never going to be solved fully but I think I’m up to the task of trying to bring some good players over here hello and welcome to the best night of the year one of our favorite nights the third annual fish on first MLB draft stream as you can see we have a packed house for you guys watching tonight as always we are presented by burger and Hicks you can check them out at Burger and Hicks Instagram their their telephone number everything will have it down below quickly let me introduce every everyone before we get to the breaking news pick that just came out from the Nationals I’m your host Danny Rodriguez we have Ken bad Eli Suman Isa aut Alex Carver Alex kutek Lewis ad wiise Nate kmer we have joining us Shan McCormack we might have Ian Smith joining us later and all the way in Arlington at the draft we have Hector Rodriguez who will be joining us later with the pick from the Marlins but first let’s talk about the pick that just happened we were all cheering before it hear announc watching the sces Siver King going to the Washington Nationals utility player whoever wants to start it off whoever wants to talk about Siver King I don’t even know if Eli has a screenshot from that from us celebrating it this was a player that the morins looked like it was going to be selected to him a lot of the mocks either had cam Smith or Siver King going to the Marlins but now sver King gets selected 10th overall to the Washington Nationals Uh Kevin I want you to talk to me about this pick just talk to me about your feelings and what this means for the Marlins I mean I think you kind of said it best we we all started celebrating when we saw that the Marlin that the Nationals took Siver King you know he the numbers obviously look really nice but it’s just some of the tools that we weren’t really convinced with there’s no clear home defensively there for him doesn’t walk a lot swings outside the Zone uh so I mean it just you know kind of glad that the marls didn’t go with that type of a profile which is very I guess it’s it’s a very gr profile you really don’t know where you’re going to get out of him so you know then there’s the names like benj and cam Smith that are currently still on the board and those would make far more sense for Miami so glad that you know he was taken so the morons don’t have to take them themselves with a 16th pick so yeah we’re pretty we’re pretty happy with uh yeah well I’ll pump the braks a little bit you know I was I would have been depending on the exact money involved get King like I had been valued a little bit lower than cam Smith but I don’t think he’s necessarily GNA be a bad player I think um aesthetically uh he gets kind of a tough rap um because he’s not he’s not as the same physical specimen as a lot of the other guys the other college bats available here at the same time there are like present tools that are really exciting like he hits the ball about as hard as anybody when he fully barrels it up and uh you just the general athleticism there and at least the chance to stick at Short Stop it would have been hard to find it is going to be especially hard to find now anybody at 16 that sticks at any of the up the- middle positions except for maybe catcher as we can get into let me interrupt really quickly Eli the next pick the Detroit Tigers selecting another short stop a pre Short Stop Bryce rer with the 11th pick okay we got to remember to use this music that we had oh no and with the 11th pick in a 2024 MLB draft Detroit Tiger select Bryce rer Short Stop [Music] prep another prep shortstop goes back toback Short Stops but again let’s continue talking about Siver king um Nate joining us I want you to talk to us about Siver King and maybe could this mean Camp Smith to Miami oh we got there’s couple more pits if you have before we can start like El both mentioned under size I mean like I mean if the Marlin were giving them you know under slot I would be fine with it but just not the power bat really not I don’t think he’s going to stick up the middle either um not that really means much but he did originally go D2 out of high school went to wind gate where he did do good but even at like you know he kind of struggled had their hit on it well in his um in his recap of what C does he didn’t really translate you know like crazy well um especially starting in the ACC a very tough conference so I think is going to be all right for the Nationals but I’m H to say the least I’m happy that the Bruns are not going to be taken tonight but um you know we’ll see if uh they’re fortunate enough to get Cam Smith to slide all the way to 16 but even if not there’s a you know plenty of good bats on the board you know prep and college so well just wa so I want to hear from Sean early on because he went through a couple versions of mock draft through the first like 40 picks in here 39 picks so how just give us a rundown of how differently this is going compared to what you may have expected uh think it’s a big shock I think first is Burns huge shock going at two I think most people probably expected like con then or a bat u i mean it’s still a good pick I think Burns for me was my second ranked uh pitcher behind higen Smith but it’s still a good pick I think Nicks Kurt Nick kurs was a surprising pick especially considering that they took him over kags both play the same position but other than that I mean obviously there my my mock has been kind of destroyed but it’s okay uh I think a for me a surprising pick I guess it’s not surprising because it’s the angels and I’m not sure they have an analytical department or anything uh but they taking Christian Moore there is um interesting to say the least that’s not a guy I would have taken you see they’re going to 20 to the Blue Jays but other than that I think everything’s been pretty good I actually kind of like the sier king pick for the gats I think he can play a lot of utility and the gats are they’re doing better and I don’t think they’ll be picking at 10 maybe like 15 16 in the next few years so they get a guy that can get FASTT tracked to the MLB and uh maybe play shortstop because CJ Abrams is not a great defender so I actually think that pick is is fine yeah they’ll definitely be saving money as well for for that one um but for for everyone for all you guys how do you how do you think the get the draft is going uh so far any surprises you guys see or do you guys see it mainly as chalk so far how do you like it so far at Arlington I I think Sean sort of touched on it pretty well the the big shock being number two Chase Burns going to the Cincinnati Reds they got louder last year but I do want to ask Sean something in his mock he had um he had excuse my pronunciation but he had B going to Miami what was it the fit have you heard something or what was it me Isaac we’ll get to that Eli can we get the music all right and the 12th pick in the 2024 MLB draft the Boston Red Sox select Braden Montgomery out finally yeah he fell that’s a great pick yeah that’s a good pick that’s a good pick um but yeah with the Marlins selecting Bene your thoughts on that uh for me benj is just one of a guy I’m really high on personally I think you you look at his data it’s a top of all the baseball he’s actually the number one ranked um College bat in terms of exit velocity Hees doesn’t chase a lot he has great in zone contact rates and he’s probably a guy that we could either slot or under slaught uh I don’t know if there’s any Merit to behind that if the the Marlins are interested in him but it’s just a guy I personally was pretty high on and that’s who I would take if he’s available I would take him over cam Smith I know that might not be a popular opinion but I just I also just think his defensive versatility in the Outfield will be better than Ken Smith’s ability to play Third too I agree I I don’t I don’t know I don’t like I I agreee with you on the bat the bat I definitely agree and it’s a lefty hitter so you like that um this is by far I think a better bat right now than cam Smith but I don’t know about defensive versatility I watch film with him in center field and it doesn’t look that good so I think it’s a corner guy yeah is I think he’s a corner guy though you can put in right field he’s a plus plus armor he is coming off of Tommy John but he doesn’t have experience of being on the mound so he has an arm yeah uh I don’t know I guess you could say defensively they’re they’re maybe on par but I like his Bat more so I would take I like the bat I like bat I definitely agree exactly yeah Lefty bat that advanced is very good so I I like this guy’s bat over Smith but overall athleticism plus the injury history like you said I don’t know about I don’t know I don’t I don’t know who has like higher ceiling but I do like the bat more avenge I think I think the outfielder definitely has the higher ceiling cams it’s like James Nelson type I don’t like him that much James Nelson that’s not a name W damn if he gets C to James Nelson when he gets picked I’ll literally like just there is a point where James Nelson was a pretty high Prospect at some point he was traded the Yankees I think um but no not I don’t want gam SMI is obviously very that would be a very for Miami as well but I was echoing the same thoughts that Sean was saying right now in our group chat I if the two of them are on the board I would go with the outfielder but from what we understand it looks like that if Cam Smith is there available regardless of who else is is I it seems like that’s the guy so you know make do with that what you will but it seems to be the choice for Miami it was him him or Stephen King maybe and you know either pick would be in my opinion pretty good Smith or or benj I mean they both have their certain things and I you can’t go wrong with either or I mean so we’ve talked sorry Kevin we’ve talked about how they could not screw it up by picking either one of these guys how could because it’s the Orleans we have to talk about this how could screw this up like what could they do to screw it up at this point if they take a picture I think not a single one of us in this panel will be very happy that’s that screenshot when the pck comes in will be a lot of mad [Music] reactions I will I will say I think it is a very very deep and good high school pitching class but yeah we definitely shouldn’t allocate our first round pick to a pitcher considering what our farm looks like yeah guys like cam kitti William smid are some of the P top pitchers left you also have Trey yovich that uh Carver mentioned so I it’s really topheavy in terms of college really quickly I want to acknowledge this guy on Twitter who follows us Marlin’s G gbo he has been replying to every fof tweet the last couple days by saying Christian Moore Christian Moore and I’m sorry to inform you if you have not already learned he has been drafted he’s off the board went to the angels at number eight he is not an option for anymore I am sorry to to answer your question Carver you want to know how they can screw this one up if if I hear the name Tommy White at 16 I’m gonna be very upset that is the guy yes sir yeah yeah oh man yeah I mean don’t knock on this guy we don’t know it would be cheap it would be excuse me pardon guys Eli can we get the music hold on I think Kevin will like this one okay with the 13th pick in the 2024 MLB draft the San Francisco Giants like James tibs out wow good pick D to be falling a little bit yeah he’s if he fell if he fell to Miami that would have been that would have been a slam dung pick right there but ACC player of the year I mean I believe he was on Hector’s um board as well I believe is the number three player on the board so definitely that could have fell to Miami and uh yeah they’re really trying to snap that streak of a no 30 Homer season since Barry Bonds cuz he’s a power for first guy right I think he hits for a bunch of power they say de bat First Defense second so uh yeah 55 Power 60 hit it’s just run is 40 field 50 so really all his value is with his Bat 100% but you know the bat is pretty impressive it’s pretty tantalizing another left-handed bat not huge 6 foot 200 pounds but I would have he was someone that I liked if he fell but it wasn’t like Hector told us unlikely that he would fall and now with with that pick I mean one of Honey cut Wald Schmidt um cam Smith and um benj will be on the board for Miami so I mean they’re G have they’ll have their they have their choice which sty they want if you know how else they can screw this up they pick honey cut exact thank you I’m glad that you mentioned it because I yeah like just Tommy White and then Honeycut would be the two guys like in that order that you that I would not want in this case now at the request of several commenters I think we should wait to announce pcks until Manford is actually walking to the stage there yeah because several people are saying that they don’t wanten is a little bit behind the mov Network so yeah this is the read they come here to watch the drave you don’t have to watch it on MLB or ESPN watch it with us and we’ll give you exclusive picks that you won’t have to see over there and you can already hear all the the analysis of that pick Let’s get a let’s get a Press Box Report with Hector unless listen to Harold Reynolds talk about nonsense I’d recommend staying here talk about Brandon Phillips we want Hector let’s bring him in yeah we can hear a little bit I want to hear about Hector exclusive freshbox report yeah anybody that is not aware we do have onsight coverage for the first time ever from Major League Baseball draft in Hector Rodriguez so you can follow him at uh Hector baseball if you aren’t ready for his updates throughout the night we do remind people that so this stream is going to be just about an hour hour until 9:00 p.m. but there are going to be two other Marlins picks tonight even after 16 at number 55 overall and number 70 overall in the second round and then competitive balance round B and I think Carver you’ll be live on spaces for that correct yeah plan to go live like probably just after the second pick is made to react to that and then lead into the CB pick the competitive balance round pick Let’s see if we can uh bring in Hector see if he’s there with us if not Hector are you there what’s up guys how how can you hear me oh we hear we hear the music but we hear you talk to us how are the Vibes how’s everything um today is just great um wait hold Onan actually gonna make the pick let me hold on one second it’s a Giants one right yeah yeah should be James tibs going watch Daniel give us false information watch it be cam Smith honestly I’d be very intrigued I hope Honeycut and cam Smith are off the board so they go with bench all right so there it is tis go 13 as you guys already said he’s going to San Francisco Giants not a not a big surprise honestly I’m surprised that he was actually still available proba they thought he could have gone to number 10 in Washington but they ended up surprising a lot of people with C King I don’t think anybody had cver going past the 15 pick so obviously a lot of surprises at this draft and you know morning are two away making selection and the Chicago Cubs are team that could be a threat toi Florida State Hector from what you know just because you’re were talking about St King like how much of a re in your opinion I know you do you’ve done a lot a ton of work on this draft like you do every year awesome I’m so glad that you’re there but it’s so welld deserved that you should be you’re the guy that should be there for the first time for this outlet and I’m glad that you’re there but anyways I wanted to ask about that pick how much of a reach is that for the Nationals to pick B King there who you don’t know if he’s going to stick at shortstop it’s not really a bat heavy guy how much oh oh the the 14th cck just came in from from me I don’t know if you guys want making our way not yet not it’s a big one Danel text us to pick whoever’s talking sounds hot what’s saying what are the comments the comments want to hear the pick he said say it someone’s saying say it yeah 14th pick the Cub select cam Smith and I know just mentioned the Cubs to look at and that’s exactly what happen yep so obviously this changes my board a little bit by top three they’ll High L high school signau so you can you know use that extra money later on in Theft probably later name so for the Marlin ended up not having any of players available one to keep an eye on is Johnson short out of Alabama the last draft profile I did you know he’s a guy that good pipeline’s number 48 62 180b left probably a guy that could stick after the next LEL but we’ll see if he does throw in his frame he’ll most likely push him over to Third Base because he does have a good arm we’re gonna mute Hector because we could we could just hear him good enough to mention the sleeper of prep shortstop Carter Johnson as a possibility here who would be that that’d be a cost savings measure but also one of the better prep position players still on the board and you know really what a draft it doesn’t have a ton of guys that have really great upside on the prep side that are actually going to be signable so we’ll see if that comes to fruition that is a name that several of the mocks had mentioned in passing because is he gonna fall all the way to 56 probably not unless there’s a deal ahead of time where they’re they it’s clear that the Marl are gonna get get him the most money maybe but you never that’s a big risk to potentially let him fall all the way so that’s going to be in play and Ryan wal from Kentucky that’s a name that also was kind of whispered around and certainly he was not as high priority as king or Cam Smith but at this point if you go with a college bat I think Ryan wmid would be in play then but Carson B is still out there isn’t he yeah I I think I think what you’re saying makes sense in in terms of like there’s not too much in terms of high school bats like first round talent I don’t think but I think what they what they what they could do and what they should do is go back College bat you you need the best possible hit tool at this point to build around at this point in your rebuild it is very early you need a bat a proven bat you have to go College bat I think benj is the guy honestly now with um with uh with two guys gone so I think it’s Ben and then maybe you undercut High School in the second round uh obviously you always overpay for high school but maybe if you undercut get a third rounder in the second round you can give him a little less money and you’re fine so um I think that’s that’s the they should go yeah I I think um I think the best case here to go College bat and then take short stop second round High School short stop and you look at the history of the Rays and also the marriage with frankly Frankie pire it’s a lot of high school shortstop history in the past recent years in the first and second round so I think that’s some that’s in my opinion that’s what they should do so it looks like the morins are on the clock per my source the Mariners have just made their selection okay um nothing to worry about for the morans um they select right-handed and left-handed pitcher dangelo from Mississippi State yeah cover one less pitcher for the Marlins to be able to select so here we go College next time you hear from me will be for the Marlins pick yeah I thought that guy was for sure a ray So based on the guys left on the board I think we want to do a prediction time now who we think the pick is actually going to be we have our little background here that versus draft Yeah so and also in the chat we a loud Miami fan we have recent Marlins early round picks Kemp Alderman and Jacob Barry autograph cards from the lmf goodness massive collection and so you guys you can put in the chat your prediction for who the Marlins are going to get right here and uh first two people that get it right once they reveal the pick we will send you your choice of a alderman or or Barry these great cards from lmf so uh yeah now that we uh know who’s still left on the board of these remaining picks can um yeah we could just go one by one about who we think I’m nervous all right number 16 overall let me just get the Time background music that we gonna be during our series pre 50k strike out strike all right to get that music going little preing time um I’ll start things off why not I I’ll start things off no inside source I don’t have anything for this I’m gonna go with Carson Beng alfer from Oklahoma State I think they’re going to go in that route with their selection Kevin I unfortunately think that the Marlin will be taking Carter Johnson with their pick kind of what um was mentioned by Shawn and and Carver rays and Mariners really love taking those high school players Isaac let’s go with Carson Beng as well I think Miami gon make the smart decision here Sean I’m going Carson benj here someone I’ve been banging the table for for a while now so let I hope they take him Mr Alex Harver as I said you need the best proven bat left in the draft that’s Carson BJ the Marlins do the smart thing they got Carson Ben right here one Alex to another Alex crck yeah Carson Ben is the best player available Nate I got faith in B Bon Co I think they’re GNA take vure Smart Pick Lefty bat he’s GNA do a lot for the mar bench and now I think making his first prediction time ever Mr Lewis uh yeah they need position players in that minor league system I’m going to go Carson Bene hopefully they don’t pull a uh 2023 Eli just to be difference I’ll go with Ryan Walid as Marlin’s pick with number 16 overall and last and certainly not least at the draft Hector if you can hear us who what’s your prediction yeah did you guys hear me well perfect yeah okay so for me I’m gonna with they gonna goo guy I think it’s gonna be I seen a couple cash I doubt W SJ from South Carolina orando is actually kid that I did a profile on a while ago big upside here um Big Time tools actually number one rated high school player the perf game I’m going to stop you for two seconds Eli can we get the music well what’s what’s the situation this would give the best reaction possible me saying this I feel like it is best reaction that we will get or maybe the worst all right wait for the music oh hold on so the pick is in overall Daniel Rodriguez oh hold on I need to make it much louder for everybody here and let the anticipation build the first draft of Bendix Frankie P era don’t look at your screens anybody don’t look look at me look at your computer screen and with the 16th overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft the Miami Marlin select PJ morlando what high school PJ morlando who is the 43d ranked Prospect in ml what are they doing he is a 19-year-old outfielder out of South Carolina here’s the quick um scouting grades on him 55 hit 50 power 45 run 50 arm 50 field 50 overall funny enough Hector just mentioned PJ morlando he even did a little report on him but they are staying they did get a batter but they want their prep batters in PJ morlando look anytime you go 27 slots uh below where a guy is you gotta do it but what if he wasn’t there later on um I want to hear from Sean I’m sure you do not have this on your mock but talk to us a little bit about PJ uh I know he’s a big kid he’s an outfielder I know he also spent some time at catcher too there is a bad Omen about taking 19yearold high school players that’s not SE as something that that teams like to do so that’s interesting That’s Unique uh I had him going to the Phillies I think they’re I think they’re picking 28 or something yeah that’s um that’s interesting that’s not not expect that interesting well so the Marlins go backto back prep players in their draft I know different front offices but I feel this front office maybe see saw prep Nate you have the biggest reaction look there talk to us if you know anything about PJ and maybe your thoughts on what this means from the front office in selecting a prep batter I mean we said that they could go pre and they pulled the trigger I mean you I mean I don’t want I mean I’m not happy about it but you take a look at his perfect game profile he is the number one player in all of America according to perfect game for what it’s worth I mean you know I know I’ve heard of him in the past I know he has a lot of power but I mean like you said not overall do not read his MLB pipeline little bio um it says track record of Performing against top competition his stock dropped this spring I met questions about his power and athleticism and the most and the funniest part is the last line making it unlikely that he’ll go in the first round as once projected that to yeah I mean also want his perfect game profile it says that he hit 5506 of the last year’s wwba which is the biggest col High School talent on the travel ciruit so I mean I know he does hit against big competition he’s known for you know showing up on the big stage but Ben was right there that’s all I’m gonna say he was right there we’re always having conversations and it’s his birthday so happy birthday also to PJ who just fresly turned 19 today we just gave him the worst birthday present ever with our reaction happy birthday PJ um he was Gatorade South Carolina prep player of the year does that do anything for you guys no okay congrat I hope you I hope you like AJ Puck so I I have here the actually the Texas Rangers nation that uh a whole profile on PJ morlando just dropped yesterday so I’ll read a little bit on that of what they say about him left-handed hitting right-handed throwing um Big Time power again you mentioned in him winning a all those Awards um he’s walked intentionally I believe it said the most in the nation as well uh produced power and it just seems he’s the big guy just a big bat really um but also they also have him has as a baton guy with his arm and speed likely limiting him to either first base or left field defensively Jacob Barry in high school what is this this is this is this is likely the worst they could have done um this is pretty bad um I mean even a highrisk high reward guy just looking no it’s not even high reward it’s high risk with no reward it’s not it’s not high reward the what’s the reward that he plays DH and hits home runs that that’s the reward he’s a 50 like an average big leager they drafted Gary Cooper they needed the best bat there’s one that’s sitting in front of them that’s a clear pick and they go off the- wall uh first round pick I’m gonna draft off G again from this nation for it says morlando very interesting case he could fail to actualize game power as a pro if he doesn’t hit for power he does nothing power in high school so it’s very case that’s for sure yeah if he if if this guy doesn’t hit for power he does zero for the team well car not only that but also the the the talk of his questionable athleticism so in other words is this another guy that may not even be able to play center field he could be a yes he Corner outfielder yeah Corner guy they first base cian Jes Sanchez look you know the you know the old baseball adage you can never have too many left fielders yes Daniel I what do you think this means from the front office and and you know their perception what they want to do with the Marlins and now they take yeah better I was always I know that they were linked to a couple of college guys but we couldn’t have been so surprised had they gone in high school they see what their window is they want to get the number one overall pick next year they want to get the number one overall pick the following year they don’t plan on being competitive look at the guys they’re targeting in trades the main guy they got on their rise trade 19 years old he’s a few years away from being big league ready I can’t say that I’m surprised they go high school here because you know this isn’t 2019 where they’re trying to expedite a rebuild here no they’re in this for the Long Haul they’re gonna make this a very a very lengthy process and yeah that’s right up his alley going to be a long development for this player I think he has a [ __ ] ton of Potential from what I understand so far but yeah we all shouldn’t be so surprised that they went with some for lack of a better term some 19y old capital I am I am surprised that they go high school they’re going to they’re going to Care they don’t want a they don’t want a college guy that’s gonna be ready in two years okay what does that do for the rest of this draft they have two more picks tonight and then they have the rest of the draft to go what does that do for money you’re gonna overpay I would say you’re right yeah but this guy I don’t think so because the him so high they might not have to I don’t know I don’t think it’s that much of an undercut I don’t think it’s that much of an undercut he still I think this is very reminiscent to what the Rays did last year in taking Xavier Isaac I mean they took just a complete shot in the dark and and it it’s worked out so far for them so we’ll see this I this was a pick I believe that they made assuming that they’re going to get a lot better volue in the later rounds and this is gonna be anau at the end unders slaught is that what you said I think it will I don’t think so I don’t think Carver Carver there are a few things I know for sure about draft stuff I am certain 100% certain this guy’s not getting $4.7 million to sign so how how far under do you think this is gonna go we can I think I think go in the in the three no you think he was he’s not supposed to be a first round pick they’re talking about him right now and they’re hesitant because he only hit two home runs in high school last year um again they mentioned that he was the amount of High School home runs as he did great it just seems like they’re hesitant on the bat and they they say they’re basically uh you’re batting you’re you’re drafting the bat it’s the defense is just left fielder why did we draft Harrison Bader his 6y it says he r a 7sec 6y i mean that’s like if you’re running that if you’re running that type of speed you gotta you got to be certain about the B dude he looks like body he looks like DJ lameu so none of us had him at all if they wanted to a prep position players Slade pawell was right on the board he’s I think almost 15 slots ahead of um what’s it called Orlando on the the FID board so it’s justay Payne just went to the Brewers alfer another prep guy so back to back Ben okay Mak feel a little better that Ben isn’t getting chosen that is good and what I want to add about the high school part I think their second and third round picks will be high school players okay so now I want to pause here just because Hector on site in that uh wherever the draft is taking place to the video of the moment where PJ morlando became a marlin so in case anybody um wasn’t watching live and you want to hear what it was like inside the building for this historic moment here it is Commission of the 2024 MLB draft in Miami Marlins select PJ morlando an outfielder from Somerville High School Somerville South Carolina the Milwaukee Brewers at the next [Music] pick the one shaking her boobs no it’s not even that she’s wearing the old logo is that plant she had she had vll Bran’s bucket hat on too as you can see in front of Hector the C barbecue boys with a big grin so I do want to State just more eloquently this is a reason why following the subsequent picks of the draft are important and especially this is like the classic example of first round draft is not going to tell the whole story of this Marlin draft class absolutely they made a decision here in Minds with other guys that they’re going to be picking later on in this draft they are reminds I think this is a guy that even Hector mentions uh early on in the draft process is somebody that could be in the range of the Marlins and as we’ve discussed his stock plum just in the last few months could it be a case where the industry is overreacting to somebody that’s had a few bad months as a teenager despite his stock being so high not that long ago maybe but I think it is a calculation is an understanding that they have 10 and a half million dollars and you can actually spend it’ll be right around 11 million the Marlins can spend on their picks in the first 10 Rounds without incurring future penalties on this and how they spend most of that money is not going to go to Orlando it’s going to be spread around and they two more picks even tonight number 56 and number 70 that could guys that might get even comparable money when it’s all said done but we’ll just have to watch it play out um yeah either way this is uh yeah it’s unusual it’s been a long time since the top pick that the Marin got here was somebody that you know is uh All Things Considered not your classic first round draft pick type of guy but that’s also part of making the postseason the year before and it’s a function of this draft class itself that um you we talked about going into this so I yeah I was I tried to kind of have people not laser focus so much on the number 16 pick on its own there is a there’s gonna be a lot more to this draft than this but yeah we’re just a few minutes away from hearing from bck and from Frankie about what went into this really surprising decision funny sorry Kevin I’m just gonna the 18th pick um the the Rays go with Theo Gillan another prep guy shortstop out Fielder so it seems like most teams AR in a run with the prep players right now and and that’s kind of what I wanted to kind of touch on because I know Isaac mentioned maybe the next two pick are high school I mean you’re kind of starting to see a little run of high school players here that may probably not you know those are probably guys who could have gone in that compound or even the second round so maybe you do see a college bat here you know with that Marlin’s next pick maybe even a pitcher which I wouldn’t surprise me at all I know there’s been talks of even a potential pitcher going with with one of those other two picks High School guys so we’ll see I mean they they’re definitely doing this pick for a reason because they definitely feel like there’s a guy that’s out there in that second round of the draft that they feel very high that will fall to them and they probably even have a deal in place already yeah W with um the last two picks the Brewers when taking brayan pay um right now he’s ranked I believe the 53rd um total Prospect in pipeline in Theo Gillan 28 so it seems like a lot of guys they’re I don’t want to say overdrafting but just drafting these prep hitters who are R ranked lower and maybe saving up for later on in the draft uh Carver how do you like this approach for the Marlins um going younger going a a very young prep hitter and seeing what this can mean for the rest of the draft no it’s terrible this is a terrible approach for this team to take it’s like I said they needed to get the best most polished bat to build around and like Isaac said they are this guy may not ever turn into very much at all um it’s one tool it’s power it’s pull only Power and right now it’s raw power not game Power so it’s it’s very it’s very interesting very I I don’t think it’s a smart pick I think it’s a bad decision um but hey time will tell and honestly what Eli says is right is that the draft is more is about more than one pick and what I had said before is I really don’t think I think it’ll be less than slot but I don’t think it’ll be as severe of of an undercut as you guys are thinking so I you still have to take away from college commitment to a prestigious College um so I I really don’t think it’s going to be that much less than slot value slightly less yes but I don’t think it’s gon to be that much less yeah when we were reacting to the noble pick last year the thinking was wow uh this is going to be way UND slot as well and it was like half a million below so um in this case this is really this is even a more extreme version than that where the separation between actual Prospect evaluation versus draft slot is so I think it’s going to be at least a million dollars under slot but you know that’s just I didn’t do ton of homework on on this at this stage um this is the guy that yeah you wonder would he actually be available at number 56 if they had waited that long I there was a possibility but they must be totally in love with the bat it’s a little unusual coming from Peter Bendix because he’s a guy that has valued defense coming from the Tampa Bay Rays um in some their selections that they’ve made and just the prospects they’ve targeted in all sorts of transactions and this is a case where they’re punting on the defense and it’s question about how much they think they can unlock in the actual offensive production from PJ oh oh no oh my God Ben is off the board huh Ben to the Mets oh even worse the division rival can’t get better than that Ben to the Mets with the 19th pick yeah I guess I guess the you know I guess the question we could bring up is you know we’re gonna do the top 30 after this draft so Carver Eli where where do we put PJ morlando I don’t think he’s still the best position player Prospect and probably maybe even Dylan head over him I would say wow I I don’t know about that I yeah I don’t know about that one but he’s definitely not number one I’ll tell you that position player wise I think he is I think I would wow I don’t think so I don’t know Victor M you think Victor Mesa J’s better yes yes yeah so they got worse than a fourth outfielder great I as I’ll keep reiterating they got somebody with the idea in mind that they did not want to put too many of their eggs in this one basket that there were guys available that would have been that they could have I guess would have been safer and also had pretty high upside and and they go they make this pick with the subsequent picks in mind so we just gotta see how this whole night plays out right here but yeah safe to say that this was bit of a curveball yeah definitely once again you simply cannot believe the pre-draft Buzz that comes out there even though some of it is accurate about the research that these guys do it doesn’t necessarily point to who they’re going to pick even when those players are on the board there’s there’s a lot of smart people that did their poking around and you knew that Marlin were going to look closely at certain players but yeah those guys aren’t available get the pivot and then even if they are available if you do your due diligence and you look the financial aspect of it and you think um you can go off the board with and pay somebody below slap value in order to use that money later um yeah this this now even in this new Administration it’s going to be really hard to get a feel for what they’re going to do but maybe next year it’ll be easier once they’re drafting a lot earlier up and so have big bigger selection of available prospects man and you kind of ask yourself if maybe cam Smith was there would they have taken him you know that’s I think that’s the other question you ask yourself so you know may maybe they would have and they wouldn’t have taken more Lando here and they probably could have waited a little but so in his celebration video there’s a kid in a very prominent filming in a Mets Jersey so take that for what it’s worth hold on just a moment I I will share that video on here in about a minute so that our audience can see it as well I want I want to see the screenshot of this reaction because that may have been the alltime reaction from all of us I love that we ask what could be the worst pick possible before and nobody said Orlando yeah because You’ think that no one would pick like you think that they wouldn’t go so deep but that’s how crazy of a pick wasn’t anyone you better right Eli they better be saving at least a million but I I I don’t I don’t think so I really don’t who he who he committed to anyways South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina it’s not like it’s you still have to pay to take a player away from that no matter if they deserve this pick or not like you have to pay for that he he wasn’t supposed to be a first rounder so he better take whatever they give him imag he so it’s hard to sway from that not hard but you know it’s a fact yeah your Savage just got picked by the the blue J so first pict seems like a couple oh I see the video I will say on the bigboard it looks like there’s a ton of prep INF fielders middle fielders a board like on the board around the 50660 range so you know it looks if it looks like G to go the prep route I’ll give him credit at this point I mean all bets are off the table who knows so let’s just pause for a moments to see how PJ morlando reacted to the news that he is a Miami Marl ml the Miami marins select PJ [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is that an old logo hat we couldn’t really tell it looks like an old logo had had like a World Series patch yeah that was not sure which one good for him he he’s he looks pretty jacked he looks pretty tall so yeah yeah he’s a big bat big boy hey but so so did Kemp Alderman and Brock venberg so I think like I don’t want to keep like talking badly but I think like the the one thing or the M another main thing like you know it’s bad only right but the fact that like you said with the home runs last year he only hit what two and then it’s only pull like it’s so pull heavy it there’s just a long way up for this K but we’ll see yeah I want to hear from Lewis about you know what you think about the pck going prep bat where everyone seemed like oh College aren’t College bat College B College bat what do you think the philosophy the philosophy for the you know for everything they they say no pun intended but with if I had to like hypothesize I’m you know maybe part of me is thinking bendix’s looking back at prior first round drafts that the Marlin have had and a lot of their successes have been hit have been hitting High School guys Yelich Garrett Stanton so maybe the thinking is like all right well this organization has had success with prep players in the past why don’t we kind of just go that route that way if we think that this rebuild is going to be a while it’s going to be at least you know three four five years before this guy even sniffs potentially being in the big leagues but then again when you see that it’s somebody with like you know like a future 50 value is like an average big leager that’s fine but like I don’t I don’t I don’t know how I feel about saving slot money to then reallocate it to somebody who’s ranked lower on a draft board especially when it’s somebody who is largely positionist and as Carver said possesses one primary Tool uh by the way benge to the Mets I know we we said that already but you’re you’re good so it it’s that that’s maybe how I feel I think maybe the marins are just reverting to what they kind of have done in years past and trying to hit on that same form again after maybe failing with somebody like bade and you know now going the high school route again it also gives them the opportunity to really develop this guy how they want that’s also probably a reason why they made this pick and it’s a guy kind of like what Isaac was saying this is the type of players are going to Target now during the draft and surprisingly they’re probably G to do the same exact thing at the trade deadline when they bring these other new guys we saw what they got for a rise saw what they got in that John birdie trade so definitely different type of players that you know very very young players is what they what they want yeah well I brought Hector in just in case he wants to give his quick reaction to it I’ll try to unmute he can hear [Music] us me you’re gonna have to talk a little louder we could barely hear you how about now oh a lot better okay yeah I just got to hold the microphone but yeah what was your question you’re just your quick reaction to this surprising decision with morlando so I mean morlando was Flo as a possibility but I kind of brush it off I thought wasn’t really gonna happen I thought he’d be taken in a competitive balance or competation round pick because at the end of the day there the hit to is there and I think there is more left in the tank I’ve watched this kid swing before I love the swing I love the offensive upside but outside of that there’s really not much there I think he’s pretty limited defensively you see aser and I think the speed I think the speed’s okay but he’s also Aid that’s they’re going to ask him to add a little bit more weight to his so they can tap in a little bit more of that raw power and if that’s the case then slow him down but obviously you know they looking for H they got a guy that comfortable with guy that probably will sign a little bit small value I’m not thinking a million I’m thinking maybe half a mil or three qus of a mil you know you know we’ll see what do I think they might second take High School there’s still a lot available on the board so we’ll see what happens yeah so yeah he is he kind of closer to Carver and thinking that we’ll get we’ll get less than slot value but maybe not that much less still gonna be right yeah I it it will be less but like I said I don’t think the sacrifice that you make here by spending this pick on a such a raw bat Raw bat literally only bat it’s just not worth it you needed a home run the Marlins need everything the The Scouting team has said this the Marlins need everything and you go out and get one of the more unproven bats that likely could have signed in the competitive balance it’s just terrible I I this is a very poor direction for them to go can we show a picture of the of the reaction the amazing reaction we all had where Carver isn’t even sitting in his chair yeah his shair is vacated that’s not good our draft reactions are stuff of Legend like we always have the mar like keep on toes next will keep I think the video would be better a video of this reaction would be better than a screenshot I think I’ll grab it afterwards just to deal with some commentary on this one somebody like this yeah it’s not going to make be in the big leagues in three years from now to be clear like that is an absolute best case scenario when you take a high school player like this that already has some pres that has a lot to work on mechanically and approach wise in order to Simply show his full Talent when you make this pick you think maybe five years um is is when realistically there they could be a regular in your lineup this is a long-term play you have to be really patient right here and um but as the draft goes on this happens every year where most of the players that are going to be picked by The Marin in this draft are going to be college players just a question of how much money you allocate towards college players in this case yeah pretty significant investment in this player who um is I don’t know if you will say onedimensional but not very many dimensionals well I mean to add on to that when you I mean when he’s a power only guy at best you can really only be like in my opinion at least like a supplementary piece to a good team so in the hypothetical that when he gets to the big leagues at you know 24 25 the thought is that maybe they have some semblance of a core there combination of position players and pitchers to where he just kind of slots in and you maybe kind of just don’t expect the world of him but I when I think that and I’m coming at it from those terms I don’t really understand you know spending you know making him you know your first round pick I mean maybe there’s just some like emotional like significance to a first round pick and to think that they allocate you know you know unlap funds to that I don’t know it kind of just rubs me the wrong way but it is a very conservative kind of um kind of kind of pick overall I mentioned Mor Lando’s ability to you know improve his game when he plays um you know harder competition at the what’s it called the high school allstar game last year in Seattle he won the MVP award and that was against you know of course against all the best high schoolers in in in all the country and you know I I understand he a rough senior year but um as Kevin just said this site apparently he was intentionally walked a lot barely a chance to hit especially against the South Carolina you know high school competition so that’s something something you know just you know take not of yeah so this is this was Jeff passon just stating the obvious it’s it’s a question of how much below slot value uh Orlando goes that’s going to dictate what they can do with the rest of their picks but signability is is not a concern when when you take somebody like this it’s with an understanding that you are going to sign him so even though he has a strong College commitment y yada yada um he is going to be a Marlin and he’s going to be in the organization yeah the biggest question is how far under slot they got the guy for and I mean we can speculate but I I I hope it’s at least a mill I hope it’s at least a million dollars but I I don’t I honestly I don’t know I don’t know I mean I I don’t have that on paper I don’t think anybody does right now but it’s always tough with high school guys to get them away from these commits so I don’t know to save a million I would I I still wouldn’t be okay with the pick I still wouldn’t like the pick but it would be a little bit more acceptable especially if they get a couple overs slaught guys with their next pick we’ll see yeah to see what happens there but it seems like the the prep you know prep batch just you know flushing out the board uh um Sean what what college bats I don’t know if you have any college bats left there in the 50 range you can talk about but who are the other top guys you could potentially see fits for the Marlins in that 50 to maybe 75 range uh truth to be told I don’t love too much there’s a kid from Tennessee and outfielder uh tiers that I like um there’s a few more there’s DeBarge I believe he went to he went to a School in Louisiana he’s a short stop that I like uh there’s Griff o Griff oferrell who is a uh College shortstop that I’m not too high on him there are some guys but I do think in terms of college bats in this draft it was very topheavy and I think most of them are gone I don’t believe walid’s been drafted obiously he’s not gonna fall there but uh yeah I don’t know I’m just I’m looking at my big board right now and it’s a lot of high school a lot of high school a lot of pitchers uh not not too many uh hitters I’ll see honey Cut’s still on the board there are some catchers I like I like janic I doubt he falls to 56 but I do like wer Janik from Sam Houston if he’s there that’s a that’s a home run pick because that’s a guy I thought they they could take in the first round doubt he falls there but if he does that’s a great pick Malcolm Moore from Stanford probably not goingon to be there but another another good pick so there are some guys but probably not going to be there at 56 yeah so we should wrap this up pretty soon because we’re about to hear from the decision makers themselves and we’ll be sure to provide a full summary of what exactly Bendix and Piller were thinking and yeah what they plan to do from here but I think it’s safe to say that our consensus reaction is a little lukewarm I’m hoping yeah PJ will probably get to watch this back before beginning his pro career and it’ll serve as a yeah nothing personal against him it’s just a yeah a surprise considering who else was on the board that the Marlins went in this direction sure he’s a great guy yeah and we’ll see maybe next year um we’ll have one of the fastest draft streams in history to see what happens I believe the BS are still currently tied for the first um for the best odds in the draft with the Colorado Rockies yeah real I’ll I’ll pull that up really quickly so people can follow along because remember the top pick the top several picks in dra are now determined via Lottery um so you don’t know the exact draft order at the end of this season that gets uh determined in like December at the start of the winter meetings they do the lottery here the Marlins are very much going to be a lottery team this year which was not the case this past year and for the moment they had are tied with the Rockies for the best odds of winning the lottery and getting the number one overall pick next year they have never had the number one overall pick have they I don’t no I don’t think I think so right didn’t they uh what pick was Adrien Gonzalez he was Aon was one right Adrian Gonzalez was the last time they had the number one overall pick this is a storyline to follow the rest of the Marlins regular season I suppose how where they went the only number one overall pick they ever had I think correct yeah yeah yeah because Becket was two in 99 yeah yeah so as H as you guys alluded to the next stream for next year they’ll make the pick a lot earlier on but then we’ll spend more time afterwards reacting to it just because that’s consequential decision we think than thiser this one we’ll see what happens there um just but I that’s going to do it if anyone has anyone anything else to mention their thought on the pick what they can potentially do for before we wrap this up and hear from Mr Peter Bendix and staff uh I think Carver is gonna be on Spaces after the 56 pick so we’ll be on there reacting to that and all the way up to the 70th pick which is the last pick of day one for the Marlins so make sure to tune in to fish on the farm all right that’s going to do it for myself Daniel for Eli Kevin Alex Carver Alex crutching Nate Lewis Sean Isaac Hector in Arlington
