Dallas Cowboys as the defensive pass game coordinator secondary coach wasn’t the defensive coordinator there and he has told us that his defense in Washington is not going to be a copy paste of what they did in Dallas or what he did in Atlanta or Cleveland or Green Bay it’s going to be unique to what the Washington commanders do however Trends and tendencies do tend to follow coaches from time to time so while there are going to be some differences absolutely there are also going to be some similarities and when we look at a safety like Quan Martin while we do expect him to be a big contributor to this defense do expect him to be a starter what’s interesting about the Dallas Cowboys defense under Dan Quinn who was the defensive coordinator before becoming the head coach here and Joe wiid Jr who was his right-hand man there in Dall is they actually had three starting safeties on their roster so when you talk about Joe wit Jr safety you’re not just talking about a free safety a strong safety how do they look no you’re talking about three safeties and how they work in concert together so the Dallas Cowboys actually had four safeties that dominated the snaps among the rest of the group and they listed three safeties as starters regularly at least especially week one of the 2023 NFL season the four safeties that dominated the snapshare Malik hooker had 826 of them that’s 77% jron Kur played 76% Donovan Wilson played 68% mares Bell played 60% now Malik hooker was the free safety jron curse a s a box safety big safety whatever you want to call him big nickel buffalo nickel whatever you want to call him he’s a big safety uh linebacker type of safety and then Donovan Wilson was really interesting because he split time between playing in the box and playing deep as a free safety 41% of his snaps Don Wilson’s that is came in the Box 38% of his snaps came as a free safety and then Maris Bell some of you may be saying Maris Bell as a linebacker PFF lists him as a linebacker because of how much he played in the box but the Dallas Cowboys lift him list him as a safety so for the sake of this conversation we’re going to call him a safety and when you look at the Washington commanders and you look for a size comparison trait you know specific traits comparison Malik hooker the Washington commanders player that kind of fits that mold the closest would actually be Tyler Owens rookie out of Texas Tech this year jron kurur he would most be matched by Jeremy chin the veteran free agent Dominique Hampton another rookie for this year Donovan Wilson would actually be physically matched up with Derrik forest or Jeremy Reeves more often than not Maris Bell the linebacker uh for some and safety for the Cowboys would also be kind of a Tyler Owens uh type of comp so if you take those comps and you try to draw the direct parallels from Joey junr in Dallas to what could happen in Washington your free safety would actually be Tyler Owens which uh that would be a huge leap for for Tyler Owens to go from undrafted free agent out of Texas ATT to being starting free safety in the NFL your strong safety be Jeremy chin Dominique Hampton will be back there and then kind of your combo guys free safety SL strong safety type would be Derek forest and Jeremy Reeves so Quan Martin doesn’t really fit the exact physical mold for any of the Dallas Cowboy safeties that you saw a year ago or even going back into the history of the Dallas Cowboys a couple years you don’t really see a quan Martin clone or Quan Martin physical twin in that system so the question now becomes where does Quan Martin fit in where does Joe junor plan on using Quan Martin and of course Joe’s not going to tell us where he plans on using him so all we can do is kind of draw that for ourselves and for me I’m putting Quan Martin and the Donovan Wilson role if Washington in fact employs three safeties primarily the way that the Dallas Cowboys did it I mean again I mentioned the week one uh dep CH Jo go all the way to week 18 watching the tape of Dallas Cowboys against the Washington commanders they’ve got three safeties they’ve got curse they’ve got Wilson and they’ve got uh Malik hooker out there for the majority of the game if not the entirety of the game so expects expecting three safeties to be used by Joey Jr certainly rooted in some logic of course doesn’t guarantee he’ll he’ll actually do it and then of course comes into a conversation of the depth chart and what type of weapons he has right so more to follow on all that but I would put Quan Martin in that Donovan Wilson role even though when we talk about Donovan Wilson and kind of how he measures up and what he looks like and all that stuff he doesn’t really Quan is definitely a smaller dude he’s shorter he’s thinner Derek Forest is more like him a little bit stockier Derek is shorter than Quan Martin but a little bit stock a little B more meat to him Jeremy Reeves kind of a little bit a little bit more meat to him as well uh but Quan Martin I think fits the skill set that the Donovan Wilson type of player brings to the Joey junr defense so Donovan Wilson remember who was a guy who spent 40 or so percent of his snaps playing in the Box 30% or so of his snaps playing free safety that’s kind of where I see Quan Martin fitting although I think Quan Martin will be more coverage less box but you get the idea a little bit of a split type player Jeremy chin I think it’s very clearly that jron Cur rolled that big safety that linebacker safety hybrid type of player to play in the Box a lot that’s where jron Kur pretty much lived I think that’s where Jeremy chin is going to basically live and then for the Malik hooker role again Tyler Owens going from undrafted out of Texas Tech to a starting safety in the National Football League would be a huge leap so I’m not going to go as far as to predict that we happened I’m just telling you that the physical traits and the skill set that Tyler Owens brings certainly matches what Malik hooker is able to do honestly kind of matches what Don Wilson is able to do as well but I think you’re probably looking at either Percy Butler Derek Forest I think should be kind of the leader in in in the clubhouse heading into training camp to take that spot Jeremy Reeves also could potentially do that but Percy Butler is the most pure cover safety of those three drik Forest certainly can cover we’ve seen him do it he’s he’s done it a lot and I think he’s not the lead here but I think when you just talk about who’s the most pure free safety remaining on the roster after Quan Martin and Jeremy chin I think Percy Butler and uh and then Tyler Owens fits those categories although Tyler owens’s not exactly a pure free safety either now the fun thing about Tyler Owens uh that we’re I want to talk about real quick is that he played a pretty even split in the boxing in coverage for Texas Tech last year so he’s got experience in both those doesn’t have a lot of experience in football big- time football especially just period right but he has some experience what experience he does have he’s got good experience playing in the box and also playing in coverage and the potential is is what really unlocks some excitement about him for me and what Joe Junior’s defense could do with a player like Ty Tyler Owens as he develops depending on how quickly he develops may not be this year honestly may not even be next year but you know three four years down the line Tyler Owens may be a type of a guy that Joey junr really finds something to do with if Joey Junior’s not a head coach somewhere uh by them but Owens is a project of course and again I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect that he’ll challenge for a starting role uh this season but you can see the traits that fit what wit has done in the past so it’s a developmental Prospect there’s certainly some excitement there and maybe gives you a little bit of something to watch during preseason games when the starters are off the field to kind of get a glimpse into the future and the excitement doesn’t start there how Joe Jr can really use this three safety look to benefit his defense and hurt opponents and even Elevate the players on the field on his side of the ball that’s available to us customers as we continue our look at what the Washington Commander safety group could look like under defense coordinator Joe wit Jr not just the versatility of quan Martin but also the versatility of Joe wit Jr’s scheme and style of play and how he uses this three safety look unlocks a lot of excitement for the Washington commanders defense this season and I thank you for coming through here making locked on commanders your first listen your first View today and every day every dayers thanks for coming through and joining us for this conversation like you join all of the three safeties on the field and again I don’t want to put words into joit Jr’s mouth but just kind of understanding the game of football and looking at what uh everything everybody likes to do the ultimate goal for a defense coordinator and I’ve heard multiple defensive coaches and defensive coordinators say this over the years is that when the offense shifts goes in motion whatever we don’t have to move but sometimes even if you have to move you want to do it in a way that you don’t give anything away and that’s where the three safety look can really come in handy especially when when you have a guy like say Jeremy chin who’s kind of in the middle of that safety triangle right imagine the safeties of on this team forming a triangle Jeremy chin is going to be in the middle of that triangle most likely he’s going to be kind of the bottom point of that triangle in the box somewhere and then it may not be a drastic shift to the right or left but either way you’re gonna have one other free safety SL strong safety type on one side and then you’re gonna have kind of your true free safety on the other side and you have again like this said this this kind of triangle of safety coverage and what’s really cool about that especially if you’ve got a guy like Juan Martin who can play in the box or he can play deep and you got a free safety on one side or a guy like St Dereck Forest who potentially could play in coverage or in the box and you got Jeremy chin who is purely kind of your box safety um but you kind of identify that and you just kind of bracket him with coverage guys let’s say you’re facing an offense they come out in one look you’ve got Quan Martin on the line of scrimmage on one side of Jeremy chin who’s kind of in the middle of the box and then you got Derrik Forest just for argument sakes on the other side who maybe is more you know single high or maybe a little bit deeper off the line of scrimmage and the offense goes in motion when they go in motion Quan Martin drops back Derek Forest comes up to the line of scrimmage basically where Quan Martin was just on the other side of the formation and now you’ve shifted to match the defense you’re probably throwing some hand signals out or saying hey hey hey do this and oy oy or whatever whatever but you really not told the defense or the offense anything as a quarterback that happens I motion my receiver that movement happens I still don’t know if this team is in man I still don’t know if this team is in zone I can make some assumptions but I don’t really know still until I snap the ball but as a defense I’ve now been able to cover and react to that shift and to that motion without giving too much information away now of course you got watch Trends right if we only put Derek Forest on the line of scrimmage when it’s Zone then obviously we’re gonna give it away if we only put Quan Martin on the line of scrimmage when it’s man then obviously we’re gonna give it away right so you want to kind of watch some of those things but it really unlocks a lot of interesting possibilities for this Washington commanders defense and then even moving down the line like I said a guy like Tyler Owens who has some experience very limited experience generally but some experience in the box and also some experience in coverage if you get to the point where you can trust him to be kind of that Lan that that top cover type of guy and all that stuff you can use him again in that type of a flexible motion so it’s really interesting and then even going deeper into Joe W junor scheme last year saw multiple occasions where he used seven defensive backs on the field at one time we actually even saw it early on against the Washington commanders in week 18 of last season uh to me I look at that formation I’ve got a running back in my back field next to my quarterback I’m checking into a run pretty much every single time and the Washington Mayers they decided to pass against it not what I would have done it did work you know give them G them credit for that uh it did work it was a pass I think the pass was completed uh they might have been to Johan Dotson nine yard gain on First and 10 so certainly a successful play um but you know seven DBS on the field is a lot of DBS you know what I mean so so Joe Jr when he talks about rotating these guys through yeah we’re GNA have like three main safeties I think but it doesn’t mean guys like you know Percy Butler Jeremy Reeves even Tyler Owens he makes the active roster aren’t going to get their opportunities to get on the field certainly so as we go through this so that’s kind of a more Joe Wi junor focused look at this safety group and and how I think that you know they might fit into what Joey Jr might want to do again he says it’s going to be different but right now all we really have to go off of is what we can last saw with the Dallas Cowboys so now let’s get into the part of our position group conversations that we’ve been doing all week long and all the last couple weeks offense last week defense this week and that is evaluating these guys in a vacuum evaluating safeties in a vacuum again all Defenders need size they need toughness they need instincts you want that from all these guys typically and this is where the Washington compers are kind of deficient you want your safeties to be around 6 foot one or more ideally free safeties you want them to come in weighing around 205 pounds or more strong safeties you want them weighing about 210 pounds or more I don’t think you want your free safeties get much above like I think like 215 would the ceiling for a free safety for a strong safety think like 225 I think you get past 225 you’re getting a little big even 225 is is pretty big so when you look at the Washington Comm roster that Stacks up right now you’ve actually got four undersized safeties that are all pretty significant names here Quan Martin Percy Butler Derrik Forest Jeremy Rees all guys considered undersized for their safety position right Quan Martin six foot 195 pounds and these are all listed sizes and weights right by the Washington commanders um I know a lot of people talk about well their their weights and their heights are always lied about but even if they’re lying about him they’re lying about him and still saying that they’re under size so I don’t know how much they’re lying about it but Quan Martin 6′ 195 pounds Percy Butler 6 foot 191 pounds defo 511 200 pounds Jeremy Reeves 511 200 pounds and then you got four guys who are now what you would consider adequate size right or prototypical size and they’re all new Jeremy chin 6 foot3 220 pounds for a strong safety that’s a really good size and build Dominique Hampton rookie 6’3 220 pounds Ben nickel 612 110 pounds Tyler Owens 62 23 pounds so you see this front office this coach staff shifting saying we want to bring in safeties that are kind of more of that ideal prototypical size we’re going to keep some guys who are a little bit undersized see what we can do with them and and I think that just kind of shows you the shift in kind of how this team is going to be moving so if you’re one of these undersized guys if you’re Quan Martin Percy Butler Derrik Forest Jeremy Reeves your challenge now is to show this defense show this defensive staff that even though you quote unquote undersized it’s not going to be a problem toughness right we already know Quan Martin one of the toughest dudes go turn on his Illinois tape alone you can see that he he’ll crash the Box he’ll cover with the biggest uh you know tight ends you got running backs all these things Percy Butler I’m not going to question his tough as he’s a little bit slighter in frame just I don’t think he’s going to necessarily be able to match up physically with some of these guys defo toughness is on record Jeremy Reed’s toughness is on record I don’t think anybody’s questioning Jeremy chin and then of course these rookies they got to prove it but certainly turn on the tape and you can see a little bit that and then instincts we’ve talked about this pretty much all week all the last couple weeks instincts are always a combination of football IQ and sensory ability I think a player like Juan Martin when you’re under sized like that playing such an important role in a defense you have to have that higher football IQ you’ve got to really be able to display the mental acuity I kind of think back to a guy like Ronda Barber Hall of Fame quarterback shifted to safety for part of his career he he made up for a lot of his physical deficiencies and I think Quan Martin is more athletic than Ronde but what Ronde lacked in physicality athleticism he made up for with his his intelligence and his football IQ making sure that he’s in the right space so um for safy you also want to add tackling ability coverage versatility football IQ again is is gonna be a massive one uh so when you talk about guys like Juan Martin seeing them be able to crash the Box make tackles as a solo tackler hold on until the Cavalry arrives or get in on the action as a group tackler that’s incredibly important and again DK Forest his tackling ability is pretty welln Jeremy Reeves same thing Jeremy chin from his time in the Carolina Panthers known as a very solid tackler as well but should the Washington commanders consider adding to this safety group there is a top 20 safety in the NFL available should the commanders go after him I say yes they should I’m G to tell you why Justin Simmons should not just be an emergency option for the Washington commanders that’s coming up next on today’s episode of Locked on commanders part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day if I told you there was a top 20 safety in the National Football League without a team you don’t got to trade for him you probably don’t have to overpay for him you don’t got to give him a big long contract and he’s available you would probably tell most NFL teams to go after that dude but for some reason Justin Simmons still available uh Justin Simmons in a recent ESPN poll Jeremy Fowler reported this Justin Simmons not ranked in the top 10 in this ESPN poll they went after Executives coaches and Scouts in the National Football League polling them anonymously so the results are public but who said what and all that stuff not known which is the only way you’re going to get these guys to speak candidly about some of these players So Not Top 10 in in the votes counted but he was one of seven honorable mentions right so you can call him top 17 safeties in the NFL they didn’t rank the honorable mentions so I don’t know if he was the 11th honorable mention or the 17th honorable mention right but either way Justin Simmons by NFL Executives by coaches by Scouts he’s the top 17 safety in the league there’s 32 teams in the NFL every NFL team needs two safeties so 64 minimum starting safeties this dude’s top 17 doesn’t have a job there were eight other safeties that also got votes as potential top safeties in the NFL so that’s 25 none of these safeties are Washington commanders Juan Martin didn’t get any Jeremy chin didn’t get any Percy Butler Derrik Forest none of these guys got any votes so the top 25 in the NFL again that’s just according to this survey so take it with a grain of salt because we don’t know how many teams had participants vote we don’t know who voted we don’t know how many of them like you might have a Dallas Cowboys executive like no way I’m voting for a Washington Commander you might have a Carolina Panthers executive who’s mad that Jeremy chin left so no way he’s going to vote for him you know what I mean things like that but at the end of the day you you assume you had a pretty solid return for ESPN to actually publish these thoughts and publish these these results and not everybody’s gon have a grudge against Washington not everybody’s gonna have a grudge against say Jeremy chin right so the fact that there are no Commander safeties Quan Martin’s not really surprised Percy Butler Derrick Forest you wouldn’t expect them to be there Jeremy chin pretty much the only guy that you would expect to possibly be at least mentioned in the top 25 uh but he was not so that alone would give Credence and I know that there are some of some of you out there who are going to yell the sh the top of your lungs yes Justin Simmons is better than any safety you have right now on the roster you should absolutely go get him why aren’t the Washington compers going to get him well part of the reason might be that Justin Simmons turns 31 in November they did bring in some older veterans obviously maybe they feel like they brought in enough older veterans they don’t want to oversaturate their team with older veterans because it does take away from the opportunity to see these younger guys and all those things uh Justin Simmons from Manasses Virginia you you like you know kind of a local type of guy spent eight years with the den Broncos after being a third round pick in 2016 according to spot track his market value is around 11.2 Million by now Washington could probably get him in the8 to1 million do range and the eight is the like low low range and that’s probably too low 10 million is probably the more realistic maybe you guarantee him $8 million including his bonus and then give him some incentives to reach the 10 to 11 million dollar range um last year 50% of his snaps in 2023 came as a free safety 22% of them came as a box safety so he kind of fills that role that we’re talking about like you put Justin Simmons on one side of Jeremy Chen you put Quan Martin on the other side of Jeremy chin and you kind of have that ability to have two safeties on the field that can cover deep or play in the box and so you don’t have to give too much away just when your safeties when you look at the amount of question marks it’s a double-edged sword because adding Justin Simmons it will like I said it’s it’s going to prevent you from getting full evaluations on some guys like Percy Butler Derrik Forest Jeremy Reeves Tyler Owens Dominique Hampton right because if he’s taking Snaps that’s somebody who can’t take snaps and again we talked about this like if there’s four safeties in watching they going to dominate the snaps you add Justin Simmons to the mix then I think it’s Jeremy chin Quan Martin Justin Simmons probably Derek Forest are your four safties are going to dominate those snaps which means Percy Butler Jeremy Reed Tyler Owens domy Campton not getting as many snaps not getting as much valuation opportunity not getting as much growth opportunity because yeah practice mental reps are great but everybody will tell you you get the most development and growth from being on the field uh all those things so those players that we just named who would be getting restricted snaps because of the presence of Justin Simmons could actually have longer Futures on your team but Justin Simmons clearly makes your team better today and potentially does all those things so it’s kind of the balance of like we bring in Justin Simmons we win two more games because he’s on our defensive and the trickle down effect and all that stuff but we end up drafting you know 18th overall instead of maybe 14th overall and in from those four picks like two DBS that we could have added for long-term success go so you know it’s kind of a double-edged sword how do you go about doing obviously the commanders have the cap space to do it so at a minimum I think Justin Simmons needs to be at the top of the emergency list of hey in case of emergency break glass sign Justin Simmons to a 10year guaranteed or a $10 million guaranteed one-year contract bring him into Camp um but there there is a market there there is an argument I think to be made for potentially bringing Justin Simmons in now and I think I just made it you got three safeties pretty much and again unless Joe Jor is like we’re completely scrapping the three safety look completely scrapping the 7db look allog together we’re only gonna have two safeties then okay maybe you don’t bring in Justin Simmons because I think you know even though he’s better and more proven I think right now than than Juan Martin I could see sacrificing the future development of quan Martin for the benefit of bringing in a guy who’s more establish L like Justin Simmons but if you’re running three safeties I mean I love def but Jeremy chin Quan Martin defo or Jeremy chin Quan Martin and Justin Simmons or hell go into training camp and let Quan Martin and defo battle out for that spot Jeremy chin defo SL Quan Martin and Justin Simmons and then you got the added bonus that you know knock on would it doesn’t happen but if Mike sers still struggles or if he gets injured you move Quan back in that slot now you got Quan in the slot Jeremy chin defo and Justin Simmons as your SA saes I mean again that looks a lot better uh in just what we know right now uh compared to what they have right now so again a lot of reasons to potentially sign Justin Simmons I don’t think it’s going to happen before training camp um but I think it could you know you certainly make an argument for why it should happen and that’s going to wrap up our safety Deep dive that’s G to wrap up all of our deep Dives so safety is the last group if you missed a group that you want to see just go back in the library here at the lock on commanders podcast it is there for you somewhere that is 1. Thanks, David. Looking forward to next week's show. You make a good argument for signing Timmons. I think there's a better argument for signing him in season/during TC if there is injury. The current S position with the Chinn, Forest, Martin combo, could be a strength.
