Option Deadline & Expectations for Raptors’ Ochai Agbaji

  1. >What’s been clear is that Agbaji is a solid defender. He’s 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, and can hold his own on the wings. At times last year, he was Toronto’s primary defender against the opposing team’s best player and was tasked with starting 18 games down the stretch for the Raptors. But entering this year it’s not clear if Agbaji will even start the season in Toronto’s rotation.

    >The Raptors likely won’t decline Agbaji’s option considering the relatively small size of the contract and the potential upside if he can develop into an adequate three-point shooter next season. But while it’s an obvious decision for most prospect, Agbaji’s lackluster start to his career at least makes this situation a little bit more complicated.

Personally I think you do, but there is the thing if his 3pt% doesn’t return then he’s basically Jalen McDaniels level in terms of value.

  2. I kind of hate it that some people are talking about him as if he is the second coming of Jalen McDaniels. Realistically, he only had one bad season. McDaniels showed he can only shoot decent percentage on low volumes (2 and under attempts per game), Ochai shot almost 4 attempts per game in his rookie season.

He only needs to return to his rookie shooting numbers to be a viable rotation player and Raptors are critically short on perimeter defense. So let him roll, see if lack of roster stability is something that was a factor in his bad season.

  3. If Poku could last his entire 4 year deal, I see no reason to dump Ochai before his contract is up.

There’s a reason we were able to buy low, and we have the time and roster space to be patient.

  4. Agbaji was supposed to be a three point shooter, but he couldn’t really shoot threes and doesn’t bring much of anything else. He looked fine defensively, but in the modern NBA if you can’t provide value on offence you are really hurting the team overall.

I hope I’m wrong, but this is looking like a swing and a miss from the Raptors’ front office. With how many options there are at the wing, I am not sure if he will even get any opportunity to prove himself.
