Did the leafs at one point have the logo on the front and back of jerseys?

I was looking through a book about leafs historical moments and came across this picture of Charlie Conacher wearing a jersey with the logo on both sides. Does anyone know if this was just for press or if it was actually worn in games?

  1. Yeah, back when the name on the front of the jersey meant the same as the one on the back.

  2. I think they only did this for promotional pictures – Looking at the 1930’s era jerseys they all had numbers on the back and that’s the decade that Conacher played for us… and given that jersey look I’m guessing this is from his last year in the 37/38 timeframe.

  3. They had to put them on both sides because everything was black and white back then so it was the only way players could tell who was on their team. /s

  4. Off topic – but this reminds me of Harold Ballard (unfortunately) when the NHL started requiring the name plate to be added to the back of all sweaters, Harold didn’t obey the rule for two season iirc, because he didn’t want his game program sales to drops.
