Will the Texans See Kamari Lassiter Lockdown a Corneback Spot? What About Other Position Battles?

Texans Training Camp starts this week and with the start of training camp is the start of position battles here are four position battles that will Define Texans Training Camp and four of the position battles I’m keeping my closest eyes on throughout the course of training camp let’s start with position battle number one quarterback two that starting spot opposite of Derek Stingley three contenders for this spot it’s rookie Kamari Lasser and signed in free agency CJ Henderson and Jeff okuda now let’s talk about Lasser who is a head to me of okuda and Henderson after the spring practices now the media didn’t get to see every spring practice but the spring practices we did get to see I would tell you that I’d put Lasser ahead of CJ Henderson and Jeff okuda and it’s not crazy to think that a rookie is going to start opposite Derek Stingley Deo Ryan and Nick cerio have been very open with the fact that they don’t care if a guy’s a rookie a veteran they just want the best players on the field and there’s a chance Lasser is the best cornerback behind Derek Stingley for the Houston Texans why wouldn’t he and couldn’t he start he absolutely can he was impressive at Georgia and then in the spring practices he looked fluid and most of all he looked fast at the cornerback spot for a guy that was supposed to be slow in the draft process the draft process saying he was a slow player he didn’t look football slow on the field staying toe-to-toe with tank Dell and Stefan Diggs a couple different times in the spring practices he’s got a lot of work to do and he’s got to keep all that up throughout the course of the entirety of training camp but ler absolutely can and if he plays the best should be the starting quarterback opposite Derek Stingley now he’s got off fend off two guys who’ve played a lot in the NFL now it’s been disappointing to this point for CJ Henderson and Jeff UDA both former top picks Henderson by the Jaguars and then played for the Panthers UDA by the Lions and then played for the Falcons both of those players are here because the Texans believe they can draw out the best in those guys Henderson slightly ahead of okuda in the spring workouts I would tell you the one two three for that second quarterback spot right now is Kamari Lasser CJ Henderson and Jeff okuda and Henderson and okuda are here because Deo Ryan has explained that they believe that they are sticky in coverage that they are long and that they are Speedy at the cornerback spot and look the Texans if they could draw something out of one of these guys or heck even both of these guys it would go a long way into calming some of my fears about the secondary if Derek Stingley who’s had four straight football seasons two in college and two in the pros drastically affected by injury if Derrik Stingley is injured at any point this season you’re looking at a very unimpressive from a talent standpoint cornerback room you’re looking at Kamari Lasser who’s a rookie a second round rookie and you’re looking at either Henderson or okuda or maybe both of those guys if Stingley gets dinged up that’s not the best cornerback situation but if Henderson and okuda and even Lasser made this decision difficult if this was a tough battle between these three for that second quarterback spot and made it a hard decision on who’s going to be say quarterback three or the other backup excuse me the main backup on the outside then you’d feel a little bit better about kind of you could exhale a little bit from a depth St point right now some of these guys have to go out there and prove they can be depth and then of these three guys Lasser and Henderson and okuda somebody’s got to prove that they’re the starter opposite Derek Stingley that’s position battle number one position battle number two is another starting spot it’s the left guard spot yeah the left guard spot is up for grabs and your contenders for this one Kenyan green Kendrick green and Jared Patterson now I put the caveat here that ju scrs could absolutely end up playing left guard if say Jared Patterson was going to be the center I believe Scruggs is going to be the starting center so that would leave Patterson as a potential Center backup as well as a potential competitor for that left guard spot let’s start with Kenyan green who transformed his body and looks to be as healthy as he’s ever been in his NFL career the improved physique is important on two fronts when it comes to K Kenyan green excuse me I’m gonna get the greens mixed up here Ken Yun green the improved physique is important on two fronts the first is he put in the work to change his body to adjust the composition of what he looks like no more big beerbelly what it looked like and I say beerbelly no he just he looked like a a bit thicker upstairs and maybe not as muscular as some of the other guards around the NFL he looks very muscular now it looks like he’s lost some weight trimmed up and again I always say the Jersey doesn’t look like it’s suctioned on to him anymore there’s some play and some looseness in the jersey and on top of changing his body the second important thing and maybe the most important thing about Kenyan green is to be able to do that he had to be healthy so Kenyan green now appears to be as healthy as he’s ever been injuries have ruined his career up to this point it gave him a slow start in training camp as a rookie it hurt his rookie season it obviously took away his second season in the NFL but to put all that work in to transform his body he had to be healthy to do it and that is a sure sign that he is healthy that he was able to complete that transformation and put that work in Kenyan green to me is the favorite to be the starting left guard because if healthy there’s a lot of skills there that made him a first round pick if the Texans hadn’t picked him in the first round I still believe he ends up going somewhere in the first round maybe not as high as the Texans selected him a couple of years ago but I still believe he would have been a first rounder he was thought to be Plug and Play ready to go from day one injuries have sort of derailed that let’s see what he can do with the opportunity and being healthy here in training camp Kendrick green if you remember was added to the Texans via trade before the season got going last year he ended up starting three games and played decently in those starts got hurt for the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers which was unfor it because he was having a good game against his former team that was not kind to him on the way out the door but Kendrick green is certainly in the competition he’s a veteran he’s played a lot of football he played with this team in this system last year at left guard which is not something Jared Patterson or Kenyan green can say in their resume to this point so Kendrick green certainly has an opportunity to find himself as the starting left guard for this team he’s also a key contributor from a depth standpoint because he could play those interior offensive line spots including backup center so say Jared Patterson ends up as the starting left guard Then Kendrick green can be a backup left guard can be a backup center can be a backup Right Guard though sha Mason basically never misses any time and finally that brings us to Jarrett Patterson now Patterson played really well for a rookie at the center position he did not have a good off season ahead of his rookie year he was got beat up at the Senior Bowl uh it wasn’t a super impressive Senior Bowl performance from Patterson the Texans snagged him late and by virtue of a bunch of injuries they had to go out there and start him and he played pretty well he played great considering he was a rookie in a brand new system and the level of competition that he had to go against so Patterson is a name to pay attention to again I don’t believe he’s going to beat Scruggs for the center position so he’s going to have to factor into the left guard position and maybe is just most comfortable ending up as the backup center for this team but Patterson should be in the conversation because of the success he had albe at the center position last year but if you can succeed there I would hope that you’d be able to transform and translate some of that into the left guard position so green V green V Patterson for that left guard spot and the losers are ultimately going to end up as some depth pieces on this team a lot of options for left guard and the losers will be clear backups and depth for this team as well so that’s position number two in the position battles want to take a minute for my friends at Platinum AC and heating Dwayne will take care of you the best service in town the best prices in town position battles how about backup running back now this one’s a super important one backup running back is up for grabs Damen Pierce versus jaar Jordan versus British Brooks the third-year player trying to bounce back from a soft sophomore slump versus the two rookies one drafted one undrafted now why is running back two so important to this team well you’ve got Joe Mixon as running back one that is guaranteed that’s easy to see and understand that Joe Mixon is the one on this team and Mixon can carry the ball quite a bit he’s finished in the top seven eight in carries a handful of times in his career he’s a productive back he’s a durable back he can carry the ball a lot but you still need a second running back you still need a guy that can change pace for Joe Mixon and give him a little bit of a breather especially if the Texans are GNA say have big leads grind out opponents with the rushing attack they’re going to need more than just one running back so who’s running back number two and can you trust him well Damen Pierce has the inside track to that running back two spot he has to bounce back from 2 23 if he is as close to 2022 Damen Pierce as many hope he can be then it’s open and shut Damen Pierce is running back too and you’ll have a one-two punch of Mixon and Pierce but if it’s 2023 Damen Pierce he may not make the team 2023 Damen Pierce didn’t physically look right he didn’t run over people the yards after contact wasn’t there the vision that was necessary to operate this offense wasn’t there and he was open about his struggles at the position and picking up the offense he was open about it throughout the course of the Season he’s had an off season tra changed his body a little bit looks like he’s trimmed up a little bit and bit more muscular in good shape and then he has to have spent time getting to understand and learn this offense to maximize what the offense is giving him so that he doesn’t have to try to just Bowl through people or run people over hit the holes understand the Zone scheme and execute the way that Bobby slowick and the offense needs Damen Pierce to execute and he’s going to be running back too and if not one of these rookies might have a shot I’d give the edge if it’s not pierced to jaar Jordan he’s had some experience in zone schemes the Scout on him from the Athletics danne bugler in his rookie scouting profile is he’s the type of guy that can hit singles and doubles and triples until ultimately it’s a home run running the football he’s got some special teams usefulness as well with a couple of kickoff returns for Touchdown when he played at Lou Ville so jar Jordan is the one to me and he’s claimed okay Jordan after running a 45640 at the combine he’s claimed that he is much faster and probably closer to the four threes well if that’s the case and he’s got vision and he showcases it in training camp they him running back too I’m not worried about that if he shows it enough in training camp make jar Jordan running back too and have him be a helper on special teams sometimes then have him be that guy that’s a change of pace the spell back for Joe Mixon I’m certainly not worried about him being a rookie if he showcases it in training camp now he was a late round pick the other rookie at running back was an undrafted free agent but he was a highly compensated undrafted free agent the Texans paid British Brooks the most of some of the undrafted free agents in all of football and you see when you look at him versus jard Jordan you see why he’s here he’s a different type of running back than jard Jordan I think the the um biographies have them listed at 30 pounds difference it looks like much more it looks like they play different positions when they’re standing next to each other for British Brooks he’s got to be that Bruiser he’s got to be physical he’s got to be able to execute the offense from day one he has an uphill battle because I don’t know how well he’s going to be able to catch the football limiting his ability to be running back three which is probably gonna be occupied by Dar agumba W or jaar Jordan and I don’t know how much he can help out on special teams so he’s got to go in there be a hammer be a thumper uh execute the offense the way that Bobby SL needs it to get executed and even then he might need a little luck with some of the other guys not playing as well for him to end up as running back two on this team or maybe even to just end up on the team though I’d think about him for the practice squad if I was the Houston Texans that’s the running back competition for running back two and our third of four position battles our fourth position battle is a Battle Royal it is anybody and everybody for the defensive tackle spots I I have four players on the image but it could literally be all of the defensive tackles I do not believe that defensive tackle is going to be a starter like a traditional starting spot I feel like the Texans are going to heavily use defensive tackle as a matchup mechanic when guys need to be in there for pass rush it’ll be two different guys versus when they want to stop the run versus when it’s sort of a 5050 for the opponents what are they going to do are they going to run are they going to like I think the mixing and matching with the defensive tackle is going to be prevalent over the course of this season but somebody’s got to get the nod somebody’s got to run out the tunnel when they announce defense at defensive tackle so here are the contenders Foley fatukasi is the guy that I believe is for sure going to be a starter so to speak he’s the highest compensated defensive tackle on the team if you leave out to niiko Ay which I do because he’s a defensive end though autri will slip inside and play defensive tackle from time to time uh fatukasi is the guy that has played played the most uh among some of these other guys as well as um paid the most so paid a lot played a lot it kind of you put two and two together unless he’s just awful in training camp fatukasi feels like the type of guy that’s gonna start so at leav three other names to kind of be the guy next to him I think Tim settle is a guy that certainly is going to be in consideration and him and fatukasi would be the biggest nastiest Duo that they could put inside settle looks huge looking at him in the spring practices he is a large individual he plays pretty big he had a couple of moments where he was just stoning people on the offensive line where he was just kind of locking out holding offensive lineman in the place and kind of maneuvering them getting them into running back Lanes or getting them into CJ str’s uh you know throwing Lanes or the way that he was looking so settle’s the guy to me that’s kind of leaning towards being the defensive tackle next to fasi as sort of the starter but khil Davis and Kurt hiners certainly have an opportunity Davis and hinish obviously know the system whereas settle and fatukasi are going to have to be learning it Davis came on strong last year as a former UFL defensive tackle he ended up in the conversation and as a player that could be of use on a semi-regular basis for the Texans some games they played him a lot you know he played a little bit more in a few games in some games he made an impact playing around 20% of the snaps at defensive tackle team brought him back in fre agency I am intrigued to see what Davis can bring to the table little pass rush prowess to him I know he only has a couple of sacks from last season but he was able to push the pocket and get after the quarterback a couple of times Kurt hinish again has to lean on the fact that he’s been in the NFL for a few seasons he’s familiar with this team and he’s familiar with the system he’s got to go out there and showcase something or Kurt hinish not only isn’t gonna be a starter Kurt Hines may not make this team but familiarity with the system and the team and what to expect that does give him a leg up over some of the new names even if they are maybe a little bit more talented or a little bit more experienced across the NFL level heish had some good moments hinish had some bad moments where kind of teams picked on him a couple of times last year I’ll be intrigued to see what he can bring to the table as well there’s a number of other names that we haven’t talked about at defensive tackle but Mario Edwards is a guy that’s in the conversation mctelvin agum is a player that got a un you know prompted praise from Nick cerio in the spring when he was talking about some of the spring workouts ferus Payne and Marcus Harris are rookies that are guys that could make an impact here at the defensive tackle spot those names I mentioned probably not starters but again I’m calling the defensive tackle starting spot a battle royale spot ultimately the winners and the guys who are going to play the most are the ones that don’t freelance and execute exactly what the defense needs them to execute it’s imperative that these defensive tackles do exactly what the defense is designed to do so it allows the denil Hunter and Will Anderson pass rush Duo to do exactly what they need to do aiz Al Shire and Christian Harris at linebacker to take care of their business this is a Dirty Work position and there’s going to be some big uglies doing the dirty work and I say big ugly affectionately I like the big uglies you know they don’t always get the attention especially defensive tackles all the sacks and stuff off the edge hey the defensive tack will set a lot of that up with some of that Dirty Work Well the two guys to do the best Dirty Work be the two guys that are starting at defensive tackle and that’s position battle number four what say you 1. I think Lassiter is going to win the job. If he can continue to practice and produce like he did in mini camp he going to win the job.

I heard that CJ Henderson been having a pretty good camp as well.

If Lassiter and Henderson continues to produce it looks like Okudah not making the team.

    Great video as always Cody

  2. I’m so happy man, I get to watch my Texans August 1st and my birthday is on the 9th, I’m excited asf to watch the position battles during training camp too man

  3. Rooting for Kenyan. Highly curious about jawarJordan. I'm Really hoping the kid from USC shows up and pushes Pitre to have a bounce back year! Big uglies will be just fine. Good stuff Spanky.

  4. At work so can’t hear if you mentioned it yet, but will you be at camp tomorrow? I know it’s not public but I assume some media will be there

  5. Depends how good or bad henderson and okudah are if he starts this year or not. Eather way lassiter is gnna be a great addition for the future
