[Hayes] Twins’ failed trade deadline has roots in ownership’s decision to slash payroll

  1. The key trade bits – we were deep in conversations over Kikuchi until Astros blew us out the water

We had wanted Fedde and Flaherty but the asking prices started with one of our top 3 prospects – a non starter

One possibility was to trade for Cortes if the Yankees got Flaherty which ultimately didnt happen as Flaherty went to LA

  2. The title of the article is a bit misleading at best. It’s jumping on the band wagon that the payroll cuts are the reason they didn’t make a splashy trade for a starter or relief pitcher, but in reality the Market is what drove them to the decisions they made.

It sounds like they reached out to both Detroit and Chicago for their available “fire sale” pieces. And both wanted one (OR MORE) of the following 3 parts back – Lee, Jenkins or Rodriguez. Rightly so that’s a non starter. If I’m the GM I laugh and hang up the phone at that point. That would be like the Vikings trading Addison, JJ McCarthy or Dallas Turner to the Packers, Lions or Bears. You just don’t do it.

The Yankees were scared off by Flaherty’s medicals – but the Dodgers weren’t. That basically took another possible target off the market, since the Yankees would have flipped Cortes at that point.

The Astros and Twins were both in on Kikuchi – but basically Houston gave up 3 major league ready players for him (My comps on the Twins would have been Martin / Mathews and our #11 prospect.) That’s a shit ton of an overpay for a 4th starter.

San Fran was buying but gave up Alex Cobb for a song – btw Cobb hasn’t pitched a single inning this season. Enjoy that buyer’s remorse Cleveland. We already have Paddock who can’t figure out endurance and a few others who can’t stay off the IL. Thanks but no thanks San Francisco.

Bottom line – EVEN WITH the payroll cuts – the Twins have never – EVER – not under Ryan, Flavine, or even back to the McPhail days traded young talent / top 10 prospects for players that were short term rentals.

The deadline trades they made 3 years ago for Mahle and Lopez both had (unfortunately) a year of team control left at least. And we probably overpaid for both – in fact we definitely overpaid for both.

The ONLY time I can think of when we traded at the deadline for a short term rental was 87 – when we got Joe Nekro at the regular trade deadline and Don Baylor at the waiver deadline. And we didn’t give up a ton of prospects for either.

  3. Actually LMFAO at the White Sox and Tigers trying to get Jenkins/Lee/Emma for Fedde or Flaherty holy shit

  4. I feel like the people responding to this reporting with “prospects are a dime a dozen you need to pay what it takes to upgrade the roster” will feel differently when Tigers legend Walker Jenkins hits his 40th homer in Target Field as Cory comments that the Twins actually had Walker in the minors and he was playing great but then they decided to trade him for a playoff push in 2024

  5. Well cone on now, Pohlad’s have to put good on their table and Bill needs to make movies. Baseball doesn’t matter to them. /s ( sorta)

  6. Lmao it’s always the same. “We were trying but someone else blew our offer away.”

    This team is a joke
