The Cincinnati Reds Trade Deadline puts More Pressure on the Upcoming Offseason

The Cincinnati Reds trade deadline movements included sending Frankie Montas and Lucas Sims away and acquiring Ty France, Joey Wiemer, and Jakob Junis. The Reds trade deadline seems very meh.

Because of the trade deadline the Reds had, the Front Office has challenged itself for the offseason and their focus should be clear on how to make the Reds better.

And Santiago Espinal will miss the month of July.

  1. Disappointment. This offseason better be big. Krall needs to go all in while we have this core. Not just one year in maybe 2027 when they all about to hit free agency. Now is the time. Smh

  2. We need to add a Bonafide .800 OPS right fielder, and a Bonafide .800 OPS centerfielder. Then we wheel into next year with CES at 1b, Matt McLain at 2b, Elly at SS, Marte at 3b, Steer in LF, new CF and new RF. Come on, TJ Friedl will be in his age 29 season. He can't stay healthy. I like him as a 4th Outfielder, but we can't count on him to stay healthy. He's also put on weight. He's not a great defender as it is. We need to turn the page on thinking TJ Friedl is a major piece. I like him. I really do. But, if the goal is to be a playoff team, we need to be more honest about what we have. I think we can count on McClain and Elly. The odds that both Marte and CES flame out is small..imo. I think both have high floors. I see a path to 90 wins next year, but we need to come off some coin and go get a new CF and new RF.

  3. I think Reds are gonna stay put for the most part, going into 2025 bc mgmt/ownership needs to feel confident that majority of roster is capable of being competitive
    Hope am wrong
2025 trade deadline is going to be more active than off-season based on my theory

  4. Horrible absolutely horrible trade deadline as it allways has been for many years they had more pieces they could have traded pure laziness on the front office as allways management needs to change

  5. Man I have egg all over my face this year… India has been a major disappointment, and completely went to bat for them not trading him… obviously nothing we can do about all the injuries… Trading Frankie just let's us all know they gave up.. I quit watching all sports and it's been glorious but ive stayed true to Reds baseball and I'm about done with that..

  6. Good deadline trade Not great But this team was not ready to Playoffs with only 1 or 2 players added. They did not trade anybody that was going to change the outcome of this year And they've added some people that could help A little this year And possibly a lot next year… High upside 1st 1st baseman With little downside cost Good relief pitcher And 2 excellent And 2 excellent prospects that are ready to either make it or not In the majors.1Being a right handed power bat outfielder And the other being a 4 position infield player And they got these players for little or nothing.

  7. Needed an impact bat to pump up this lineup….did not do that. France could be a valuable piece, but not the pop we need. Candy is just not getting it done.

  8. Sim’s command issues were becoming more and more prominent. Just can’t have a guy come in with the game on the line and throw balls constantly. He never seemed to figure it out. With Sims and Diaz…and now Cruz, you have 3 backend relievers who can’t throw strikes.

  9. The Reds need to go 34-21 the rest of the way to get to 86 wins, and 86 wins might not even make the playoffs. Buying now would have been foolish, just as foolish to expect the Reds to play like the Phillies the rest of the way.

As for selling, I don't find it hard to imagine that there wasn't a whole lot of interest in our bullpen spare parts like Farmer and Wilson, or a great thirst for our declining late inning guys like Cruz and Diaz. India could have generated some interest but considering no top 100 prospects were moved at this trade deadline (according to Baseball America) it doesn't sound like teams wanted to pay a price we would have wanted India traded for.

I do agree that something needs to happen in the offseason. They can't just say they are getting Mclain back and be ready to rock. A legitimate hitting OF needs to be brought in, and a legitimate middle of the order bat needs to be brought in. That can be one player, but it doesn't have to be.

Personally, i'd go big and offer Vlad Guerrero Jr a 6 year, $240 million deal to be that middle of the order bat, even at the expense of signing an outfielder. Vlad Jr hitting 3rd after EDLC would be a game changer. Outside of Hunter Greene, and Jeimer for the next two years, we aren't paying ANYBODY, the Reds could take on that contract and still might be under a $100 million payroll next year. Try to offload Jeimer's money and there is even more to play with.

Then for the OF, keep trying the shuffle of Steer/Fraley/Frield/Benson/Wiemer/Hinds/Dunn/Hurtubise/FA and see if somebody has a career year and then if you're in it, make a move at next year's trade deadline.
