Hey Sportsfans — it's time for Week 24 of
r/baseball Power Rankings: September rolls on and we're getting closer to the end. Who will end has the #1 team in baseball?
Every voter has their own style / system and the only voting instructions are these:
"To an extent determined individually, you must take into account how strong a team is right now and likely to be going forward. You must, to some degree, give weight to the events and games of the previous week."
One Guest Voter this week representing the Cleveland Guardians Guardians. Our old friend and retired, Hall of Fame voter u/thedeejus returned for a cameo apperance.

# | Team | Δ | Comment | Record | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles Dodgers | Dodgers | 0 | The injury bug continues to haunt the team with Gavin Stone hitting the IL and Teo getting a big owie on his foot. Despite that, the rest of the team is still picking up the slack. The biggest question is who will be in the postseason rotation. Shohei is also inching closer to 50/50 so keep an eye on that (I love him) | 86-57 |
| Philadelphia Phillies | Phillies | 0 | The Phillies looked unstoppable after a 16-2 win against the Marlins to push their win streak to 6 games. Unfortunately, they got blown out in the next two games and ended up splitting a 4 game set. Still, they went 4-2 on the week and haven't lost a series in 2+ weeks. The Phillies biggest weakness is their 5th starter, which thankfully won't be very relevant come playoff time but has been excruciating to watch the team try to fill the spot. They've maintained a 7 game lead in the division with the Mets taking over second place, which is important because the two teams play each other 7 times in the next two weeks. As long as the Phillies don't completely collapse in those series, the division should be comfortably theirs, but there is still a clear path to lose it. This week is a homestand with 3 against the Rays and 3 against the Mets. | 85-58 |
| New York Yankees | Yankees | 0 | Gil and Schmidt were nails off the IL, which is a huge relief. Barring other major injuries (✊🏼🪵) this is a great playoff rotation, a much-needed balance to our shaky bullpen. This may be the final stretch of Juan Soto as a Yankee, as optimistic as I am about free agency. I’m determined to enjoy it, he’s having an incredible season in the biggest spotlight in the sport. I really want Baltimore to wet the bed in September, but if they don’t, they’ve been worthy rivals for the division win. | 82-61 |
| Milwaukee Brewers | Brewers | 0 | The Brewers struggled this week against teams they needed to beat to stay competitive in the race for a bye in the first round of the playoffs. It is still possible, especially with a series against the Phillies coming up, but a wild card round appearance against one of the surging Padres, Diamondbacks, or Mets seems likely. I'm not saying they're going to lose in the first round yet again, but the narrative is there. | 82-61 |
| Baltimore Orioles | Orioles | 0 | Just a really subpar week for the Orioles. Their record is an overstatement of what this team really is, one that hits home runs and scores a ton, or does nothing and scores no runs. Three plus weeks left in the regular season and I honestly do not see this team doing anything in the playoffs. Oh well, nothing I can do about it. At least it isn't 100 degrees out anymore. | 82-62 |
| Cleveland Guardians | Guardians | +3 | O ye Guards! My rotation is ruined! But…what if I were to purchase injured starting pitchers such as Matt Boyd and Alex Cobb and and disguise it as a legitimate playoff rotation? Delightfully devilish, Cleveland! | 81-62 |
| San Diego Padres | Padres | +1 | Hit some bumps this week. It’s been said to death by this point, but Suarez was running into some trouble in his outings leading to the thursday-night blowup, but he’s definitely in need of some rest. The starting staff is having some troubles, with Cease trending down, and I’m a lil bit reactionary as I’m writing this after Musgrove gave up some bombs on Sunday. But hey man, I’m looking forward to seeing Manny pass Nate ‘The OG’ Colbert on the 163. | 81-64 |
| Houston Astros | Astros | -1 | King Tuck is back! Verlander might be old, though. It seems crazy to think that he might not be on the postseason roster, but that's a possibility. | 77-66 |
| Arizona Diamondbacks | D-Backs | -3 | A couple of weeks ago, the Diamondbacks were threatening to overtake the Dodgers for the lead in the NL West; today, Snakes fans are praying they still make it to the playoffs. The starting pitching, finally healthy, has been almost universally lackluster, while the bullpen seems to be tiring from heavy use. The absence of gold glover Gabi Moreno behind the dish is likely a factor, but the pitching needs to get back on course if the D-backs are going to make it to October, let alone have postseason success. | 80-64 |
| New York Mets | Mets | +4 | When I was growing up, Yankees fans used to make fun of me, saying that Mets stood for "My Entire Team Sucks". Now, it's more like "Most Excellent Team, Sir!" or "My Entire Team Succeeds". The Mets are good. I don't know what's gonna happen the rest of the year. I've written 24 of these blurbs now and it's hard to come up with new shit to write about. | 78-65 |
| Kansas City Royals | Royals | 0 | Barring a collapse, the rest of the schedule may be about seeding for the playoffs and staying healthy. The Royals may even be able to use the final games to line up their rotation as desired for the Wild Card round. It is truly amazing how much of a difference a season can make. | 79-65 |
| Atlanta Braves | Braves | -2 | The Braves were almost 2 games back in the wild card race yesterday. The Mets had the lead into the 7th inning and the Braves were down a run entering the 9th. I turned both games off and started writing a "woe is me the season may be over" blog. Instead, the Mets blew their lead and the Braves had a comeback reminiscent of what we did in 2021. September Pennant Race baseball is wild. | 78-65 |
| Minnesota Twins | Twins | -1 | Two weeks ago it looked like we were going to make our push for the AL Central lead, and now it looks like we're going to try to hobble into the third Wild Card slot. Injuries are biting us at the absolute worst moment. | 76-67 |
| Chicago Cubs | Cubs | -1 | 73-70 | |
| Seattle Mariners | Mariners | +1 | The M's have actually been scoring lot of runs lately, and have a pretty large run differential over the last few weeks. Almost all of their losses in that time have been 1-run games (with a 2 run loss thrown in there this week.) So there are some signs of life – the question is whether it's too late. Up next: 2 vs. Vedder Cup contenders, 4 vs. The Entire State of Texas | 73-71 |
| Detroit Tigers | Tigers | -1 | The two-man-rotation-turned-three-man-rotation has the Tigers 3.5 games out of a playoff spot. Furthermore, Jake Rogers is the only lineup regular with over 2.25 years of MLB service time. With anywhere between 4-6 rookies in the lineup on any given night, these guys have no business playing meaningful games this late, yet here we are. This week: 3 vs. COL, 3 vs. BAL. | 73-71 |
| Boston Red Sox | Red Sox | 0 | Welp, we ended the season series against the worst team in modern MLB history 4-3. If that isn't a sign that we just don't have it, I don't know what is. 6-13 and we'll match our record from 2022 and 2023, which given how we've been playing lately feels kind of like fate. Just get me through these last few weeks so I can pretend to be excited about free agents for a couple of months… | 72-71 |
| St. Louis Cardinals | Cardinals | 0 | Just when you think the Cardinals are figuring something out (beating the Brewers) they go and do something like this (lose to the Mariners 10-4) and totally un-redeem themselves. | 72-71 |
| Texas Rangers | Rangers | +3 | Most likely too little too late for a serious push to happen but it's been fun to watch lately. The only consitent thing this year is all of the injuries now with Gray, Mahle, and Seager being done for the year. The team is trying at least and ending with a .500 record, while disapointing, still isn't something to scoff at. | 70-74 |
| Tampa Bay Rays | Rays | 0 | This blurb is to highlight the certified Rays Reclimation Reliever of the yeaR Edwin Uceta. Uceta, if you didn't know, was put on waivers or released from 5 teams last year before signing with the Rays in the offseason. He has since become the Rays' top reliever in what has become a top bullpen, even earning his own Fangraphs article. I'm not sure if there's an efficiency stat for IP per words written, but surely he's near the top. With the departure of Adam and injuries to Fairbanks, dude is pitching 5 out saves and making it look easy. A bit of sunshine in a cloudy season. | 71-72 |
| San Francisco Giants | Giants | -2 | The Giants won a series vs the Padres and that's pretty cool. The quest to finish at .500 or better continues, and so does the instability of the rotation. Mostly I'd like to just focus on how awesome Matt Chapman is. The Chapster. Chappinator. Chappy Chap Chap. The Giants have locked in Chapitude to a longer contract and he's quickly becoming my favorite Giant, my first one since Buster Posey retired. I know what you're thinking — Yaz and Webb. Well, Yaz is on his own tier and I think of Webb as the Captain of Pitchers. But to be my 'favorite Giant', you need a little something extra. The Bay Area connection through the A's helps a lot — like with Barry Zito — since I basically rooted for both for their whole career. He also has that quiet professionalism with the clear silly side that reminds me of Posey. He's also basically Kirby at third base, sucking up anything that gets near him. I don't know. I haven't fully decided, but I'm really glad to watch Matt Chapman play out the remainder of his career in the Bay. | 71-73 |
| Cincinnati Reds | Reds | +1 | Sure the Reds haven’t been doing great this year but at least we can all look forward to watching our glorious Bengals play. Look at week 1 they’re playing the Patriots. This will be a cakewalk. | 69-75 |
| Toronto Blue Jays | Blue Jays | -2 | Spencer Horwitz has been a delight these last few months. Wtih the Jays obviously long out of the playoff race, so much of this final stretch of the season has been trying to figure out which of the young guys and new trade additions can fill the holes we'll have and not have to resort to FA pickups in the offseason. He'll have to continue to develop his defense, but he's mashed in a way that shows he can be a lock for an infield spot, even one that's leading a platoon or other rotation. Beyond him, there are a few other potential Dudes Who Can Ball, but the priority will still be going for a couple big impact bat FAs and damn-near a whole new bullpen. | 68-76 |
| Pittsburgh Pirates | Pirates | 0 | The Pirates actually had a winning week, but in the middle of it were no-hit by the hated Cubs. Jared Jones is back and thriving and Paul Skenes is still going strong, but the offense remains a mess. Henry Davis hit the IL Sunday with a potentially season-ending injury; in what should have been his first full year in the majors, the former first overall pick hit .144/.242/.212 in 37 games. Only Billy Cook can save us now. | 67-76 |
| Washington Nationals | Nationals | 0 | Dylan Crews is a stud, James Wood is a stud, split a series with Pittsburgh. | 64-79 |
| Oakland Athletics | Athletics | 0 | Went to my final game at the Coliseum, was a wild walkoff in the 13th after every attempt to lose the game. Other than than we had I believe the statistical worst believer outing in franchise history and our September call-ups aren't any better so who knows. | 62-82 |
| Los Angeles Angels | Angels | 0 | 59-84 | |
| Miami Marlins | Marlins | 0 | 54-89 | |
| Colorado Rockies | Rockies | 0 | I went to a gme at Petco on Monday, and have to say that I had an absolute blast. It's so much more fun to be at a game where the outcome matters to the home crowd, something we haven't experienced at Coors Field in the better part of a decade. The older ladies behind us couldn't stop raving about various players, especially after I told them I was a Rockies fan visiting from Denver. They wanted to tell me all about the Padres. Shout out to them. I went to a concert at Coors Field this weekend that was also better than anything baseball-related that's happened there recently. And it will be a miserable place this weekend when Cubs fans descend on it like it's the last Portillo's on earth. | 54-90 |
| Chicago White Sox | White Sox | 0 | THAT'S RIGHT BITCHES. TWO WINS THIS WEEK. NO CHANCE OF LOSING 20 GAMES (AGAIN) THIS SEASON. THAT .127 WIN PERCENTAGE IN THE SECOND HALF IS LOOKING MIGHTY SWEET. | 33-111 |
