Nate misy joins uh where we talk about his path uh his hockey path getting drafted by the Sharks uh learn a little bit about his time at development camp and kind of his you know next step and going back to Victoria and of course get to know him off the ice a little bit so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as the playoffs are now done the Sports Stop sporting like we want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so visit fanduel.com uh to get started and now I’m joined by one of the newest San Jose Sharks Nate misy how’s it going buddy it’s going well thanks for having me on not to yes appreciate it I know it’s been a pretty crazy time for you the past couple weeks uh with the draft and development camp and everything like that I’m sure you’re uh kind of starting to catch your breath right now so uh let me ask you what I always ask ask the first question when did you realize like hockey could be a thing for you yeah I mean growing up I think uh as you play higher levels um you realize that it can become more of a future for you and more of a the thing you’re going to do um and yeah I think uh you know moving away at a young age um I think I realized that and uh I had the opportunity to do some pretty cool things with hockey so um yeah I kind of realized that that’s gonna that could be a path for me uh your favorite player growing up ah my favorite player growing up was always Patrick Sharp he’s a forward um but uh for defenseman I always watch Brent Burns growing up so it was kind of funny how it worked out when he was at the Sharks yes uh Patrick Sharp I know uh yes very uh if I recall correctly I think he spent a little bit of time with the with who did he play anyway uh I know he played for for Chicago for a while and yeah I think he bounced around for a little bit including the Flyers that’s right uh I remember playing in the old NHL games he was always like a one of the like guys on the Flyers like roster guys but uh so Brett Burns though you you mentioned him is he the guy you try to model your game after or was he just your favorite guy to watch yeah I think so I mean I take a lot from uh whoever I can but definitely him uh just his size his Mobility his ability to kill plays and get up the ice I think uh just something I took in into my game and tried to model it after so uh yeah definitely him for sure uh it’s crazy how that dude just never misses a game right like how like just not tweaking your ankle not doing anything like that like just how he’s there at night in night out it’s it’s crazy right yeah it’s it’s pretty impressive so I mean that’s definitely a hard thing to do but uh yeah really impressive yeah I know that guy’s like an absolute Maniac when it comes to to like taking of his body and prepping and everything like that I’m sure you’ve seen the big backpack that he carries like uh what who knows what he carries in there but yeah it’s that guy does a a a a lot to make sure he continues to play uh he’s like six weeks older than me which makes me really sad but anyway uh when you are playing at your best what do you think that looks like yeah I mean I see myself as a two-way Defender um I like to take care of the defensive Zone first uh when I’m on my best I’m killing every play possible um making hits being physical on the ice making sure there’s a presence known that I’m out there and uh yeah hopping in when I can to create some offense I think uh I have that offensive ability um I see the ice very well so uh making those passes out of the Zone definitely a big thing for my game so uh I have to ask you’re from Melfort what’s a Melfort um yeah I’m from Melfort Saskatchewan um I grew up there played there my minor years until I moved away um yeah it’s like a small town uh 6,000 people maybe yeah I was gonna say like five or six thousand people that is a tiny tiny area right yeah so I mean we have a junior a team there in the sjl um yeah kind of just grew up watching them uh kind of around the town um but yeah it’s just a tiny town that yeah grew up in my families grew up in my dad my mom so uh just continue to live there uh all right so of course uh you were an over rager did you go to the draft of Nashville last year or did you just kind of hang out last year uh no last year I did not go to the draft uh I didn’t go this year either actually so uh so yeah yeah if I recall you were on the golf course right when uh when you found out you got drafted uh yeah I was I was up in h b with my uh dad and my brothers so how are you shooting that day uh I wasn’t shooting the best I mean you always have an eye on the draft uh just kind of watching who goes uh obviously some buddies Go stuff like that so uh you always want to keep an eye on it congratulate them um but yeah it wasn’t too bad it was a pretty nice uh pretty nice golf course up there so I was pretty happy to play it yeah I was gonna say like uh I’m sure you’re either playing out of your mind or you’re probably just kind of just playing just to keep your mind uh you know off the draft and stuff so what was I mean you found out uh what was kind of the rest of the day like for you after you found out that you were drafted uh yeah it was kind of a whirlwind of stuff um yeah we finished up our golf game uh obviously a lot of texts a lot of calls um from people but yeah just kind of finish up our golf games there wasn’t great service out there so uh that was kind of tough but um yeah finished that up and then just went back to our hotel uh and just yeah uh hung out with my my dad and my brothers uh went out for a nice dinner and uh kind of celebrated their that way um and then yeah I mean it it turned in pretty quick to development Camp so that was going to be my yeah my next s so yeah you’re you know you get drafted on Saturday and then you’re showing up for development camp on Monday right uh is it just like when does it hit you that like this is real uh yeah I think um I mean I don’t even know it’s like it’s still pretty still pretty Fresh So I mean still thinking about it um still in the back of your head just like being like like this really happened and it’s big opportunity so uh yeah I think you’ll obviously realize that you have some time on the plane just to think about it kind of to yourself um which is nice but yeah just kind of still takes time to hit you so uh aisle seat or window seat on the plane depends on if I’m sleeping or not if I’m sleeping I’m taking a window seat an aisle uh it’s nice lag room so yes uh yeah it is a trade-off uh where there between the aisle and the window but especially for a guy like you a little bit taller there so yeah I’m sure that leg room is uh definitely needed uh when on those especially those longer flights but all right uh so you get to development Camp uh who were you who was your roommate uh Ethan Cardwell okay uh Cardwell OHL guy was the uh Barracuda kind of Rookie of the Year and N of the year last year so what did you think of of Cardwell he’s a pretty cool dude isn’t he yeah super nice uh he was awesome I mean getting in the room with an older guy like that kind of knows his way around San Jose too um kind of just learn things from him uh pick up things and he is like super super nice guys um yeah I was really happy that I got to room with somebody like him uh just kind of show me around and um just somebody to talk to somebody that’s been there um that’s probably the best thing he can ask for so yeah also over Ager like yourself so he’s kind of been through the the same process that you have of missing you know not getting drafted but then kind of coming back and like I said he’s he’s had a great season with the Barracuda last year so um all right guys before we continue with Nate uh we talk more about development Camp I get to know about his is time at Victoria I just need to take a quick break I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but with the playoffs all but done we get fewer games and the sports aren’t sportsing like I want them to but FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream out big bets any time I’m in the mood this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com and start making the most of your summer fandal official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball you I I they or the Sharks put out a video of a you guys had a big cooking Challenge and your team won um who pulled the who who was the the kind of the captain of that or the head chef of that uh I don’t know like we kind of had a a plan um there was two of us cooking the burger two of us making the Smoothie so um it was definitely a a team effort there I’d say we all kind of chipped in in our own way it kind of made the burger a little bit differently so um and the Smoothie too um yeah and I obviously it worked out I think uh there yeah we worked together really well so I know as sound like some other guys said Halton and definitely kind of knows his way around the kitchen I think so I mean he was he was pretty good uh making the burgers there so I was pretty impressed that’s yeah I think you know for him because he he did play the men’s league for a little bit maybe he’s got a little experience there cooking um a little bit there so um what was your thoughts of you know I know it was only a couple days what was your thoughts of of San Jose yeah it’s nice city um it’s definitely hot out there um it’s a little bit different from down here in Canada where I’m from but uh yeah definitely enjoyed it um getting to see different things uh I went down and saw Santana R stuff like that um just kind of the downtown area uh yeah it’s kind of it was cool to see I mean love to see different places and experience different things so uh was definitely a great experience uh when it’s January you’re wearing flip flops to the rink you’ll uh really appreciate it I promise you so it’s yeah the weather there yeah it’s just or you can go golfing in the winter like the weather there is uh it’s pretty bad pretty nice so so um all right of course we we as sharks fans right uh being at the actual Prospect scrimmage game right a lot of hype around of course M celini the first overall pick uh Will Smith what was your thoughts on seeing those two guys play yeah very impressive I mean seeing those guys I mean obviously they deserve everything they got uh they definitely worked for it um going first overall there Macklin um yeah that’s an impressive thing to do um you know you have to work your whole life to do that and uh definitely be somebody special something special on the ice and I think he showed a lot of that during Camp so uh it was definitely very impressive to see um and I get to know him so it was nice he seems like a pretty like I I mean I’ve talked to him you know through the media very like for an 18-y old kid you’re like this this guy is just not an 18-y old kid but I think there’s like a little bit of Personality maybe it doesn’t quite show the media yet yes or no maybe H I don’t know about that um he’s definitely a very nice kid um very nice guy um s yeah he just talks Lots he’s he’s nice to everybody I think uh yeah he just knows what he’s doing he’s he’s definitely matured and definitely definitely ready for it so all right your uh last season with Victoria you guys made to the playoffs for the first time in a while what was that experience like for you guys as a team that’s kind of you know hasn’t hasn’t maybe had the the best SU uccess the past couple years but kind of breaking through and making to the playoffs yeah it was awesome I mean I think that was a big goal for us last year um especially having like a pretty young team uh yeah a lot of 18 year olds 17 year olds um it was a big goal just to make playoffs and obviously we wanted to do more in the playoffs uh had a pretty tough match up against Portland there um really good team a lot of lot of good guys on that team but uh yeah just like the experience of playing playoff haw he was it’s nice to get that experience especially coming into the next year so uh Luca kenon he’s pretty good right very good yeah uh he I know he uh he came out on fire against uh you guys that first like two games I think he had like two goals or three goals like the first two games it was just like uh yeah he was he was he was feeling it wasn’t he yeah he’s definitely a um a game changer in the in the series and in every game that I watched him play so uh there’s a bunch of you kind of like WHL guys you know especially in this draft right uh you like Colton Roberts who is dra also uh here you have uh wch you got how well do you kind of know some of the other guys who are drafting the WHL they’re now going to be potentially your future team teammates uh yeah I mean I know col uh decently well I mean just not personally um a little bit during Dev Camp there uh but yeah just playing against him so much he he’s in Van uh short little trip over so we definitely play them a lot so I got to know his game and him a little bit through that um and then wet yeah uh I have some buddies that are friends with him um on different teams so uh definitely heard about him and uh know a little bit about him and then uh getting to connect with those guys at Camp was awesome so it was a really good experience with that uh Carson W he seems like a dude you don’t want to mess with from all all accounts even like during his like media availability just like talked about how he just yeah he likes that that kind of part of the game uh is it nice to have that it’s nice to have that guy on your team but you hate playing against him right H yeah definitely um I mean we’re lucky enough to only play against him once a year so uh that’s pretty nice but yeah definitely definitely a physical player out there uh you definitely notic him all right uh you’re heading you know expected to head back to Victoria this season uh what are your kind of the expectations for this team you mentioned they’re kind of a young team starting to grow up um is it you know kind of playoffs try to play through a couple rounds and see what happens uh yeah we’ve made a lot of changes in Victoria this year um so I think it’s going to be really well um we have a lot of different players coming in a uh a lot of different Talent so I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s going to be like at Camp um definitely going to be a competitive team um especially at Camp seeing who makes it who doesn’t uh uh yeah but I’m looking forward to playing with the guys and I think we can take a big step forward in playoffs and the regular season this year so uh I’m definitely looking forward to that the most all right uh of course you played with gon lck I know he was kind of hurt that season when you guys played uh sharks pick playing with the be Cuda last year uh what’s your best G The Rock story ah um so my first 16-year-old year uh I was affiliate player um but actually when we came up uh I would live with a rock so it was kind of funny how how it worked out but um yeah that was during the co year so um we had to like just right after the co um Bubble season um but yeah we kind we had to quarantine together kind of in the house um just upstairs uh it was definitely it was definitely an interesting time pretty fun so uh yeah it it was good to get to know him um obviously got to know him really well through that and uh throughout him being there in his 19-year-old season so uh obviously it was hard not having him back with us this year but um he’s doing great things so uh yeah he’s an awesome guy and I’m I’m glad I got to like experience that quarantine bit with a pretty good guy on the team so yeah uh all right one of my favorite things about you of course Junior Hockey and you know CHL and stuff is uh you guys get to wear a bunch of fun different jerseys so give your three favorite Royals jerseys oh that’s a tough one um I think just our alternate ones this year um the blue was pretty pretty awesome I mean going to that color just so so bright on the ice uh you just notice it just thinks it look looks really good um other than that uh our fan design ones are always pretty good um this year we kind of had like a super store one going um it was it was pretty impressive uh what the fans can draw up I was actually a a little kid’s brother on my team that Drew it so nice um yeah it’s pretty it was pretty funny but definitely a cool one to wear um and then obviously the pink and the rink jerseys um I think obviously our design team keeps making them better every year and they’re you’re always excited to see those and play for that cause so uh yeah definitely one of my favorites all right guys before we continue with Nate uh we get to know him off the ice a little bit of course socks and skates question uh just need to take a quick break we’re driven by the search for better but when it comes to hiring the best way to Pick of the break uh yeah you you those ones always no matter who does them and like they always look really really good uh with those ones so uh when you get to the uh the Barracuda like their I think my favorite one the Barracuda do are their uh uh like their Christmas the teddy bear toss ones like they always do a good good do a good job with those so um all right let’s get to a little bit off the ice here so uh pregame superstitions are you a super stitious guy little stitious guy or let it ride guy uh I’m not not very superstitious um I guess I do have a little bit of a timeline um kind of like when I want to nap stuff like that uh when I want to be at the rink um but other outside of that uh just kind of yeah go with how you’re feeling um obviously different days you’re feeling different things especially after playing back to back so uh definitely just kind of just like Let It Ride uh see how you’re feeling uh definitely keep those those certain timings in in check with my with my routine but yeah other than that just kind of let it ride I know the WHL every once a while you guys get the three and three uh the third day is like the worst day right definitely um especially especially when you’re traveling overnight uh it’s it’s difficult I remember my first year uh we traveled I think it was it was our second game I was either in Tri City or Spokane and then we had to play in Colona and it was an early game the next day it was like a four o’clock game so we we got in at like 5 6 a.m. and it was like yeah it was definitely a tough one but um yeah I mean you strive the schedule yeah the schedule is what it is I know sometimes they try to they do their best but yeah sometimes those three and threes are are brutal I like I you guys are you guys are warriors when it comes to that so uh coffee pregame are you a coffee guy yes or no uh yeah I am iced or hot or depends on the weather uh always hot I go with before GES so that’s the correct answer always hot ice cream uh socks and skates uh are you a Monster who does not wear socks with your skates I’m not uh I I don’t I don’t really like my skin or touching my equipment so um kind of layer up but uh do you know anybody who does or they like or have you seen anybody who does who wears these socks no socks with their skates ah yeah I know a couple guys that do and I just I don’t know how they do it um red flag right the biggest red flag that’s what would hurt the feet so all right uh we’ll get you your last couple ones uh when you’re not trading or playing what’s your favorite uh thing to do in the off season uh when I can um I like to go home see my family uh go to the lake with them stuff like that uh love to go golfing with them so I think that’s something that I I always like to do but other than that hang out with buddies and just kind of see different things um obviously maybe take the odd weekend trip if I can or something like that but yeah definitely just hang out um see my family when I can see my buddies stuff like that all right uh last show you watched oh last show I watched uh I think I’m halfway through Ted lasso right now actually um pretty funny show um about soccer there uh the American coach so uh yeah just kind of watching that getting through that and uh I don’t even think it’s the first time I watched it so that I mean sometimes you just need that show that you just put on and it’s just like it’s that Comfort show that you can just kind of put on and zone out so totally understand that so all right we’ll get you out here on this last one uh I know you got a couple weeks before Camp starts any exciting plans uh to kind of finish out the summer uh no uh just just go home see my family stuff like that so I’m pretty excited about that um and then obviously getting back to Victoria um for training camp before taking off to San Jose there um yeah looking forward to that looking forward to seeing the new guys me and the guys from last last year again um catching up with them so uh Nate thank you so much for your time buddy uh best of luck and uh stay healthy this this season hopefully we see you in San Jose sooner rather than later yeah thank you very much I definitely hope to see you soon so all rights not what I want to do all right uh thank you guys for checking out my interview with Nate um thank you of course to the Victoria Royals for helping make this happen thank you to Nate for uh taking time out of his busy summer as he’s uh of course I’m sure still enjoying the uh the glow of being drafted and kind of the Whirlwind of the process and now kind of getting ready to to uh play a full season in the WHL so uh thank you to to everybody that behind the scenes that kind of make this process happen um than yeah Nate I’m I’m really excited for him and kind of what he does with Victoria this season you know I think he’s going to be a really you know interesting piece for the Sharks as they try to add some some quality depth and some uh some big and tough guys on the the Blue Line uh to help out your Luca Canon type of defenseman so hopefully this is the last year we see Nate and Victoria because he’ll be able eligible to play um next season with the Barracuda and hopefully has a good enough season where he can kind of make that jump so um he kind of has hopefully this is the path that we see him go on so um that’s gonna be it for me today I’ll be back tomorrow uh we’ll continue to kind of go through the offseason here get get you start getting ready for a new season that’s going to be upon us sooner rather than later so make sure you guys are follow along where you get Podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well uh follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon
