  1. Good for Leon to get his bag. Idk how well it’s going to go for the Oilers. Hefty price for a long time and he’s 28. Most players are getting out of their prime time by that age and older. Time will tell

  2. This really hurts Leon’s chances of becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer

Good God that contract is massive

  3. I remember Oilers fans telling me he’d take a discount to stay hah.

“12.5, maybe less, they want to win”

  4. 14 million AAV… wild. He deserves it though and hopefully this will continue pushing the cap up

  5. With Bouchard up next, Oilers will be scavenging the bargain bin to fill out the roster for years to come.

  6. Was really starting to wonder if he was going to have a new home next summer. The dynamic duo remains.

  7. Actively choosing to stay in Canada (high taxes), in Edmonton (on a lot of NTCs), and with his buddy McDavid. I expected him to chase his bag elsewhere, so this is a pleasant surprise.

  8. 60+ mill for 7 guys is ridiculous

“it’s a bold strategy cotton, Let’s see if it pays off for them.”

  9. Does this shrink the window down to 2 years?

Unless McDavid takes a generous home town discount, he’ll likely earn more when his contract is up. 15 million a year maybe?
    29 million for 2 players.
Then you got the Nurse contract.
    Bouchard has earned his pay….

Gotta hope the salary cap rises significant in the next few years.

That being said… if I’m Leon, I’m gonna get what I’m worth. 14 million seems reasonable

  10. I’m calling it, he’s going to be injured, free up all that cap space and they will grab some defence etc. with that cap space and make a run.

Gotta stick to the current winning model!

  11. Taking a page out of Toronto’s playbook? Pay a few guys a ridiculous amount of money then surround them with below average players and hope a miracle happens?

Yikes that’s a big contract. If he’s 14 AAV what’s McDavid going to be when his contract comes due? 16? That’s A LOT of cap wrapped up in two guys.

  12. They’re the new Leafs 4 but worse

When bouchard gets around 10 next summer they’ll be a bit over 45M for 4 players

Then almost 40M on the books as it stands for most of the rest of the roster

That’s already over a full cap with only 19/23 players signed

    👀

  13. Was there a bump for his awesome flopping and acting skills in the last 60 seconds of a must win playoff game?

  14. Drai 14

    Mcdavid ~16

    Bouchard ~10

    Nurse 9.25

4 player Total of ~50mill (half the cap of estimated 100M)

    Who needs depth?

  15. Stan you do realize that the Oilers are one injury to him or McDavid from being a lottery team now, right?

    Oh right he probably doesn’t

  16. Oilers gonna need to suit up Draisaitl, McNuggets, and a bunch of arena workers for the foreseeable future

  17. Sports leagues are killing themselves off with all these escalating salaries. The Oilers just pushed off their chance to win the Cup because they are going to need to cut payroll somewhere. I used to have season tickets but it got out of the price point I was willing to spend and a number of people I know have done the same thing. I hardly even watch hockey anymore! Pretty much just the SC Finals.

  18. Not like he doesn’t deserve it, guys a monster on the ice. But what happened to the big guys in Edmonton taking team friendly deals?

Also, if Draisaitl is taking 14 mil a year I would be very scared what McDavid is gonna take

  19. I don’t understand how the Oilers can look to the Maple Leafs and say, “Hey, we can make the same mistake but we will be different.”

No offense to Draisaitl. He’s a great player. But you can’t win when you’re giving a small number of players so much money.

  20. I really feel like Draisaitl knew his team couldn’t him go and he milked the organization for everything he could.

In my opinion, signing a contract of this size given all the circumstances was a very selfish thing to do, and shows he cares far more about money than he does his team.

There’s not enough money left to give McDavid a similarly sized contract while keeping a decent team in tact and he knows it.

Imagine being a critical employee in a company and demanding the company pays you so much to keep you, that they are going to have to cut everyone else’s salaries in order to afford you. That’s basically what he did to his teammates.

  21. ‪You pay the greatest playoff performer of this generation what he wants. That’s it. No other fan base gets that.‬

  22. More than likely, at some point in the future Nurse gets bought out or agrees to move with no salary retained at the expense of multiple 1st round Edmonton picks.

One of the worst contracts in NHL history.
