  1. Again, the article is very accurate and fair.

Newhook looked more engaged and consistent when he was the main puck carrier on his line, but also when he was playing with guys who took care of things in the D zone and let him carry the puck.

When he played C with Anderson and Slaf after Dach’s injury, Newhook looked completely invisible. Slaf was forced to do the heavy lifting in the D zone and essentially act as the C.

Newhook went through a whole lot of linemates last year. He had some flashes here and there but nothing convincing.

He settled down once he had Armia and Roy, two guys who are on the slower side, solid in the D zone and in puck retrieval but won’t do much puck carrying in breakouts/transition/zone entry. It continued with Gallagher replacing the injured Roy. Again, Gallagher is a slower guy who doesnt do much puck carrying.

Newhook also got some confidence boost from playing on PP1, and helped the unit as a whole when he worked his way into being a trailer option instead of Suzuki.

The return of Dach will change a lot of things for Newhook. Dach probably gets the PP1 spot back, pushing Newhook to PP2. Dach also either pushes Newhook to the 3rd line C job or to the wing. Newhook-Dach-Slafkovsky was good for the 2 games they got to play together. Laine might just replace Slafkovsky on a new version of that line.

The other possibility is to keep Armia-Newhook-Gallagher together as a 3rd line. It worked well and revitalised all three players. But that bottom C is crowded and will go through changes during the season as the fate of some UFAs is decided.

  2. At centre newhook is going to be a very good 3C. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a 2C but in the top 6 he’s very capable on the wing with a good C
