I like Deslauriers, and it seems like his teammates really like him too. I think people underestimate what having a guy like him correctly slotted for about 5-10 minutes of a game can do. It’s kind of exactly what you’d want for a fourth liner. Hard, grinding shifts where he finishes every check possible definitely make the opposing team more reluctant/uncomfortable holding on to the puck. He makes people dump pucks, or chuck them around like grenades. Also, I feel like that quote was more of a joke by Briere than a statement of purpose. I know everyone on the internet wants 12 18 year old Bedard’s out there, but you definitely don’t develop players on 7 minutes a night. The fourth line doesn’t have to be future all stars.
Would love to know what Briere actually means by this and what he actually thinks Deslauriers is contributing.
Drysdale got wrecked and injured on Deslauriers’ watch, so it’s not like players are afraid of retribution from him in the event that they hit one of our young stars.
