Devils Player Grid | Most overrated Devil of ALL TIME

This should be a good one. Most upvoted comment wins and if you see a certain netminder’s name in the comments, stomp out the commenter for me.

Sarge won the most underrated vote by quite a large margin.

  1. Kovalchuk for no reason other than I’m still mad at him

EDIT: Honestly the “Merrill and a 3rd” meme should cement Jon Merrill as literally the most overrated since y’all thought we can get anyone in the league with that trade lmao

  2. Adam Larrson maybe? I remember people saying he would be the next Nik Lidstrom when he was drafted.

  3. Colin White was a product of the amazing players around him. He drove me crazy with bad penalties and bone headed plays… I love him because he was part of core Devils, but feel like people give him a pass too often.

  4. Brian Gionta was hyped by many Devils fans as a top winger in the league based off one season he never came close to replicating.

Another option could be Jamie Langenbrunner, he was never more than a second line winger and not a terribly inspiring leader in my opinion.

  5. I’m gonna throw 2 names out here:

Fetisov-he was a solid stay at home defenseman when he was with the Devils but no where near the hype he (and Starkov and Kasatoniv) was getting when he first came up.

I’m sure I’m gonna get killed on this one but Brendan Shanahan. I’m basing this on his 1st go around with the Devils before his career really took off. Of course he netted us Scotty so I can’t complain too
    much.

  6. Cory Schneider.

Edit: second choice: any first round pick between Zajac and Nico excluding Adam Larsson.

  7. Zajac. I always said the Devils will never win another cup until Zajac is gone. He stuck around for wayyyyy to long.

  8. Maybe Damon Severson, although I think eventually fans figured out who he was and stopped expecting him to be a top pairing defenseman.

  9. Taylor Hall. Was a fine individual player, surely, but was never on a successful team while he was here. Won an MVP award, but still his name doesn’t rate as a top player in our history.

  10. This is super tough. Do you go for a good/liked player whose time here was largely nothing or contributed nothing? Or do you go for someone who had a lot of hype and never lived up to it?

Like Subban was supposed to save us on D and just was kind of a fart. Don’t get me wrong I love PK, but his time here came and went.

I see people saying Holtz but I think that’s recency bias and I also don’t think that by the time he started playing last year anyone considered him a good prospect nationally anymore.

  11. Just going off some of the big names we brought in that didn’t pan out to much success as a team – Dave Andreychuk, Phil Housley, the returns of Brian Rolston and Shanahan although they were past their primes

  12. Scott Gomez.

He had a good rookie season but never really lived up to the hype after that.

At least his agent convinced the rags to overpay him.

  13. He contributed plenty of goals but almost all I can remember were rebounds and scrums in front of the net. And rarely with a game on the line.

  14. Mackenzie Blackwood. He got a bobble head. That’s criteria for what the franchise sees in you. Just didn’t deliver

  15. If it’s overrated by our own fan base, Merrill and a third is by far the most overrated pairing in Devils history. If it’s overrated by a general hockey fan base, it’s gotta be David Clarkson circa 2013. If it’s overrated by a Devils’ GM, it’s Ryane Clowe or Ondrej Palat.

  16. Recent: PK Subban and/or Nikita Gusev. The off-season hype was off the chart and neither truly delivered.

Slightly less recent: Michael Ryder and/or Michael Camalleri.

  17. Easy for me. This screams Clowe. Guy was 29, at the end of his usefulness as a power forward and had come off injury just to have his time in NJ stunted by injuries. Should never have been signed in the first place
