SF Giants Move Soler, Cobb—Clearing Paths for Luciano, Birdsong—Acquire Mark Canha at Trade Deadline

The San Francisco Giants traded Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson in a salary dump. They sold from an area of surplus, trading Alex Cobb to the Guardians for a compelling 19-year-old LHP. And they acquired Mark Canha, shoring up a small but meaningful need for a player to pair with LaMonte Wade Jr. at 1B in Wilmer Flores’ absence to to be a potentially dangerous bat off the bench.

  1. 5:48 I’m not a big Soler guy either but we had to do something and he was the best option available. Younger. Could get some time with him. But he’s been hitting 270 over the last 30 games and even hotter at 478 in the past 7. We should have got more in return for him. I get the big money saved but we didn’t make a move that pushed us to contending for a WC spot. If you’re not going to add for that push, then we should have sold more.

And we should have packaged up Soler w/ Cobb to get a bigger return.

but if the move is to just dump a contract to give time to another guy because he’s not panning out, then that’s a give up move. So go bigger. Heck Soler and Snell together would bring in a monster deal because they’ve both been playing hot and every contending team could use a power arm and power bat.

  2. not when he made the right ones. I want to see more of Hayden Birdsong and Marco Luciano and in terms of Mark Cana. He clearly feels the spot of Wilmer Florez who I would not be surprised if he’s placed on the 60 day IL and ends his season with the knee issue .

  3. We’re acouple out the wildcard and we added by subtracting. Trade soler and Cobb and keep birdsong in the rotation and keep Luciano in the bigs. We’ll replace the power in the middle of the lineup with a player that will be waived this week.

  4. Guys Soler was not it. We need to drop the old guys that are over paid and not preforming. Conforto or Yaz would be cool to trade for something but nobody wants them. This is what the market was offering. What did everyone expect to pick a Vlad jr and lose nothing but Luke Jackson and some other average bats? 😂
