Welcome to Brooklyn KJ

This particular overpay allows the Sixers to trade for DFS in January and stay under the second apron. Philly has up to four tradable firsts that could be included.

  1. 1. The 76ers will be just under the first apron once they fill out their roster. To avoid being hard-capped at that number, they’d have to send out as much money as they take back in a trade.

    2. Their main salary-matching piece would be KJ
Martin on a sign and trade, but due to a rule known as Base Year Compensation, his outgoing salary would only count as 50% of its new value in a trade. So if Martin signs for $8M his outgoing salary would only count as $4M.

This makes a midseason trade more likely. If Philly signs Martin to a short-term deal, they could aggregate his salary with other free agent signings after Jan. 15. BYC would not apply then.

  2. KJ won’t be eligible to be traded until January, I don’t think DFS will be on the roster by then. He likely gets moved to Cleveland before the season starts.
