What’s the context of this image?

I was curious just what the context of it was and what the text means. I know Wes and Earl Monroe but not a lot about this era

  1. Looks like it dates from sometime between 1969-1971 and was an ad put out by the Bullets organization (which was still in Baltimore at the time) to wish the Orioles well in their playoff run – the Orioles made the World Series in all three years, defeating the Reds in 1970. I think that’s Gus Johnson and Jack Marin on the left, and Kevin Loughery on the other side of Monroe and Unseld.

  2. Given the era, its was likely a reference to the Baltimore Orioles. The O’s lost the 1979 World Series, and the Bullets had moved to DC from Baltimore in 1973. Baltimore also became the de facto baseball team for DC after the second incarnation of the Washington Senators moved to Texas and became the Rangers.

  3. Birds meaning dicks. They asked the team who likes dicks and they all put their hands up and said “we suck.”

  4. It is the then Baltimore Bullets supporting the Orioles.

24 is Jack Marin, #22 is Kevin Loughery #41 is Wes Unseld, #25 is Gus Johnson and #10 is Earl Monroe (the last 3 are in the HOF BTW)

Wes joined the Team in 68-69 and Monroe was traded 3 games into the 70-71 Season (Johnson, Marin and Loughery were there throughout). So this was between 68-71.

The Orioles went to the World Series in 69 (L) and 70 (W) 71(L).

Because Monroe was clearly gone by the MLB playoffs of 71, this picture/ad was likely put together for the Orioles’ 69 or 70 MLB playoff run. Just guessing: Since they lost in 69, my **guess** would be that “*We Believe in You*” message fits better for the 70 season.
