Blackhawks taking risk by progressing out of tanking stage without second elite forward prospect

  1. It’s hard enough to find a single truly elite prospect, much less a second.

Beyond that, it’s not worth potentially stunting Bedard’s growth to try and gamble at the lottery again.

  2. Why do people realize we still have Hall. The guy can put up an easy 20-30 a year when hevplays a full season. Just bad luck last year.

  3. Although our roster is improved from last year (partly because of FA & partly because of health) we are still going to be a bottom of the league team. We will still have a top 10 pick (at the very least).

Surrounding Bedard and Nazar with some talent to help them progress individually won’t stunt our growth.

I understand the sentiment behind the worrying, but I really don’t think that we are “out of the tanking stage” or progressing too quickly.

  4. I’m not expecting us to be contenders this year but is it really that controversial to not want to tank 3 years in a row

  5. To be honest, even with all of our improvements, I still think we are bottom-10 this season. I haven’t read much on next year’s draft, so I don’t know how deep it is or isn’t. Other bottom teams around us like Anaheim, Montréal, and Utah should in theory improve too. If we were to improve by 25 points this season, we would still be near the bottom going by last season’s standings.

Basically, I agree with the need for another elite forward but I also think another season of being at the bottom would be bad for morale and development. I also think we will still be a lottery team, just not the greatest odds.

  6. It’s interesting to look at parallels to 2005, 06…07. I keep looking at veteran moves and ask myself is that the Sharp signing? Did we just draft our next two way grinder captain? Offensive juggernaut? We need to be patient. We have to understand this isn’t like the last rebuild.

  7. It’s not “tank, tank”, more like not spending wildly. Still early there Ben.

  8. Still have Bedard, a ton of draft picks and young talent, plus sometimes a non top five pick becomes a star or trade for someone established. Still sitting pretty.

  9. Different sport but look how tanking to acquire more talent worked out for the 76ers, if you can be a better team always be a better team. This mentality that every rebuild has to involve 3-5 years of top level picks to be a success is crazy

  10. If you constantly tank you risk developing a losing culture. Ask Ottawa, early 2010s oilers, or Buffalo how hard that is to get out of.

You have to eventually build up. The organization has to trust their scouting, player development, and coaching to bring players along.

  11. Such an asinine take. What are they supposed to do? It’s like people forget that unless you’ve got the first pick, you’re usually waiting a few years for your prospects to hit the NHL. So does he want them to continue tanking and then when Bedard is 10 years in, hopefully they’re ready to compete???

  12. Hawks fans are still too spoiled from drafting Kane and Toews and think the only way to win is two slam dunk top 3 picks.
