Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 127: Rod Breedlove

LB Rod Breedlove (1965-1967)

Rod Breedlove was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1960 NFL Draft out of the University of Maryland. At UMD, Breedlove earned First-Team All-ACC Honors in 1957 and 1958, as well as Second-Team All-ACC in 1959. He was also voted Maryland’s 1960 Male Athlete of the Year. On the eve of the final preseason game of his rookie year, he was traded to the Washington Redskins when they lost their starting linebacker.

After five seasons with the Redskins in which he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 1962, he signed with the Steelers for his final three years in the league. In Pittsburgh, he appeared in 39 games, making two interceptions and recovering 4 fumbles.

After retirement, he worked for over two decades in customer service for Metropolitan Meat, Seafood and Poultry Company. In 1980, he was inducted into the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame. He passed away on May 25, 2021 at the age of 83.

  1. Hey, I’ve heard of this guy!

I think he was a member of the 10-10 club (sacks and INTs) with Washington, a reasonably difficult milestone to reach. By the time the Steelers got him, he was kind of on the downswing. He started one season but produced more as a 3rd down linebacker the next year
