After spending multiple days in Chicago for a joint practice and the second preseason game of the year against the Chicago Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals left with various injuries, sloppy play, and sloppy weather.

After returning to Cincinnati, Dave Lapham joined Dave Berk to discuss the events of the past few days with a focus on the Bengals’ 27-3 loss against the Bears, where they played almost all backups against the Bears front-line players.

Who stepped forward with noteworthy performances as the days count down until the Bengals must reduce their roster to the NFL mandatory 53?

All that and more in the latest Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics.

  1. The Bengals are not going backwards. They have dealt with some injuries this preseason, but most of them are minor injuries and most of them will be back soon. The problem is,you have a new offensive coordinator in Dan Pitcher, but your best player on offense is not on the field and loosing valuable reps within the offense. The entire offense revolves around Jamarr Chase, then everything else runs off of that passing attack. The Bengals have 3 weeks till the start of the season and they have no more road trips till week 2 in Kansas City. It’s pivotal that we get Jamarr Chase signed as soon as possible,so we can install the offensive scheme and get him practicing. The defense will be just fine,I trust Lou Anarumo and I like what I see from the young guys up front on the D line. The signing of Geno Stone and bringing Vonn Bell back will help out in that secondary. I also expect CTB to have a great season and Turner and Dax Hill have played well in the preseason. We just need the offense to evolve over these next 3 weeks, and that starts with Jamarr Chase getting back on the field. You can’t afford a slow start on offense with a new offensive coordinator trying to find his footing in this offense.

  2. It’s very concerning the lack of ability to run the offense without the starters on the field. The offense hasn’t really played a good defense in the preseason, yet they struggle for any consistency moving the ball. We have a new offensive coordinator in Dan Pitcher filling big shoes with the departure of Brian Callahan. Let’s make it a little easier on the guy and get his best offensive player on the team back on the field. We have 3 weeks to get things fixed on offense,do not drop the ball here! Get Jamarr Chase signed to a contract extension so this offense can prepare for week 1. The number 1 seed for playoff positioning could very well hang in the balance week 2 versus the Kansas City Chiefs,so be ready!
