Devils and Canadiens were the other top candidates to receive Askarov but ultimately lose the bidding war

  1. Askarov likely would have been a great piece for us, but ultimately the Sharks gave up pretty significant value. Swing and a miss, but that’s the market. We’ll need to continue to look for a longer term solution.

  2. Would have been cool, but not too bummed. At least we’ll be good in net for two more years, hopefully.

  3. If Fitz lost the bid he wasn’t offering much, because the pieces SJ gave up werent really that much for what Askarov has the potential to be.

  4. Would he have been a great option for our future? Yep. But also with his temper tantrum to report to the AHL it could have totally blown up in our faces if he didn’t live up to the hype and needed some more seasoning. He’s only played 3 NHL games and we’re all too familiar with great goalie prospects shitting the bed over here.

Cost would have been too high to go in on a “maybe.”

  5. Timing just wasn’t right. That simple. Sure it would’ve been nice to land Askarov. Good chance if we were offering a 2026 first and a prospect like Casey that may not have been appealing to Nashville as they’re in win now mode with signing Stamkos and Marchessault. However our pipeline isn’t too shabby with Daws, Poulter, Brennan and Yegorov. Not to mention a solid tandem for the next two years with Markstrom and Allen. Let’s see if another established goalie presents themselves by then whether in a trade or FA. There’s always the possibility Askarov turns into a pumpkin as well.

  6. The fact that they got a first from basically the worst team in the league is huge. They’re basically guaranteed a top 10 pick unless Askarov can put the team on his back and carry them.

I would have loved to see him come to NJ. He could have made a nice tandem with Markstrom for a year or two than took over.

But hopefully Markstrom stays healthy and gives us a few good years to find our next Marty

  7. No, this is awful news, I don’t want to hear the whining from folks here if Markstron doesn’t pan out. We could’ve just kept that info to never be spoken out loud.

  8. Trotz strikes again… dude knows talent can’t blame him ig 🤷‍♂️ shame Trotz couldn’t get that Saros deal done quicker, I feel like had that gotten done then we would’ve just paid what we paid for Markstrom for Askarov. But that’s negotiation for ya!

  9. I kind of hate knowing we were in the mix but such is life. It might have come down to we didn’t have a ‘25 1st to give them. I know Markstrom/Allen aren’t long term solutions but it’s not a bad position to be in now, I think this team is at the point where it is in win now mode. Plus this just saves the pieces Fitzgerald might (hopefully) need to trade to strengthen the team at the trade deadline.

  10. Me 16 months ago : “Oh hockey gods, I bet Askarov could outright unseat the Vanecek Blackwood duo.”

    (Monkey paw very slowly curls)

  11. Yeah I’m pretty happy with rolling markstrom/Allen for a year or two and seeing what daws is. Without rushing him like every other prospect over the last 5 years..

I feel like there was a lot of the anti Holtz campaigners clamoring for askarov as a pseudo Mulligan on the Holtz draft because we “should have drafted askarov” anyway..

Is what it is. He’s still an unproven commodity and let’s not forget how good Spencer knight was meant to be and now what?

Pro sports is hard. And our team needs some veterenship in crucial roles. I think goaltending is one of them.

The mental fortitude needed to be good is staggering and there are very few young kids with it for indefinite periods of time. Especially with expectations and disappointment of last season looming.

Too much turn over also fucks your chemistry.

Look at last year vs the year before..

Too much change and the team could never gel.
