Hal wasn’t negotiating against himself.
Aaron had an offer. It was on him to respond.
He asked for one more year.
Hal agreed on the terms and they came together on a contract.
Your last point – that they were ready to let him walk – isn’t at all implied in the Post article.
It’s just how negotiations work…
