Day 16: Best Role Player

Day 16 is here, one final spot to fill! The winner is the comment with the most upvotes, not the cumulative upvotes of all comments, so if you really like a guy then vote rather than comment again. 1. This is tough ngl, but I’m gonna have to go with Cornbread. He was way before my time, but I think his body of work for the Cs eclipses that of the great role players I grew up watching in House, Posey, Cassell etc. So it’s gotta be Maxwell.

  2. Recency bias, but I really feel like Dwhite is the ultimate role player. He seriously just compliments anyone he plays with perfectly

  3. The first player coming to mind is Derrick white – but there is something called the John Havlicek sixth man of the year award so probably him

  4. derrick white, dennis johnson, satch sanders or tony allen.. this one is too hard for me.. fuck it, gimme scalabrine

  5. Satch Sanders maybe or D White for current player
But I have to go with Hondo
He’s HOF and sixth man is a major role to play

  6. The first half of Havlicheck’s career he basically invented the 6th man role and played an incredibly important glue piece to the second half of the Russell dynasty. He was probably a HOFer based on being a role player before he eventually became the star player. Plus I feel we need to have him on this list somewhere

  7. The thing about the Celtics is that there are too many correct choices for this category

  8. So tough to just pick one. I’m 30 so obv didn’t watch in the Russell and Bird era but I’ll still do them.
    60s: Satch Saunders
    70s: Don Nelson
80s: DJ (I think it’s him over Walton for the extra title)
    90s: Dino???
2000s: James Posey (even though he only played one year, he was that valuable man)
    2010s: Avery Bradley
    2020s: Derrick White

  9. Might be recency bias but it’s Derrick White all day. He just does everything for us. So effectively and so elite in his role, so reliable on both ends throughout the game and especially in the clutch.

  10. John Havlicek in the 60’s.

Obviously in the 70’s he was the star, but 60’s is prime role player.

  11. I’m voting Cornbread. Knew his role and did it exceptionally well, winning a finals MVP at that.

  12. Currently it’s DWhite
or maybe Jrue depending on your definition. Recently it was Marcus Smart. Before him, it was Eddie House or any number of guys on that 2008 team.

It was Bill Walton (if longevity doesn’t count, this is the answer) and Jerry Sichting for a minute. And there’s more than a half dozen candidates from the 60s and 70s. All that said, the answer is Danny Ainge.
