[Cassavell] The Padres just optioned Matt Waldron to Triple-A El Paso. Waldron was a rock in their rotation for three-quarters of the season, but he’d clearly hit a wall deep into his rookie season. He allowed 22 runs in his last three starts. Unclear what the plan is for Waldron from here.

  1. It really felt like an auto L his last few outings, hopefully he figures something out.

  2. Its about time. He was a bright spot when things seemed dicey and he balled out. But my man needs a rest.

  3. I was hoping to see him pitch when I am at Petco this weekend because knuckleball, but prob for the best. He’ll be back.

  4. Right decision, I don’t think this is the final we see from him, maybe it will be for this year. I just wanna say thanks for the innings he did give us! He gave us 9 quality starts and struck out 10 braves once.

  5. It sucks. It was cool to see a knuckler out there. But they need consistency out there down the stretch. These games are too important.

  6. I was shit on in another Padres post last night saying he needs to get pulled, yet here we are. Bummer for sure, he’s going to be back just needs to get over whatever it is that’s hurting him.

  7. Giving 130 great innings when our rotation fell apart with Darvish and Musgrove going down and the other 5/6’s not having it is provided a disproportionate contribution vs his statistical output.

One thing I’d definitely like to see is his FB velocity climb a bit because scouting reports had him up to 95 a few years ago. Slider would play better with separation against the knuckler.

  8. Guys, I think people are jumping to conclusions in saying he can’t come back this season. I certainly would want Wally back is he’s able to recoup his rhythm. He pushed so hard and helped us out a ton. He’s a known dude. Let him rest but don’t close the door on him yet.

  9. I wish he started with the knuckle yesterday!! It felt so weird seeing him throw what didnt work for him before

  10. Not sure why you wouldn’t do a phantom IL then put him in the pen when rosters expand in 9 days
