Anybody up on their puck knowledge?

I bought this puck – well a pair of them – in an auction in Scotland containing stuff that had belonged to an olympics buff. There was a load of game used items in the sale and as a hockey fan, I bought two of these. The story was that these were game used or produced for the final game and collected afterwards. Does that seem likely? Is it legit or a just a licensed item? I paid very little for it and bought them a few years back now.

  1. I suppose I’m trying to ask if it was a game used or just a licensed item sold at or after the event. Either way, it’s on display.

  2. Does the side of the puck have any text on it? The reason being is beginning with the 2014 Olympics, the game pucks did not have any text on the side. There were some replicas made with text on the side, I think. I have a few pucks that I can post photos of later to show what I mean if you’d like.

  3. The puck itself appears to be one of the designs used for the gold medal game. [ Getty seems reliable enough](https://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/news-photo/view-of-the-gold-medal-match-puck-during-the-mens-ice-news-photo/474386243?adppopup=true), and the B/W back matches the puck designs used in all games.

There is some wear on the one edge, which certainly looks like it has been used. Albeit not sure how you might know when the wear occurred.

There are images of a color different design that comes up if you include “collector” in the search, so that also suggests the Getty one is correct.

I think you may very well have a game day puck. Considering both teams likely used 20-30 or so in warm ups, it’s possible this was used on the ice during this, or even the game.

Beyond this, that’s as far as I can tell. Perhaps a wiser hockey Redditer will have some insight about how to go further with assessing it’s legitimacy. Like you, this would be enough for me to display it regardless. Nice find!

  4. I’ll always associate this Olympics with Putin using it as cover for the invasion of Crimea. 10 years later and it’s pretty insane how that has escalated.

  5. I don’t think these were game used, there would be all types of scratches and marks with even a minutes worth of play. These things get stepped on all the time the second a board battle occurs.
