The REAL REASON behind the coaching change… – Habs at TOP of new prospect ranking
the Montreal Canadians have made a huge coaching decision as they’ve hired former Columbus head coach Pascal vanol to take over for the Laval rocket we have the real reason why they did this including some pretty awesome details from his past that we think are going to pay off really really well for the Montreal Canadians we’re going to get into all of that plus Scott wheeler one of the foremost draft experts at the athletic did his top 100 drafted players rankings in terms of prospects and Montreal is right there at the top of the list but they still have a couple people that I feel like they’re underrating and disrespecting just a bit we’re going to get into all that coming up on this episode of habs digest we’re not going to waste any time Jesse and we’re going to start and look not going to sugarcoat it I don’t agree with all this now there’s some stuff I do agree with that we’ll get into early but you guys will see the players that we don’t agree with coming up later so Scott wheeler again a foremost draft expert at the athletic he took a list of the top 100 skaters that have been drafted but have not become full-time NH others yet so basically top 100 prospects and we’re going to start with our boy Ivan deav right there at number three Jesse I don’t want to spend too much time on him though I think the fans love when we speak about him the blur up he wrote on demidov was amazing I just never get tired of seeing him this high and even though he was drafted fifth Scott wheeler does not care he has him third of all drafted prospects I just I can’t get over how excited I am for this guy love see him at number three there we know he deserves that respect you know for me I’d even I’d even risk kind of putting him in that top tier with KN really I think over the test of time right like mlin has that two-way game but demidov’s you know offensive game game is just going to shine I think that you know quickly he’s going to get a reputation for just being a star in this league but interesting to know Joshua we have this up you know of demov being a couple inches taller and also 20 pounds heavier than mov now that’s that’s considerable right like I really I think we got our guy you know I think that K Hughes did it well yeah absolutely we GNA spent too much time on to meet off because that’s where we think he should be and it’s great to see some love from other people but this next guy I don’t think he’s as high as he should be I’m kind of getting tired of people seeing Lane Hudson a guy who put up just unbelievably historic numbers in the NCAA a guy who in two NHL games very small sample size I understand that but looked absolutely phenomenal yeah he’s small he’s still 510 161 he’s small he’s skinny he’s going to have to work through that to be a long-term impactful NHL player but to have him Below guys like ym and senica while those guys are amazing prospects nothing against them but to be in a whole tier below I I’d have Hudson higher I’m not saying he needs to be top 10 or anything I think some people could make that argument there’s a really big varying opinion on him Jesse but I don’t know this is one of the guys on the list that I’m just not super thrilled with he’s coming in at tier four on this list I’m thinking you know in my opinion I’d have them in tier number two tier number three at the very worst right but we’re seeing the likes of you know Zan perck and in tier two and for me in terms of like offensive production what they’re capable of doing I see them as being similar players and you know with the an impact that you know laying only with two games has really shown those two games still matter being able to do it you’re still playing against NHL players there’s something to be said for that so you know for sure we’re GNA see that respect for him grow this is only the last offseason where they can get away with that after the season after they watch him a full year in the NHL they’re going to be singing a different T yeah to be fair there is a lot of respect shown to Montreal on this list again being tied for the most amount of players on this list with Columbus and San Jose with six players each and again you got Beck and St there’s a lot of habs mentioned but one there was a little annoying but that’s okay we’ll move on to a couple other guys Jesse I wanted to talk about and that’s David reinbacher and Michael ha and they’re very close to each other at 38 and 41 respectively um ha obviously it’s a bit early to tell but being around Matthew St was not that bad considering how kind of Highly I view Matthew sew and if you put that into a vacuum it’s it’s pretty good Ryan bucker at 38 feels maybe a bit low but I guess I can understand if you’re an outsider looking in and he still looks like he can be quite a good player but had a pretty brutal season and you got to like some bias starts to sneak in there based on Power Rankings but uh again I feel like Ryan Bacher probably should be a bit higher but then again I feel like there’s no one on this list for the Habs I’m gonna say no no that’s that’s about right you know yeah this is probably a case of being a little bit lower on Ryan Bacher and being a little bit higher on ha but honestly I get the love for ha though for me he looks like a dynamic player he suits the way that the NHL has played so well today with just his ability to really get around the eyes with the skills to really finish it once he’s there um you know so definitely happy to see them still getting some love all the same Ryan Bacher maybe would be nice if he was a little higher up yeah for sure now the final guys I want to mention are the final guys on this list for Montreal and it has a few people up in arms Joshua ha at 68 despite already being an NHL and Logan Mayu at 79 at the bottom of tier five based on the tier list we did live with you guys yesterday I think a lot of you will have Logan Mayu a lot higher than that there was a vote to put him into a tier uh in the Habs Prospect list so hey we’ll see about Mayu Scott is a bit lower on him but Joshua W is the one Jesse I got a got a buddy at work who’s who’s very very high on Joshua W again we’ve already seen him basically be a middle six guy in the NHL with potential to get better his IQ is incredible this is one of those guys that like the the whole blurb is completely positive right like oh he’s improved so much I guess it’s just there’s a lot of really good prospects in the NHL but for these two guys like I don’t know the these are the two guys that I think might even be more egregious than something like a rybach I feel like they can be up at least 10 or 12 maybe even 15 spots each but then again I’m sure some of that is is due to my bias for sure and they’re going to climb these rankings for sure especially with Joshua wild like the big thing about him that he improved in his game was just really like his work ethic he had this skill but then he brought just that hard work to his game so for me Josh I’m thinking that this is what’s going to enable him that that characteristic to really take that next big jump is he’s goingon to bring that hard work that mentality like my seat isn’t guaranteed he is working so hard this offseason to really improve and that’s for me what really impressed me going back to the world Jays you know a couple years back was like I saw the skill but also that hard work that tenacity jump you know diving on the ice sometimes to make a play I was like okay that’s a special player though when you have skills and then you kind of have that tenacity like that for me I see a player that’s definitely going to be climbing up but you know we’ll see this over time I think another player that’s going to be getting some respect very soon for sure let us know your thoughts on this list down below again we’re going to be talking a bit about Fowler tomorrow he’s probably going to be the only guy that’s on the top 20 goalies list I foresee dobash or vogan or any of those guys making it but hey we’ll have to just wait and see the other topic we got to talk about today Jesse is is this coaching change honestly this does change a lot because JF fo of course left for Clarkson University he got an incredible offer from his Alma moer can’t blame him for leaving but left Montreal in a bit of a scramble to fill that AHL coaching position and today well they did it and they filled it with Pascal Von the Laval native he has been named head coach of the Laval rocket now we know he had a very interesting history with the Columbus Blue Jackets in a pretty tumultuous season we’ll get into that in a bit Jesse but I wanted to actually open this with a quote from John Sedwick um of course very high up in the Habs organization he said with nearly 30 years of coaching experience at the qmjhl AHL and NHL levels Pascal brings a wealth of knowledge a passion for the game and a proven track record of both winning and Player Development and I want to focus on this because there’s there’s a lot of people that I think were questioning and maybe rightfully so Pascal Von being hired but what Cedric said is true and when you look into his P Pascal vanol has a a knack for coaching at the Junior and even at the lower levels like the AHL this guy won general manager of the year in the qmjhl he won coach of the year the next year in the qmjhl he was the coach of the year in 201718 for the Manitoba moose in the AHL that team had the likes of Kyle Connor in his last season where he even played in the AHL he was a full-time NHL That season basically played four games there guys like Mason Appleton NHL level goalies like Michael Hutchinson Eric comry there’s a lot of guys Sammy niku there’s a lot of great players on that team he has the pedigree for it Jesse and I didn’t realize I guess that vanel had this kind of background at the AHL and at the Q level to help with prospects that are maybe going to the NHL or guys that are right below the NHL that need that boost and I think this must have played a huge role not only that he’s a leval native but a huge role in in why Montreal decided to pick him for this position yeah it’s a big win here and you have to feel like it’s a little bit of a homecoming not just from Laval but also played all his minor hockey in Laval somebody that also has NHL head coaching experience now like if we’re looking at this from the surface like obviously this is a perfect fit this is something really important to get right to get a coach that can really kind of share the vision that you have for this organization and some havs fans they might be worried a little bit they’re like okay but this guy didn’t really play a lot of the younger guys too much in Columbus right but we have to understand maybe a little bit of a different Mandate of what was going we can’t say what was going on for the Columbus Blue Jackets you know definitely a lot of things a tough season picking up for my Babcock Babs you know during that season there so definitely had a lot of things going against him for sure but with the Habs he knows that his mandate that his job first and foremost is to develop those younger players and Pascal Vincent you know when getting hired in his interview he said something very telling I think about the Montreal Canadians organization as a whole Jeff Gordon K Hughes and he said that they know what they want to achieve but also they know how to achieve it they have this Clarity of vision of what they want to do that’s really clear for everybody in the system you know keeping kind of styles of play similar to that a all so for me this is really encouraging not just for Laval but also just that you know people coming into this system are really recognizing the culture and also The Talented players and and systems that we have in place yeah exactly I think he’s going to be a perfect fit and your com the comments that he said about that you’re absolutely right were amazing I also have this quote here he said the team made good picks the last couple years and there are many who have joined or will join the team I’m really excited about the quality of players we’re going to bring a work ethic and values and we’re going to try to push these young players the Canadian’s Vision corresponds with mine I think it’s a fantastic fantastic hire now there is the whole thing with Columbus that I’m going to brief here this is from an old athletic article on this way out of course we we are going to highlight some of the negatives but again this was at the NHL level with an organization whose Vision was not nearly as clear as Montreal’s eight-year contract for Damon Severson was benched in the third period of his third game in Columbus Lon was the healthy scratch in November which he said was the most embarrassing moment of his career Gad was benched murin was a Third String Goalie Jack rosovich was in healthy scratch so there’s a lot of question marks for good reason around Pascal vessel but I think what you’ve outlined Jesse and what we’ve outlined here is to show that he knows what he’s doing for sure like he has an eye for the game he has a mind for the game especially at the AHL level especially at the junior level and I think that at the end of the day I think we owe him a bit of leeway I don’t I think the people judging him right off the B give him some time because you know it’s hard to hard to get acclimated to a new coach but again I I’m just I’m sure you agree with I think this is a signing that could end up paying very big dividends absolutely you know a new GM getting a new coach in Columbus I don’t think we should be too quick to kind of you know just summarize his coaching career that’s pretty power for the course you know what’s interesting to note as well is that pasal Vincent might have had opportunities for another NHL coaching job whether that’s head coaching most likely assistant coach but other level you know in the NHL but it’s because he was kind of let go a little bit later on right when a lot of those vacancies have been filled so a lot to be said of you know having somebody at your AHL who very well easily could have already had a position at the AHL level so bringing lots of experience again coming from Laval you can’t really buy that you know that familiarity that that family culture and everything else that we’re looking to build so I’m very excited for this hire he said he grew up 10 minutes from PL spell that’s pretty amazing and hey he’s really highly regarded in a lot of organizations including the Winnipeg Jets organization and hey another coach from the Jets organization that was highly regarded just won a Stanley Cup so you never know what’s going to happen but let me know your thoughts down below about Pascal vanol and how this could impact the lval rocket and the Montreal Canadians future because Don’t really like the move but let Kent cook also Great video as always Love from Nova Scotia
he coached our home team the screaming eagles in the Q, this seems like it may be a good fit for the farm
Habs weren't in the top 10 in prospect rankings this time last year. Before the draft they were ranked top 3. Goes to show how underrated our prospects have been
I like the move. Vincent has something to prove in terms of developing players, especially if he wants a chance at a future job in the NHL. I’m sure part of the process involved making it clear that they’re in the process of developing players.
Pascal Vincent is an interesting hire! Some negativity about his style, but he cant be any worse than the guy he replaced in Columbus 😅
No worries about Hutson being ranked lower, he's been doubted his whole career so far! As for Roy, I'm not sure he is not a lock this year…more competition this camp.
You guys made me feel a bit better about the coach change, hope you're right! 🤞
Thanks guys
I don't like the Pascal Vincent hire gives me a bad feeling.
A friend of mine had worked for the Montreal Juniors and told me he felt Vincent was a bad coach added to the fact he had a real hard ass approach in Columbus. I don't like it. I hope I am wrong and he is a great coach for the young prospects.
By most accounts he's a real wanker and a type A personality that nobody likes. But hey keep pretending Kent can't do no wrong. Just think the Habs could have had Michkov and Demidov for years to come, but they are stuck with a doofus RD that may crack the second pairing and be a shutdown blueliner. LOL Kent
Another video for the sake of making a video.
Hey Josh! Laurent here, it was nice to see you on Sallabery Street in Québec City! Come hang out at my shop 190 Dorchester next time you're around to talk habs! Cheers!
Grant McCagg posted on twitter an incredible stat on Ivan’s goals against average while on the ice. Incredible… he is no one trick pony
Hudson isn't a top tier. Not a 1-2 defenseman. Accurate list. Roy is a 3/4 liner. Too much homerism whining in this video.
There's no questions around Vincent and the Blue Jackets. In the NHL, your job is to win. If your players aren't performing, then you take measures, if those measures don't work, then you take the next step and bench them. Columbus isn't a very good team at all, there has been a lot of mistakes made building the Jackets. Vincent was thrust into a bad situation, with Babcock unable to not be an a-hole, jerk, and someone without respect for his players. He didn't coach one game, and the assistant coach was thrust into it, and he was doing what he could to try to get the team into a winning position. I don't think Babcock would have been able to do much better, beyond his experience. The Blue Jackets weren't a contender, but Vincent ain't no Ducharme.
VP has been a loser the last couple of years, and treating prospects poorly during his NHL stint. The Laval team was a shitshow forever, hopefully, he achieves
Don't worry about where Hutson is. He will be just fine when he comes to Montreal. His size scares people off
It’s different circumstances from the AHL to NHL
Lets see where these players are at 1 year from now …Then we'll see if these clowns know what they're talking about .!! I like the Rocket coach hire ..He brings immediate respect .. and has motivation to succeed..!! A win win .!
