Who Could The San Jose Sharks Turn To For Additional Goalie Help?
do the Sharks need a third goalie for some insurance and who’s potentially available as free agency has uh all but died at this point you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast curing your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young uh caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the locked on NHL Channel want to thank you for making locked on sharks your first listen probably part of the lockdown Network recovery your team every day if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just follow on wherever you get Podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be digging into some potential goalie insurance for the Sharks uh looking at guys who uh kind of as that third goalie who can play uh mostly in the AHL but if you need him to come up and play a couple games here in a pinch uh they’re able to do so so we’re going to dig into why the shark should look to add somebody here uh and look at some potential names that could be out there um as uh again free agency is all but wrapped up but there’s still some names out here as teams are feeling out kind of their NHL AHL rosters so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as playoffs wind down the Sports Stop sporting like we want them to but this summer fandel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long visit fanduel.com to get started all right so looking at the kind of current shark Barracuda goalie situation right um You have the uh McKenzie Blackwood coming back uh VCH V who the Sharks acquired at the trade deadline last year for Capo kinan um and then of course in the Barracuda you have Georgie Romanov and Magnus Crona both of whom played NHL games last season and you know I think if Mike GRE wanted to kind of ride with those four guys and say okay this this is it this is what we’re going to kind of go with I could totally you know I could see that but I wouldn’t be surprised if and my career even said it himself of looking at potentially bringing in a another goalie uh here and this is kind of a guy who can um play you know gonna spend the majority of the time in the AHL but if you have an injury to Blackwood or vanich he can kind of come up and give you a couple starts maybe you know like you know here or there maybe get like five starts out of him out of a season nothing super crazy right um but you’re just you’re trying to kind of give yourself some insurance that way um guys like Magnus Cronin and Georgie Romanov aren’t subjected to what happened to them last year right and Romanov played well in his kind of what what when he kind of came off but guy you know like Magnus Crona definitely struggled um in his time in the NHL had a good start here and there but like at for the most part uh struggled and needs to both those guys kind of need to continue to play AHL games um as they kind of get used to uh for Roman off right getting used to North American ice um uh and then for mag Kono right spending the year SP the year kind of getting ready used to the Pro game but both those guys right you don’t want to kind of keep getting them having them come up and getting Shell Shocked uh or just shelled basically and ruining any confidence that they start to kind of build up uh playing with the Barracuda so you know when you look at Blackwood and VK vanich their career right Blackwood played a uh you know he he played 44 games last year which was the second most in his career the you know the most since preco uh times you know the past couple Seasons he had dealt with a lot of injuries where he only played 22 and 25 games um and kind of lost his his starting spot um so right and even last year Blackwood got dinged up here and there and Capo kaken kind of had to take the reins for for a little while you know looking at VC Vanek um who’s been much healthier until last year you know you look last year he played 32 games with 29 starts um year before he had 52 games with 48 starts 42 games um the year before that so he’s been a little bit more durable but again he did have a kind of a season ending injury here so um The Hope is again you’re you’re looking for somebody who you think can give you a little bit of a again if you need a game or two out of the Season without maybe kind of putting your um young goalies out there to potentially get shelled again um which again we we we think the sharks are going to be a little bit better but they’re probably uh still going to have the occasional dud of a game right that’s just especially when you have a lot of young players uh you’re gonna have those those Duds of games unfortunately and with the way the baruda been kind of putting together their team like wouldn’t be surprised if you know this this team Barracuda team they got some really quality veterans will spend some time here soon kind of digging into the barracudas offseason a little bit more um but like this team could hopefully potentially start to be much more competitive which is I think something we just want to see at the Barracuda is them just being more competitive and more consistent which was a big issue with them last year of just uh the consistency right uh unable to they were consistently inconsistent right um put together a win followed by a loss put together a win followed by a loss put together a win followed by like they couldn’t string together wins so um that’s why I think getting a goalie who can how about the young players especially um in the AHL if if Romanov and or Magnus croner are kind of going through a tough spell you know especially with in the AHL where there’s so many back-to-backs right how many times is it Friday Saturday night game on Friday night game on Saturday night right or uh game on St night game on Sunday afternoon like this with the kind of weird schedule that AHL has having a veteran goalie Who’s kind of played plenty of games um has some NHL experience which I think is you know helpful to have one of those guys a veteran type of guy right your Aaron Dell like player who can come in play a couple games when needed um be good you know be a good locker room guy in the in the AHL um and when things are kind of and just be that you know kind of be a good Mentor for the younger guys um and also give you at least a competitive fight um with when called upon in the NHL so um and it’s not going to like this is going to be a vetman type of deal um you’re going to have to sign to an NHL contract and and push this player through waivers um you know and but like there’s there’s so many goalies out on the market right now or like I know there’s teams like they have they have a lot of teams have this type of guy like there there’s if if said goalie goes on waivers I’m not going to be super worried about him potentially being claimed unless there’s an y um in training camp or something like that which does happen um but I I think for the sharks like it’s worth the risk there and if not you can always kind of maybe trade for one right you got Devon Coy at the trade deadline last year to kind of come in and be that SEC be the back of goalie um while you’re to kind of again help Magnus Crona and help Georgie Romanov let those guys kind of play in with the Barracuda that way they’re not getting crushed night in and night is as we saw from Plenty of games from San Jose so yeah I think it’s you know other than right shot defenseman which I still think is a huge uh issue for for the sharks um and I think that’s that’s their number one priority is to try to find a right shot Puck moving defenseman um I still think this this is pretty high up on on the to-do list for Mig grer as he tries to uh Mig gr and Joe will to try to find a goal you can kind of slide in and slide out wherever you need him um you know in worst case scenarios then maybe you have to send Crona or Andor we to send Magnus Crona or Geor uh Georgie Romanov to the ECHL like to get some games that’s fine that’s what the echl’s for um is to make sure that some of these guys get games so not worried about that like those those guys are still young enough where you want them you just want them playing as much as possible um but again not put into a a position where they’re kind of in a bad spot night in and Night Out playing uh NHL games so because I don’t think either one of those guys are quite ready to to take on an NHL load here uh yet so uh we’ll look at some some guys who I you know I have three guys who I kind of looked at who I think could be realistic options and we have two guys who are a little bit on the younger side and one guy who’s a a kind of Veteran type of player and then we’ll look at some of the other names out there that could be potential options as well uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second passionate drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay MERS is everything you need to maintain your vehicle and level it up to Peak Performance superchargers roof fxs exhaust kits LED headlights let’s look at some potential goalies I have three who I think make a lot of sense and we’re gonna start with one Ivan proov uh who spent last year um playing with the in the Colorado uh system so I Prosper top 6 foot5 189 PBS 25 years old um so kind of fits that Mike Greer big athletic uh kind of mold right um in the AHL with Colorado the Colorado Eagles he had 21 games 2.33 goals against 921 save percentage with 550 saves um got some NHL games as well last year he played 11 games with the Avalanche um 316 goals against average 895 save percentage had 26 goals allowed I expected goals allowed was 26.8 s so goal saved above expected was 87 and high danger save 813 High danger save so um pretty solid numbers I think for that’s like kind of the numbers you’re looking for right is um I know Colorado is a much better team um but I think ay proov who’s 25 um still kind of in that you know maybe that development range and maybe he’s kind of hit that where he’s he’s at and that’s in ah highend AHL go low-end NHL player kind of that tweener type of goalie but I think for the Sharks Barracuda like he’d be a huge addition for for the Barracuda who um have a lot of young defenseman right um I know it would probably hurt the Romanov Magnus Corona potential but I think he’s just a better goal and if we want to see a more competitive Barracuda team I think prava is a really really nice fit for uh for San Jose and kind of what they’re trying to put together here um so he’s still as of I’m recording right now still has not been signed by anyone which I think is a little um interesting and you know I but I still think that is a a a player who I think could be kind of one of those guys where if you need him to play a couple NHL games I don’t think the lights are going to be too big for him um but I think he’s going to to spend his time in the AHL and Elevate Elevate um the Barracuda and their situation and you know if Romanov and Crona need to kind of fight for that backup spot then so be it right we’ve seen Mike Greer you know say we want guys to earn their earn their jobs and um you know I I I think that’s fine they’re still gonna play a ton of games um just because of the AHL schedule but like let those guys kind of continue to fight it out and let those guys kind of continue to to battle and and if proov is you know gets called upon to play NHL games right if you can get basically 900 save percentage out of him I think you’re you’re feeling pretty happy about that um and uh you know again you’re you’re not kind of D away uh when if you’re rolling Prosper toov out to play a couple games for for you um on the sharks so another guy um who could be a potential option um much more a much older player um that would be Magnus hellberg so he’s 6’6 209 PBS 33 years old um last year in the AHL between Charlotte and wilberry uh had 27 games 275 goals against average 904 save percentage um 656 saves also played some NHL games as well played with the Penguins he played three games 250 goals against average 922 sa percent um five goals allowed in three games is not that’s not too too bad 688 expected goals um allowed and he so he’s goal saved above expected was almost two at 1.88 the high danger save of 800 um more I think in uh with hellberg I think more of the Aaron Dell type uh of player where much older right I think he kind of knows what his role is there um would I still think help elevate probably more of a shared role I think in the AHL um compared to prerov I think would be more of kind of the starter um for for the barracudo I think hellberg would kind of be more of a like the 1 a1b with if it’s Roman a Crona whichever um I kind of give Romanov right now I give Romanov The Edge because I think he’s played better especially the way the end of the season went um I just I think romanov’s got he’s got another gear that he’s he’s going to find here really soon so um compared to Crona but hellberg though would more the Aaron Dell type right of good veteran he’s gonna be good in the locker room he’s gonna help out uh assume he’s gonna be able to help out the team or help out the young guys kind of you know teach those guys whatever they need him to do and then um if he needs to come up and play in the NHL he’s not going to it’s not going to be embarrassment he’s not going to poop his pants um and give up seven goals and on 12 shots type of of scenario right right he’s going to be a professional out there um and again that is what you’re looking for just in worst case scenario um is if Blackwood who has struggled with injuries and VK Vanek who’s coming off a season ending injury um just can you have a professional out there and I think hellberg would would definitely kind of do that so uh next guy here um Adam Shield uh 6’3 190 pounds so maybe not quite the height that you’re you know Mike G maybe not the size that you’re kind of looking for or at least Mike GRE seems to be looking for 25 played a ton of games in the HL last year 42 games 284 goals against the average 907 save percentage 1101 uh saves on Chicago uh just as a reminder Chicago last year was did not have an NHL affiliate so he is yet to make his NHL debut that’s doesn’t doesn’t quite you know click that that check that box there of you know as a guy who can kind of come in and play NHL games but I still think like that that Chicago team was not very good last year right they missed the playoffs um and he posted pretty solid numbers for a team that um again was not kind of what we expect from the Chicago Wolves team I know they kind of dealing with some issues of not having an actual NHL kind of Mothership team um that’s been fixed now between them in the Carolina Hurricanes um you know they they kind of got a lot of their talent gutted after making a championship run um you know of course losing Ryan rovski a couple years ago etc etc like kind of part of the natural that team taking a dip but those are really still pretty solid numbers on a bad team um and he played a ton of games and when you’re a guy like that like I’m kind of curious to see like [Music] like there’s something there I think with with him and if he could potentially diamond in the rough type of guy but again he’s gonna come in I think he’d kind of be your starter for the Barracuda and if he gets you know like he’s played enough pro games where I think if he would get into the NHL and have to start a couple games I don’t expect things to kind of the wheels to fall off maybe they do maybe they don’t you never know when what happens when you get to NHL but I I still think they’re that’s a guy I’d be willing to bet on just because if he’s played he’s played a lot of pro games so far even if he has not played um NHL games and you know even looking at like kind of his uh his path like played a lot in college played a lot like he’s played a lot in the AHL um I I don’t know why I just I have a feeling just got a feeling about a guy like that you know he’s played 87 games so far um over four seasons uh between the Texas Stars and the Chicago Wolves um in the AHL so I think like that probably deserves a chance to maybe get see the NHL so um those are three guys who I would I would be like sign me up for any of those three guys because I think they would kind of fill that role all of them a little bit different right proov and shield may be a little bit younger maybe a little bit of upside to to potentially tap into uh hellberg definitely the Aaron Dell veteran type of player but I think all three of those guys would one help the Barracuda and two hold down the fort while you waited for vanich or Andor Blackwood to get uh healthy so we’ll look at some of the just other names out there um it gets very Bleak very fast here um and you know just throwing some names out there so we’ll get to those here in just one second I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but as the playoffs are now done we have fewer games these Sports aren’t sportsing like I want them to but FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I’m in the mood this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball all right um so kind of the the the best of the rest here and it’s a little tough um uh I’m not going to lie it’s it gets a little little tough here so looking at so guys who were like guys who were ufas last year um who are now like actually guys are U UFA aser who actually uh played or actually had an NHL game um it’s brutal like it is uh it’s it’s brutal here so um you’re looking at pull up cap friendly while we still have cap friendly right now so these are the guys who played NHL games as goalies um who are ufas complet like anti it’s 35 played 24 games last year um I just I don’t see him kind of in the AHL type of of role Uh Kevin lanin in um maybe he’s 29 but right maybe he kind of slides into that role there uh Martin Jones we we’ve lived that uh experiment before um and the sharks are still paying him to just not be here so I don’t really see that one uh Magnus hellberg who we just talked about Michael Hutchinson uh was also 34 maybe kind of the you know like hellberg could be a potential fit there of a guy who just wants to kind of continue his career play in the AHL doesn’t really you know he played last year with uh one game last year thr were Red Wings and played a bunch of games with the Grand Rapids we’re at a 892 save percentage and 289 goals against average um and 32 games with the Grand Rapids so another one of the kind of hellberg older type of guys um who who could be a potential addition there and then Malcolm suban um who played last year uh one game with the Columbus Blue Jackets uh where he had 914 save percentage and three goals against um split time in the AHL between the Springfield Thunderbirds and the Cleveland monsters um did not pose great numbers with the Cleveland monsters at the end of the season decent numbers with the Thunderbirds we had 31 games and 294 goals against 907 save percentage so you know kind of another one that’s a potential option there but as you can see like goalies are in in tough kind of T you know they they try to grab him as best they can so those are all the goalies who are un like ufas who are are out there um some of the rfas um who are no longer with their so you have uh Carter Hart Who of course that whole scenario he is right as nuclear waste uh Jeremy Swan who uh of course the um and uh ukaa Luc Luca Nan excuse me um those guys they still have their rights owned by the uh of course by the Bruins and the and the sabes and they don’t like those guys are like NHL starters or Swan’s like an amaz like those guys are NHL players right they’re they’re kind of not what we are looking for uh then you have Ivan uh uh Pros uh who we just talked about uh who is a UFA because of group six didn’t get accumulate enough NHL games kind of like E2 memi who uh was kind of in the same same spot so that’s why he’s a free agent so those are like the guys who played NHL games that’s it those are the guys so um if you’re looking for more AHL only type of of of players um so Tony and drus who I’m butchered his last name uh Tony who does if you do anything about AHL he’s like the guy with the AHL coverage rents inside AHL um he does a a really nice big board kind of free agency um you know and like his goalie even going through his top 15 goalies like it is also very much picked over just because teams are trying to find goalies you know um that could be potential additions here so you know and he has like Yuri Peta who played in Henderson last year um he had 25 games play last year with a 903 save percentage um you know like but again these guys are kind of still in that same like probably AHL guys and maybe maybe they could play in the NHL where we’re still that’s yet to be seen so I’m not you know like that that doesn’t really I want someone who can kind of play in the NHL and you you can at least get a couple starts out of them um of course our old friend Aaron Dell is still out there um you know he he played with Ontario last year I know he’s been working out in San Jose still his F you know his uh he lives in in the the Bay Area maybe a reunion there if things get desperate but he could also be like we saw last year a lot of like he got a PTO and earned a contract that way um so that could be another type of of of option for him and you know again it just gets really kind of thin really quickly here with guys who you think can be NHL at least play a couple NHL games here so um Prav is is probably the guy I would be like yeah let’s like that’s the guy I kind of feel like there’s a chance there because there could be something extra that we don’t really know uh with him and he could be probably not but he could be you know maybe has another level to go as he’s kind of hitting that age 25 26 where goalies are really kind of hitting their peaks uh because they do take longer um and hellberg a guy like hellberg who I think again more like that Aaron Dell scenario where he’s just gonna kind of come in do what’s ass he’s gonna be good guy in the locker room and help out some of the some of those younger guys so um yeah goalies get uh it’s very very uh it’s very sparse out there at least when it comes to available Talent that’s like played in NHL games um it’s very very uh it’s very thin out there when you’re trying to find somebody so um that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back tomorrow uh probably talk about some winners and losers from free agency so look at specific sharks players and uh which guys were were helped the most by free agency in the draft and which guys were maybe hurt uh because of some of the moves my career uh and the sharks made so we’ll dig into that tomorrow probably start to dig into uh the draft class here soon and you know kind of get to know some of these guys a little bit better so make sure you guys are following wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well uh follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks uh follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until tomorrow bye friends [Music]
While the San Jose Sharks are set in goal with Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek, could Mike Grier and company look to add some netminder help for the San Jose Barracuda and insurance if Blackwood or Vanecek get hurt? Start by looking at the Shark goalie roster and why adding an AHL goalie who can play NHL games in a pinch is worth it. Start with Ivan Prosvetov, who split time between the Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Eagles and still might have some development left. Then Magnus Hellberg would fit the Aaron Dell veteran mold for an AHL goalie who can play the occasional NHL game. Also, look at Adam Scheel, who played for the Chicago Wolves but has not cracked the NHL yet. Finally, go through the other goalies who played NHL games last year and are still available to be signed.

A solid goalie is the difference between holding a win and giving up a comeback goal. Chrona looked real nice. I really wish we went in on that Linus Ullmark trade
Vanecek will have a bounce back year
It’s interesting that our management is sleeping on with Makiniemi. I think he’s a solid goalie and I would definitely try to give him more games in the NHL and see what’s in him. He looked solid in those 2 games in 22/23 szn. It would be pitty if we let him go just like that.considering his contract ended this year.
Mike grier should go after yaroslav askarov from NSH. We have the ammo to acquire him. VGK 1st round pick, ferraro, bordeleau, and bystedt for askarov? Maybe too much but id do it
I thought Prosvetov looked solid lasy year, I hope its the one we can get. Id be really thrilled about it!
Sharks should see what it would cost to get Tarasov from CBJ. Looked pretty good last year considering the team he was on….(1st rd. 2025 Vegas pick., SJS 2nd rd pick 2027, Zetterland, Ferraro, Bordeleau should be available to trade, and try thrown in Vanecek). Could also see if the Kraken would be willing to part with Dacccord. They seemed to prefer Grubauer last year when he wasn't hurt. Sharks need another top-5 pick and a couple more top-10's and the team should be set. D and G should be the priority, in the 1st and 2nd rounds at least, so maybe wait a year or two and then try to upgrade goaltending and defense. Definitely don't want to rush the rebuild, look at the Kings, they are quite a mess, esp at Goal and haven't looked great in the playoffs.
Swayman offer sheet? A guy like that almost never is available… I think our priority is over the next 5 years keep bolstering the blue line with upgrades. Obviously even Sway (or a very stellar Blackie last year) can get lit 🔥 up if the D-core is leaky. To me a Stanley Cup is a solid 3rd-line, big & solid D-core and a hot goalie!
Should’ve kept Cooley ☹️
Who would you say is the best goalie prospect in the league right now?
Getting a 3rd goalie is pretty important in my opinion, just because I think winning games is pretty important for the Cuda. I don’t want Cardwell and Bystedt leading a team that is scoring over 3 goals a game but also not in the playoffs
What about trying to get Filip Gustavsson from the wild. Him with Blackwood could be a solid tandem.
ASKAROV for the love of hockey please Grier pull this off and set the sharks up for the next 15 years
Is Chris Dreiger still available and healthy?
