Macklin Celebrini Debuts At The San Jose Sharks Prospect Scrimmage
the San Jose Sharks held their annual Prospect scrimmage and The Vibes are currently off the chards you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young uh caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockdown NHL Network want to thank you for making lockdown sharks your first listen probably part of the lockdown n we cover your team every day and if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just follow whever you get Podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and the San Jose Sharks had their annual Prospect scrimmage and folks um the sharks are going to be an absolute monster one day uh The Vibes right now off the charts in San Jose as uh melin celebrini makes his debut uh in teal Will Smith and Quinton musy uh just pair them together for the next thousand years and uh we’re gonna have some other you know conversations and kind of bounce around just some observations from this game and um just seeing some of the prospects and all that but before we get to all that though do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by game time down the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply all right before we get to celebrini and and everything I I think we have to talk about just the buzz and attention and just like the good vibe sharks are on their way to being back actually they’re here right now um it’s because it’s also the middle of July or beginning of July and um the sharks aren’t playing anyone right now but there is an energy to this franchise right now with celebrini kind of of taking it to the next level um and going to texi Arena to cover this game um didn’t really didn’t know what to expect and this that texu was was jumping jumping um anytime celebrini did any even just having his name announced it was very WWE pop just like you know the the crowd going crazy um and there was like a a hush whenever he touch the puck with an oo and an a um guys this this is the time to get in on the Sharks uh because this is this team is not this year not next year who you know who knows when but in the next couple Seasons this team is going to be an absolute just tank destroying people um much like you know watching Patrick Marlo with Danny Heatley and Joe Thorton and and those those teams that just kind of came out and just destroyed people this sharks team is uh well on its way to being one of those types of teams that just every time it touches the ice it is going to just be an absolute menace to other teams but um Texas Arena say was just an absolute it was you could just feel the energy um being there and and what celebrini is going to help do to this franchise and kind of be that Crown Jewel on what uh Mike Greer has been building and what we as sharks fans have kind of you know been waiting to see in behind hush doors of like man wait till we’re good again wait till we’re so it was a little bit of like a sneak preview of what what is going to happen when this team is good again um I for one will be absolutely obnoxious on this podcast and I hope you join me uh when the sharks are good again and we get to just be obnoxious that obnoxious fan that’s going to be us here soon so um we’re going to though kind of you know spend the rest of podcast overreacting to to things and just keep in mind right this is a 4 and four3 Onre exhibition between 18 19 20 21 20 like a bunch of kids right um so if your favorite Prospect didn’t do what you wanted them to do like that’s fine right it’s okay it’s a it’s a prospect scrimmage that is set up um for the forwards to look really good the defense to struggle and the goalies to just be left out to dry so don’t read into everything too much but if your favorite Prospect um did well now’s the time to further push your agenda um that’s what we’re goingon to do here so we we have to start with celebrini who out of kind of as we dig through all these guys but um celebrini little bit slow I think to to get things going and there’s probably a little bit of ner NES there and stuff but by the end as team white was making their their comeback here and um he he showed those those metrics or he showed why he’s such an intriguing player and the way he can control pace and the way he can open up space and it’s just something to watch where he can have a guy on him and then all of a sudden he just makes a little move kind of a little dangle or he just slows he kind of stops um and then then all of a sudden he just has as much space as he wants to work with and his ability to find open guys um great pass to Casper Halton in who on the go to make it seven to six and Halton good luck stopping that any gender I don’t care what level you’re in um Good Luck stopping that one timer from Halon in but cbr’s ability to kind of make space uh play with Pace um which is something you know we have seen in watching celebrating it at Boston University he can speed it up he can slow it down he can do whatever he just he has this innate sense of space and timing around him um and watching it in person is is something to behold um once as a sharks fan you need um you need to make it a point to go see celebrini live and watch him when he has the puck and watch him when he doesn’t have the puck because his ability again it’s just it’s it’s something you can’t teach of just feeling out where to kind of go where everyone is it’s just this hockey IQ that just it’s on another level of kind of just watching him where he goes where he doesn’t go right um and then how he can just all of a sudden turn it on and find this other gear um and yeah you saw flashes of it in this in this game right again there’s a lot of space to work with when you’re playing four on four and three on three but his ability to just create space uh is something to behold and that’s going to be a a trait that’s I’m curious to see how he utilizes that in the NHL um because that’s that’s the NHL right is how do you create and manipulate space for yourself and for your teammates um to put them in a position and put yourself in a position to score or get scoring chances and cel’s ability to do that um he’s pretty good at it he’s pretty good at at manipulating space so um other kind of celebrini takeaways here we’ll we’ll kind of finish up with celebrini here in the first segment before we talk about Smith and musty and kind of other observations but um talking to him you know got him in for the Press availability the way he talks and handles himself uh it’s like he’s not a normal 18 year old kid and everybody you talk to about him just the way he handles himself and the way he is prepared for this moment and to be this guy and um you know it’s a lot of expectations right and you we we all know with these kind of generational or you know these potential Superstar players where they’re picked from a young a like you kind of can tell from a young age as they grow and and but he’s he’s just a different dude man the way he just handles himself and handles his business and how comfortable he is in front of the media with everything going on it just doesn’t bother him um you know he was up there willing to talk to us about you know anything and everything and he handles himself just um like again this kid was just the center of attention in Vegas um at the sphere with you know the entire world watching him get picked number one um cameras following him around and you know the the hanging question of will you won’t you sign your contract and you know the entire weight of a franchise on an 18-year- old kid’s shoulders and doesn’t bother him man he’s just he’s ready to go this kid just wants to play hockey get better at it and try to be the best version of himself and um yeah he’s he’s going to be playing in the NHL like I have this season um I have no doubt about that right now that is that’s all we’re waiting for right now is just him to officially sign his contract because um he’s just he’s too good he’s too smart and he’s just he’s he’s been training for this moment uh his entire life and I think he’s ready to to greet those expectations and somehow succeed in those expectations and um yeah the kids’s good man we we as sharks fans are going to be blessed to have celebrini um in our lives for the next 15 to 20 years years so um hopefully but we’re going to talk about um Will Smith Quint musty some of the other guys who stood out um the big boys that the sharks have uh put together here and some of just some of my other standouts uh so we’ll get to that here in just one [Music] minute passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything and Will Smith I thought was like again 4 on four three on three hockey uh where Will Smith skills are going to to shine Will Smith was the best player on the ice today um the way he like watching him in college right where he kind of slowed things down very much pushing the pace today and him and Quinton musty um just staple them together for the next like 15 years because uh those guys right I’ve talked about it before right if you want to try to emulate what made will Smith so successful at boss you know kind of coming up through the draft to the United States uh national team and then at Boston College trying to emulate those types of players Quint musty is not that bad of a Ryan uh Leonard uh impression like is he gonna be Ryan Leonard no like Ryan Leonard I think is a little bit more physical player um but can Quint musty get pretty close yeah yeah I think so um and those two guys just have like already a six sense about and the way they can they fed off each other I mean look at that first the F very first goal like 20 seconds of the game um Will Smith wins a board battle something that we heard plenty of complaints about by by player by people throughout the season at Boston College and again this is very much overreactions um to a prospect game wins a board battle great makes a beautiful pass over to Quinton musty um who’s just wide open and musy is not going to miss that um musty and Smith later basically a two10 and just uh will like musty kind of feels that Smith’s behind him pushes it out to the outside lets Smith kind of stay on the inside easy two on0 tap in goal for for Will Smith even like Will Smith’s just those hands man are there’s a reason why uh some some folks are calling him Wet Willie um but yeah he’s I I think there’s he’s never going to admit it but I think there’s a little chip on his shoulder with with with celebrating and these two guys have played against each other for you know a long time they’ve they’ve kind of grown up together um you know kind of going through the same you know like especially all these these highend hockey players right you know each other um but I think there’s like just a tad bit of a little ship on Smith they’re like you know celebrating is good but I’m not half bad either and I think he he wanted to kind of go out there and prove it that you know he’s not half bad either and um yeah I we may not be talking about Will Smith enough um just because of they we’re like with celebrini is very much like going into like okay here’s what he’s gonna do in the NHL and Will Smith is very much like yeah but can he when it’s coming to the NHL Will Smith’s a a fabulous hockey player who’s going to to do a lot of positive things and you saw part of that today yes there’s questions there’s going to be questions for for celebrating and there’s questions for every Prospect who who comes through right um but Will Smith’s showing like you know what uh I might be pretty good at this there’s a reason why I was the fourth overall pick in one of the best draft classes that we’ve you know going into it at least one of the best draft classes we’ve seen in a long time um in that 2023 draft right I think Smith you know he’s worked hard to try to add muscle I think they said he’s added eight to 10 pounds of of muscle this off season and he’s got the next two months to to kind of continue to add more muscle to get ready for training camp and um I think he’s he is ready to prove a lot of doubters and people wrong about him maybe going back to Boston College or he was propped up by his Lin mates um yeah I mean we’ve been kind of picturing him on the wing like don’t be surprised if Smith is playing center for the Sharks this season um sooner than you expect I still I still think he’s going to start on the wing as he gets used to it and he talked about how his ability to play the wing it’s much easier for him it’s easier for for players to go from Center to Wing then Wing to Center as we saw with William ekin who grew up as a center but played wing the last couple seasons and you know I think struggle we all you know I think he would admit that he you know maybe overthought it and struggled but um with Smith and how much he has played center his entire career but don’t be surprised if he’s playing maybe starts the season at Wing but he’s gonna be playing Center uh quicker than you realize because he’s there’s yeah he’s got a little bit of a chip on his shoulder right now so um Quint musty too also um just Absolut absolutely looks like a monster ready to to just destroy things um it’s kind of stinks that he has to go back to the OHL because I think he’s too good to be playing in the OHL um he he’s just unfortunate uh you know kind of the circumstances of the CHL NHL agreement where again since he’s not um he either has to play in the NHL or has to play in in the OHL um and because I don’t think he’s going to make the NHL probably plays nine games in the NHL before going back to the ol um but yeah I think he is going to Rampage the OHL um probably put up like 140 points in 50 games or some ridiculous number like that um and have a really really nice World Juniors as well so um and then be ready to go play in the AHL next year but he just looks like you know even like his interview he’s all B business he is ready to I think um show why again maybe a little bit of that ship of him sliding in the first round to number 26 and uh I still think Mike career every night before he goes to bed just Chuckles to himself that he got Quint musty at 26 uh overall and is going to have um Will Smith Quinton musy maon Cel lebrini just rampaging uh here very very soon together so um yeah I was I was that those two just instant chemistry and I cannot wait to see uh what happens when they you put like a William eckan with them or uh like somebody who’s with an insane passing skill like ekin to kind of complete the Line it’s gonna be really fun guys The Vibes are off The Vibes per 60 are just off the charts right now uh with the sharks prospects pull is uh and guess what we deserve it we deserve nice things after what we’ve we’ve gone through the past couple Seasons so um we’ll talk about some of the other kind of guys who stood out including uh Eric pamp um we’ll talk about Casper Halton and you know just some of the uh some of the other guys who I thought really really stood out here uh in just one second all right uh let’s we’ll just kind of bounce around here one of the big things I noticed uh was just how big this team has gotten very very quickly uh watching you know the the prospect scrimmage and Miker has made it a point to uh not only draft big guys but draft big skilled guys uh because the sharks are that’s that’s kind of what they’re building towards um right now is just big skilled players you know you look at Casper I mean I know Will Smith and and mlin CBR are about six foot um but musty you know is like six foot2 Holton who’s I think 6’2 63 you know Dickinson who’s 63 Muk Mullan who 6’4 like they’ve just added a lot of big dudes and going to the prospect game uh when did I I think I went like 207 2018 or 2019 uh when when Merkley was there to now um yeah it’s a it’s a it’s a different thing right now uh just kind of what they’ve been able to to put together um so yeah it’s very interesting and on just how much they’ve they’ve revamped this this thing really quickly so um but yeah I think Casper honon showed why showed a lot today um that shot of course is is ridiculous uh we’ve talked about that shot a bajillion times even I asked M sabrini about that shot and he was just like oh geez like that thing is he called it a special gift for on a special player and halton’s got some some work he’s going to need to do and I think um you know we we we’ll dive into that more as as the summer kind of wears on um but yeah he he looks he’s got a couple issues he’s got to fix to kind of iron out but he looks to be the real deal and especially that shot is going to carry him a long long way um some other guys who I kind of wanted to to shout out um Eric pole Camp I thought was the best defenseman on the ice um you saw I was surprised by the speed of pole camp like he would get the puck and just quickly just boom just go and again four on four three on three you’re going to have more ice time and more but um his foot speed and just how quickly he can kind of get from A to B um really like kind of was my first time watching him in person um really I thought what was a huge highlight and standout for from from him and um he had his he also was part of the media availability especially with the way he played today um he said he wants to he wants to do one year at Denver and and try to go pro and if he keeps kind of the the acceleration and the course that he’s on I don’t see why he he won’t be going pro because um he needs to he mentioned like I want to become a better two-way Defender and playing defense um that’s something that need’s to do and you saw a lot of good defense from him at piji sat and he’s going to take a big step up here playing at University of Denver um but I was yeah pole Camp looks like a really nice treat for the Sharks as an over AER in the mid rounds uh from last year’s draft and um would not be surprised if next year he is on the San Jose Barracuda because um the dude can just flat out play like he’s not the biggest guy in the world but he plays way bigger than he is isn’t afraid to mix it up um and yeah he’s something there’s just something about him so um also Leo sine W wenus who the Sharks drafted um I thought showed some real I thought he I thought he played really nicely as well there’s some issues that you know defensively again um none of the Defenders like are this this is not set up to have Defenders look good as you’re having to kind of play you know three on three on four on four but the way he covered ground I I was really kind of intrigued by that I thought he played pretty well as uh there and I again bit of a project is going to take a couple years but um just nice to kind of see see something out of out of him um weird to see him wearing 65 um also saota was wearing uh 88 and then uh p camp was wearing 48 just a little shocking to see these guys wearing uh these numbers but you know uh it is what it is is unfortunately so um Dickinson I thought had a bit of an up and down game um which again right not everyone’s going to shine to defense thought he made a really nice play on a two-on one um and thought he could have been a little bit more aggressive in some areas and maybe I don’t want to say he just kind of hesitated I thought in some areas and and made some and but it’s fine like again we’re we’re not going to this part we’re not going to overreact as we said before uh one guy who really I was really impressed with was uh Gavin OK Conelly who um I’m not going to lie I had not really heard much of of him beforehand um but he I thought played really really well for and had a goal but like every time he was on the ice he just kind of made plays and did stuff and I’m kind just want to kind of see how he does so um so conly he is at Michigan he played at Michigan State I think he was a try out this year to kind of uh see um you know just try out see how he’s doing um kind of keep him in the back of your mind but uh he’s 20 years old rightwing 181 pound forward um who’s six foot but you know just amateur try out there just kind of keep an eye on him if he has a nice season at uh if the Sharks maybe try to sign him to a deal at some point um but just every time he was on the ice you noticed him doing positive and good things so um like to like to like I really liked what I saw from him so last year he had 15 goals 11 assists and for 26 points and 38 games at Michigan State so um just just somebody I was really really impressed with so um but yeah I think um overall though really fun time uh poor goalies definitely kind of got held out to dry a lot and that’s just kind of part of the way it’s SC it is um I really did like the penalty uh thing where they uh instead of going on a power play they have like the the modified penalty shot where you have a like the whoever kind of Drew the penalty is is at Center and everyone’s at the other blue line and then they blow the whistle and everyone Sprints and uh if you catch the guy who’s trying to take the penalty shot um I I really like that it’s really fun it kind of adds some Intrigue and and stuff to it so I thought that was a kind of a nice rink um I know they they did it last year and I think they’ve done it and uh they do it elsewhere but I just thought it’s a really really fun wrinkle to kind of you know get like because then the game just keeps going from there so um I I I thought it was kind of cool it would be nice to see some my score on one um the goalies kept kind of uh doing good job there in those situations but um overall I think as sharks fans like I said at the beginning um you have to feel like The Vibes are just The Vibes are Immaculate right now um just with the way that this team is is eventually going to be coming together um because it’s celebrini and Smith and musty and hton and you know and Dickinson and kenon and like all these guys are just part of the future and and the future is what they keep saying the future is teal the future is teal um this team is going to be very good quicker than I think maybe people realize especially if Smith and celebrini are half as good as we think they’re going to be especially with the the way this season’s um if that you know kind of the expectations for the Sharks this season which are on the ground right um if they come in and they they start playing well right away and can keep it going it’s not going to be long before uh this team is is starting to contend and going from the rebuild to the fun frisky uh fun frisky stage so again I know it’s July uh Prospect scrimmage with a bunch of guys a bunch of kids but uh you can’t not be excited as a sharks fan and I’m I’m super pumped up for the future uh as much as I’m looking forward to the offseason now and kind of uh enjoying the offseason before another grind of a season there’s also part of me who’s ready for this season to get started because I want to see these guys playing NHL games and playing them um against Real competition and playing them with other NHL players like William Ecklund and you know Fabian zelin and um you know some of these other guys who are you know Tyler to Foley like TTT is going to like TTT is going to be huge huge for for um Ma on celebrini and and Will Smith and these other guys so um yeah I’m cannot wait so plenty more stuff coming along here at lockon sharks so we’ll be back next week as we start to kind of uh shift through the wreckage that has been the offseason we’ll start to kind of do deep Dives onto the Sharks an newest prospects um kind of you know plenty of good stuff coming up here so make sure you’re following wherever you get Podcast and reports you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until Monday bye friends [Music]
San Jose Sharks fans showed why the vibes are off the charts right now, as there was a palpable buzz at Tech Cu Arena for the Sharks’ annual prospect scrimmage game. With six first-round picks on the ice, headlined by Macklin Celebrini, the Sharks showed why the future is teal. Start with Celebrini’s first game in teal, why he showed flashes of what makes him so special, and why his personality will make him successful. Then, Will Smith was the best player on the ice today and showed why he is ready to start his professional career. Quentin Musty continued to show his development and an instant chemistry with Will Smith. Then, bounce around some observations of the other prospects, including Kasper Halttunen continuing to work on his game, Eric Pohlkamp turning pro sooner rather than later, and Gavin O’Connell impressing.

I think JD was the one who originally created the “Director of Vibes” title for Jumbo give this man his props!!
I am here for the vibes. And I can't wait for this team this year and to hear JD talk about them. This man has been through the ringer for this team and kept us all engaged for years. I don't think you know how much you mean to a lot of us Sharks fans JD. Love ya buddy!
And you live in Fresno. You must not sleep.
What did ya think of Donovan Houle? You mentioned all the guys I thought deserved praise…
🙌🤝🙏🤙
Pohlkamp looked incredible in the scrimmage!
What is the next thing that will happen? Rookie camp before the preseason? That happens around Sept 1st or something like that? Also – do you expect the Sharks to take on any bad contracts or anything like that throughout the offseason? Or other than free agent signings, this is pretty much it?
Hello from El Paso Texas. Will Smith is the Sharks secret weapon. My prediction is he will have more success than Macklin Celebrini. Either way I wish both the best of luck. Go Sharks.
What did cardsy look like?
I agree with what your saying about Smith he's getting asked all these questions about celebrini but he's probably thinking what about me
I think Will Smith is going to play with a dawg in him. Not afraid to get in your face, not tell you that he’s better than you, but show you. I think he will be someone that opposing players are going to hate playing against for a long time
I thought Smith looked so good.. he’s taken some big steps. Smith and Musty playing together 💀
I never stopped being obnoxious
JD-
Great wrap up Bud….. Im out of state but thankfully the scrimmage was covered for us to watch. It was a lot of fun and the vibe could be felt on the screen, What I like to think about is this- we saw a great show and still we have William Eklund and Zetts waiting for this group to arrive! those 2 started to pave the way last year. Mike is sticking to his guns & the quality decisions are outstanding!
I think svoboda and van roboys definetly deserved mentions as well
Down by 2 goals, Celebrini coming on as the extra attacker, he took the game over 😂 Awesome to see! Haltunnen one-times it to get them within 1 with 2 minutes left and a running clock…Celebrini doesn’t celebrate he skated to the faceoff circle right away to keep attacking. He’s such a competitor!
Great show, JD! Hope SJ can get 1 or 2 more strong drafts to round out the roster.
We need one more top 3 pick this next year to officially assemble the infinity gauntlet
Really curious to see the lines in 2-3 years.
You know Grier is going to go out and sign a big fish or two to play on those top 2 lines as well.
I like what I'm seeing with the prospects, and the Sharks. One question… Who is going to protect these kids on the ice? I think the Sharks are soft, and they need somebody to come in like a McSorley or somebody like this to protect this young investment.
