DK’s Daily Shot of Steelers: A lock on Porter?

DK’s Daily Shot of Steelers: A lock on Porter?

[Music] never let it be spoken that this program is not responsive to its listeners good morning to you good Tuesday morning I’m de kovachich DK Pittsburgh sports and this is daily shot of Steelers it comes your way bright and early every weekday if you’re into hockey and or baseball I also offer daily shots of penguins and pirates in the same place that you found this talk about the secondary yesterday talked about how the secondary could become a concern if certain components don’t come together and along the way I basically scratched off my list of concerns Minka Fitzpatrick for obvious reasons and Joey Porter Jr and that met with some surprising blowback and I do mean surprising like I take a lot of pride in communicating with those of you who listen to my shows or read my columns or whatever I happen to do there isn’t that much that’ll throw me back but this did the first was a a comment from Linda who said DK I don’t understand why everyone has jpj as a lock he has much more to prove as far as penalties Zone coverage and tackling and I thought all right well that’s just one one person respectfully Linda you’re one person then Chris comes in with Joey Porter Jr is going to be a star and I’m thinking all right yeah Chris that’s where I am too good for you but then cat follows up with jpj you got to give him three years like all rookies too many fans have him as a lock I hope he’s shown the skill that sticks but he’s not a shutdown player just yet I don’t know I don’t know see to me it’s tough to assign analysis to outside corners you can get into every single route that’s run how often the ball goes his way the caliber of the wide receiver he’s covering how often he gets help or doesn’t get help and what you’re left with the most rudimentary level is that in his rookie season Porter had 17 games played of course this is a regular season 11 starts he did start the game in Buffalo as well the playoff game one interception 10 passes defense 43 tackles there’s almost nothing you can do with that information you can’t look at it and say oh he should have had more picks or he should have gotten his hand on the football more often because even that can’t be Quantified because if the other team says we’re not throwing in that kid’s Direction no chance we’re going everywhere but where he is well how do you how do you weigh that you know I blurted out derell rias’s name yesterday but when derell was on and I mean really on I’m talking about fullon Rivas Island they just didn’t throw his way and so the Jets defensive scheme could just take advantage of that because one player one important player was wiped completely out of the equation and he’d of course have his teammates and his coaches singing but his statline was empty there was nothing to see as I view Porters rookie season and I’m going to move off the numbers and I’m going to go just off having been at all of these games and having had an angle that’s probably a lot better than what they offer you on TV when it comes to this sort of thing because you’re seeing the entire field and if you choose to you can isolate on any player you want obviously I mean that’s true of anybody that buys a ticket and goes into the stadium as well what I like the best about Porter and this is a talk he and I had in Seattle after the game out there in which DK metf was probably getting the best of him for a while there but at the end when it counted Joey made the big Play In The End Zone to win the game what I liked best was that he he looked sounded and felt like he belonged in that specific role bear in mind this is someone who when he first started breaking into the lineup was walking right up to Mike Tomlin in that building on southwater street and saying Hey I want this guy I want this guy you got to let me have at him you got to let me be the one who covers him now if every head coach listened to every player who did that sort of thing you’d have some pretty Grizzly matchups every Sunday because everybody thinks they can do it the difference is Porter can do it so when Tomlin heard these sort of things from him he loved it he loved it and he embraced it and what’s more he and Terell Austin deployed him that way they put him out there in those situations and when things didn’t go well as they didn’t for a big part of that game in Seattle they stuck by him now if you want to talk about you know the shortcomings that are in his game that’s a fair stance to take he entered his rookie NFL season as not being anywhere near an NFL tackler but that got better as the season went along it did and now he came into these summer workouts OTAs and mini camp and all that other stuff 10 PBS heavier which one of course would hope wouldn’t affect his Speed and Agility but which also will allow him to make those tackles without the Herculean effort he’ have had to apply with his former frame now all that said all I’m going to say back to everybody who responded regarding Porter is this if he’s not starting who is okay there’s another way of looking at it when we come back j1q this segment of daily shot is brought to you by our good friends at Mike’s beer bar they’re located on Federal Street directly across from PNC Park Mike has more than 500 beers on top including from more than 50 local breweries stop in and say hello tell Mike we sent you Mike’s beer [Music] bar today’s j1q comes from Dan who says DK who’s our slot corner to start the season Dan of course like everybody else knows that cam Sutton won’t be that guy he won’t be the corner at all or anything for the first eight games of the Season having been suspended by the NFL for domestic violence and although the Steelers couldn’t have known in advance what the NFL’s specific suspension length would be or even if there’d be a suspension they probably had to have planned for the event and as such I’m going to keep believing as I did before Sutton was brought back that they had some idea who they wanted to compete for this already in the house now I say that and what’s in the house is beanie Bishop that’s right I said beanie Bishop I just said it twice actually because it’s fun to say beanie bishop and get used to that name because you’re going to be hearing a lot of it in l trobe in the preseason and probably beyond that could be good that could be bad but my understanding is they really really like what they’ve seen of Bishop this summer now he is for anybody who doesn’t know an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia he’s 24 years old he spent six years in college football programs and he appears to have The Moxy and the makeup that you always want to have at that position it’s usually kind of a Firebrand type personality who ends up there but it also happens to be somebody who’s quicker who’s really athletic who can make reads who can make football plays at the position instinctive natural rolled out of the womb making football plays kind of guy if that sounds like I’m building up to yet another description of the way Mike Hilton was when he showed up yes I actually am doing that this is what Hilton did this was the Hilton path he was the undrafted free agent he was the one who’s yelling over in Mike tomlin’s Direction on Chuck nfield too small too small as if to repeat a criticism back to Tomlin and all Hilton did was make football plays he continued making football plays for the Steelers and then of course moving on to the Bengals where he made more football plays for a lot more money the Steelers by the way never really adequately replaced him in that regard certainly not when it came to activating him to help pursue in the offensive backfield So to that end and read into this what you want the Steelers coaching staff when Bishop arrived after not being drafted handed him figuratively a roll of film of Hilton’s work and said do this become this and Bishop himself spoke of striving to do exactly that okay I mean there’s no harm in trying there’s no harm in giving this kid a chance the evaluators of this football team had to have seen something in Bishop’s background and in his own film particularly with the Mountaineers that would lead them to believe he can be that type of player all right go ahead be that type of player if it doesn’t work out that way well player Acquisitions don’t get cut off whenever training camp starts I appreciate the question it’s a good one I appreciate everybody listening to daily shot of Steelers we’re going to do another one of these tomorrow

How much of a lock, if at all, is Joey Porter Jr.?

  1. I'm hoping that he has learned what his negatives were as a Rookie and can turn them into positives. If he can do that, then his ceiling will continue to grow.
    I wish Jr the best!

  2. With an improved LB core I feel JPJ and our backs will benefit. They can concentrate more on coverage and ball hawking as the front 7 should be more capable to deal with the run. I think JPJ is a more intelligent and calculated player than his dad and in time will bring some of that porter nastiness to elevate his game!!!

  3. I have the utmost belief in JPJ, being able to shut down the recievers he did in his rookie campaign. I can't wait to see what his sophomore jump looks like this season.

  4. Porter absolutely proved himself last year, essentially shutting down some of the best receivers in the league. Can he improve on some things? Of course, he was a rookie, but that just makes it more exciting. He IS going to get better.

  5. I swear, sometimes people are just contrary to be contrary. JPJ also did not show up to training camp his rookie season in NFL shape.
Beannie Bishop is fun to say, like when Barry Bonds bunted down the baseline in Boston. 😊

  6. Your secondary concerns are extremely valid dk. By far our biggest question mark on defense. Even if we have 2-3 quality players you need more then that to have a good secondary
