Sunday will be the last-ever game in the Bay Bridge Series. And for the San Francisco Giants’ manager who spent 11 seasons managing the Oakland Athletics, the last days of a Bay Area rivalry mark the final times Melvin will enter the Coliseum’s old hallways for a day of work.

Melvin was happy to have a rare Friday day off to prepare himself for the emotions.
“That last day will be pretty hard,” Melvin said.

In case you haven’t heard, the A’s will play at Sutter Health Park outside Sacramento next season en route to Las Vegas, their eventual destination by sometime at the end of the decade. Or, at least, that’s the organization’s stated plan.

Matt Chapman, a former Oakland and current San Francisco third baseman, relates to the anger. He has been outspoken about his frustrations when ownership didn’t spend to strengthen the 2018, 2019 and 2020 A’s playoff teams on which he and Canha played, only to watch ownership let leader Marcus Semien walk. His experience playing for the Toronto Blue Jays and Giants gave Chapman perspective on how cheaply Fisher operated in comparison, he said.

“It was frustrating,” Chapman said. “You feel bad for the players, coaches and the fans. Everybody. The fans paid money to come see us, the guys that work hard. That team was dedicated to winning and we didn’t feel like the owner cared.

“I feel really bad for (the fans). They have a great fan base and people that care and they’ve had their hearts ripped out a million times. It’s hard.”

Chapman will miss the Bay Bridge series and the Coliseum for what they were. As for the A’s move to Vegas? He isn’t convinced.

“Who knows what’s going to happen,” Chapman said. “They’ve been trying to do that for so long, but I don’t know what the issue is. It’s one of those things you don’t hold your breath on because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
