Garrett Wilson speaks on the Devante Adams rumors

Garrett Wilson was asked about the Devante Adams trade rumors and he said “I see that. I’m excited. I’m with all of it. Anyone we can get into the facility to help this team win games, I’m with it and he is one of those.” – reported by Brian Costello of the New York Post

Now to speak further on the actual possibility of a trade. I made a post yesterday that you are welcome to look at but I would like to elaborate on it.

So for the trade to realistically happen it would definitely have to be at the trade deadline and the Jets would have to be in a position where we are looking toward a playoff run and Super Bowl chase. The other key part to the trade is that the Raiders would have to be in a position where their season isn’t looking to good and they are wanting to restock/rebuild for the 2025 & 2026 seasons, AND Devante Adams wants out of LV. While we have no clue where each team will stand at the point of the trade deadline it is very much possible. It is not an uncommon thing that a team looking to restock for next season trades away a star player to a team that is looking to add a final piece to a championship run. We take a look at the recent past to see some examples.

2022 – Ravens acquired Roquan Smith from the Bears for a 2nd and 5th round pick.

2022 – 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey from the Panthers for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round pick.

2021 – Rams acquired Von Miller from the Broncos for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

2019 – Rams acquired Jalen Ramsey from the Jaguars for two 1st’s and a 4th round pick.

2018 – Cowboys acquired Amari Cooper from the Raiders for a 1st round pick.

Now with all of that being said people still have questions whether or not the trade is possible due to cap space and contracts. To put it simple, YES it is very much possible. But here is the breakdown.

With the trade happening at the deadline the Jets will only take on what is remaining from his salary in 2024 which is estimated to be around $8M, the Jets currently sit at $6M so all it will take is a little contract restructuring or player cutting to gain that difference of $2M. With the Devante Adams dead cap being $40 for 2024 the Raiders will only have to clear $6M because they have a cap space of $34M, which can also be done with some quick contract restructuring or player cutting. Now onto Devante’s contract in the future, I have had people saying that we won’t be able to afford him in the future which just isn’t true. While we do only have $6M in 2024, the Jets are estimated to have over $70M in cap space in 2025. That is more than plenty to take on Devantes contract and still be able to sign and extend other players.

This will also clear a large chunk of cap for the Raiders in 2025 and 2026 which they can for sure use because they are only projected to have $24M in 2025. So instead of paying him a $35M salary they would only be paying $15M in dead cap, which would double there cap space for 2025.

The NFL salary cap is projected to be increased from $250M to $300M by 2026, so this would also play a factor.

Thanks!

  1. I am not the best when it comes to numbers, so if anything is off feel free to correct me 🙂

  2. Another key thing to note is that the Raiders are holding onto $34M in cap space for in season flexibility. Which could be to maybe add a couple FAs throughout the season or it could be to make a Davante Adams trade possible. The Jets also have an extra 3rd round draft pick to shop with after trading back in the draft. Those are just a few other details I would like to mention.

  3. I mean Wilson did switch his number. Makes you think..🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  4. This is the all-in season where JD handed out incentive laden 1 year deals to Tyron Smith and Mike Williams, and where we’re not sure if Rodgers will play another season. If Adams can be had for a fair price go get him.
