Armstrong on offer sheets: ‘I would’ve done it to my mother if she was managing the Oilers’

St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong explained why he decided to tender offer sheets to Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, and shared his thoughts on some of the reaction to the move.

  1. Only if you don’t know 💩 about hockey. They overpaid by several millions per season on each player…relatively unproven, unable to crack the Oilers roster full time, for multiple seasons. Broberg demanded a trade last season, that unwanted attitude’s unwanted & Holloway’s been snakebiten his entire career in Edmonton.
Best of luck boys, but your new team paid W A Y too much.
The league’s watching & it doesn’t look good…disregard the atypical Oiler haters & their usual drivel.

  2. I woulda liked to keep them both on the oilers but they overpaid for both. Holloway was a slight overpay he could easily be worth 2m this year. That Broberg contract tho is a massive yikes. You’re gambling 4.6m on a guy who’s never played 30 games in an nhl season. Hopefully they work out but this is a big overpay by the blues good luck tho.

  3. I’ve heard 3 other teams were ready to do the same thing. I’m a oilers fan. They should have had them signed. Lesson to others in the future. It might take a few years. The blues will get there’s

  4. This is a feeble attempt at damage control because he knows that this will come back to bite. More offer sheets coming his way, driving up the cost of young players.

  5. Love this perspective. It's objective and would be entertaining if more GM's took the same approach. It's in the rule book for a reason – if you can use the offer sheet mechanism to your advantage, go for it. I don't think Armstrong is fretting another GM doing the same to him in the future. Fair game.

  6. I hope they become injury prone and out for the contract length
Thanks for your service but you willingly signed to leave
Dont come back and i hope you keep your chin up especially broberg who is soft at best and a baby 😂

  7. An offer sheet…fair and fine.
Two, on the same team, at the same time?
Your fellow GMs, who you have to do business with every day, will let you know what they think of that.

  8. Watch out for next year, teams are going after your rfa . He may wait it out , he knows he will get offer sheeted now. Hope he nails you and your cap.
Bull shit on the offer sheet, we all know you did it to screw a team.

  9. What kind of soft serve ice cream is this? The guy is a Blues GM, he isn't supposed to consult a GM of another team before he does something perfectly legal to improve his teams chances of winning.

If this move hurts the Oilers in the process? Sports at the highest level is meant to be tough. If a GM can't handle his roster than he needs to be fired.

  10. I'm happy that Blues fans are happy, because it means in about 9 months from now, their unhappiness, will be all the more potent.

Enjoy your two boat anchors, STL. 🍻 Thanks for the picks.

  11. Oilers fans need to understand something about the cap hits from a Blues perspective. I get that Oilers can’t and won’t pay that salary for where they are. Cap space is extremely important for them, given that they are contending right now.

The Blues aren’t contending. The cap space they use on these two players would not have been used better on two veterans that might have been worth those contracts as of today. Because no matter what, the Blues will not be contenders for the next couple of years. So the cap space they take up is more or less irrelevant. They’re looking to build a team of young players that will be able to contend for real in 2-3 years time and open up a window of 5-7 years of being able to really fight for a cup. These moves help with that. Most forwards and centers on the team are less than 25 years old, 7-8 of them are 1st round picks. The adding of Broberg will probably (not necessarily) give them a top 4 defenseman for years to come. The interesting part for the Blues is not this year or next. It’s getting control of these guys, seeing what they have and re-up them in two years if they feel that they’re part of the future. If not, you move on (don’t qualify, trade etc). And for this you payed a 2nd and two 3rds. Worth it everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

  12. The Blues got themselves a Nurse contract, meaning big money for a guy to might not deserve it….spoiler alert, Nurse didn’t.
