Position Preview: Defensive Backs | Cleveland Browns

Position Preview: Defensive Backs | Cleveland Browns

Nathan zura back with another Cleveland Browns position preview as we get ready for the start of training camp 2024 and of course 20124 Cleveland Browns season and today we’re going to look at the defensive backfield and I think the Browns have the best back end in the entire NFL and it starts with the cornerbacks you got the warden Denzel Ward the multiple time pro bowler you’ve got MJ Emerson who led the team with four interceptions a year ago you’ve got Greg Nome the former first rounder who had a couple of interceptions including that huge pick six in the come from behind win against against Baltimore the Browns have the best cornerback Trio in the National Football League they all excel in man coverage MJ Emerson last year a breakout sophomore campaign led the league in basically every metric that you would want a cornerback to lead in yards per Target yards per route run completion percentage allowed quarterback rating allowed in coverage he was top three in all of those categories and so with Warden on one side MJ on the other Greg in the slot this Browns defense is as good as it gets against the pass and that quarterback room though also has some pretty good depth and I think there are going to be some very difficult decisions for general manager Andrew Barry last year’s fifth round pick cam Mitchell out of Northwestern has shown promise as a nickel cornerback and they loved what they saw from him in his rookie season when thrust into action who can forget that trip up of Justin fields on fourth and one without that the Browns don’t beat the Bears so he had some big plays as a rookie they like him I think he’s cornerback number four now five and six that’s going to be interesting because the Browns have a couple ways they can go with this they’ve got more guys who are traditional corners but then they brought in two special team Aces Justin Hardy the Cleveland native as well as Tony Brown and Tony Brown not only a special teams Ace but also a very good corner and a guy with some familiarity with Bubba ventron so that looks like probably the sixth but there is going to be a lot of competition in that room let’s not forget khif halassi who was signed to the 53 last year and was on the 53 for the entire season former undrafted free agent who started the season with Kansas City and then at the 53 man cut down was released and signed by the Browns they love him as an outside corner so he certainly is in the mix they drafted miles Harden out of South Dakota state in this year’s draft so he’s going to be competing for a roster spot there’re also guys like daon Gales Vincent gray so I think you got four guys battling for two spots and this is going to be a very difficult room for general manager Andrew Barry to whittle things down and Brandon Lynch the Browns excellent quarterback coach he’s got so much talent in that room such a great teacher I know he’s going to maximize it and there are going to be some tough decisions at the 53 man cuts now you go to the safety position coach Bond he has got his whole group from a year ago all of them are back Juan Thornhill last year battled that calf injury he’s ready to have a monster season Grant delpin who missed the end of the year with an injury but he is ready to go got that new contract he looks phenomenal so far and then Rodney McLoud the veteran whose season ended with a torn bicep he’s back and then you got the two young guys who are thrust into action at the end of last year you got the two undrafted free agents DeAnthony Bell and Ronnie Hickman and who can forget Hickman’s pick six in the win over the New York Jets that propelled the Browns to the playoffs a year ago so those young guys got real good experience at the end of last year and showed they absolutely could be starters for this team so I think you got five safeties pretty much locked in there for the Cleveland Browns but as always there is competition so some of the guys who are probably competing at the quarterback spot they might want to show some safety versatility and Brady Breeze was also brought in during camp and he’s a guy that is going to fight to either stay in this program or try to push DeAnthony Bell or a rocket Hickman off of the 53 it’s going to be tough I I think that safety room is pretty well set I think the quarterback room at the top is pretty well set there are going to be some battles there in special teams it’s going to be so huge with that new kickoff rule so right now you probably have to give the advantage to the veterans Hardy and Tony Brown all right that’s a look at the Browns defensive backs an absolutely loaded group here and you got to be in the pass happy NFL in the year 2024 for the latest on your Browns keep it tuned to clean browns.com the Browns mobile app this has been our position preview looking at the defensive backs of the Cleveland Browns [Music]
