Loren Strickland kept hammering away and wouldn’t be denied: Explaining Strickland’s improbable rise to Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster

Loren Strickland (#48) Preseason PFF Stats:

  • 86 snaps
  • 75.0 defensive grade
  • 89.0 run defense
  • 3 defensive stops

A former University of Indianapolis captain, Strickland exceeded expectations by making the leap from Division II to the MAC and Ball State. Now, the 5-foot-9 hard-hitting defensive back has defied all odds by going from a $1,500 signing bonus undrafted rookie to making the Detroit Lions’ initial 53-man roster.

… By the end of (camp), he was mixing in with the first team at nickelback when Amik Robertson and Brian Branch were sidelined, and he didn’t look out of place.

  1. If he’s active and gets on the field, I’m guessing he’ll be in on obvious run plays. Smaller at 5’10ish so not sure how he is in pass coverage, but the dude can lay the boom!

  2. That’s really impressive considering how deep this team was going into the camp I have to imagine not a lot of spots were available

  3. Strickland, please be awesome for the team, the fans, the story, and yourself. Seeing someone make the most of a very low probability opportunity is awesome.

  4. That’s amazing to go from D2, to only starting 5 games with Ball State, to being on an NFL roster. Huge props to Strickland.

  5. Tbh I don’t recall seeing his name once in any any preason or camp articles. Was pretty confused when I saw his name on the final cuts, but here we are. Good for him

    Fucking GRIT.

  7. Good on him.

Hard to see this as our final 53 though. We’re carrying 11 DB’s and only 7 WR’s + TE’s. The latter is not enough.
