Red Wings observations at World Junior Showcase: Max Plante impressing early

  1. It’s possible he makes the U20 team depending how his season goes.

    Perreault – Hagens – Leonard
    Eiserman – Moore – Musty
    Connelly – Stiga – Plante
    Ziemer – Nelson – Terrance
    Humphries, Bednarik

Seems reasonable right now. I don’t think I’m forgetting anyone big.

  2. This is from the Athletic.

Basically there’s 4 Wings prospects at the 4 nation world junior showcase. Augustine, Plante, newly acquired Finish Jesse Kiiskinen (via Gibson trade) and John Whipple. There are significantly more players in the showcase than there will be in the world juniors.

Augustine is projected to start and hasn’t had to face a lot of pucks as the US team is more focused on isolating a strong back up for him

Plante has 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games while playing P1 for USA, and currently sits tied for 3rd overall in scoring. Lalonde is impressed with Plante’s high hockey IQ.

Kiiskinen is the Finish Captain during the showcase and has 1 assist in 2 games. He is a hard working player that can be deployed to any situation but lacks size and strength. Wings’ Finish scout talked to him frequently before the draft but he was picked by Nashville ahead of Detroit. Wings seem to be familiar with his game.

Whipple is unlikely to make the world juniors as a LD but Lalonde has been impressed with him being “heavier and harder” than expected.
