we have the veterans reporting the full team will be reporting so we’re going to start spinning ahead and kind of answering some of the questions that I think are surrounding this team and I’ve got a couple today that I’m going to talk about the first one obviously um as I teased before on the show opening Daniel Jones why is there optimism that this year could be his best one now a lot of you are going to say what are you talking about the guy is coming off of a knee injury why do you think it’s going to be a good season for him folks I’m going to be optimistic here I’m going to look at the glasses being half full I’m going to tell you why I think Daniel Jones is going to have a good year and then in segments two and three we’re going to talk about the draft class the class of 2024 what are the realistic expectations for the six member class so that is today’s agenda thank you again for joining us let’s Jump Right In okay starting off with Daniel Jones now you know despite the fact that it’s been made clear clear that Daniel Jones is going to be the starter regardless you know of how Drew lock does regardless of how Tommy DeVito does once Daniel Jones is healthy he is going to be the starter there are still a lot of people out there who are kind of nervous about that and they’re like what have the Giants seen in him that would give them reason to trust him as their quarterback and I’ve had some people write to me and tell me this and I’ve even said this too on and also my writing that it would behoove the Giants to set up a competition for Daniel Jones maybe have drew lock push him or you know Drew lock and Tommy DeVito and Nathan W just have a competition don’t just automatically hand Daniel Jones the job and then I got to thinking about it as I was putting my notes together for the show and I said you know what there is a competition for Daniel Jones and no it’s not necessarily Drew lock no it’s not necessarily Tommy DeVito or Nathan War the competition is Daniel Jones so it’s Daniel Jones versus Daniel Jones and I know what as I just said that I have that Spider-Man meme you know in my head where the two twin Spider-Mans are kind of pointing at each other but let me explain to you what I mean by that Daniel Jones when the heat has been lit under his seat he has risen to the occasion all right now I’m going to go back to the 2022 season because I think this is a great example of Daniel Jones going up against Daniel Jones competing against himself if you will and coming out on top and I know it’s just one you know small sample size but right now that’s all we have to go on so in 20122 before that season started Joe Shane Brian D of course were new to the team they had a decision to make you know do we Fran uh do we uh pick up Daniel Jones’s option year in his rookie deal or do we let him play for his next contract and we all know what happened they decided to let him play for his next contract and some of you are like well they should have picked it up and and and just rolled with it and some of you are like oh they made the right decision now as far as I’m concerned they made the right decision at the time despite what happened in that season here’s why they made the right decision they were both new D and Shane and there were some question marks regarding um Jones’s injury history would he make it through an entire season how would he do in the new system that Brian da was was developing so a lot of question marks and they needed to see answers from Daniel Jones so now Daniel Jones is challenged it’s like okay Daniel you want to be the long-term quarterback here compete against yourself show us what you got and you know what folks he rose to the occasion all right so he stayed healthy the entire year played in 16 of the seven games the one game he missed that was the philly game if you remember the end of the year when dble decided to sit all the starters ahead of the playoffs Daniel Jones That season had career highs in completion percentage 67.2% he also had a career high accuracy rate 81% he threw a career low in interceptions with five he threw a career low in bad throws 12.2% of his throws were bad he had uh let me see 3,25 yards which was the second most um passing yards he had in his career just shy of what he said in his rookie season his success rate which is you know picking up at least 40% of the required yards on first down 60% on second and 100% on third fourth down that was a career high 45.7% and let me see his touchdowns he only threw 15 touchdowns That season but that was the second most he threw in his career so basically the Giants put a chip on his shoulder and they said okay kid you want to stick around here show us what you got and Daniel Jones Rose to the occasion showed them what they got got the four-year deal for $160 million and the deal of course with the out claw after this year the year two of the deal because look you can’t just go and and spend a ton of money on a guy who really just did it for one season you got to have a a history there so that’s why Joe Shane set that up that way so what does that have to do with this year well guess what the Heat’s under Daniel Jones’s seat again right he’s coming off the ACL he’s been you know rehabbing like like crazy um he has been working like a demon okay uh you’ve probably seen the video on on X formerly known as Twitter of him throwing the p and moving around and everything like that it was posted by QB country with whom Jones has been working out and he went through the entire spring with a bit of a chip on his shoulder you know almost like okay look enough’s enough stop kicking me stop you know dragging my name around I’m here I’m going to rise to the occasion that’s kind of the impression you got just in watching Daniel Jones and in listening to him you kind of saw that a fire was lit under his backside so again I know it’s just one occurrence that in 2022 but when Daniel Jones has had his back up against the wall He Has Come Out Swinging he has come out and and just you know on fire and has played well enough to kind of quell the um the critics around him so if you’re looking for a reason to be optimistic about Daniel Jones that would be the one I would give you um throw in the fact that Brian dable is probably going to call the plays now this is important because look when Brian dable first came here when he was first hired he sat with Daniel Jones and he said okay what kind of play do you like what don’t you like and they tweaks D’s offense to what Daniel liked to do and what he didn’t like to do but then D you know because he was still trying to find his footing as a head coach passed that off to Mike Kafka the play calling and even though Kafka understood the system and everything it’s not quite the same because what Kafka might do in one situation D might do something totally different so the feeling is now that with dable calling the place and again it hasn’t announced but that’s how it’s leaning towards with d calling the plays that Daniel Jones assuming he stays healthy that’s the big you know if um that he will come back and he will look closer to being the quarterback he was in 2022 than he was last year when he was just under siege and you know we could also talk about the the additions made to the offensive line we could talk about the receivers all that stuff that all factors in absolutely but the bottom line is that Daniel Jones’s back is against the wall just as it was coming into the 2022 season He Came Out Swinging he had a good showing and he shut up his critics or most of his critics so now it’s the same thing can he replicate that in 2024 like he did in 2022 well the giant season’s going to depend on it we’ll find out you know sure soon enough you know training camp uh will start for the veterans on they report on the 23rd first practices 24th and we’ll see if Daniel Jones comes you know comes out and starts practicing with his hair on fire all right coming up next we’re going to take a look at the first three of the six member draft class what are the realistic expectations for them we’ll tell you we’ll start to tell you right after this hey John fans there’s so much going on these days in the area with baseball concerts shows the WNBA and pretty soon the return of football hockey and means we’re all back to five days a week not that you know I was gone for much as far as vacation goes I tried to give you five days a week even when I was technically on vacation but we are here with all new episodes we did the previews of the opponents the last couple weeks and now we’re going to focus on getting you ready for training camp and of course the 2024 NFL season which is going to be a good one I just have that feeling it’s going to be a good one right it can’t be any worse than it was last year I would hope but anyway speaking of good and speaking of Hope let’s talk about the New York Giants 2024 draft class and what we might realistically expect from them now this is just my guess I don’t have a crystal ball I don’t I can’t predict the future this is just my educated guess as to what each member might contribute as as far as stats as far as you know um playtime as far as their roles and all that good stuff so let’s kick it off we’re going to do the first three in this segment we’ll kick it off with wide receiver Malik neighbors all right now Malik neighbors the number one receiver going into Camp still has to technically earn it but I think we can all safely assume that Malik neighbors is going to be the guy U for the Giants the number one receiver so what do I see for him I think he’s going to be a guy that they move around outside in the slot maybe even you know see if they don’t try him from the back field uh just to change things up going to be a nice chess piece that could be moved around I’m forecasting 70 receptions 105 yards six touchdowns for half all right I do think he is going to be the first thousand yard receiver since Odell which uh I think the last time uh the Giants had the 1,000 yard receiver was 2018 I want to say when Odell Beckham Jr that was his last season with the Giants so Malik neighbors I think he’s gonna crack a thousand yards I also know or also think rather that he’s going to draw a lot of attention from opposing defensive coordinators who are going to probably double him up but you know we saw some of that in the springtime where where guys were you know doubling him up with umbrella coverage and everything like that and he was beating it now the one concern I have about Malik neighbors is how well is he going to handle press coverage that’s what I need to see in training camp and in these preseason games how well does he handle press coverage if he can handle that I think uh he a thousand yards plus should be no problem for him if he struggles against that and a opposing defensive coordinators kind of see that then it could potentially be a long year for Malik neighbors he may fall short of that goal but I do think that this young man is going to be the first thousand yard receiver on this team since Odell Beckham Jr in 2018 all right Tyler nubin let’s talk about him the safety second round draft pick nubin I think everybody has him automatically penciled in to replace saier mckenny and he might very well do that at some point will he do that to start the season I’m not getting that feeling all right in the pre in the spring nuben believe it or not was was rotating in with uh Dane belon and uh Jaylen Mills and you know other guys that were playing safety and then also don’t forget you know Isaiah Simmons is GNA probably do some s you know play some safety work as well to where you know now there becomes a question mark as to whether you know they have truly have two safeties on the field or do they take one off so nuben I think nuben um is going to maybe be part of a rotation that there might be a specific you know package of uh Personnel situations where he’s going to be be a part of it um a package of you know well whether it’s on first down second down or whatever um I don’t know if he’s necessarily going to be the St coming out of the gate all right I do think by Year’s End he will be the starter because I think if I’m not mistaken Isaiah uh Simmons is only signed for one year and that’s you know again they’re going to give him that ability to beef up the run which was a problem last year for the Giants as well as give them somebody who has the athleticism in coverage but I do think nuan’s going to have a decent sized role on this defense whether it’s as a starter like McKinny was and mcken did you know so much for the Giants defense had so many different roles I don’t think that’s going to be the case this year okay I didn’t project stats for nuben by the way I’m just kind of projecting you know what I think his role is going to be in this defense all right Andrew Phillips the slot cornerback um I think he’s going to share reps in the slot uh the guy is 5’11 190 pounds plays bigger than his size but here’s the thing do you want him up against the bigger slot receivers and potentially tight ends that teams put in the slot that remains to be seen I think I do think Phillips um will be part of a committee for the slot quarterback spot now last year Cordell flat was the primary um Corner uh slot quarterback he played the most snaps in the slot I could see Phillips you know matching that as far as being the guy that they go to most often in the slot but there’s going to be times when I think they’re going to probably want a bigger guy especially if they put you know the opponent puts a bigger guy in the slot against um Andrew Phillips but look Phillips is very physical you know the fact that he’s 511 190 that’s not small per se um you know darn Holmes was a perfect example of a guy who played bigger than his size and oh by the way Dar darn Holmes is still on the roster so he is someone who I think we’ll we’ll certainly see a few uh snaps in the slot so the idea is is just as you want to have a uh you want to have options as at slot receiver you know have a short quick guy a tall physical guy you also want to have options as slot corner to match up against such guys you know different sizes different shapes and all that stuff so that you’re not you know at a disadvantage so that’s what I think is going to happen with uh Andrew Phillips obviously I think he’s also gonna maybe see some snaps on special teams so we’ll see about that but um I’m really curious to see what he brings to the table as a slot receiver all right coming up next we’re going to do the bottom three draft uh picks from the Giants 2024 class so don’t go anywhere this episode is sponsored by better help do you ever find yourself comparing your life to those you see on social media comparison is the thief of joy and I’m your host Patricia Traina and we’re getting you ready for training camp the rookies report later this week all right the media is not going to be allowed in so we’re not going to be able to see anything quite honestly all they’re going to do is they’re going to have like orientation sessions and stuff like that they’re not really going to practice or do any you know onfield work that’s going to happen July 24th will be the first practice um the te the rest of the team reporting on July 23rd so the 24th is the first practice and uh we have a lot to get through still you know we’ve got another couple of um Hard Knocks episodes coming up that we have to break down and of course you know the next episode will be on Tuesday so I’ll have a summary for you as well as my takeaways on that um I’m going to have I hope I should have a guest for you this week um well tell you who it is but I’m working to get a guest for you this is somebody I think you know should be kind of interesting he’s never been on the show before but I try and mix things up and bring different guests and different perspectives on for you and then Ed Valentine and I are planning to do a show at some point I’m not sure if it’s going to be this week or next week but we’re going to do a show to kind of get you ready uh for the start of training camp because it is almost here and it’s about time because I don’t know about you folks but I’m tired of all the the rankings and and the put Downs of the Giants and and all that stuff I mean let’s talk about something new and we’re going to finally have new stuff to talk about the practice reports we’re going to have player interviews updates all kinds of cool stuff so new material is coming yay uh and we of course will bring it all to you here on the mon on Giants podcast all right let’s get to segment three here we did the first three giant strap picks what are the expectations let’s do the bottom three and we will start off with tight end Theo Johnson all right now thanks to the retirement of Darren Waller Theo Johnson will probably be tied into to on this team no surprise there I mean it’s GNA take a major upset for that not to happen I have Theo Johnson down for 30 receptions and about 450 yards this year I do think that the Giants are going to Target Daniel Bellinger a little bit more in the passing game amongst the tight ends but here’s the thing folks I think given the Improvement or the upgrades at receiver I question how much the tight ends will actually be involved in the passing game as receivers because Bellinger very good receiver um but yards after the catch not really his Forte same thing with Theo Johnson good receiver even though you know you didn’t really see it at at Penn State because of how they ran the offense yards after the catch really not his Forte so I think you know you you look at um the past targets that they gave to Darren Waller when he was here and he was healthy he was more athletic able to pick up yards after the catch I’m thinking that th some of those pass targets that Waller got last year will be divided up between the receiving the receivers and possibly guys like Tyrone Tracy Jr who I’m going to talk about in a moment so the tight ends also you know with Theo Johnson the guy should be able to block but I’m curious to see how the Giants play it out with the tight ends you know do they ask Daniel Bellinger to do more blocking you know it’s something he kind of fell off on a little bit last year um do they ask Theo Johnson to do more do they mix it up so I’m curious to see really how much 12 personnel which is one running back two tight ends the Giants play I wouldn’t be totally shocked if the Giants play more with two running backs on the field and maybe one tight end moving forward at least to start this year so we’ll have to see if I’m right there but just just a a while guess on my part based on some of what I saw during the Spring and some of the things they were trying out remember the spring is a time to experiment it doesn’t mean that what they do or all of what they do in the springtime is what they’re going to necess necessarily do in the summer and also the preseason and into the season all right Tyrone Tracy I would not be surprised folks if he becomes rb2 over Eric gray and here’s why this is not necessarily you know a diss on Eric gray who I think is going to make this roster but Tyrone Tracy’s ability as a converted wide receiver I think will do him serve him very well as the potential pass catcher out of the back field now all the running backs can do it Devin single ter can do that Tracy can do it I think Eric gray has experienced doing it but Tyrone Tracy is probably the more polished of the two after uh Devin single ter so I just would not be totally surprised if Tyrone Tracy emerges as rb2 behind Devon single ter I want to stress that you know the Giants running game will be a committee you know Devon single ter is expected to be the lead guy in the committee and then you know they’ll have an rb2 who I think will be Tracy and you know rb3 you know will that be gray will it be maybe one of these uh guys that they picked up Jacob Sailors or uh just um Justa Corbin or U Dante Miller we’ll see I could see them potentially keeping a fourth running back but that fourth running back might be more for special teams so we’ll have to see how that competition plays out you really didn’t get to see that as much in the spring because you know they didn’t have the pads on so you don’t really see a whole lot of running plays in the springtime but you will see them this Summer once the pads go on so remember there’s a five-day acclamation period before the pads can go on and the guys can start hitting all right the last player of the draft class linebacker Darius moo now you know on the surface you would say okay this kid special teams for dep I don’t know if there’s going to be room for him on the 53 man roster this is not a knock against him obviously you show up and you compete I get that but right now you know you look at the depth at inside linebacker you got O’er you got mcfaden you got Isaiah Simmons okay can masasu maybe be that fourth guy possibly but he’s got to beat out Daren beavers and Matthew Adams and beavers and Adams by the way and Carter Coughlin who I didn’t mention all special teams guys all right so there’s a lot of layers that I think Darius maaso has to get through in order for 53 man roster spot now injuries will will obviously help him if the if the guys in front of him are banged up and can’t go performance you know if the kid comes in and and just totally you know knock some heads around and whatnot that will help him but I just think looking at the depth chart as it stands right now as I record this I think it might be more for the practice squad for Darius moas so I think you know making the 53 might be a little you know an uphill battle for him not impossible but an uphill battle but we will see obviously so that will do it for this edition of the locked on Giants podcast again thank you for spending part of your day with us here thank you for tuning in and make sure you keep it here all week long because again we are back from vacation five episodes a week we will uh do some more coverage I’ll have some more topics for you as we get you ready for the start of training camp so folks thank you for tuning in to the lockon Jones podcast and I’ll catch you tomorrow [Music]

  1. If Jones replicates 2022 does he get extended to 2026? As I recall, the 2022 offense was structured around Daniel’s weaknesses, and relied heavily on both Saquon’s production and designed QB runs. Is the ceiling of this storied franchise now going to be the upper end of the middle of the pack?

  2. I think the Giants will trade Daniel Jones along with Wan’Dale Robinson to the Steelers for Minkah Fitzpatrick, Larry Ogunjobi, 2025 2nd- and 3rd-rounders, and 2026 2nd- and 4th-rounders if the Steelers cut Justin Fields, so Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback for the Giants in the upcoming season with Drew Lock as his backup.

  3. People act like he had a great year in 2022. He was average in 2022. To speak of him as though he was an elite QB that year because he had career highs. Those highs are not the highs that would have put him in the upper 10% of QB’s that year. He had an average year and frankly for the money they gave him, where he has the 4th highest cap hit this year, is not acceptable.
To me, if he has a year that comes close to 2022 I’m still looking for an upgrade at QB. He needs to put up a 70% completion rate, 3,800 – 4,200 yards, 22 TD’s, and single digit INT’s. Also we need wins too.

  4. Jones has always been challenged to put points on the board. He is not the worst NFL QB, but he will NEVER be an elite QB. His greatest asset as a Giant has never been his arm, but his running ability. However, when protection breaks-down, instead of looking down-field to make a play, Jones either dumped the ball off to Barkley out of the backfield or ran. His completion % was higher in 2022, but his average pass was under 7 yards and he threw a paltry 15 TD's which just doesn't get it done in the current NFL.
