Jake McCabe Extension Talks

Jake McCabe and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in early talks of an extension.

How do you feel about McCabe and would you like to see him back next season?

  1. I’d be happy with them re-signing McCabe, assuming it’s not an unreasonable extension. He’s not the best defender in the world at times but he always plays hard, has an underrated offensive game, and sticks up for his teammates which is needed on this team. I’m all for re-signing a top four d-man who can play both sides, again assuming it’s at a reasonable price.

  2. I appreciate his physicality and responsibility in our end but he also scored a couple of timely goals for us last season. Obviously not a huge contributor but had a career year offensively. Love Caber.

  3. Hes getting paid like 4m right now. Only 2m cap hit(that trade by dubas was actually sooooo good for the team…)

He will probs want 4 to 5m again… so idk. If we could get him for 3 to 3.5m that would be ideal…

  4. I just don’t understand the point of OEL if they have McCabe. Both play the left. Both play behind Reilly. Are we really going to pay this much for our second and third pairing left shot D?

  5. By all means I’d be happy to have him but the AAV better take into account the fact that his best years are definitely behind him given his age and style of play.

  6. He’s getting 5 minimum, anyone that thinks he’s taking less than his last contract after a career high in points and doubling his career goals while being a soldier for us all year is smoking some POTENT crystal meth.

  7. He is by far one of my favourite depth players. Hammers people on the boards like a Mack truck and plays a pretty responsible game. I’ll take him on a reasonable extension all day.

  8. Absolutely yes. A well known hot-head out there, good breakout ability, offensive upside. This is exactly the type of player we need, a lunatic who scares the shit out of the other team. I fucking love this man.

  9. Him and Benny were fun to watch. The best blue liner? Nope, but for a bottom pairing he’s solid.

  10. He was probably our best front of net Dman last year. For the right price, he makes our team better

  11. Very fine line this team has to walk. Obviously not known for having a Stanley cup defensive core as it is. McCabe turning 31 you just hope the long-term back end locked up above the age of 30 can contribute to their cap value. Would be crippling to end up with a long-term d man eating up a big cap hit that can’t be played.

The nature of the cap, these are the contracts most likely to kill you. It’s not Matthews at 13M, it’s a Jack Campbell at 5 and shitting the bed

  12. He’s a solid #4D, and the going rate for those is 4-5m per year. If his ask is on the lower end, I’d have zero issues paying him but if he’s asking for over 5m then the Leafs better walk.

  13. Good all around top 4 dman, kinda like a Muzzin-lite. Has some physicality, some size, some offence, and some defence, can play the PK, etc, even if he’s not “elite” in any of those areas.

Would love to keep him, but this age is when contracts get tricky.

  14. At his age and how he plays, he’s probably already being paid his value. I don’t love the idea of a total contract raise. The reason he’s so valuable is his performance to his current retained cap hit. If he ends up getting 5.5 I’m not sure I like him all that much anymore
