Full Week 1 PFF Grades: Offense/Defense & O-Line Pressures (2024)

  1. Not sure how 3 out of our top 4 players on offense were lineman after watching yesterday. Buts refreshing to not see them at the bottom.

  2. A few noteworthy things to me:

Julian Hill TE1! I always joke about this on the discord server but for at least week 1, it seems he was the TE1 going by snap count. He played 42 snaps, Smythe had 30, and Jonnu had just 20. He also had an elite run blocking grade of 88.4, which was the highest of the team!

With that being said, the O-Line graded out much much higher in both run blocking and pass blocking than I expected. Honestly it’s hard to agree overall with their OL grades for this week, but I guess it’s better than them grading out horribly? Grier’s “You’re a lot more worried about the OL than we are” line gets proven right for one week, if PFF is anything to go by.

Nice to see Tua get a positive run grade. He showed the improved speed and agility this game for sure.

Interesting that Mostert and Achane both had average to above average run grades, the OL had great run blocking grades, but we struggled heavily against the run. Something’s not really adding up there.

Calais Campbell’s showing age is just a number grading out as our second highest player on defense.

Storm Duck surprisingly was made active over Bonner and had a nice few snaps. Great story out of camp.

  3. MiaCannons my **GOAT** for doing this year in and year out.

    * Armstead proving why he’s a franchise LT when healthy… man it’s gonna suck this is likely his last year with us. None of Tua’s pressure came from the left side yesterday. All from the right side.
    * AJ despite getting BULLDOZED by Travon Walker on the Tua stumbling backwards sack that knocked us out of FG range still scores above an 80. Nice!
    * I am shocked by that Eichenburg rating. He got beasted on by Arik Armstead one time. But then again, the O-line did well in the 2nd half allowing Tua enough time for those HUGE plays to Waddle/Tyreek to develop and you only have that much time if the O-line is doing their job.
    * Tua scored a 77.8 feels about right. Had some overthrows in the 1st half he normally hits.
    * Smythe and Jonnu were atrocious. TE unit as a whole completely dropped the ball (***MULTIPLE*** times)
    * On D, not standout grades. Phillips/Jevon being Top 5 tracks with how the game felt. 3 of the 4 lowest ratings going to DBs makes me a bit queasy. Ramsey with his hamstring. Poyer trying to beat the washed allegations. Kohou trying to bounce back from a poor 2023 campaign. Something to monitor.
    * Jags RT rightfully gets crushed on the grades cuz Phillips beasted on him. Kirk had bad drops for them on 3rd down spots too. Impressed by their linebacker scores as they did a good job disrupting our O in the 1st half.

  4. Kohou is going to be an issue again this year I fear. Might even see Duck steal his place if he’s going to struggle as much as last year.

  5. I didn’t see it watching the game, but Eich scoring an 80 is *huge*. He’s on the Austin Jackson third year leap path 🙏🙏
