Non-participants: TE Jaheim Bell, LB/S Marte Mapu, S Jabrill Peppers

Red non-contact jersey: CB Shaun Wade, WR DeMario Douglas

After an eventful day of Monday, Matthew Judon was not present at Patriots practice on Tuesday as he continues his ongoing contract dispute.

DeMario Douglas has not participated in team drills through the summer, but that changed on Tuesday as he wore a red non-contact jersey and returned to team work. Jaheim Bell and Jabrill Peppers did not participate, but were seen, after spending time with the trainers on Monday. Marte Mapu also remained a non-participant.

Takeaways

Brissett’s unit: The veteran quarterback entered Tuesday’s session coming off a pair of steady practices, but Brissett struggled with accuracy at times. That included a pass behind Hunter Henry allowing Joshuah Bledsoe to break it up and two misses intended for Jalen Reagor. Brissett did, however, have the best ball of the day hitting Henry with a perfect pass on an over route for a score.

As for the Brissett-led offense, it was not as clean as a performance as Monday’s practice. Beyond having to run another team lap for a substitution error, the run game struggled and receivers often wore coverage. In a positive note, the starting offensive line mainly held up again — helping lead to a nice completion to K.J. Osborn on a crosser.

Maye’s day: After a down two days for the rookie, Drake Maye rebounded nicely to start Tuesday’s session: he was sharp in 1-on-1s — specifically when throwing outside the numbers. When the work transitioned to team drills, Maye then completed his first five throws while operating mainly in the short area of the field; one big play came on a play-action bootleg to Mitchell Wilcox.

Things weren't as smooth during his final three drives of 11-on-11 work (his busiest practice so far). The backup offensive line he was operating with was not as productive, and the ball often found the ground. Maye had his worst miss of the day go toward K.J. Osborn, saw a ball go through Wilcox’s hands, and had a pair of incompletions to Javon Baker — one due to quick pressure, and one broken up by Marco Wilson.

He did respond with a nice crosser to Ja’Lynn Polk and a short attempt to Jacob Warren, while a jump ball to Baker hit the turf. Things continue to seem to be moving fast out there for the rookie in his first two padded practices, opening the gap between him and Brissett. No need to hit the panic button at this point, however — as one of his teammates echoed.

“Whenever he does get more opportunities, he’s going to show you guys how great he really is and why he went where he went,” Jalen Reagor said after practice.

White’s presence: The second-year defensive lineman continued his strong offseason on Tuesday. Beyond a pair of strong reps in 1-on-1s, White was causing havoc during team periods. In addition to blowing up a run play, he also had a quick win over Layden Robinson to cause immediate pressure and an incompletion.

Rookie wideouts: Another good day for rookie wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. Polk continues to be extremely consistent and did his best work in team drills in the red area. He hauled in a jump ball from Brissett over Marco Wilson and later connected with Joe Milton on a strong out route for another score. Polk also tallied a pair of wins in 1-on-1s against Marcus Jones and Marcellas Dial.

As for Baker, there was no highlight play for the receiver today but he continued to get open throughout the day. That included beating Isaiah Bolden downfield in a 1-on-1 even though the ball was slightly underthrown resulting in an incompletion.

Other notes:

  • In the third QB battle, Bailey Zappe took the lone 7-on-7 reps while Joe Milton took both 11-on-11 series. Milton had two touchdown passes in a row to Polk and JuJu Smith-Schuster — both receivers running strong routes.
  • Speaking of Smith-Schuster, the veteran spent time with a trainer in the athletic training tent as he got banged up running off to the side. He claimed he was fine after practice.
  • A muffed handoff to Kevin Harris resulted in a fumble recovered by Marco Wilson.
  • Nick Leverett returned as the top center in David Andrews’ continued absence. Atonio Mafi worked behind him and again had a few shaky snaps.
  • Another noticeable day along the edge for Oshane Ximines. Continuing to get a solid run without Matthew Judon, Ximines tallied a pressure and run stuff.
  • Missing Christian Barmore and Jabrill Peppers from the defense, Trysten Hill and Jaylinn Hawkins saw their playing time spike on Tuesday.
  • Besides getting beat on the Hunter Henry score, Joshuah Bledsoe also had two pass breakups — one versus Austin Hooper and the other on a pass behind Henry.
  • Nate Ebner was once again on scene to watch, and at points help with, practice.
  • New England ended practice by running sprints on the field instead of heading to using the traditional hill.
  • One field goal each for Chad Ryland and Joey Slye to end practice as they rushed the whole field goal unit on the field. Both connected from 47 yards out.
  • Bryce Baringer had a live punting session where he kicked from around the 50-yard line. Out of his seven attempts, just two were touchbacks.

New England will be off on Wednesday following three straight sessions. They will then return to the practice fields on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
