– No more guaranteed money on his contract on his deal that runs through 2026
– Originally, Williams signed a 6-year, $138 MM deal
– Holding out for a new deal and hasn’t reported to training camp
– The obvious path to resolving this issue: Give him a Christian McCaffrey like contract
– Whereas the 49ers have the leverage with Aiyuk, they don’t have leverage with Williams. This is already a questionable offensive line. WIthout Williams, it becomes a highly problematic unit and we’ve seen that during training camp with Jaylon Moore struggling and in the past when Williams has missed time.
– Is there risk? No doubt about it: Williams is still arguably the best LT in the game, but he is 36-years-old
– Why are we here? Just like the WR market has exploded. The OT market has exploded, with the likes of Penei Sewell and Tristin Wirfs landing monster contract extensions

That is not going to fly for Trent Williams

Adam Schefter on the Trent Williams situation:
“You know, the tricky part about this one is you’re talking about a guy that’s as dominant as any offensive tackle in all football,” Schefter said. “He’s been great. He’s been unbelievable. He’s so good. Future Hall of Famer. He’s also 36 years old and he’s got, I believe, [three] years left on his contract.

“And so these offensive linemen, their value is huge, immense work, and the Niners know it. But they’re also in a situation where, again, I think that they’ve gone and paid Williams a couple of different times, and he’s 36.

“So you have to balance how do you do that? How do you figure out a way to keep him happy and keep your salary cap situation intact at a time when you know the Brock Purdy extension is coming down the pike after the season? You got Brandon Aiyuk, who wants his money. You’re paying these other guys. So it’s a challenging situation that they have not yet figured [out].”

Will Trent Williams get a new contract and should he?

Kyle Shanahan on the matter:
“It was something I knew could be a possibility,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I was hoping that he would be here but I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident it’ll all work out in the long run. And he’ll be here and we’ll get on the same page with everything.”

John Lynch on Trent:
“I think we’ve got a lot of talented players and we’ve rewarded a lot,” general manager John Lynch said. “It does become more challenging in time when you’ve rewarded so many players. That’s also why this is a very good team that has such high expectations.”
