got for me slightly biased that was uh leading uh the mean green un to uh glory in the new NCAA there you go that was a better use of your time I uh I scheduled a doctor’s appointment that was a better that better use of my my time oh my gosh was even playing we would Edie better use of his time to yeah seriously just hang out there uh but yeah we will not talk much about the map Summer League game we’ll maybe touch on it at the end but there’s just they almost had 30 turnovers they look terrible there’s not a ton to take from that game we’ll we’ll resume when there’s something to take home from some of these games so today we’ll get into which teams made moves around the uh the NBA that uh affect Dallas the most that that impact the Mavericks the most and we each picked three we didn’t tell each other what they are and so we’re going to start with them and uh I’m gonna start with the team I think affected Dallas the most with their moves and I’m interested to see if we have any crossovers I’m sure this one we we both have the same I think what the Oklahoma City Thunder did in getting Caruso and hartenstein affects Dallas a ton because that team went went six games the Mavs found a way to beat them but now all of a sudden the Mavericks have okay they we got to talk about clay guarding SGA now something we got to maybe talk about uh especially if you saw the video of clay pay playing pickup with those guys then are you is it true that he had 45 points in that I I never care about those videos ever how long how long did he play um but we do have to talk about that and then we have to talk about OKC has size now and they have uh like a demon back court to to borrow your phrase like a demon back court of of lud dor and and Alex Caruso they were already one of the top teams in deflections and Steals and all that kind of stuff now they bring in Alex Kusa who can do that who can hit a three viably and honestly like losing giddy for them is was is kind of good for them because nobody had to guard him and that was the way the Mavericks really went in and tried to uh defend the thunder so to me I think that of all the teams the thunder made the moves that affect Dallas the most because I think they I think they leap frogged him a little bit Yeah I think the Thunder had the best offseason in the NBA because they got much better and they addressed their areas of weakness without giving up really anything they gave up giddy who they were gonna give up anyways and I guess maybe you can make the argument that they sold kind of low on giddy which I you know they got a great role player in return but there was a time last year where giddy was like the headline of these big star level packages that we were kind of they had hopes yeah right there were hopes there so but uh yeah I mean they definitely got better they addressed their big area of weakness getting a big I still think hardenstein by the end of it will be starting or he’ll be closing games at least uh they paid him 30 million with Chad or without with Chad I think they could those two could definitely coexist alongside one another and and it could work um I mean defensively that their closing Five is going to be absolutely disgusting like it’s it’s going to be so incredibly good hartenstein was a sneaky you know uh end of ballot Defensive Player of the Year level guy this year I don’t know if he got any votes but that’s just how good he was Chad’s obviously an incredible Defender and then Caruso Shay Jay are all great defenders in their own right too like jdub’s the weakest Defender there I guess Shay probably is but if Shay’s your weakest defender in your fivan closing lineup like that’s yuck pretty good yeah to me that that this is the team that made the most moves and like hardenstein so just talking just sticking on him for a second they bring him in like I like you said I think he could probably play with with Chad they’ll probably play without but at least you have now 48 minutes of a center that can do stuff like that and I think hardenstein can be a glue guy for them it it did feel like they missed some kind of glue guy they’ve got these pieces that can do all these different things they’ve got you know the stars and and SGA and and you know in jayd dub and then they’ve got Chad who can do a bunch of stuff it’s like just need like one connective tissue guy and then they got two in Caruso and hardenstein they can both do a bunch of things like that I mean really really good offseason for them uh they end up getting some guys in draft too that I don’t think will affect them very much but topic uh Flagler like they get Dylan Jones the big guard like they they get a couple of guys there too I don’t think those moves affect the Mavs but what do you think about the Klay Thompson has to guard SGA now thing because I don’t know I know you spent a long time away from Twitter this offseason and that was probably really good for your mental health but if you’re a Mavs fan that’s been on Twitter there are all these accounts and if you’re not on Twitter great great for your mental health too great choice by you there are all these accounts that have like thunder in their bio thunder in their display name it’s the profile picture is some Thunder player or something or it’s Westbrook from when he was on the Thunder and they all are just saying oh clay guarding SGA now that’s food that’s food for SGA now and so I’m curious what you think about that move now going from Derrick Jones Jr to to clay at least in the starting lineup which has been confirmed Now by Shams uh guarding SGA then well that’s that of course they’re think of that cuz that’s who they have to beat now this they’ve been stewing on it for months like the Mavs moved on obviously played two more series The the Thunder fans have been stewing on it forever and I have noticed it on Twitter they are wo they cannot wait to get their crack at the Mavericks again they can’t they can’t all live in OKC right like there’s no way they all live in OKC dude I I have I know several people in the DFW metlex who are who have no ties to Oklahoma City whatsoever but are huge Thunder fans because they loved uh they loved Russ and and U KD they love that era fair but um and there’s there’s always those people who want to be contrarians they’re like all my friends are m fans like I want to be a better fan but it’s like all the people not Cowboys fans here like do do we not remember that Shay went off of that series that this this was GNA be my point on this SGA already had a really good series he was the only one that that they could get going like dere JN Jr really didn’t bother him that much he got the shots that he wanted got to his spots that he wanted and the Mavericks like said all right go one-on-one and go ahead and get your contested mid-range shots and go ahead and hit a bunch of really tough tough shots like SGA was great in that series did a bunch of good stuff like I don’t know what the reason why that he couldn’t do more is he’s not the like crazy ten assist playmaker type guy he’s not going to create a bunch of shots for others and when you when you play that one-on-one style that the mava against Luca and Kyrie the whole playoffs at different times you’ve got to be able to not only just attack and get your own but you got to create for others too and create opportunities and advantages for them too by bending the defense to your will instead of just bending a shot to like to your will and the to the rim and so I think that that’s a little bit of a difference there and honestly that’s the difference between SGA and Alca is that he he can do those extra things and SGA is just really really freaking good at the the one thing that he’s really good at and so uh but but I I do think that clay guarding sg’s it’s a little bit of a downgrade but we’ll see how nji Marshall does we’ll see how Quinton Grimes does I think that those guys will will step in and do some stuff if the Mavs need to bring in those guys they can and uh it’s not like the Mavs lost uh lineup options the Thunder gained some lineup options but the Mavericks didn’t lose any I don’t think no and the Thunder I think they are I think they are the best team in the west currently just in terms of how the roster is constructed I’m pretty sure they’re the betting favorites to win the West right now too but it’s not like they’re they’re a perfect team and without flaw like they they still need and we saw this in the playoffs and especially in the series against the Mavs they still need jdub or Chad yes really those two to step up and turn into that all right I got you for 20 plus 25 points a game uh in these big big playoff games like I’m I’m with you shay let’s do this because it was it was pretty much all Shay against the Mavericks jdub was not really there and Chad was Chad slammed into a rookie wall halfway through last season offensively at least and that carried into the playoffs so they still need one of those guys to take a step forward at least in the playoffs and uh if they do they’re gonna be really scary but if not then they’re it’s going to be kind of similar where they’re going to be good defensively they’ll be better rebounding the basketball right with hardenstein there but um there they’ll still struggle I think they generate offense outside of sheld Alexander which was really the big problem against the Mavericks yeah one of the things I said when the when the guinea trade happened was that man they are really asking a lot of SGA and Jay if they don’t make another move and add another offensive guy they’re really asking a lot of SGA and Jaylen Williams to really create a lot of offense not just for themselves but for others and maybe maybe Chad takes a huge jump in that area too he becomes a 20 you know 25 Point per game score and we’re like okay that’s where they got the offense from that’s where it’s coming but it’s still only three guys it’s kind of the same problem Mavericks had you know last couple of years that who else creates offense at least with gidy during the regular season they had that guy that could create the transition opportunities create a little bit in the half court and do some of that kind of stuff they don’t have that option anymore they’re not getting that with hardenstein they’re not getting that with cruso or any of their their rookies maybe case walls takes a step forward too but I mean JB’s a good playmaker too but he’s not for sure they needed his scoring more than anything else in that in that Series yeah so I think OKC made the moves that affected Dallas the most who else made moves that affected Dallas the most I your your finals appearing Dallas Maverick let’s go that’s right baby we’re talking about the teams that made moves around the the Mavericks that affect the Mavericks the most the Thunder is the team we started to talk about first give me your next team that made moves that affect the Mavericks the most well you teased them out the Denver Nuggets were actually gonna be my number one team but all right okay I’m in because the th the Thunder obviously now that we talked about it made the moves that I think shift the balance of power in the west maybe more than any other moves but the Nuggets very quietly here and I guess not necessarily so quietly but since they’ve won their Championship have gotten worse just as a roster they have gotten worse and it has now reached a critical point with Casey Pon uh and you know Bruce Brown leaving was a big deal but Bruce Brown wasn’t in in their starting five and they felt like they could maybe figure out how to plug in his minutes and his Roll Off the Bench kyp was in their starting five which was the best starting five in basketball it’s been the best starting five in basketball since it’s been assembled and they lose him they replace him with nothing really and now they’re I I’m guessing penciling in Christian Brown into the starting five that’s what it sounds like they are and and their bench is like genuinely one of the worst in basketball including any team any rebuilding team uh all of them their depth will be tested this year and you look at Jamal Murray that’s not a guy who’s been healthy for huge chunks of his career uh Michael Porter Jr obviously is not a guy who’s been healthy for huge chunks of his career if they deal with any significant injuries to some serious guys and not you never want that to happen but it’s part of the sport it happens um man I’m just looking at their their bench right now it’s their bench is so bad every time I look at their bench they’re expecting Christian Brown to jump into that starting five and like listening to Adam marz and lock on nuggets and those guys I don’t think I’m kind of with them I don’t think there’ll be a big drop off with their starting unit but then anytime any of those guys sit like the starting five will still be very good still be one of the best in basketball and all that and we’ll be like oh they don’t miss kcp but as soon as any of those guys sit or like you said as soon as any of them miss any sign amount of time it’s you know you got Dario sarich which is like a nice piece that they picked up I think that that’s pretty good move I like that um he he’s going to be all right STW and and and Watson have been all right at times but you don’t you don’t really know what you can get from them uh Zeke Nai them giving him that contract has kind of really hurt them now because they don’t really have flexibility to get anybody else uh and he hasn’t really lived up to even like the $9 million he’s gonna make this season he hasn’t really lived up to it they get our boy tonar back maybe he helps them a little bit you got DeAndre Jordan uh don Holmes their rookie that they were excited about Taurus Achilles and so he’s going to be out I mean they are really like struggling to find anything going right now and it and it’s all unproven like unproven not just in their on their teams like we’re looking at like the Mavericks right now the Mavericks problem is like Klay Thompson is unproven commodity in our lineup you’re like okay the Nuggets bench is looking at we have unproven Commodities in the NBA like can can they be NBA players wild question to be asking and and we’re not saying that they’re going to win you know 35 games or something they’ll be a playoff team of course they’ll be fighting for a top seed but when it gets to that postseason in the 16 games where yes the rotations do shrink so you’re not looking for 10 or 11 guys who can play but those sixth seventh eighth guys are very very important and 100% will swing games for you in big moments and if it’s Hunter Tyson or Julian Str or you’re like you’re really hoping for some of these guys yeah we’re we’re really like imagine the Mavericks entire bench just to give us back to the Mavericks were like slightly better versions of omx prospers like that’s kind of what kind of yeah where it’s like well we’re really banking on this guy’s shot has to has to dramatically improve or this guy has to get better on defense or this guy has to get better with his decision making or else uh they’re just not really ready to be top eight guys in a contending team contending teams rotation that’s wild that’s a very good point that like P like the Julian strw and omx prosper like if they were put in different situations where omx had to be playing like 15 minutes a night on the Mavs he would have moments where we would go oh man look at that like and then we’d be like oh my gosh I can’t believe they’re relying on omx to like to run there or to be in their second unit yeah so that team is struggling and I mean not not to mention that I guess they have zek Nagi but DeAndre Jordan is their backup center to joic like well sarch would probably be getting most of those guess I guess getting some five run Gordon gets a lot Gordon gets a lot of backup five run for them they’re just they’re just they’re just stretching their lineup really thin they also have no shot creation outside of Luca no Luca joic and uh and Jamal Murray kind of Michael Porter junor like it’s kind of it right like yeah I mean it’s it’s crazy because I remember after they won a couple years ago there was that I guess technically last year at this point calendar year but it’s like there were people who were talking like the Nuggets could be building towards this several year run here and now you’re looking at the roster and it’s like oh they’re in some Jeopardy unless some of these young guys really really turn it on which is possible but I I definitely think losing kcp for nothing hurts and I’ve had nuggets fans in my chat and on Twitter who are coping pretty hard no man that one hurts like that hurts yeah he was very good he he was very very good they lose Bruce Brown they lose Casey B for basically nothing both years and you haven’t replaced him it’s a tough one so fair I thought I thought they would replace Bruce Brown just uh I’m shocked that they couldn’t figure out a way to just replace him internally but they couldn’t yeah Christian Brown stepped up a little so he’s maybe the one that has but you also did then didn’t replace him so yeah the big question he’s better than Bruce Brown I agree with you coming up let’s talk about the other teams that made moves that affected the Dallas Mavericks I’ve got one that uh is a tough one because it’s a give and take it’s a give and take the Mavs got better they also got worse a little we’ll talk about that in more coming up you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here today’s episode is brought to talking about the teams that made moves that impacted the Mavericks the most the Thunder absolutely getting Caruso getting hardenstein affect the Mavericks losing giddy I think is helpful for them in ways and then BR brings up questions for them the Nuggets losing kcp and not really replacing him is huge I think also a small thing to that if I can add one more is the maps adding clay and adding three-point shooting like widens the gap between those two teams and the amount of three-point shooting uh like the big the difference between that and if the Mavs can hit a bunch of Threes against the Nuggets then that helps them win that game because the the nuggets are not going to hit a bunch of Threes next year I mean who’s who’s replacing casy B and it’s tough that’s a tough one for Denver yic is about to bomb threes he he probably should my next one the Los Angeles Clippers yeah Paul George leaving is a big one they get Derrick Jones Jr so that kind of that affects the Mavericks it’s a give and take in this one but I think Paul George leaving the Clippers takes them out of like Fringe contention because you don’t forget this Clippers team last season had a run where we looked at them and went is this the best team in the NBA yeah yeah no that stretch they had was I think the best a team looked all season long including any of the Celtics play like that’s how good they were for that tiny stretch but again it was a tiny stretch and yeah like you said two months yeah it was two months that’s not insignificant but uh it was just at the wrong time for them but yeah I mean losing Paul George definitely lowers their ceiling I mean dere Jor Jor is a really great role player we know that firsthand like uh Nick batum’s back he’s a great role player and he’s been really good for them but yeah I mean kawai’s already hurt they took him off the Team USA roster what’s going on with that I don’t know because it sounded like they were like yeah he’s hurt but then it came out today that he wasn’t hurt so did they just cut him Team USA released a statement that was like Team USA as as well as the uh you know as the you know the Clippers are pulling him and the Clippers were like hey guys we didn’t we didn’t do that we wanted him to play just just to heads up tyo is an assistant coach on Team USA to add some uh to stir the pot just a little bit more but uh yeah I mean yeah there you go I don’t I don’t fully know what they’re doing to be honest with you because not bringing back Paul George to just makes my makes me scratch my head because it’s just you’re already committed to this like you’re already committed to it like why not just do it why not throw him the contract he wants and it’s Paul George like even if it doesn’t work out this year there’s still going to be a team out there in the summer next year who’s desperate enough to trade for him like if the Sixers didn’t land them and they lose in the second round again this year they would have traded for embiid next year that’s what darl that’s how Dar Mor operates like I I just I don’t really understand what they’re doing um and yeah they’ll be they’ll know if qu’s healthy and stuff and Harden they’ll still be good they’ll still be fighting for yeah they’ll be in that five to nine 10 range more than likely but yeah that’s a a a team that you usually consider a contender or right on Fringe contention status is probably out of it in the Western Conference they also lose they’re also probably going to lose Westbrook which is which can’t be overlooked I know he just tried to tackle Luca a bunch in the Mavs series but he did do some good stuff for them during the regular season and Kevin Porter Jr come on down I mean he is and Josh primo and like I don’t know what they’re doing over there with the clippers but that can’t be good for locker room I mean can that be good for a locker room I don’t I really don’t think these athletes care I have to be honest I know we all want to get on our I I know these guys don’t care I don’t think in any real significant way they might not Uh Kevin Porter Jr that has had issues in a bunch of places he’s been so I don’t don’t that is true actually but yeah I mean it’s it’s Norman pal still teren man bringing Kevin Porter Jr James Harden Derek Jones Jr Kawhi Leonard Nick patum coffe Zub he doing there Mo bomba he’s going to start and he’s going to have a role apparently that was the thing he said today I just best Lu to him oh that was so sad slightly that was so sad like the the tone and the tenor of your voice I it is sad I mean I’m G miss him I didn’t I really didn’t think he would leave zek Nai is going to dive on the floor and he’s going to grab a loose ball and he’s going to Chuck a halfcourt pass to Lively for dunk and you’re just you’re going to be over that I think Naji Marshall who did I say zi you said zek nji I was like wait did I did I miss something I’m not playing I’m watching just like you guys I was like oh oh was there breaking news I missed but yes that that is true I’m excited for doar the knife the knife I thr a surprise teamate you I meant the knife yes yes I can’t believe I just said zage the spur whoa yeah left field you’re you’re high on these moves because I do love their offseason I I don’t think they’re going to be good this year um they might fight for the playing tournament depending on how good wimy looks but they are in the Mavs Division and they got better like they did they got better if you can pencil in a wimy top 10 leap which is very very I would bet that happens more than I would say it wouldn’t happen the same way Luka did year one to year two yep exactly man that’s crazy that that just happened like that’s the leap LCA Luka was all in first team year two and it was like not really up for debate Isaac and I on this show many times that season were like why is he not being talked about as as most improved he went from literally like good good player Fringe Fringe Fringe of Fringe All-Star to like First Team all NBA there’s there’s no other leap that’s bigger than that why did he not win and so we may be talking about wemi the same way this year second year guys just don’t win it and I think that’s they do when was the last time a second year guy won it was johnar going in a year too because I remember everyone was like why did John marant just win most improved that was the biggest fraudulent one but no I’m looking at the roster Devon Vel who I love he has to stay healthy he’s really good player Chris Paul now is your point guard so you get an adult who knows how to run an offense at the point and Trey Jones can be the backup point guard and he’s really good I like him a lot Harrison Barnes you know whatever maybe John R was year three when he won it yeah that was the stup that was maybe the dumbest Award of the last 25 years um not that he didn’t not that he didn’t deserve it but it was just like wait what why is this guy get he was a second overall pick it was really good not that he didn’t deserve it it’s so funny he deserved it it’s still ridiculously stupid it it just doesn’t make sense as an award okay to me I I’m with you on this Spurs I don’t think it’s one I didn’t even mention my honorable mentions I have a bunch of them because I was thinking about which which one but I didn’t think about the long long term like the Long play effect on this of like Chris Paul helping wemi establish him self as a potential top 10 player and like setting him up to win longterm and not just like this season it’s pretty good but also think about think about I think their moves take them out of the okay we got the Spurs on our on our uh schedule this we yeah right takes them out of that Stratosphere where there I think there will only be one of those teams and that’s Portland who are going to be absolutely atrocious Jazz will be pretty bad well depending on what they do with marketing which I don’t know what what’s going on there be worse they they’re be bad now they still don’t have any guards yeah I know they’re going to be bad but if they trade marketing and if they trade marke in please get him to the Eastern Conference somehow please he’s gonna go back to the Clippers and we’ll be like dang it how do they do that there’s this Warriors that’s like the Warriors smoke with them is really real yeah they got a couple they got a couple picks that they have they got some young guys I guess I well I guess hardenstein takes a thunder out I mean I’m still if I’m the Thunder there’s no way he’s not on my team how’ you give how would you give up for him picks I don’t care we’ll make it happen I was say they got they just don’t have this problem with them is the salaries you send Lou Dort Lou Dort and whatever else let’s make it happen Lou Goodbye Lou that would make them very scary to me Isaiah Joe making 12.9 million all of a sudden now can they oh yeah I forgot can they just resign I guess they have to wait for him you know speaking of the Mavs in in Klay Thompson even though we weren’t talking about them at all but this is a Mavericks podcast correct the Warriors did some interesting things they on your honorable Mission Warriors was my first H one mentioned clay leaving to Dallas was wasn’t good one that affected the Mavericks the most I look I look at the roster and I think in some ways they got maybe better interesting make the case I I think the Anthony Melton’s pretty good but he missed pretty much all of last season um I don’t think anyone they got is better than clay necessarily but they did get three I think pretty solid rotation guys this offseason in Melton buddy heeld and Kyle Anderson and um I don’t know how much more improving like P zimsky or or Trace Jackson Davis could do but if you pencil in like a leap from either of those two or just those two getting better just from being year two in the NBA they’ll be solid I don’t think that they’re I I think that their days contending are probably done I think that window is just over yeah well to me they’re like the Clippers and them are kind of Clippers them and Lakers are kind of all on the same level where like all right they didn’t do a lot they’ve still got some really great players where you’re like man we got to play this team tonight we got to deal with LeBron and AD we got to deal with Stephan Draymond we got to deal with Kawai and Harden it’s like okay it’s gonna be tough but it come playoff time they’ve got huge holes yeah agreed no for sure I think they’re they’re just a sneaky like they lose clay I think a lot of people are just going to write them off entirely but I think they’re still a pretty solid team yeah you can’t you can’t play the clay was really bad last year and
