Carey replaced Saku as my all time favourite hab, but I honestly don’t know if either of them hit the status of the others up there.
Because why create a link or video post when we can post a random photo of Dryden and link it in the comments?
I get super downvoted every time I say this but I don’t see it. Hall of fame was always a lock, but with the history of the team no one can really justify retiring the number of a guy who didn’t bring the cup.
Amazing player. One of my all time favorites. Not on board with jersey retirement.
Winningest Habs goalie, will be a first ballot hall of famer. Absolute lock for the number to be retired.
I get both sides of this topic, it’s a touch decision. He definitely deserves it but if the bar is set too low we’re going to have to start using fractions soon.
Semi-related but I always thought legends’ numbers should be in the rafters but none of them should actually be retired. Some numbers like 4, 9 and 10 should be reserved for special players tho. Like in soccer when receiving the 10 is special and an honor or in basketball when Lebron took 23.
Ab-so-toot-ly.
He’s in my Top 5 all-time goalies list. Right up there with Hasek, Brodeur, and Roy. The hard choice for me is who I would pick as #5 to round out the list, but Dryden would be a good choice.
No numbers should be retired, in the rafters yes but still available to wear.
It has to. Every generation has a banner of a player that they can look up and say “Wow what a player”. Carey is that guy for this generation and must be rewarded with the biggest honor.
Face of the team for ~16 years. He deserves to be up there.
No Cup = no retired number 🙂
Hall of very good, but by no means deserves to be up there among those giants.
I think I’m down with leaving the whole number retirement thing to the de facto ‘founding fathers’ of this franchise—a monument to the icons who made the Habs the greatest franchise in hockey.
Should we be so lucky as to have another player who leads us to several Cups again in the future, make an exception, by all means. I just don’t think being your team’s best player for a decade should warrant that kind of reverence.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some downvotes to count…
My neighbor growing up!!
He’ll be up there the year after the contracts done
Shouldn’t even be a question. He took a garbage team into the top of the standings and into the playoffs every year.
No one in the rafters even has less than 2 cup wins with the Habs. It sucks for Price he played in the era he did, but when guys like Vézina and Toe Blake, Lemaire (8 cups), Shutt (5 cups) and Carbonneau (3 Selke, 2 cups) aren’t even in the rafters, I don’t think Price deserves it to be there.
To everyone saying “but he didn’t win a Stanley Cup,” just realize that if he had just 3 more victories in his career, he would have a Stanley Cup in his name. And he got that close on one leg. And who knows what could have been in 2014 if he hadn’t been Kreidered.
To me the main question is when … several guys had to wait until they were 80-90 years old to see their name/numbers go up.
It certainly won’t happen in the immediate term, but I don’t think they’d push it so long as to have a near-century old Carey when/if it happens either.
15-20 years? Enough time that we will probably still not have seen anything like him in our crease and will have all the more appreciation for what he managed to do for the organization, on top of his obvious statistical prowess.
If someone who is considered a legend which also has their number retired co-signs you, you should have your jersey retired.
There are many examples of players with Jersey number retirements and no cups to their name. Maybe not in Montreal but don’t forget there were half as many teams in the glory days of Montreal’s dynasties. Price had shitty luck with terrible teams and he brought them only as far as he could carry them. The impact he had on the franchise was enough to convince me. Plus he had a ton of individual awards including international stage. Cup or no cup there should never be another 31.
No question whatsoever, I can’t wait to see Carey’s jersey retired
Honestly he carried the entire fan base’s mental state through the Bergevin era and made us ignore how bad management was and actually believe they could make a run any given season.
That’s worthy of retirement imo. Look at Edmonton and Toronto to see what no goaltending does to an entire fan base’s collective psyche.
I believe it too. It should be up there with or without a cup. Let’s be real. My hope is that Price wins a cup with us eventually, even if it’s not as a player!
