Charlotte Hornets rookie Tidjane Salaun records a double-double. Are these echoes of freakiness??

brought to you by game time game time download the game time app create an account use code log on NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms apply the Hornets are really 5-0 in summer league they haven’t lost a game yet it’s insane it it doesn’t feel like uh too long ago when the Hornets were like 0 and4 0 and5 in summer league and they flipped things completely around and I love it winning winning is good I’m just gonna go out on a limb hot take I don’t care if it’s summer league I don’t care if it’s preseason winning is good no it feels right I don’t know what this feeling is but being 5-0 does feel right I don’t want to to go away and I’m glad the Hornets continue to win 80 to 66 the Hornets beat the Denver Nuggets but let’s go to the main story line here because rookie ton Salon scores 10 points brings in 10 rebounds four offensive rebounds by the way he’s been good at that the last couple of games four of eight from the field one of four from three but he does hit his first three-pointer of summer league and he was excited about it yeah he gave the Tiger Woods F pump he plays he plays like I play video games I think a lot of fans are going to love that because so many guys come to the league now media polished and they’re they’re thinking about their image constantly and they don’t want to do anything that looks goofy or that would get memd and Salon doesn’t he’s thinking too much about the the game and wanting to make an impact to really think about what he looks like it’s great I hope he doesn’t ever lose that oh he’ll certainly lose it like the grind of the NBA and the media and the spotlight it just this is what I talk about with Brandon in the last game you know he’s being goofy on the sidelines and stuff eventually if they continue to win if they continue to compete and and the national media and the first takes of the world start to turn their attention to Charlotte all of that life will just be sucked out of them yeah as soon as he turns into if if there are echoes of freakiness and he somehow realizes that type of potential then it will be taken out of him but just hopefully there’s a cap on how much the joy and the effort is taken out of out of him this rookie season though he’s going to be flying like a crazy man out there on the court what did you make of salon’s efficient double double is what the term is being used on Twitter everybody is using efficient double double efficient double double what do you make of the efficient double double well yeah because I mean he’s he’s not shooting a ton you know he’s doing a lot of work on the boards and and cleaning up a few things and so yeah I mean that’s going to be efficient I think the Hornets are being efficient with his minutes uh they continued to restrict those minutes despite the fact that he started in this game because no Brandon Miller he’s done for the summer league and so he starts but he only gets a little under 19 minutes where leaky got 27 uh Nick Smith Jr got 26 Xavier Simpson got 32 they are going to squeeze everything that they can out of Xavier Simpson while they have the opportunity uh but tjan uh just gets a little under 19 but yeah four of eight from the field uh listen he’s he’s fullon energy intensity physicality he was uh he was out there when when rebounds were to be had he was putting body on body the thing that Clifford wouldn’t shut up about during both of his tenures here get hitting first getting a body on a body that is salon now his body I don’t know is all the way ready to hit but when it gets there it’s going to be devastated and in fact late in the game he got tossed To The Ground by a a Denver Defender and that Denver Defender got called for for a foul and and and I looked at that and I go you know with the way tan plays that is not going to be the last time that a player throws him down to the ground in frustration because he is a frustrating player to play against and I love it we do want somebody frustrating to play against and it’s not like so I go back to Cody Zeller these guys are not the same player but I go back to Cody Zeller oh no no no no they put it on the scroll Walker mail put it on wfnz.com Walker compares to John Salon to Cody Zeller remember how we would always talk about how players have to hate playing against him because he was sneaky dirty well they hated it so much they punched him in the face over and over again that’s right and then Cody would just you know nosy his way all in there again and then get a foul and it it felt like that it’s it’s a little more obvious with Salon who has more athleticism who can do more stuff on the perimeter I I do feel like we might have that similar quality from Salon yeah I think look you’re you’re seeing him go in there and just bleep stuff up that’s what you want from him to defensively you see the coast to coast now twice Doug where he’s put the ball on the deck and then grabb the rebound and and goes to the other end so I don’t know how much I trust him dribbling a whole lot but if you have enough space and Transit that’s right but so that’s this is where like the Echoes of freakiness they’re they’re not realized because Giannis or at least in in certain forms because Giannis can dribble right and we know that he grew we knew that he improved a lot in the NBA like I don’t it it’s hard for me to pick picture now the the fluidity that Giannis moves with for Salon to pick that up it’s hard for me to picture now the kind of handle it doesn’t mean that it won’t come it just means that it’s hard for me to picture that type of player in this player right now but there is the coast to coast ability that we’ve seen where he finishes through contact which is great we had the layup in the last game where he got bumped and then went to the line for an N1 opportunity but the transition game the corners the 5T out from the Baseline that’s where he’s going to make his living in the NBA and that means this season right his rookie year that’s where he’s going to make his living as long as he sees those minutes well so I think that a homework assignment for you and I because the games are going to dry up and we’re going to really get into the Silly Season where we are digging around for things to talk about until they get back to training camp I think one of our assignments should be to watch a little Giannis year one tape and see if some of that existed in his game as well because what I saw in if we’re we’re kind of putting this we started with the good let’s put the spotlight on some of the things that he has to work on there were moments when he got the ball he he would he would steal a rebound from from poor Jake Stevens uh poor unathletic Jake Stevens he would steal a rebound and then race down the court with no idea of like what am I going to do with the ball who’s with me is there anyone with me in transition at all and then the defense would just swarm him and and then whenever you put pressure on him in the open floor his body panics and so yes and he almost turned it over I only think he had one turnover in this game but he almost turned it over like three or four times in transition and so that’s learning the game the game slowing down him learning his body the fluidity maybe coming a little bit more in those moments when when players are making plays for him in transition when he’s running weak side and some something can happen for him that’s when he’s a lot more dangerous although we have seen Coast to Coast opportunities for him I just think as we get into preseason and into the regular season the bodies that he’s facing in transition are only going to get faster stronger and here’s the most important part they’re going to get smarter and so forcing him to you know hit that decision tree and so far you know he hasn’t been able to really deal with that effectively all the time and so that’s where his point of growth is but you know the Hornets are betting on all of that energy and intensity and work ethic that all of that stuff will get taken care of over time where maybe in other players that you could compare him to like Kai Jones it didn’t necessarily come together controlled is the word I think of doesn’t play with a whole lot of it right now but you’re hoping that of course that comes from him getting older he plays like me when I play my player on 2K I’m constantly calling for the ball I’m getting knocked you know they have like a player rating and you get knocked if you call for the ball I just completely ignore that I’m just like give me the ball I want it I want it now I want to score that is him right now he is a little he’s a little Chihuahua dog like bouncing all around it’s amazing it’s it’s fun to watch it’s not going to necessarily make for an effective NBA player immediately but like I I’m gonna buy the guy that has that kind of intensity figuring it out ultimately let’s get to two more things before we move on because I want to reserve the second segment for other summer league takeaways one defensively how do you feel like he played in this game again when I I think when he gets like a one-on-one matchup I think the the footwork is pretty solid he can stay in front of guys and bother guys with his size now again what does that look like in preseason when the body types are different when his matchups are going to be a little bit stronger and smarter that’s that’s a good question yeah off ball uh you know there’s some there’s some like I don’t know exactly he’s moving fast and and you T this is what made Brandon Miller so amazing in his rookie year was that he moved so smoothly calmly and just knew where to be and it almost looked like Brandon Miller was slow playing it but it wasn’t he just knew where he was supposed to be and so he didn’t have to constantly recover I think that’s what you’re seeing with Salon he’s constantly recovering trying to figure out where he’s supposed to be the three-point shot took four of them hit one so that was nice to see at least he he knocked in one but I think that is important because he’s going to have those opportunities it if I’m looking at this a lot from does he see the floor year one because we we know that this is a project I I’m trying to figure out exactly how much of a project this is going to be and how much realtime stuff he’s going to do as soon as he hits an NBA court so there are going to be shots for him do you trust him making Corner threes do you trust him making any kind of Threes And it was nice to see one go in he’ll get more opportunities in summer league build up that confidence we’ll see about what happens preseason before we get to the regular season but it was nice to see one go in I I’ll take yeah 25% right not good nobody wants a player shooting that only shoots 25% but at least he hit one and I’m I’m actually taking a positive away from him knocking down his first triple oh yeah so much is going to hinge on what does he do with this tape what does he do as he gets into the gym between now and training camp I think that we have to weigh the context of what the Hornets are building roster wise they they’ve signed some veterans you know this team is acting like they would like to beat expectations next year and so yeah I I get that he was drafted six overall but I think a guy coming from a championship organization is probably going to prioritize players that can help the team win and those are going to be the players that are just more controlled uh you know control being the buzzword here in in the first segment and so yeah I think it’s it it’s going to be difficult what we see now now maybe that changes again once we get into training camp but what we see now I think it’s going to be difficult to justify giving him significant minutes um early in his career okay coming up next on the lockdown Hornets podcast we’ll get to more summer league observations after a 5-0 start Nick Smith Jr what do we think about his performance against Denver Xavier simpser do we still love him Jake Stevens Doug still on the island we’ll talk about all that coming up [Music] can’t stand the fact that the Hornets exist as a franchise what was going on with Seth Greenberg on the call yesterday I I have no idea and I don’t think it was exclusively about Salon although yes he did go in pretty hard both of them I thought both of the announcers went in on Salon a little bit with the other one praising buis to the point where it was almost yeah it was a slight to Salon um but I don’t I wrote In The Rundown and this is funny I wrote In The Rundown something about about Seth Green and then you popped on and said hey we got to talk about Seth Green I go oh did you see what I wrote in the WR down he goes and then Walker goes no I didn’t see it so like you and I and I think a lot of fans out there on the same L wi wavelength and I wrote In The Rundown what did Michael Jordan do to Seth Greenberg I think I said Seth Green a couple of times there Seth Greenberg what did Michael Jordan do to Seth Greenberg that made him so upset because he did not like the Hornets he does not like the Hornets exist as a franchise he does not like tjon Salon it was um it was kind of incredible to watch I was like why did they assign Seth Greenberg to this game Seth Greenberg college basketball analyst I have to imagine they just asking him hey we need bodies can you hop on a summer league game and give us a call despite not having any NBA experience over the last year and I shouldn’t say that there’s very little though it’s not like this guy is doing a lot of his homework he’s a college basketball dude that’s what he does just hit it he’s a college basketball dude and I think some college basketball dudes hop on the broadcast and if they’re confronted with a player that didn’t play college basketball because I think they also did a segment on the what is it not overtime Elite the g-league ignite they did a gag night segment and on those guys too it turned into First Take g-league versus college basketball Z block that was the TV that we watched last night which it’s like wake up wake up folks I mean the I mean yes G League ignite is gone and things are going going to evolve a little bit more towards college basketball but like there’s a generation of folks who don’t worship at the altar of college basketball so Seth Greenberg wake up like you know there are the players can come from other places it’s okay and you don’t have to demonize them on the broadcast and if you’re the other guy who I don’t even know the other guy’s name but he was like openly cheering for Denver at one point I’m like is this guy does he live in Denver is he just a huge nuggets fan I expected them to like cut away to him and like a nuggets Jersey like I don’t understand what was going on the game was like I was like taking crazy pills I’m like I get it’s not the NBA I get it’s like not the regular season I mean it’s summer league but at the same time like why are they actively cheering against the Hornets it’s odd yeah I I forget the playby playay guys name too but I think he called overtime McNugget was the guy name I think yeah it was I believe he called g- League ignite games though and that’s why he was defending g- League ignite and then in doing so when he and Seth were arguing about college compared to the g- league and and this guy was like well it’s it’s going away ignite’s going away so it doesn’t even matter okay it was very very odd but in defending G League ignite he was talking about mates buellis and saying I was shocked when he dropped as far as he did which yeah was a little surprising that’s fair right I was shocked as far to see how far he dropped he’s going to be the steal of the draft and Seth once he got past six that’s when I knew he was going to be a steal I was surprised about that how in the world did he drop past six meanwhile Tan Salon going into the game like what are you doing what’s going on I will say I will say they are fully embracing my philosophy of summer is for feelings I think they’re overrating buis we’ll get to that in a moment when we look at some of these other guys that are playing in summer league but I think buis like is exactly who we thought he was uh no he yeah I know we’ll we’ll talk about it I disagree he’s looked pretty damn good to me but the shot the shot the the uh again I just want to scream from the rooftops and and and again you can hold me to this on our own players as well here in Charlotte but this is Summer League we gotta C we got to we got you know sure we have to get excited well I have a double standard I want to get excited about our players I want to calm down about everybody else I was about to say yeah no you’re right it does not mean I I’m going to pencil him double double can you believe it double double baby uh Jake Stevens four of 11 nine points he is a part of a center battle that features James Banks who did not play very much last night and also I guess Moe the right Moe do you think Stevens has the upper hand in the center battle slash two-way battle with a couple of those contract still left to be given out I don’t know because I mean I don’t know the in they don’t do like injury updates so I don’t know what moi’s status is if he’s just not playing if he’s got um a serious ankle injury if he’s got a minor ankle injury I just don’t know I mean Stevens in this game was four of 11 one of six from three uh nine points eight rebounds he was close to a double double as well uh three blocks I mean yeah I don’t know I I don’t I’m not as obviously I’m not as high on Jake Stevens as I was early on um the play hasn’t uh really come along so if moi’s not heard and they’re super excited about him I think it makes sense Banks is not doing anything for me that uh would make me think I mean there as are all shot blockers I think it’s they are prioritizing Rim protection I think that gives you some signal uh as to you know what they’re going to be looking for from this third center it’s got to be able to protect the rim so I don’t know that’s what Charles Lee said in that interview by the way that they are prioritizing shot blocking so it’s nice to see Stevens do that there was a nice rotation where he defended the rim him after one of the guys got blown by out on the perimeter which was nice but yeah it just feels like a little too unathletic to fear Him defensively is what we’re getting there’s not a lot of wow and if he’s not hitting threes and he did grab some rebounds I think he was fine yesterday but it wasn’t like the first couple of games that we saw at the classic and I’ll say like honestly I I do continue to be a fan of Banks and he only got in for a very short amount of time this was closer to the end of the game but man if if we love the efficient double double from Salon how about six rebounds and two blocks and not even eight minutes from James Banks like he was active when he gets in there so I like what I see he’s the mo the most mobile between the two ghee is also mobile but Banks is out there contesting I like what I see from him so they have a tough decision to make with with that spot if they’re desperate to find a big man then it’s going to be a really hard decision to figure out between those three guys the mobile ones and G and Banks who I like and and Stevens too who brings the shooting aspect to it if again if they’re looking at big guys they have three options I it feels like Banks is on the outside you know with with G playing more minutes when he was there Even Stevens playing what 20 more minutes but yeah the center position like they tough decision to make yeah but did we they don’t even have to make a decision you know there could be a guy that’s playing for another summer league team right now we’ve seen the Hornets do that teams do that all the time so it the the answer might be no to Stevens uh no to Banks G’s going to be hurt for a long time time not to G and they they find something else um or alternatively they make some room on the roster by moving meic and Jackson whether they wave them or or move them to another team and then you know create some space to bring in you know another veteran or another young player that needs a roster Spot somewhere else so I like Nick Smith Jr despite him being pretty inefficient in this game too um I just think on ball the last couple of games I think he’s been a lot better I trust him a lot more there there was some pretty Savvy moves the spin move out of the corner hitting guys out on the perimeter like it just seems like Doug he’s looking for more Shooters outside when he hits the paint oh and I the the shot making it’s going to come and go with somebody on on this kind of volume for sure you want to see the efficiency you might not know who Nick Smith you you might look at the Hornets box score from afar you see that Nick Smith Jr only has all right well let’s see how this guy’s playing I remember him he was a high school Prospect number one oo only a couple of assist ooh four of 14 eight of 22 yeah no thank you I’m good on him but then you get to watch him play and you see the improvement from last year I’m cool with this game from nsj oh totally this is definitely a box score line that’s going to really tell you whether someone watch the game or not because Nick Smith Jr was the only thing they had going really offensively until Matt Morgan hit a few shots in the fourth quarter was really like the only thing they had going offensively in a game where neither team could score so yeah he was going to take a lot of shots and so yes he missed a considerable number of them but he scored 21 points in a game again which they they barely got over the 80 Mark um and you’re right he was looking for others six rebounds to go along with the two assists did have four turnovers but two Steals and a block and that was an impressive block where he fought over a screen recovered back to the guy forced him down to the mid-range and then blocked the shot really I’ve seen some impressive stuff from Nick um growth so I think Nick Smith Jr in this summer league is really instructive to how we’re we’re thinking about tan salon right now because remember what Nick Smith Jr looked like when he first stepped onto the floor for the Hornets he was a lot like Salon except at the guard position he was running around everywhere I mean he was just a ball of energy but he wasn’t controlled energy and now a year later he looks like a completely different player and that speaks to Nick Smith Jr’s work ethic which I think is it the coaching staff has noticed is impeccable he’s he wants to be better he wants to grow I think to Jan is the same way it’s just going to take time just like it took for Nick Smith Jr but he looked despite the inefficient shooting he looked in control of this game which is not something I would have said about him early last season uh last one thought licky black played well also despite seven points thought he was active defensively the lone guy that Seth Greenberg didn’t hate actually gave him some gave him some phrase I think I think the phrase he used was don’t do the things you can’t do well do the things that you can’t do well and he said I truly believe that preach Seth preach well he also but he also called the NBA the most exclusive club in the world it’s like what there have to be more exclusive clubs than the NBA secret clubs that Seth Greenberg has never been and will never be invited to there have to be more exclusive clubs than the NBA just a ridiculous thing to say one of many okay one more segment to go coming up next on the lock on Hornets podcast Seth Seth Green With Envy he was that that’s a good one we’ll continue to talk more about summer league except maybe expand our Horizons a little bit what have the other rookies been doing so far we’ll get to that in just a moment coming up next lockdown Hornets Doug we had a conversation in the classic right Salon wasn’t playing but there were other rookies that were SU up and they were playing pretty well and we had the conversation about just how patient this fan base is willing to be and all the fans they say they’re going to be patient but then you get to year the end of year one and if you don’t see your rookie out there playing significant minutes in year two all of a sudden we get a lot more antsy and and all the patience goes out the window it feels like we’re going to have to have some of that with salon and so I’m interested to see how much the fans will have it a part of their system now the thing that’s going to hurt it or help it it’s going to be the performance of other rookies that you could have traded up for with the rumors surrounding at that point or you just didn’t uh take despite them being available and so we’ve seen some of these guys perform pretty well here Doug one we can go to the guys taken before right Reed Shepard Stefan Castle I still don’t want the Hornets to have traded up to go get those guys maybe Shephard with the way that he’s playing I’m telling you she I think well I’ll say this I think you and I are going to have a segment someday regardless of unless Salon turns into Yannis we are going to have a we were going to have a segment one day that said what if you know should the Hornets have really traded whatever they needed to trade to get up to three because we know that Houston was was somewhat interested in moving that pick maybe they got very uninterested as they looked more into Reed Shepard but should they have done what it took to get to Reed Shepard because he is looking outstanding Shephard and castle and Castle not so much with the efficiency but he’s actually handling the basketball looks pretty good he tried to tell you he tried to tell you he’s point guard you put him off your draft list though so we didn’t even have a chance play for Charlotte yeah that’s right we didn’t even have a chance those guys look I I know you could have traded up for him but that’s still a lot to ask like that at at some point if you get mad about teams not trading up for guys then now you can just be mad at your team for every Star that’s not on your roster so I refuse I refuse to get real mad at the Hornets for that now the other guys like here you could have buus a part of the conversation but he falls to Chicago there are other teams that didn’t want him either but he was a part of the conversation Dalton connect he’s somebody that was highly thought of as a a a Charlotte Hornet coming out of Tennessee so what are some of the stats that you see Doug and you know how how much do you think that we could be in trouble here if other guys start to produce early and the fan base might lose their patience with Salon well look you know I think dalon connect has has played all right I think that buzas has look good like finding different ways to score except for shooting threes like I mean this guy to me is who we thought he was which is a talented scorer is going to give you a few rebounds uh is is not going to help you playmake at all is not going to hit threes at all um and so how valuable does that player project out to be over the lifetime of his career I have questions there which is why I always had questions about buis so I’m not I’m not totally worried about that um in terms of like the the patience conversation I I honestly don’t think it matters if the fan base is impatient or patient and the reason I say that is because they’ve everything that I’ve heard from Peterson and everything that I’ve heard from Charles Lee is it’s all based around hard work and it’s about earning your spot and I I think these are strong willed individuals I don’t think that the ownership group has any incentive to like oh the rookies got to play we got to show case the rookie you’ve got lamelo ball you’ve got Brandon Miller you’ve got marketable pieces this is not a franchise that needs to like throw the top six pick out there so that people have something to come and watch for there’s plenty to watch on this team and if they win all of this gets taken care of then fans will understand I think most of them will understand okay this guy was a project he needed seasoning you know they’re going to get some uh g-league highlights I mean salon’s going to love G League he’s going to dominate g-league and people are going to get those highlights and and it’s going to be okay as long as the Hornets are moving in the right direction now the moment that things start to go sour if they go sour then I think the Hornets will then have a tough decision to make you know do we do we move this guy up and get him some time later in the season but that’s you know that’s a conversation for another day but all that’s to say I don’t think that it matters if the Hornets fans are impatient or not because this is a we’ve got a strong wheed front office and a strong willed coach who has Championship pedigree and I think you know most fans are going to trust in that at least in the in the short term well and and I hope especially if you compare him to a Dalton connect Who falls so late in the draft the the guys just don’t love the older players and I get it you know because you’re talking about some real history that says the older you are the odds are in our favor that you’re not going to work out as much as some of these younger guys who once they get to their second contract they’re 22 where the older guys like d connect is 22 23 right now so it makes sense but dlan connect is going to have a better rookie season thanjan Salon that’s gonna happen we to I yeah I don’t know if we had this specific conversation but I would have bet all my money that Dalton connect would have a better rookie season barring Health than salon so we can’t look after year one see Dalton go for 13 points per game on 36% three-point shooting and say okay well the Lakers won that pick Hornet sucked by picking Salon because salon’s not going to have any numbers close to that so it’s all going to have to be about the year two or year three gains that you get from selecting salon number six and what’s great is he is the youngest player in the draft so at that point if he wins out if he is the right pick and it takes three years he’s 21 yeah so you still have a long time to go that’s how I’m gonna have to view it and I hope others view it the same way sure but I mean I think you know by this time next season when we see him again in summer league we’re we’re going to have a better idea of where that trajectory is because it didn’t take Giannis very long to to start to turn heads right and but he had and he had a different opportunity there um in Milwaukee and so you know that’s that’s I guess the other side of the argument is you’ve got to you got to put him in the fire at some point to see what you have does that mean that he has you know a significant bench roll in game one of the regular season I don’t think so I do think you know again unless they are you know a lock for the playin and you just want to make sure that you hold on to that postseason positioning or God forbid that you know they’re a a six seed or something and they’re a lock for a playoff spot then and you don’t want to you don’t want to test it then but you know if you are that Fringe playin team you you’ve got to put them in the fire at some point and say all right what do we have here the honest comparisons man do we just need to back off of them right now because we’re summer time we’re saying his name a lot and I’m looking at giannis’s Stats and you’re right by year two he was averaging 13 points on close to 50% shooting and by year three he was third in MIP of course he wins MIP his fourth year may maybe we just don’t say his name as much I’m I’m not I’m sorry you can sign up for that I’m not signing up for that at all particularly in July you are not gonna get me to sign that piece of paper in
