An interesting tidbit from the Joe Mazzulla interview on the Locked On Celtics podcast was that he thought the Pacers series “Was by far the toughest series”.

Everyone is familiar with the quote about the Celtics having a target between their eyes versus on their back but there were quite a few other insights in the talk between John Karalis and Joe Mazzulla.

During the second part of the interview of the interview(question starts at 22:16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8hAEIHzBRE), Mazzulla was talking about the idea of control and how NBA teams do not control as much as fans think they do and he mentions that the Indiana series was the hardest and how things could've been different at various turning points(Nesmith hitting his 3 at the end of game 3, Carlisle calling a timeout, etc.).

Just found it interesting as it is one thing to say it and think it as a fan versus having the head coach say it.

  1. Anyone that watched the entire Celtics playoff run would agree. Indy played us with reckless abandon(in a good way). They came in and fought.

And that’s the thing with Mazzulla. He gives these outlandish and crazy quotes that the media and casuals eat the fuck up, but if you listen to the non-sound bites he gives very open and raw answers. Yeah, he talks in a few odd quotes or platitudes, but he also dives deep into game plans and his thought process. The funny quotes are just easier for people to latch on to.
