man they just swept out the Dodgers what a win in the series all of that is great I love where the Philadelphia Phillies are at we’re absolutely going to get into that but you kind of had an idea that the Phillies were asserting their dominance that series after two games so to me the bigger news of the day is we just found out a little over an hour ago that the Phillies just waved Whit marfield an insane move I did not see this coming remotely I don’t even know how to fully process this yet because it was so unexpected I thought the Phillies could add at the trade deadline I thought they could potentially I I don’t know move Whit marfield into a lesser role for the rest of the season but this is shocking to me for a lot of reasons it also tells me something about the Philadelphia Phillies that I didn’t necessarily feel over the past couple weeks and I may have to say that I was wrong about something a way that Dave debrowski John Middleton sfold and the brass of this team are going to approach the rest of this season so here’s how I looked at the Whit marfield situation I brought this up a bunch of times I’ve even said it was on the radio on 975 the fanatic I said I’m 100% sure that Whit marfield is going to be on this team the rest of the year I felt very very confident in that and I’ll tell you why because you went out and you acquired him this off season you gave him solid money he was your big offseason acquisition as far as a position player concerned and the reason you did that was you needed to add depth better than Jak cap now it turns out you found it because edmundo Sosa took a big step and well I was going to say Christian pche not so much Christian Pache but Rafael maron’s been very good and you’ve found guys that can kind of fill in those gaps and also your starters have just been so consistently good but you haven’t found enough yet and we knew the Phillies were going to add at the trade deadline right we knew they were going to add one outfielder maybe two outfielders there have been reports out there they’re looking for a starting caliber outfielder and a bench outfielder now here’s the thing right you get a starting caliber outfielder one of those guys that’s currently starting in the lineup get shifted down to a lesser role which would be a bench piece so it makes sense that you could get away with only doing one but this brings me to my point about what whip marfield being DFA or not DFA just cut flat out basically because he didn’t have any way to send him down this is what it brings me to right it’s not so much that Whit marfield was playing well that’s not why I’m surprised by this his numbers this year he’s batting 199 he’s been consistently around or under 200 277 OBP 295 slugging percentage 572 Ops for reference Garrett stubs batting 194 259 Ops 243 slugging 502 Ops I mean they’re not exactly the same numbers but Whit marfield a guy who was an all allar last year for the Toronto Blue Jays uh is on this team basically giving you the offensive production of Garrett stubs he hasn’t been great defensively anywhere he’s played so I understand I’m not saying like ah Whit marfield was too good for this team to have let go but I thought what was going to keep marfield on this team was his resume honestly I thought it was just going to be they look at it and say he’s a multi-time Allstar he’s a guy who’s been near the top of the league in batting multiple times in his career when he was in the American League like he has a sterling resume of success at the major league level it doesn’t mean he’s still good but it means there should be a reason to believe that player is still in him somewhere and I know we’re not like short end of the season the Philadelphia Phillies have played 90 games or 91 games um so yeah there’s enough of a sample size to make this call I thought the Phillies might look at and say of the people we we can acquire or anyone on this roster right now or in the miners do we have anyone that has more of that veteran presence that we could bring in that we trust to have been there before and do we believe that based on resume giving Whit marfield the rest of the season to figure this out even in a significantly lesser role could pay dividends and I thought the answer to that would be yes and one of the big reasons I thought the answer to that would be yes is because you have that luxury right you can afford to be wrong about Whit marfield by keeping him on the team because let’s say you go ahead and you trade for a starting outfielder they start in Center or left then either Roos or Brandon Marsh is going to be moving to the bench they’re a bench piece that’s solid so you start new guy castios then I’d imagine the new guy will star in Center Brandon Martian left Yan roas as a defensive replacement you can move on from Christian you can keep wh marfield as a utility guy wherever you need to do it and I think that would have been totally fine because of the buffer you’ve built for yourself in the standings how good this team is like you have the luxury of taking the chance for the best case scenario the best case scenario is Whit marfield plays like the guy you thought you were signing because I think the Phillies assumed he was going to be a really valuable piece of this tee this year he has absolutely not been but what does it tell you about the Philadelphia Philly strategy Dave Browski Sam fold John Middleton the guys who make big- time decisions for this team who get together the Brain Trust Rob Thompson I’m sure is somewhat in those conversations as well um what does it tell you about how they’re affecting things and why might I be completely wrong about this team I’ve very much been in the camp for the last month or so when talking about the trade deadline that the Philadelphia Phillies do not need to be as aggressive as it seems like the fan base wants them to you don’t need to trade top prospects you don’t need to go get the number one Outfield option you don’t need to do that much at the deadline because your team is already so talented you’re already better than everyone else so what I would do is try and thread that needle of hey we can get better but not giving up too much because we could already be good enough to win and then we keep our window open longer we don’t dump a bunch of prospects so that when we start having big money paid out to these guys and wheeler extension kicks in you pay Ranger Suarez eventually and you pay Bryson stot and you pay Alec B you got to replace Kyle schwarber and you got to replace Nick cion and JT rudo you could do that more financially uh safely uh but this move makes me feel like the Philadelphia Phillies are going to do some wild stuff at the deadline not like I I don’t know trade for something like Mike Trout I I don’t think that’s coming down the pipe guys but I look at Luis Robert and I say nice player to acquire probably going to be too expensive the Phillies don’t need to go all out like for a guy like that because they’re already this good but that way of thinking also is why I thought wh marfield was 100% going to be on the team the fact that the Phillies cut their losses there wh marfield says yeah we know we have the luxury of keeping this guy on the team but we’re not going to because we want to be even better we want to bring in guys that are contributing no doubt by the way Weston Wilson the guy who’s taking the roster spot in the meantime for uh Whit marfield so congrats to Weston Wilson on getting another shot but I think the Philadelphia Phillies are looking at this and saying yeah I’m not too worried about three four years down the line we’re going to try and keep our top prospects but we’re trying to get insanely good we’re trying to add like big time to this team not a bunch of players but the name you’re going to get in the Outfield could be a big name could be depending on the injury Cody Bellinger got hurt recently might have broken his like finger could be a Cody Bellinger maybe the price is reduced because he’s like got some issues right now uh could be Luis Robert could be Brent Rooker could be Jaz Chisum could be any of these guys but I see the Philadelphia Phillies being more aggressive than I even thought they would be at the trade deadline my premise of they’re good enough so you can try and be greedy and keep prospects and also add slightly and be good like stay ahead of everybody else in the pack Dave dembrowski does not seem like he wants to let this opportunity for this team go to waste and that’s the whole idea behind cutting Whit marfield that’s the whole idea behind moving on from a guy who I think you could have gotten away with keeping on the roster and had like it to me seemed like a lowrisk probably low but maybe somewhat High reward type of move to keep Whit marfield on this team I don’t know man it’s kind of wild what they did today out of nowhere I did not hear any Rumblings they were going to cut with marfield I don’t know where this came from I’ll keep you updated if I hear anything about if it was anything who knows I think back to him kind of throwing his arms up at Kyle schwarber in the first game of the series against the Dodgers where he got thrown out second kind of like a what in the world are you doing which was fair criticism it was a dumb base running move by Kyle schwarber but I was like it’s kind of weird coming from Whit marfield um I said I liked it in an episode earlier this week because I like even the top players being held accountable by everybody on the roster I like there to be even status when it comes to making mistakes and calling out mistakes but I I don’t know I’ll let you know if it’s something that maybe isn’t as much baseball related as it seems right now but he hasn’t been good the Phillies cup bait that shows you how focused they are on not just being good being much better than everybody else and you can’t do that with a guy not pulling his weight so Whit marfields gone wild a major major disappointment in assigning this off season and now you’re going to have to go add at the deadline to the Outfield absolutely maybe even another utility player that can play Outfield and infield we’ll keep you updated on that as we get closer to the trade deadline but that was the pressing breaking news it’s not every day that you release a guy that or cut a guy whatever terminology you want to use that was an All-Star last year that you signed that everyone loved as your big signing of the off season you do that before the trade deadine line that’s nuts so that took precedence but man the Phillies sweep out the Dodgers how good does that feel we’ll react coming know some of you might be like I can’t believe you didn’t lead with the sweep for the Dodgers I kind of here here’s the thing right my big reaction to this series was winning the series The Sweep is always there’s an element of Randomness in it one thing doesn’t go your way two days ago in the 43 Victory and who knows one thing or two things you don’t get a line drive double play yesterday that was very very lucky with Jeff Hoffman out there on the mound like who knows what happens in that game so I just look at winning series that’s the big victory to me but sweeps are even sweeter and the Philadelphia Phillies have announced their dominance yesterday I talked about are they the have they shown their the clear-cut like best team in the National League no debate anymore and my answer to that was yes well the team backed me up yesterday by winning 5-1 let’s talk quickly about how they did it uh let’s get the pitching out of the way because there’s something more fun to talk about than what the pitching was but was really good six Innings four hits one earned a big out against sh Otani in a big spot nine strikeouts a great performance by Aeron NOA then Matt strm Jeff Hoffman and Jose Alvarado came in none of them allowed a run uh you looked really really good like holding that Dodgers team the one run in two of the three games of the series outstanding they only allowed five runs as a pitching staff in this entire Series so great work by the Philadelphia Phillies little bit of luck with the line drive to Bryon stop when Jeff Hoffman was in a Bases Loaded Jam Bases Loaded one out line drive double a guy off second and you get out of it like that’s the kind of stuff I talked about the triple play against the Detroit Tigers earlier this year and I said doesn’t it feel like this team just have something special about him like special things just happen you start to get this feeling this magical feeling not oh this team’s so good they just beat teams like when you have that 10-1 Victory on um what night was that I’m an idiot on two Tuesday night that’s going to be a game where you come out of saying oh man this team is really really talented they’re really really good they’re better than the Dodgers right now they have great offense but when you see moments where it’s just like base is loaded one out big spot in a game dude hits a ball on the nose and next thing you know it’s in Bryson stots glove but it’s hit low enough to the ground that it looks like it might have bounced so the guy on second doesn’t freeze and then you double him off and you’re out of the inning like it’s just stuff happens to fall the Phillies way this year it’s hard to watch the season and not feel like there’s some magic happening we’re going to talk more about magic that’s even outside baseball coming up when we preview their matchup with the Oakland Athletics uh game one of thats tonight at 6:40 PM uh but back to the game against the Dodgers the pitching outstanding in this series they did an insane job against the top of the order uh I believe sh Otani will Smith Freddy Freeman had 10 strikeouts combined no extra base hits they might have been like five for 28 or something in the series those stats courtesy of Corey Sidman I’m giving that from memory because I don’t have it in front of me but like to do that against the Stars incredible and Rob Thompson talked about the pitching staff in the series and he said like that was the most impressive thing to him was taking care of the top of the Dodgers lineup now that’s the wrong answer all due respect to Rob Thompson he’s looking at the team as a whole but to me the most impressive part of the series was one Trey Turner last night my goodness the second batter of the game for the Philadelphia Phillies Tre Turner who went two for four last night just like he did the night before hit another another RBI another run scored he’s batting 348 he is the hottest hitter on planet Earth right now if July was only 12 days long Trey Turner would be the player of the month for July now it’s longer than that but you got a couple days in there that’ll be the allar star break so Trey will get to go out to Texas and continue to see live pitching because he’s going to play in the All-Star game at least for a couple of innings uh cuts down on the time like dude if he has I don’t know another week and a half of performance like this you’re going to have three straight player of the month honors in Philadelphia Bryce Harper in May Bryce Harper in June and Trey Turner has a very good chance to win it for July if this keeps up we’re not even halfway through the month but he’s been unbelievable since back from injury he’s been better since coming back from injury that doesn’t happen folks and everyone in the Phillies lineup had a hit besides Garrett stubs Kyle schorer one for four a bomb home run he’s on fire like he just came back from injury he don’t he won’t cool off Bryce Harper one for four Alec bow one for four Bryce stot one for four Nick castios one for three with a runs scored walk as well in there Brandon Marsh I’ve been telling you this guy’s an everyday player I’ve been telling you the biggest misstep on this team the one thing I can’t understand is how Brandon Marsh doesn’t play every day two for four two RB another home run two runs scored he’s unbelievable he should be playing every day in left field there’s no doubt Johan roas by the way who was one for four last night G stubs over for three uh roas made an amazing catch in center field near the angled wall like this team just has everything they’ve handled everything well every decision they’ve made has worked out that’s another reason why the Whit marfield thing we talked talked about in the opening segment I’m not going to lose sleep over one because it’s probably like your final spot on the roster as a phys player but also because I don’t know every move the Phillies make seemed to work out the Brandon Marsh thing is the only thing I’ll contend and they’re still consistently winning I just think in the long term they’re a better team with a higher ceiling with Brandon Marsh out there especially in the postseason with some of the ability he shown to be clutched but I don’t know man this team is so much fun they’re unbelievable they’re the clear best team in the National League Dave Roberts said as much after the manager of the Dodgers said after the series they’re clearly better than us right now so anyone who’s whining about oh the Dodgers had injuries shove it your manager said we’re better so I don’t know take it up with Dave Roberts not me I’m just some guy with the podcast we’re better than you uh but I also think the Philadelphia Phillies have submitted themselves as the clear best team in b baseb near the end of the month of July they’re going to play some teams like the Guardians and the Yankees that’ll make this very interesting to see how they stack up against some American League opponents they lost their Series against the Orioles earlier in the year now that was in the wake of coming back from London so how much do you evaluate that but it was an insanely good series against the Dodgers this team when you look back at the moments you realize how good this team can be and as we unlock more potential above just good team great team all alltime great Phillies team clear best team in baseball right now clear favorite for whatever like as we go up those tiers I think we’re going to look back at this series as one that brought you to another tier coming up next we’re going to talk about the final series before the All-Star break and some more of that magic that’s not exactly baseball related as the Philadelphia Phillies now you know what’s nuts like the Philadelphia Phillies if I remember correctly they have not had a rain out yet they’ve had rain games they’ve had delayed games they had a game that was delayed like eight hours due to rain or something basically when everything was all said and done but incredible it’s rained like I don’t know at some point in this season it had rained in like 35% of their games and they have not yet had a rain out tonight it looked like it was guaranteed thunderstorms through pitch through first pitch through the game time no way to get it in and guess what I wake up from a nap at like 3:30 and all of a sudden oh it’s not going to rain until 10: so they got a perfect window to get the game in against the Athletics that’s what I’m talking about man things just work out for this team it’s amazing it almost feels like the decades and Decades of bad Philadelphia sports luck the sports Gods the real Gods the weather gods everybody just came together and said we’re gonna pay you back with one perfect season now it’s easy to say in July I don’t want that to come back and bite me but bottom line weather looks good for tonight and the matchup with the Athletics looks good on paper in practice everything now could there be a let down after playing the Dodgers in that highly emotional series a bigger environment it’s not going to feel as electric I don’t think as s at Citizens Bank Park maybe it will maybe I’m underestimating Phillies fans but I don’t think it’ll be the same exact type of atmosphere as you had against the Dodgers just because the A’s aren’t that good but still a series that you want to have your final one ahead of the All-Star break tonight Saturday Sunday and the pitching matchups they’re getting interesting for the Philadelphia Phillies so Ranger Schwarz is on the mound tonight they’re facing Hogan Harris he’s thrown 44 and twoth thirs innings this year 322 ra not bad Lefty you saw righties in that series against the Dodgers so we’ll see if that affects you hav not seen a lefty for a little bit it definitely changes the lineup so the lineup tonight for the Phillies schwarber Turner Harper B all that’s normal casos but then the bottom of the lineup looks a lot different uh edmundo Sosa is playing second Weston Wilson’s playing Left Marshon is catching and Pache is in Center so different than like that Marsh stubs Roos type of bottom of the order that you’ve been seeing that’s totally fine I mean you should be able to take care of business against Hogan Harris who uh you really don’t have a lot of experience against but that’s fine the Phillies are minus 265 favorites in game one you will get a look at some guys so Brent Rooker is batting third he’s a guy you might be looking at to acquire um I don’t know how you feel about him we’ll talk about him more but he leads the team in home runs average and RB for the Oakland Athletics that’s probably the guy that I would like because I don’t think he’ll be as expensive as Luis Robert that’s a conversation for close to the trade deadline that might be the most intriguing part of this series to me I like the Phils in game one uh game two tomorrow you’re going to be looking at another heavily favored Phillies team but you’re throwing Tyler Phillips and Tyler Phillips is if you know anything about the 26 year old righty you haven’t really seen him all that much so from four Innings I I really I’m going to have to do some research and talked to about Tyler Phillips at a later date because with your issues in the rotation Michael Marcato not looking all that great who knows uh what you’re going to get in game two game three of the series you have an undecided listed because it sounds like Zack Wheeler is going to skip his start and then they’re going to reset everything and let him make his first start after the All-Star break almost well no not even almost the exact strategy I told you they should employ exactly what I told you they should do thank you Rob Thompson he must be an avid listener uh and follow of lock on and Phillies even even with that so the Phillies undecided starting pitcher in the final game of the series they have an 80 and a half percent chance to win according to ESPN analytics without even naming a pitcher that’s how much better they are than this team I don’t mean to say it like oh dismissed the Athletics the Athletics are not like terrible terrible they’re 35 and 60 almost a reverse record of the Phillies so a huge difference but they’re not the A’s of the past where they’re going to win like 35 games all year so that win two out of three don’t expect the sweep expect the series win if you don’t have it it would suck to lose a series to the A’s at home I don’t think the Phils are going to do it this team’s a monster I’m past the point of saying trap series I’m past the point of saying oh this could be a misstep they’re a machine they’re going to go out and take care of business they’re going to win at least two out of three Ranger Suarez I would love to see him bounce back and finish the first half proverbial first half because we know it’s not the real first half it’s more than that of the season with a uh a good encouraging performance because he hasn’t looked like himself lately but the A’s are the perfect team to do that against that’s pretty much the long and short of it so enjoy some baseball this weekend I’m G to try and get an extra episode out just because we have the allstar break coming up and I haven’t really had a chance to preview uh the stuff that’s going on there and the guys going I mentioned it but there’s still some there’s always something to talk about with this team so keep an eye out for another episode this weekend but that’s all for today’s episode
